    The manager and the 27 year employee worked together in the same shared office. They were the only two employees in that office. The review stated that during the discussion, which was not witnessed by any other person, there were raised voices (plural). It was also stated that during the argument, the 27 year veteran remained seated, while the other party was standing next to him, and she seemed angry and agitated. The conversation ended when the other party “swore, and left the office, slamming the door.” (A direct quote from the ERA judgement).
    
    It would appear that in this case, Fonterra has not exactly covered itself in glory.

      He was indeed micro managed.
      
      Were they stupid or was it intentional. It is often a strategy to get rid of an uncomfortable fit.
      
      The fact that the matter was taken up the chain of command tells me it was intentional.
      
      There is a lesson in here for all employees …. and employers for that matter. I think the employer was prepared to pay more to achieve the outcome! I also think the employee became blinkered by his own ego and/or anger.

Don’t waste a recession: Now is the chance to pursue sweeping deregulation – Cutting red tape sector by sector is too slow. Every department should be asked for a list of regulations that do not meet any cost-benefit test. We need a bonfire of red tape. Health, welfare and education all need to be significantly improved.

Mr Prebble predicts recession will be announced this week, based on the ANZ Truckometer, down 2.3 per cent in May.

    People are too scared to head out downtown Auckland, that includes the viaduct. Down town in Dunedin you still have to book for an important dinner or miss out, I hardly think Labours down down Beruit style Auckland is a very good guide anymore, sad, because I use to live wandering around down town Auckland when visiting

      It’s not just being scared. It’s also the quality of the whole experience.
      
      Who wants to drop $300 on a good meal, then have to walk back to your car stepping over pools of various body fluids, litter and vagrants?
      
      I’d rather go to a lower-tier restaurant closer to home, spend just $100 and have an overall much better experience.
      
      Or better yet, $60 down at the Indian and I can eat it in the comfort of my own home.

    Whilst recession may be the norm I recently spent two days plus waiting for a wife having had a serious stroke operation and start recovery.
    Sitting there waiting effectively for over two days, from helicopter delivery, is an eye opener as to what one could make of our society domiciled in Auckland.
    It is some years since having lived and work in Auckland to see the disparity of people going about their business in the main City Hospital.
    Brilliant staff from many very diverse ethnics, but overall the other patients are very similar that I have not considered or seen before.
    My wife was long distant St John to our home Hospital in Tauranga – which is ethnically totally different in the same way.
    Slow progress which may take months, but all have been wonderful and we are grateful for what we have seen and received from not only all levels of Medical staff, but those diverse total other people included in the medial arrangements.
    We are told 30 minutes was critical and they suceeded brilliantly.

  Yeah, but it won’t work. If a department wants to keep a regulation then there’s plenty of ways to get creative to ensure the cost-benefit stacks up. Such as, if it weren’t for the regulation forbidding the employment of children as chimney-sweeps, 15,437 children would now be employed as chimney-sweeps, 2,856 of them would be dead and 8,475 of them would be suffering from chimney-sweeping-related diseases or injuries.

  I’d have thought the time to make efficiencies is when everything is going well.
  I worked in a big company once, maybe the whole of a 10fl building plus branches in other cities.
  It get to my office I walked through a section of about 15 people who were basically sitting round, but times were good and nobody did anything until they were all deleted in a downturn
  To my mind they, and others like them, should have been gone in the good times so the company would have been better prepared for the next downturn
  Back in the pre Lange era NZ had a phenomenal sized state sector compared to recent times. There really was a ton of deadwood. Partially to disguise the true unemployment rate.
  Then along came Messrs Douglas, Prebble and put the lawn mower through the ranks . . . .

    As there is now following the Jacinda Labour disaster. I hear the Dept. of Ed. has taken legal action to prevent the layoffs.
    I can’t understand why the govt. doesn’t make an announcement that they are reducing the staff to April 2023 levels and give a scheduled layoff plan. They’re simply not weildig the axe sufficiently – at this rate we’ll be in recession for 2 more terms.

        The reason why I mention April 2023 is because this is when the massive influx of 18,000 extra state employees started. It could be said that it was the level deemed acceptable by the previous Labor government. Then the axe could be wielded in a further ‘progressive’ way.

      Some people I knew were made redundant when the MWD was shut down and were paid redundancies of about $70,000, which was more than half the price of a house I bought in Ngaio at the time.
      They immediately started new jobs at a consultants doing the same work, which of course still needed to be done
      A lot of long standing seat warmers retired very well off from a combination of redundancy and the government superannuation package if they’d been contributors.
      Plus national superannuation was very generous in those days
      Must have cost the government a fortune

Road safety campaigner apparently anxious about 110km speed limits in region where everyone agrees none of the roads qualify for 110km speed limits.
In fact where the resealing is breaking up after a few months the rural roads are barely safe at 50.
Thanks Ms Woods, closing the refinery was just one of Labour’s amazing decisions.

  What has closing the refinery got to do with the price of fish here?
  The refinery needed a very significant upgrade to keep it relevant and the commercial case of an upgrade did not stack up as far as the refining company and its shareholders were concerned. This meant if the refinery needed to stay open for strategic reasons then the Government would either have to subsidise the refinery either out of the taxpayers’ pockets or to impose an import duty on refined product. Taking emotion out of it, there was no strategic case to retain the refinery. This is especially as if any squeeze occurred it would more likely because of lack of crude oil feedstock rather than lack of overseas refinery capacity.

    Closing it is something I would argue against but could understand. What pisses me off the most though is that instead of simply mothballing the thing they filled all the pipes with cement so that the plant could never ever be recommissioned.

      According to a roading engineer friend, the bitumen problems are due to a 2021 rule change banning hot mix and changing to a water based emulsion. Absolutely nothing to do with closing Marsden Point.

        Very interesting, that makes sense as the seal appears to disappear when it rains.
        I was under the understanding that due to the refinery’s closure contractors were no longer able to make blends to specification but had to use whatever was imported.
        In fact is appears to be a Health and Safety plus decarbonising the economy, that’s making our roads dangerous.

      The actual refinery was only part of the facility. Storage tanks and the wharf and Wiri pipelines are a vital part of the petroleum distribution system. There is probably also some limited processing facilities such as a centrifuge. When bunker and other oils from the Rena were salvaged years ago they were most probably centrifuged to remove water then sold as bunker oil. It would have been tested to ensure it came within specification which would not be that tight.

      And sulphur – a waste byproduct from tehhigh sulphur oil the refinery used, which is vital for NZ soils and fertilizer. It was basically free, adn no has to be bought by the fert manufacturers.
      Regarding CO2, it is used in a lot of industrial and food processes other than beer. the cost for filling my small MIG welding tanks doubled.

  The government did not close the refinery. That would be the owners who are accountable to their shareholders.
  
  Would you have really cheered on Grant Robertson if he had acquired the refinery?
  
  Apart from rumours about inferior bitumen and a shortage of industrial carbon dioxide, has anyone been adversely affected? If these are actual problems, is the only solution a domestic oil refinery?
  
  Also the fuel security argument does not stack up. An international crisis would likely cut off crude oil as well as refined product. The small supply of domestically produced crude is not suitable for the refinery.
  
  I’m open to be convinced but I have not seen a good case yet. 🙂

      There are 2 refineries in Australia, one in Geelong (with production capacity about 30% higher than Marsden) and one in Brisbane (with production capacity similar to Marsden). It is very unlikely that they would provide “a more reliable supply of fuel” to NZ should a critical situation occur. The other closest refineries in “our region” are the ones in Indonesia (with only two of them with significantly larger production than Marsden) and Singapore.

      AFAIK (and I could be wrong here) Australia imports refined fuels itself.
      
      Back in the 1970s – even with the various sanctions in place – South Africa was exporting petrol to Australia.
      
      South Africa was diesel constrained. Due to the way things work, to make enough diesel meant that SA was making too much petrol. This was being sold to Australia in 1979.

    Jet fuel rework. We have had jet fuel requiring re-refining as not up to spec when tested. Used to be shipped to Marsden and reworked. Now it cant be done and we need a new shipment from offshore.
    
    Has happened a few times now and the result is that flights can be cancelled…

So the shipper and tanker operator need to take extra care to prevent contamination by not shipping particularly dirty product in the tanks to be used for (say) aviation fuel. Hopefully the product passes acceptance tests at the refinery gates and the testing company lives up to its certifications (an issue with reinforcing steel rod imports was that the supposedly internationally accredited testing organisation did not live up to its accreditation meaning the importer has to arrange extra testing on arrival).

    One thing about our own refinery, is that we can refine whatever we want from one shipment of crude, rather than relying on prerefined fuels which may not be what we need in times of trouble.
    It has been a problem with airlines at least twice with dodgy avgas. We used to just run it through the refinery to clean it up. Can’t do that now.

      Rejected AvGas can be blended with ordinary petrol and diesel as long as the blended stuff meets specification. This is done with the slops on the Wiri and Lyttelton-Heathcote pipelines where there is a change of product being piped.

Janet Dickson is facing a five year ban if her license is revoked – after she refused to complete a Te Tiriti training course.

In 2023 the Real Estate Agents Authority directed all real estate agents to undertake a course called Te Kākano – which was designed in partnership with Whakatāne-based tertiary institute Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi’.

Many of us voted to get rid of this nonsense, did we not?

  Had a trip from Hastings to Taupo – through Monday home yesterday.
  
  Cruised up in a line of traffic (left home at 10am) despite 80k speed limit average speed through the hills was 90/95ks, slowed somewhat by 5 stop lights for road works.
  
  Coming home yesterday, leaving Taupo at about 10.30am we were all on our own and cruised through the 80k area at 95/100kph most of the way. Only two sets of lights because there was intermittent rain so no major work happening..
  
  It was only as we approached Eskdale that we caught up with other traffic and one car came up behind us – his speed through the hills must have been in the 110 plus range I guess.
  
  It is obvious no one respects these 80k limits – trucks included.

  It’s growing the trees that does it.
  Saplings put down inconsequential amounts of wood and therefore take up little CO2. You have to wait 25 years before the effect really kicks in as the majority of the wood in a tree harvested at 30 years is put down in the last 5 years.

      I had non Hodgkin’s lymphoma and had chemo for 15wks. While this was going on I read that Sam Neil had the same and the chemo hadn’t worked.
      This rattled me a little and I mentioned it to the hematologist. He said don’t worry there’s 70 different types and his was entirely different

      I think I’m right in saying that was the type of cancer chemo was initially developed to treat

    Wow my mate had the chemo first then the lumpectomy after they had shrunk the tumour. She worked right through as a nurse except right after surgery. When you don’t have unlimited sick leave I guess you do what you need to. To be fair, my friend could have taken unpaid but SHE DIDNT NEED TO.

      Unlike a mastectomy a lumpectomy is not major surgery
      People react differently to chemotherapy, which also varies depending on the cancer being treated.
      My sister who was about the same age had a rough time both initially and when the cancer returned and is still feeling the effects more than twenty years on.

  If a backpacker comes here and does some casual work are they still a tourist? And how does immigration know?
  When I applied for NZ Superannuation there was some speculation as to whether I’d been in the country the required time period. The guy pushed some buttons on his keyboard and out came all this information about every time I’d been in and out of the country complete with flight and seat numbers.
  If I had a foreign passport the type of visa would pop up too, but do they know if you bring cash, use your credit card or atm or some other bank card such as ‘Passport’?

  I’ve always thought tourism is a false export for us or money-go-round between the cheap tourists and supermarkets and then the cafes etc they work in. Nothing is actually really produced. I also think the tourism industry body well and truly over states the amount their industry returns to the economy. The only countries where there is a good return is those that have a large poor population such as Thailand. And has all the wealthy tourists (just about anyone) lifted their ecomony.

I listen to Newstalk because some of it is interesting and I like Hosking but boy, oh, boy they’ve got some terrible presenters. Nasty Tim Beveridge and ardent lefty Tim Roxburagh (sp) for two. Beveridge is a shocker, he cuts callers off if they don’t agree with him and I even heard him call a caller a bitch one time. He strikes me as a very unhappy individual. Now I just turn those two clowns off when they come on.

RNZ wonders why we don’t trust the news. This morning Hipkins was given free rein to say in highly coloured language whatever he wanted, blackening Luxon and the government. No intervention by Corrin Dann. Yesterday Toby Jones on Jesse Mulligans show mentioned Ardern’s comment that they were the one source of truth. Shortly after there was an explanation that this might not have been what Ardern said.
( It actually was but RNZ often helps to rewrite history for Labour).
The same this morning when RNZ banged on about Lux0n’s clumsy comments they carefully explained to us who has gone on previous trade tours.
Nobody bothered to ‘correct’ what Hipkins ranted about Luxon.
They are so deeply biased they cannot even see it themselves.

  Haven’t listened to RNZ since about early last year. Gave up. As for Jessie Mulligan .. he’s lazy, never seemed to have done any prep nor research for his guests .. stopped listening to him but too long after he started.
  
  Part of giving up was the excessive use of Manglish. Speak English or Maori but not simultaneously .. no other bilingual country does this.

  It’s been happening for a while. When the mods start deleting comments without explanation it leaves the commenter with little or no idea what might be wrong with the comment. Also, some of the moderators don’t like comments about the moderation.

  You are incorrect. IIRC the moderators delete a tiny number of comments. About one percent or 4 or 5 on an average day.
  
  If you had 2 comments deleted that is about half of all the deletions. 😂
  
  If you reflect on the two comments that were deleted, I would hope that you would be sufficiently self aware to know why.
