Sharma shambles …
Newshub reveals the Ombudsman – who oversees compliance of the Act – has issued a “please explain” to the Prime Minister.

In a statement, Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier said: “I am aware of the allegations made by Dr Sharma about the workshop advice and training given to Labour MPs on the Official Information Act.

But the related Newshub headline – “Ombudsman writes to Jacinda Ardern after Gaurav Sharma’s claims, secretly taped MP says minister dismissed issue of wellbeing” – is wrong and should read “tranparency“.

“Wellbeing” in this case surely falls under the provisions of The Protected Disclosures (Protection of Whistleblowers) Act 2022?

And if so, is the media use of the term “rogue” MP perhaps derogatory, and the term “whistle-blower” more appropriate, as well as a few rights that the Protected Disclosures Act should afford?

  I hope Kiwibloggers don’t mind me jumping up in the comments but I have a suggestion.
  
  National and Act should gift questions and supplementaries each day to Dr Sharma. He would no doubt have some great questions for the PM and we should not have to wait for a blue moon for the allocation of one question for a lone MP to come around.

  I made submissions on the original PDA and the amended Act. Alas the original and amended dont protect Whistleblowers which is why we have so few. In fact there was never a case taken under the original Act in over 20 years.
  The international Business Ethics Institute has done a number of studies with Vic Uni. The results have not been good. Over 50% say if they saw bad behaviour they wouldnt report it for fear of the consequences ( Dr Sharma). Over 20% had witnessed bad behaviour in their workplace in the past 12 months. This is all bad behaviour theft bribery bullying sexual harrasment etc.
  The fact is as the Sharma case shows NZ is a very immature society when it comes to ethics.

Porirua CC has changed the name of Calliope Park; it was named after the ship that held Te Rauparaha captive.

This is the same Te Rauparaha who committed genocide of the Moriori on the Chatham Is.

Personally, I find the naming of the Porirua Arena & Pool after that old mass murderer to be much more offensive.

      You seem to think there can only be one view of historical figures.
      eg: Te Rauparaha – honoured ancestor who led his people from defeat in Taranaki to the conquest of Te Whanganui o Tara, or bloodthirsty cannibal, genocidaire and cannibal?
      Winston Churchill – revered symbol of British resistance to fascism, or war criminal and architect to deliberate famine?

        milkey – one of the rare times we might agree on something. This is entirely my point, generally “history is written by the victors”. Churchill was in general a very poor military man as is well documented, the bombing of Dresden and Gallipoli the standouts. But that wasn’t why they raised a statue of him or he is revered in some circles. It was because of his leadership in a very dark period for Britain. So be it.
        
        What grinds my gears is the constant attempt to rewrite history and in particular, to try and destroy any reference to it. It’s 1984 stuff.
        Leave the statues up. Educate people about the actual backstory. All aspects of it. Let people make their own mind up about the merits of the person and their contributions to where we are today.
        
        The current drive to push everything Maori is going to backfire, just like the coercive and manipulative covid campaign. Keep educating, honestly and openly. Show all sides of the narrative. There never was and never can be a “single source of truth.”
        
        Mandela, Mother Theresa, Gandhi, there are many examples of venerated historical figures who had a dark side to them.

        The problem mikenmildagain is the very blatant moral double-standard.
        
        Anybody of European descent are judged against modern morality, and the slightest transgression seems to demand their name be expunged from history. But other ethnic groups, their history and actions are never questioned or even examined. They are simply deemed to be faultless, or at worst “a product of their time” and the acts not subject to judgement.
        
        Now as it happens I’m firmly in favour of the later approach. None of us are faultless, and almost every historical figure has some skeletons in their closest. Plus of course whether somebody is a hero or a villian frequently depends on which side of a conflict you agree with. So in general I support taking a forgiving view of historical figures (within limits of course – I wouldn’t support having a Hitler St or Pol Pot Ln).
        
        But the issue is consistency – pick a moral standard and apply it evenly. Right now that is absolutely not the case, as in this example here.

        Hi Milky. In a situation like this I think of the first sentence by Mark Twain in his best (in my opinion) book The Personal Recollections of Jean of Arc.
        Twain wrote “in order to make a fair estimate of the character of a man of renown we must judge him by the standards of his day, not ours”
        Based on this criterion by European standards of the time Te Rapauraha was a vicious evil cannibal. I would also say by the standards of a lot of Maori of his day as well.

        By British bombing standards of WW2, Dresden was a legitimate target; it was the principal point of debouchment for German troops on the Eastern Front, the last intact north-south rail line in Germany passed through it, and produced optical and electronic equipment for the military.My criticism of Churchill is that he found it politically convenient to throw Bomber Harris under the bus for the raid after supporting the same tactics against other cities for years.
        
        On Gallipoli, here is Britannica.com:
        
        The plan failed to produce decisive results because of poor military leadership in some cases, faulty tactics including complete lack of surprise, the inexperience of the troops, inadequate equipment, and an acute shortage of shells.
        
        To what extent is WC responsible, to what extent the military? I don’t know.
        
        I would rate his decision to aid Greece in 1941 as a worse decision as it condemned Britain to a two-year struggle to secure the Mediterranean and North Africa when residual Italian forces in North Africa could probably have been quickly defeated.
        
        On the other hand, North Africa was a distraction for Germany from the Russian front when Barbarossa needed every resource possible, including an aggressive general such as Rommel. Also, both the British and American armies learned to fight there.

        Did Churchill order the bombing of Dresden shortly before the end of World War 2? This account suggests not:
        
        Dresden was on the list of 58 cities which Air Marshal “Bomber” Harris was grinding his way through. Far more important, bombing Dresden was requested by the Soviet high command.
        
        A Soviet intelligence report (later proven erroneous) indicated that one or two German armoured divisions were in Dresden on their way to reinforce the Eastern Front. Accordingly the Russians—who would later denounce the attack as an Anglo-American war crime—made the request that led to Dresden’s destruction.
        
        Ironically, Churchill had left London for the Yalta Conference when the Soviet request came in. He wasn’t even there to give the order. The task fell to Deputy Prime Minister Clement Attlee. Churchill did not learn of the Russian request until he arrived in Yalta on February 4th.

And even better, Shane Te Pou, with regard to the statue of Colonel Marmaduke Nixon which stands in Otahuhu, he “challenged the mayor to open up a conversation about removing the memorial saying there should not be a memorial to a man who was a thug”. Nixon led an attack on a Maori village that saw 12 dead. As other Maori name a facility after a mass murderer. Their mass murderer is a hero, colonial guy not so much. Do you honestly think that anyone here would give a shit if a pool was named after Te Rauparaha IF the Maori with the loudest voices and their apologists hadn’t spat the dummy over Europeans that are important to the formation of this country? What do you expect when those same Maori literally ignore their own history of abject brutality?   An acquaintance’s great (possibly great, great) grandmother (Ngai Tahu) was captured by Te Rauparaha during one of his South Island forays and held prisoner/slave on Kapiti Island for several years. There’s also the case of the Akaroa chief tortured by Te Rauparaha’s wives on the journey back to Kapiti after the chief killed his daughter to prevent her falling into Te R’s hands…..no one in Ngati Toa seem willing to acknowledge this ‘offensive’ behaviour. Also, Kupe is a fictional character created by NZ School Journal writers in the early 1900s to ennoble Maori exploration. (Taranaki tribes – Ngati Tama and Ngati Mutunga, colonised Rekohu and enslaved the locals, using European ships so it’s the Govt’s fault)

        While it is true that there is more solid historical evidence for the life of Mohammed than there is for Jesus, their respective cults have ensured that for all practical purposes they can be regarded as mythological.         Now least we get too excited. If Jesus was nobody or nothing, why would Josephus write about him to his Roman patron within 50-odd years of Jesus’ crucifixion. And if it’s a Christian fraud text, why would they write about him as Josephus? Or why write about Jesus at all if the whole Christian thing was a big fraud…it makes no sense.
        
        And then there’s the WHOLE Roman empire converting to the Jesus-sect within 300 years.

        No contemporary evidence means no reliable evidence of the putative miracles, etc, let alone the resurrection nonsense.
        It’s an open question whether there was an historical Jesus. Ultimately, it’s a question of faith and myth. Lots of people would like to believe there was a real King Arthur or a Robin Hood, too. And for very many people, belief is close enough for them to claim it as a reality.

  Great, I have a few ideas – I’m gifting the name New Zealand Transport Agency to replace some sort of canoe; I’m gifting the name Auckland back to some place related to (as best I can make out) Brian and Hannah Tamaki; I’m gifting the flavour of chocolate called Creamy Milk to Whittakers, and I’m re-gifting the name New Zealand to all New Zealanders so they know where they come from.

    All you need to do is acquire sufficient mana for your gift to be desired and accepted. See, for example, ‘Royal’ names conferred on institutions. It might be that Voices for Freedom/[insert cult of choice] becomes Loddenthinks Voices for Freedom and so improves its prestige and credibility.

So the Chief Ombudsman has asked the Prime Minister for her assurance the OI Act is being followed correctly. She through her office has said Yip yip that’s what it is. And 9 years of neglect with numbers to prove it. Real numbers, not like those kids living in cars numbers?

Anyhoo , folk now wanting answers from the government / the Parliament have an excellent opportunity to ask for them and escalate to the Ombudsman knowing that the current government will be completely honest and transparent. At least until the heat retreats.

I know a bit about the OI Acts and it is believable what Dr Sharma said about his experience with the OIA. He could now lodge OIA requests to formally confirm / reject his allegations where they are covered by the Act. Including meetings and conversations not written down or otherwise documented – denial is a slippery slope in these days of a recording device in every pocket.

      As Benedict notes, political parties, as private organisations are not subject to the OIA. BTW, MPs, the parliamentary service and officers of parliament (the ombudsman, privacy commissioner, etc) have always been outside the coverage of the OIA. It is highly unlikely that any large group of MPs (a political party, say) would ever vote to change that.

  But I recall not long after Labour first became the govt (with NZF) that there was some reporting on how Labour MP’s were using social media apps to avoid the OIA process.
  
  Pretty sure it was mentioned in the MSM at the time (perhaps in a column piece rather than a news report)? Might have been Facetime should someone be willing do some intrepid research!

While interesting it would be even more interesting to know exactly the thinking and reasoning. In any case probably not too many complaints in the overall scheme of things, but that if such complaints were to increase a lot we might see some precedents one way or the other.

  It is all because behind the scenes it is real tin hat conspiracy theory stuff, and with it the elites do not want compotent people being elected who will unpick & throw out what what they have been doing.
  
  For example in the past week, there have been two major transport announcements that have slipped quietly into the public arena. They are Green Party policies to the core announced by Michael Wood and Auckland Transport. These policies need people like Collins to win the Auckland Mayoralty else these policies will be thrown out by Mayor’s or councils that are prepared to shine a light on the stupidity of such policies.
  
  In the case of the transport policies, there are dots that can easily be joined and they all trace back to a group of well placed Green ideologues who are influencing public policy without any democratic mandate. You only to look at the advisors to Phil Goff and the policies implanted over the past 3 years. If anyone other than Collins is elected in Auckland, the risk is all this influence will be undone.

  Simply because I don’t like being treated like an idiotic simpleton by our media who has to be guided on who to vote for or who not to vote for. If the media can report on the facts in an unbiased, neutral manner then I might start paying attention.       I wrote the above on my cellphone, so didn’t have the capacity to write out in full my thoughts on the matter, and right now I don’t have the time. But as I said above, the way the media is treating us currently gets my back up, and if they are determined to try and smear certain candidates then that is making me just as determined to give these candidates a fair chance. So if I see someone who is affiliated with the VFF, then I am now determined that I will take the time to check them out and see if they are worth my vote.

  The first is what happens when there is no $$ skin in the game and young people are at a loose end with no job (for some reason). The second because nobody wants to do the course (for some reason).
  
  Time to move free fees to at least after a successful first year.
  
  Be good to know data around the NEET component, especially where WINZ has sent them.
  
  Have mentioned here before,a young family member did a poly trades foundation course. More than 20 started, 4 finished and went on apprenticeships. No evidence but word on the ground was most were sent by WINZ. Some fell out in week 1. For some reason, but not surprising if some were due to lack of functional literacy, numeracy or both.

We are living through the worst energy crisis in 50 years. In many countries in Europe, the debate is not whether the price of gas will rise more or less (which, of course, it will) but to what extent there will be enough fuel to heat homes in the harsh winter. Historically, Europe has been highly dependent on Russian gas imports. However, Russia is now prepared to reduce supply drastically. This could put the entire European Union on the ropes. This would not only affect industries and pocketbooks but the welfare of millions of Europeans, who could spend a winter without heating in their homes.   Russian gas is a relatively new phenomenon. Brits used to burn coal & wood to keep warm. And, as you say, had thick woollen clothes.
  
  The larger problem is that homes built since the 1950s, especially in the cities, don’t have fireplaces.

    No, maggy is not arguing for racial quotas. She is just pointing out that the quotas are very selective. Though she hasn’t written it, I believe from her other writings here that she believes there should be no quotas. It is up to you to show that she isn’t advocating this.
    For the leadership positions, how about the best person for the job, based on transparent non-racial criteria? Or is that too reactionary for you?

      Statistically it is bloody odd that no Asian NZer appears to be represented in the 51 Lead Positions in our new Health Authority.
      
      As Asians currently make up about 16-18% of the NZ population, you would reasonably expect to have had
      8-9 Asian faces in the top Hierarchy.
      
      And considering how many Asian folk hold senior positions in our Medical and allied Health workforce, it is damn surprising that they are not at the top table of Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand.
      
      But read on…
      and all becomes clear..
      
      East Auckland doctor Carlos Lam said he felt Te Whatu Ora failed to canvass Asian communities for leadership candidates.
      
      It (Te Whatu Ora) needed to be more transparent with recruitment for its leadership positions, she said.

I see another contract concern being highlighted with Ka Awatea. The PM and her advisors are going to be very busy now managing the wide range of developing scandals and stuff ups. It usually takes about three years for a poor managers failures to start showing up. You can only paper over things for so long. Looks like we are there now with her. She is going to have a hard job keeping this motley crew together for the next 13 months.

Had to larf to myself when I read this unfortunate story in the Horrid.
Memories came flooding back…..

As a young & innocent 18 year old, my then boyfriend took me for a weeks holiday to Fiji.
On our first outing into Nandi, I spotted a fab Diamond-Tennis-Bracelet in the window of a well known Jewelers. After a lot of negotiation with the Indian owners, he managed to get it for nearly $2000 below the ticket price of $4500…. I was over the moon!

To cut a long story short, a few months later I was playing doubles here at the Club and the clasp broke. On the way home I took it into the jewelers in Remuera to have it repaired. It was only then that I found out, not only were the diamonds ‘Cubic Zirconia’, but it was also just gold-plated. The lady behind the counter reckoned it was worth 3 or 4 hundy at the most! Never wore it again.
Anyway, some time back I managed to sell it on Trade Me. Luckily I’d kept a photo of the original receipt.

Open letter to the Prime Minister:

During Dr Sharma’s medical training he would have received considerable tuition in ethical behaviour. The application of ethics in his chosen profession is an essential and fundamental requirement. Ethics require honesty, the recognition of human dignity, personal integrity and accountability. Ethics is the study of what is right or wrong in human conduct and moral principles. Dr Sharma’s medical career has no reference of him ever deviating from these values.

Unfortunately, for him, he has discovered ethical behaviour is a foreign concept within the confines of the Labour caucus. As a man of principal he has felt obliged to address what, in his view, is the appalling lack of adherence to the fundamental values of ethical behaviour. And you, as leader of the Labour caucus, will have to accept full responsibility. But this is unlikely considering your track record of dishonesty, political manipulation and egocentric behaviour insisting you are never wrong when all the evidence proves otherwise.

Your political career is rapidly disintegrating as more and more people are becoming aware that your influence on New Zealand’s well being has plunged the country into a divided, debt-ridden hell hole of the South Pacific. Dr Sharma is a breath of fresh air emerging from the densely polluted Labour caucus. It will be quite appropriate that Dr Sharma should be expelled from the Labour Party. There is no place for a person who elevates personal ethics above political ambition within Labour. The evidence confronts you every time you look in the mirror.

You claim Dr Sharma breached trust by going public with his concerns. Please explain why he has to protect unethical behaviour? It is little wonder you refused an independent enquiry. To instigate an independent enquiry would have been the ethical thing to do. It would have flushed out the truth but you can’t handle the truth therefore the rot will continue. Dr Sharma has exposed the coward that you are. There is no greater example of unethical behaviour than claiming “nothing to see here”.

I bet its only a smallish number of people doing the bulk of the burglaries.

What is happening in Nelson is shaping up as a regional disaster. If this happened in Taiwan or I think many countries, massive resources would be deployed to help.

Here it is like the government is not much interested. On Thursday they donated $200,000 🤡. Jacinda nowhere to be seen. It just seems to me she carefully picks and chooses her kindness targets.

    Floods, big and small, not uncommon over many years.
    And when there were unusually high tides which caused giant waves to crash over onto Rocks Rd (which runs round the harbour), we kids used to get on our bikes and go down to watch.

  The real problem is not , as the authorities are claiming , climate change. The problem is mankind comes along and builds houses , towns and cities next to rivers or on flood plains.
  Stop banks and bridges built on the cheap and when Mother Nature says , ‘sorry mate you can’t constrain me with your cheap fixes’ , the authorities then blame ratepayers not wanting to spend or better yet “climate change”.
  Same with housing sitting perched on steep hillsides without proper /adequate support etc

  As much as I think Arden is the worst PM in living memory, on this occasion I suspect they’ll just be waiting until the flooding recedes so they can assess the scale of the damage and the level of support required. As I understand it, the $200k fund is to be used for small things like those that have lost clothes / belongings etc and is very much a stopgap. Obviously won’t be enough and does seem small but suspect this is the start and not the end. Further, no PM would ever miss the opportunity to do a walk about in a disaster area. Might be a nice distraction for when she expels a certain ‘rogue’ MP! Make no mistake, once the flooding has receded, we can all look forward to Ardern visiting the region – frowny face is probably being rehearsed in front of a mirror as I type!

Been noticing there seems to be a narrative within the MSM over the last few days that in essence Gaurav Sharma is being a “petal” and that politics is “rough and tumble” and that Sharma needs to “harden up” and go along with things as that’s the way the system works.

Which, although on a practical/historical level perhaps there is some truth in this, but in today’s current “woke” (sorry perhaps a better word could be used?) climate that is an appalling position for the MSM to take because it is counter to everything they have been getting worked up against when they reign fury upon those that “transgress” against the modern narrative (such as the guy that put down Nadia Lim as one example).

So in the Sharma case, using their own “usual” MSM filter, surely they should be rallying against (instead of condoning on this occasion) …. perceptions of workplace & managerial bullying against Sharma, bullying of a “minority” (interestingly by stereotypical “white middle class Labour MP’s” aka pale stale male/female!), not taking Sharma’s claims seriously (eg “no proof given”), continuously calling him “rouge” (instead of a whistleblower), saying he’s not “suited” to being an MP and so on.

It makes one wonder (perhaps wrongly, but otherwise correctly perception wise) whether many in the MSM are being protective of both the Prime Minister and the Labour Party?

Do many of the MSM really fear a change of govt and/or seeing Ardern fall from grace?

If not, why aren’t they doing their jobs without perceived prejudice?

Of most concern is that they target children in particular Children are at least risk from covid and at most risk from the jabs. They are also at most risk of psychological and physical damage from the face muzzles.

I have a suggestion for the monitors.

Heavily down-ticked posts are eventually hidden. This is great. If you look at the posts at the end of the day, all of the socialist troll posts are still there, but not in your face. You can view the trolls’ posts if you feel like it, but the trolls aren’t able to ruin the flow and conversation of the blog, which seems to be their intention.

The thing I think could be improved is that I think that the number of down-ticks to hide a post should be reduced.

If you look at say the socialist Milky and his posts, they almost invariably eventually get hidden, but even for him it takes a long time to accumulate 40 down-ticks.

I think you should change the number of downticks required to hide post to say 10, rather than the current number (is it around 40)?

That’s my two cents worth…

About this “crusade” by Stuff & some MSM against VFF standing candidates in the local body elections.

I notice those MSM are using “fear” tactics by using headlines such as VFF want to make the country “ungovernable” (in other words they are portrayed as hard-core extremists).

Sorry I’m not up with the play, can someone please advise what was the context of VFF using the term “ungovernable” in the first place?

Asking as I presume it was used to highlight a particular issue (at one time) rather than wanting to continually make the nation “ungovernable” as the MSM are suggesting (so also want to understand the extent of whether the MSM are being “fair” (informing) or are actively “misleading” (spreading misinformation) etc).

    Stuff has also put an opinion piece up about why they produced a documentary called “Fire and Fury” (haven’t watched it, not going to waste my time) about the Wellington protest. It is entitled:

In this case, Kainga Ora has clearly stated in an OIA response that “Kainga Ora has no records of conflicts of interest from the facilitator at Ka Awatea. Nor was this position advertised; it was a jacked-up appointment, at a time when Nanaia Mahuta was Associate Minister of Housing, with delegated responsibility for Māori Housing, a role she held until the 2020 General Election in late October.

These are serious allegations, that go right to the heart of the probity of the Ardern government. There needs to be a full inquiry, completely independent of the Government.

I’ve been reading a bit of the Stuff hit pieces on VFF. I’m genuinely not sure about VFF – not 100% convinced about the ‘grassroots’ origin (very polished website so could be more astroturfing than grassroots) but they don’t look particularly dangerous either.

Regardless, I’m getting more than just a little frustrated at our pathetic MSM these days. Since when was it ok for “journalists” to go from objectively reporting the facts through to telling us who and who isn’t allowed to stand for election? Where is the balance? Where are the reports on labour-endorsed candidates having to sign a pledge to support labour party policy over local concerns?

Wouldn’t it be nice if journalists went back to reporting the facts and allowing their readers to judge for themselves? Or is thinking for ourselves no longer allowed?

      @Maggie… I know 3 folk who have each spent over 100k each on new cars. Two EV’s, one V8 petrol.
      No one needed to-go-to-the-bank tho.
