  This mystical connection Maori have with whales is yet another recent invention.
  
  In 1970 60 or so sperm whales washed ashore north of Gisborne. Like half the rest of the town, the Garrett family went out to observe the phenomenon.
  
  I can remember crying – I was a very sensitive boy – because Maori were cutting jawbones off clearly still alive whales, while their kids amused themselves by pouring sand down their blowholes.
  
  Te Ara records “one instance” of chainsawing jawbones off – I recall there were several, but eyewitness evidence can be very unreliable. Especially that of a child 50 years later

        And if they really did have a mystical connection with whales, it would have been the tribes issuing warnings about an impending earthquake after 101 whales got stranded off Stewart Island on February 21 2011.
        
        No, it was only Ken Ring that warned about beached whales a few weeks earlier as sign to watch for as prelude to a major after shock he predicted sometime between 15th Feb 2011 and 23rd Feb 2011.
        
        And I don’t see any evidence of Maori out campaigning to stop overseas sea anchored wind turbines, as evidence mounts for increasing Whale stranding and deaths as a result of the low frequency rumbling at the turbine base, and the penetrating sonar used to comprehensively map the sea floor in preparation for turbine and of course the invasive construction.

        The Maori word for whale is ‘paraoa’ if my memory serves me well. The Whangaparoa peninsula is ‘the place to see whales’ – or similar. Maori used to hunt whales for food. I guess they took the small ones, because to attack a full grown one in their single hulled canoes would be disiaster – unless they still used the twin hull/outrigger canoe as in the Pacific islands. There were still twin hulled canoes in use when Cook arrived.
        Also, ‘paraoa’ is the Maori word for bread – if I recall correctly.

      Another myth worth dispelling is the wonderful socialist society that existed in these islands pre European arrival. After Māori had conducted a real 24 carat genocide on the Chatham Islands and enslaved those they deemed worthy of working to death the Crown had no authority to interfere because it was considered as Māori affairs that existed before the Crowns authority over New Zealand so it carried on. The crown did eventually intervene and put a stop to it. Maybe the Māori party should study this event so as to gain a more robust understanding of what constitutes a genocide. It would be a shame for them to let the resources of their own history allow them to continue in their misunderstanding of such a weighty term.

    The notion that Maori are better stewards of the land on the basis of their ethnicity is absolute bollocks.
    
    Before human settlement in NZ, this land was 85% forest. Whwn europeans began to settle in this country, the amount of Forest had been reduced to 53-55% by a Maori population estimated to be 90,000 nationwide.

      Why did such a small human population inflict so much damage? Perhaps because they were also at war, there was no mechanism to come to agreement on sustainable use of the protein sources? Each tribe had an incentive to hunt as much as possible.

        One possible reason is the severe lack of available protein sources. The most available protein would have been fish and shellfish. Certainly the shellfish got hammered as witnessed by the declining size of shells found in middens across historical layers. Fish harvesting dodgy with bone hooks and flax string.
        I would put diet down as the number one reason for pre-eiropean extinctions

    Yup, there’s certainly a lot of homelessness in Christchurch. Every day I drive past two areas where people park up over night (and one or two people make tarp tent shacks in the bushes.
    
    Some of these people are driven to this, but some are choosing it. There are some pretty up-market camper vans at some of these spots.
    
    I think that the one concern that keeps the numbers relatively low is security. This is probably why there are a few people in groups.

      For the last 6 months or so we have had a joker living in his car parked on private property, on the driveway to a garage at the rear of a rest home in our street but, they never seemed to go near him. During the day he would stand by his car and scruffy itinerants would come and go.
      
      mrspdm and I were of the view that he was peddling drugs. Police cars are in our street fairly regularly as we live across the road from Cornwall Park in Hastings.
      
      In the last couple of weeks the car (somewhat of a wreck which I doubt is driveable) sits there but there is no sign of its former occupant.
      
      Jail maybe?
      
      We find it hard to believe that the rest home management allowed him to be there in the first place and tolerate his car in his absence.

  Regarding housing, for every problem there is a government solution? No!
  What the govt needs to do is get out of the way and let the market provide.
  
  The govt could get rid of the regulations around landlords and rental houses and let the market work. There are basic tenants that will take very basic housing because it is affordable.
  
  At our church there was a lady I’ll call Mary who was an ex street kid who hardly washed and had lots of cats and other animals. She wasn’t a good tenant. But for years until her death she lived in very basic accommodation provided by a local landlord at a price she could afford.
  That’s what’s needed. Get rid of the regulations and let the market work.
  
  Lastly stop flooding the country with thousands more people every year in the form of mass immigration. Let the market catch up.
  Those two measures and we’d see a lot less homelessness.

    Correct.
    
    These regulations requiring heat pumps, double glazing, excessive restrictions against eviction etc etc have both cut down the housing stock as well as removed all the basic accommodation.
    
    I am sure living in a house with double glazing is nice and warm (I’ve never done it though) but it is expensive. If I was renting, I think I’d prefer to spend $100 a week less on rent and rather wear an extra layer.

    Yup I have a neighbour who provides very basic accommodations in Woolston (chch) he has half a dozen places. I was a bit shocked when I saw them that people live there but for a couple hundred a week with large sections for their many cars and out of the way of more law abiding types, it probably wasn’t a big deal.
    
    I don’t think he rents them anymore as they defo don’t meet HH and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t lodge a bond for them. I imagine they will be sold for development in the next few years as woolston is rebuilt following the gelatine factory “accidental” fire.

    (Hot/cold) running water? Flush toilets? Lining on walls? Any weathertightness (rain/wind) rules? Eviction on 24 hour notice?

      Like poverdee and poverty, “too basic” doesn’t mean what it did.
      
      The house my family and I have owned and lived in for the last 11 years is not up to scratch according to rental laws and would be “too basic”. Suits us fine though.
      
      The house we owned previous to that would also be deemed “too basic”.
      
      What is so special about Aotearoans that they can’t live in basic houses? Do you really “deserve” to live in a fancy warm house just because of the complete accident of being born in NZ?

      Running water presumably ( I didn’t run the taps). I would think no insulation as the wall coverings were original with a coat of paint or three over the wall paper probably 30 years ago. Original 1950 carpet, kitchen, wiring, bathroom etc. gaps under doors etc letting in drafts, no fixed heating or extractor fans, dirty and probably cold….. but actually prob not too different from the place I lived in as a student in the 90s except that was clean at least.

  The applications may not succeed but rent arrears are easy to prove.
  
  Family may not be aware, but landlords certainly are and may decide they are not charities.

    Scott – I still do not buy the incompetency argument – it is simply too incompetent to be real. Too many things were ‘overlooked’. The first building that the SS would have secured was the one where the gunman was positioned. To say, “oops. we missed that….” – Nah, that is not believable.
    
    I also don’t buy that this 20-year-old Patsy was the lone culprit. That too is also just too obvious. Planted to distract is my hunch.

      That is exactly the sort of “report” you should be enormously skeptical of.
      Firstly, you aren’t even reporting it right it wasn’t Iran threatening to assassinate Trump. If Iran was threatening to do something, then you would have heard it from Iran. It was a report of a threat from Iran to assassinate someone, not the same thing.
      Secondly, it wasn’t even a report, it was a report OF A report. Some anonymous people have told CNN that some other anonymous person has information about an assassination attempt from Iran. No more details given.
      So, what is more likely here?
      That Iran is planning an extremely difficult and dangerous assassination attempt with highly uncertain outcomes plus that some guy who knows about it goes to the USA government who then leak it to the press OR that some people (pro Trump, anti-Iran, pro-Israel or just nutcases) wish to put it about that they do?
      If you had solid information about an ongoing assassination plot you would never make it public, that would tip your hand.
      This is dust and smoke with zero solid information in it.

David Seymour’s proposed legislation should not mention the Treaty of Waitangi, but instead just say that Government’s right to govern, the protection of legal property, and equality of New Zealanders rights and responsibilities, are presently questioned enough to require clarification – and that secularity of Government and its functions are also an issue.

But too late, it will likely be introduced next week with a little chaos

    It is pointless now of course to suggest any alternative, but had legislation been framed only on the circumstances that the likes of the pharmacy union (Chemists, for God sake!) is subservient now to a document that states Maori did not cede sovereignty, among many others, which can justify a law that asserts simply “the Government has the right to govern”. That need not directly relate to the Treaty, but would in after-action quash any Maori setting up an independent Government, as being unlawful. Likewise a statement that Government and its services are secular, would in a backlash knock on the head much of te Ao o Maori – of the Maori world-view, that portion which is religious.
    
    The legislation could have been in two steps:
    first, establish simple law which (the tyranny of the) majority accept
    second, use that law to sort out the Treaty mess.
    
    Simply put – Is the Maori / Crown agreement, the Treaty of Waitangi, against the UN Declaration of Human Rights?

Good news, Good news, TV1 has announced that there will be a totally new 95% Maori show added to their programming and its also Good news for the taxpayers as there will be zero extra costs , the only small cost will be running the competition for school children to pick an appropriate Maori name for TV1s exisisting Breakfast program, yeeeee haaaa.

Can anyone help?

About a year ago, I read a story about how dividends paid to the govt by the electricity generators had increased since part privatisation, even though the govt holding had reduced from 100% to 50%. However, I can’t remember the source.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    I have some shares in Meridian and Mercury. The dividends they pay are quite modest. Probably just below what bank’s term deposits pay. The increase in the value of shares is quite good though, particularly for Meridian shares.

  I think that’s a tad unreasonable to be fair.
  
  While the old British Rail was awful, I think you’ll find that privatisation has not been an unqualified success either – in fact, it’s often just as bad, and frequently, worse than the old BR.
  
  Privatisation tends to work best when there is real and tangible competition. It stops monopolistic behaviour and effective rent seeking. There are many areas where privatisation is fantastic – compare the old state monopoly phone & power with the private versions – may not be perfect, but significantly better on many orders of magnitude.
  
  Railways have proven to be difficult (as has the water privatisation) – some form of re-nationalisation of the railways actually seems to have wide public support.
  
  Nationalising the railways might not be a success but I don’t think it’s reasonable to pretend that privatisation has been a roaring success either.

  I’ve noticed that there is an attitude from some that those who believe in the danger of the experimental chemical are a bit reactionary and a bit thick.
  They also fear the potential for ridicule for admitting to the same concerns.
  They therefore head for the centre of the flock on the moral high ground and engage in denialism, regardless of the facts.
  Don’t forget that the whole purpose of the propaganda was to instill mass fear.

    IAR: indeed I am reminded of what my ex-profession did back in those days to Dr Igor Semmelweis – who was basically single-handedly responsible for the survival of untold postpartum mothers (until the theory and practice of antisepsis was finally acknowledged by the mainstream profession). He died a broken man quite quickly after being abused in a lunatic asylum — which the likes of the then-Medical Council, Bloonfields and Arderns of his era hmd literally not metaphorically driven him to be incarcerated in. Simply because he wanted everybody involved in intra- and post-partum care to Wash. Their. Hands.
    
    In New Zealand we still have an enormous amount of people unwilling to admit that they could possibly have been wrong, which means that they are completely willing to injure and kill more it people by insisting on the continued use of a vaccine series which – and this can’t be said too often – not only doesn’t prevent infection, it doesn’t prevent transmission. Therefore it is entirely immoral for me to insist that you should be vaccinated – and take the risks of being vaccinated – because I am fearful that I may catch it off you. Because the vaxjab does not stop transmission. (And for those late to the party, the original Pfizer study on which the MedSafe recommendation said it was safe to use and that it would stop transmission as well as severe infection, never tested for this.
    
    Sometimes actually I am pleased that I am no longer allowed to be in practice in New Zealand, to misquote Groucho Marx – ‘why would I want to be a member of this club if they would have me.’

  The real interesting bit is Trump asking RFK Jnr to endorse him. That would come with some sort of promise and I wouldn’t mind betting that would be the job of the Attorney General in the Trump administration. That would give RFK Jnr free rein to go hard on Fauci and the entire COVID industrial complex.
  
  RFK jnr also very anti-Ukraine war (just like JD Vance).

    RFK jnr. maybe a bit flakey but framing his campaign as a crusade to make America healthy again is a very good idea. If RFK gets a cabinet position in a Trump administration he could do some real work, not just shout from the sidelines.
    The semi-flakey hippy-dippy eco-alternative medicine crowd is a real constituency, Trump could build some bridges there.

  More likely the shots came from behind him, and the snipers killed him to close the case.
  How could the snipers kill him within 4 or 5 seconds and not be able to see him setting up.
  I think the company had their own shooter and the snipers only job was to kill the kid after the shooting .

Graham Mokaraka was in the public gallery and jumped a 1.8metre high glass barrier in the High Court at Napier on September 11 last year in order to attack the man who murdered his daughter.

Richard Arnold on Mike Hosking update, 17 July 2024: Arnold parrots Democrat talking points about J.D. Vance’s long-ago (2016?) view of Trump (unaware that a man may change his mind on a person for reasons not involving money or power), goes relatively easy on Trump himself. This will be the last time he does not attack.

Hosking nods along. It seems to me Arnold’s content is phoned in, as some sort of contractual obligation of NZME. One hopes that eventually the contract is discontinued.

Later Hosking continues his usual tone of comments about Trump (non-slanderous though not actively positive). I imagine he prefers Trump, or is close to it, but the code of ethics for NZ media personalities means you cannot outright praise Trump.

  I worked in a Structure Engineering office back in the eighties and one of our colleagues was a draughtsman who found himself riding shotgun for his mate who was some kind of drug dealer
  He told us one day the previous evening his mate had picked him up and they’d gone round to a guy’s place to discuss an overdue account.
  The guy couldn’t pay so he broke his ankles with a baseball bat!
  He then made him ring ahead to the next guy on his list and what do you know by the time they got to his place he had the money ready.
  Our mate was a bit of a hard looking character, but he found that style of debt collecting fairly intense

I know this was a subject of a post here the other day, but I wonder of anyone has given thought to whether Debbie Ngarewa Packer’s words on TV amount to hate speech?
S61 of the Human Rights Act provides that it is unlawful
“to use in any place words which are threatening, abusive, or insulting if the person using the words knew or ought to have known that the words were reasonably likely to be…..broadcast by means of… television,—
being matter or words likely to excite hostility against or bring into contempt any group of persons in New Zealand on the ground of the colour, race, or ethnic or national origins of that group of persons.”
Presumably the assertion that the National party are “white supremacists” is based on the colour of their skin, and it is hard to imagine a genocide being perpetrated by someone of the same racial background.
I know the call from DPF was for Labour and the Greens to get Te Pati Maori to pull their heads in from inflammatory speech, but has anyone contemplated that the rhetoric is unlawful?
