Rodney interviews Farmer James, towards the end he talks about his early opposition to the RMA in 1989.
Regarding the RMA our Nat MP of the time said as a new MP he had no idea of what he was voting for, he was just told , presumably by the National Party Whips, “Vote for this.”
Thanks Bolger and all the National Party for enacting another great piece of Labour’s socialist agenda, I guess we can look forward to more of this in the future.

  If I was to guess the majority of MPs have no idea of the ramifications of their voting, just following the party whip, it’s a scary way to run a country.

  Richard Prebble subsequently told me how pleased he was to slow the RM Bill (as it then was) down so it didn’t pass before the election.
  
  He was horrified that the Nats then passed it!!
  
  Socialism on Stilts he called it. And the National Party made it into law when Geoffrey Palmer could not get it passed his own Labour caucus.

    Indeed, and why the only way to keep National honest going forward is to ensure ACT has enough seats.
    
    Of course, if Maori holds the balance of power next election, I wouldn’t trust National not to do a deal with them, just like 2008, to reduce ACT’s influence, and rolling back co-governance be damned.

I well remember ACT’s Steven Franks saying ACT voted against a Bill because they had too little time to read it through, and He, Franks read Law quicker than most !

i thought parliaments rules shold have a wait period of 7 days between, putting forward a bill and it’s first debate. with no add ons !

It was all Simon Upton’s fault. Jim Bolger appointed him as Minister in charge of the Resource Management Bill. It was awaiting Third Reading (as I remember) and he completed the process with no changes. Frankly he and Jim should have sent it back to Select Committee for a further round of submissions following a change of government. Seems to me Simon was a Green Party undercover agent in the National Party.

  The National Party is full of them, anyway. They call themselves the Blue-Greens. I think DPF has admitted to being one. And it’s why National has no real policies to reduce property prices or energy prices because Green ideology demands these things get increasingly expensive. And because these things feed directly into the supply chain it’s a major component of the current inflation.
