    Second, you’re missing the mark with Kamala Harris. There are numerous news stories and videos highlighting her as the first Indian-American Vice President, including videos where she herself mentions this.
    
    Now, she identifies as Black and uses different accents when addressing Black audiences. Beyond patronising.

    Did you actually watch the Q and A session, Tom? Trump handled the hostile environment and toxic posturing very well. It’s true that Harris has promoted herself in the past as Indian/ South Asian, yet now she is rebranding herself as ‘black’- ie African American. The truth hurts, eh!       That was an audience who are very aware of Cultural Appropriation and how many people try to take advantage of it for their own benefit.
      They also know how fake Harris is- and she didn’t even bother to turn up after being invited. Just last night she put on a fake Southern accent whilst talking to an audience in Atlanta. You’all this and you’all that. It was embarrassing.
      For a long time she made hay out of being Indian and suddenly she changed to be Black- people know this…
      Beside current Polling show Trump with an historic 22+% support from Blacks
      44% from Hispanics too.
      Trump scored major points at the conference with his remarks about how illegal immigrants are taking Blacks jobs. Again, the audience knows this.

        Her mother is from Kerala in India. Her father is a West Indian ( Jamaica?) with mixed Black, Scottish or Irish heritage. We know that the black slaves in the West Indies & and the USA are from Africa.

More Olympdics controversy, Italian boxer Angela Carini has quit after one punch by Imane Khelif (gender diverse person). I’m so confused was he she born a female but has too much testosterone or is there bits missing/indeterminate? Still I suppose it’s easier to masquerade as a female in lose boxer shorts (literally) than say a sport like beach volleyball where their costumes leave nothing to the imagination.

Neighbour’s (Wellington) electricity went off at about 5pm Wednesday and phoned me to see if it was a widespread failure which it was not. Looked at the neighbour’s modern meter and the LED lights were off so I told neighbour it was probably the pole fuse and to call the power retailer. Salt spray from the harbour can blow quite a way inland in strong winds and most probably had seriously corroded the pole fuse fitting.
Anyway someone turned up the next day and basically concluded the same thing. The householder was advised they would have to get a bucket truck to access the fuse and that would require traffic management and the dreaded red cones. So about 4pm (about 23 hours later!) the fuse holder and fuse were replaced and the neighbour had power.
In the old days a faultman would have turned up within two hours or less and fixed it himself. Indeed a faultman did that just months previously when another neighbour lost electricity and the fuse holder also had to be replaced. I wondered what happened in the interim for there to be such a change in policy.
I am wondering if it is because Health & Safety requirements and traffic management requirements have gone crazy. Possibly company directors and senior managers have gone paranoid since a significant accident on their patch could see themselves personally fined vast sums or thrown into prison.

    The other day, in a provincial city, I witnessed a slew of road cones reducing a two way road to one way at a time , controlled at both ends by temporary lights and a contractor , all to allow some tree work , over a pedestrian pavement ……..when there was already adequate space for parking along side the carriageway where the work was being done , which could have been cancelled and the tree contractors could have safely operated from there , without all the “traffic management” .
    
    I dread to think what the bill was .

      Somewhere near Kaiapoi last weekend a roadside was lined with cones and signage for, literally, several hundred metres. My daughter and I were wondering what was going on, but eventually we spotted a small hole, maybe 2m x 1m, dug a metre or so from the side of the road. Maybe fixing a leak in a pipe? Hard to tell as we drove by, there was nobody there because it was the weekend. Anyway, it was a completely ridiculous number of cones. The only logical explanation involved a charge per cone, per day.

Should Israel have assassinated Haniyeh? On balance it was the wrong move, unless you wanted to stop any ceasefire negotiations in their tracks. Perhaps wait a few months might have been a better strategy, although “never miss an opportunity to take an opportunity”.

  He was evil and there was never going to be peace under him. The idea that ceasefire negotiations were possible has always just been a lie Hamas has used to make Israel look bad and when ceasefires happen, Hamas ALWAYS breaks them.
  Yes, there is also never going to be peace under the next guy.
  Yes, they will claim retribution when they commit the next attack they had planned, but that attack was coming anyway.
  Removing Haniyeh doesn’t change the deeply bred hatred from Hamas one way or another.
  
  Why do it then? Because Israel could. It’s easy for those evil pieces of crap to send others to become martyrs but they never had any intention of becoming martyrs themselves.
  They are utterly secular (as shown by his lifestyle after stealing billions from his own people) and therefore the idea that Israel can reach them and hold them accountable for their crimes will scare them.
  Let those cockroaches (the murderous leadership) live their lives in fear. Let their underlings whose lives they show no regard for see how much their leadership cares for their own lives, how they are just pawns. Maybe, those underlings will learn they are being lied to – the true abusers of the Palestinian people are their leaders and that has always been the case.
  
  The fact that Israel planted the bomb two months ago in the hopes that a worthwhile target would sleep in that room at some point in the future should scare all of the terrorist scumbags and that’s a good thing.

        I have never said that Israel will lay down their arms. All I have said is that this war will keep escalating, as it has for the past 9 months.
        
        In my view, there is no realistic solution to this situation. No one has a solution that makes any sense. And don’t for one minute think that Israel has a solution by massacring Gaza – that obviously just makes it worse.
        
        Neither side will stop. Neither side will win.

    They didnt even see it coming.

I haven’t been all over the Olympics but I love to see those who work hard, discipline their lives and show a powerful focus on achieving, getting rewarded.

In a world that grows paler, rejects meritocracy, rewards laziness it’s refreshing to see two Kiwi women bring home the bacon in the double sculls. All those cold dark mornings pushing their body to the limit paid off. Good on them.

  I was watching Lucy Spoors and Brooke Francis yesterday and pointed out their timing to my partner. Timing and duplicate action. When the camera viewed them front on both oars at the back were perfectly parallel with the oars at the front throughout the whole movement. Same depth in the water, same oar turning.     Rowing provides focus just about more than any other sport. It is particularly good for late teenage boys. Iwas once talking with an NZ richlister whose son was totally into rowing, so much so his school grades improved as well .
    I witnessed Wybo Veldman in the mid-60’s take up rowing. He had been into horses and wanted a change; consequently a Gold Medal in the 8’s in 1972 after years of HARD training.

  I quite enjoy `Big Gerry’s’ relaxed style but, he got it wrong with the ACT pins although the party did not help themselves once he made his ruling.
  
  If he follows up by returning to a dress code of ties for men and no hats or Hamas terrorist scarves etc in the chamber it will be a good move.
  
  He also needs to knock Peters often idiotic supplementary questions and pointless points of order on the head a bit quicker. As well as the

    The business committee, which act are part of made the decision.
    
    The third issue is about Act MPs wearing their party logos on their lapels. It would not be an issue at all if Act MP Cameron Luxton and National’s James Meager had not objected last week to Te Pāti Māori MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke having a party logo on her laptop. She had to cover it up. When the issue was raised this week at the business committee, it was decided to extend it to all logos – including the Act broaches that can be easily seen on television coverage of Parliament. Former Speaker Trevor Mallard gave Act dispensation a few years ago. Brownlee, as is his right, has decided there should be one rule for all. In this case, Brownlee should do nothing except enforce the rule and allow no member of the Act Party to ask or answer questions until all its MPs comply. Their choice.

Dunedin City Councillor – Lee Vandervis is under constant attack from his fellow Councillers for being a racist. He has been called a “stale, pale male” in Council meetings by other Councillors (which went unpunished).

ALL Councilors voted in support of the Code of Conduct against Vandervis.

That means I now only have one DCC Councillor that I can vote for next year. Vandervis is not perfect, but he is the only one who is NOT a racist.

      According to their LinkedIn profiles, Sara Tolbert came to NZ about 5 years ago and Mahdis Azarmandi first came to NZ in 2014 to do a PhD in “peace and conflict studies” and then returned about 5 years ago to take up a job at the Canterbury.
      
      It’s pretty much the same for a number of “imported” MP’s, particularly from the Green Party. Again, there’s nothing wrong with a foreign born MP, but perhaps they should get to know what makes this country tick first, before they hang a green coloured pendant off their necks and lecture the rest of us on the evils of colonisation.

Judge Andrew Menary said his decision to allow Axel Rudakubana to be named was exceptional given the boy’s age.

Rudakubana, who police said was born in Wales, faces three counts of murder over the deaths of Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, in the seaside town of Southport in northwest England.

Sunny Western Australia has so much solar generation of power that at times it threatens to overwhelm the power grid in the south-western corner of the state, where most people live.

The grid is isolated, so power can’t be passed on to neighbouring systems.

West Australia instead is developing huge battery systems. Both the state’s utility, Synergy, and a private venture have big projects on the way, and the states is also trying to encourage smaller community battery systems to store mid-day energy.

  This sounds smart on the surface. I presume that the domestic owner will sell the power to the grid for a small return then buy it back at retail. Win/win I think. People will get into the habit of using power for thing like washing clothes and running dishwashers while the sun is shining so as not to pay for power at night.
  The power companies get to buy power without having the cost of generating it then selling it at night when there’s no sun.
  Is there a downside? I’m sure the usual suspects will howl that the big greedy power retailers are ripping off the consumer, I wonder if that would be borne out by facts?

Fascinating insight on how low-intelligence limits your understanding of the world: (Originally a sequence of posts on 4-chan, so edited for tone)

I did IQ research as a grad student, and it involved a lot of this stuff. Did you know that most people (95%+) with less than 90 IQ can’t understand conditional hypotheticals? For example:
“How would you have felt yesterday evening if you hadn’t eaten breakfast or lunch?”
“What do you mean? I did eat breakfast and lunch.”
“Yes, but if you had not, how would you have felt?”
“Why are you saying that I didn’t eat breakfast? I just told you that I did.”
“Imagine that you hadn’t eaten it, though. How would you have felt?”
“I don’t understand the question.”
It’s really fascinating. We did research on convicts in San Quentin. They’re absolute retards, at least 50% illiterate.

Other interesting phenomenon around IQ involves recursion. For example:
“Write a story with two named characters, each of whom have at least one line of dialogue.”
Most literate people can manage this, specially once you give them an example.
“Write a story with two named characters, each of whom have at least one line of dialogue. In this story, one of the characters must be describing a story with at least two named characters, each of whom have at least one line of dialogue.”
If you have less than 90 IQ, this second exercise is basically completely impossible. Add a third level (‘frame’) to the story, and even IQ 100’s start to get mixed up with the names and who’s talking.
Turns out Scheherazade was an IQ test!

We never did that, but time is practically impossible to understand for sub 80’s. They exist only in the present, can barely reflect on the past and can’t plan for the future at all.
Sub 90’s struggle with anachronism too. For example, I remember the 80-85’s stumbling on logic problems that involved common sense anachronism stuff.
For instance:
“Why do you think that military strategists in WWII didn’t use laptop computers to help develop their strategies?”
“I guess they didn’t want to get hacked by nazis?”
Admittedly you could argue that this is a history knowledge question, not quite a logic sequencing question, but you get the idea. Sequencing is super hard for them to track, but most 100+ have no problem with it, although I imagine that a movie like Memento strains them a little. Recursion was definitely the killer, though. Recursive thinking and recursive knowledge seems genuinely hard for people of even average intelligence (although at San Quentin there weren’t too many of those!)

On the last point, it’s the main reason why so many people with sub-90 IQ are sociopathic or psychopathic. They don’t have the mental computing power to model other people’s thoughts and feelings. I’ve seen it millions of times with convicts.
“How do you think that man felt when you beat him?”
“Dunno.”
“How do you think that boy’s mother felt when she heard that her son was dead?”
“Dunno.”
It comes across as psychopathic, but these people literally don’t have the brainpower to build even a crude model of someone else’s mind, let alone populate it with events that are in the past.

NZTA and the numerous local councils in NZ are failing miserably in their mission to line every road and street with orange road cones.

Only today I drove down several of my local streets and there was not a road cone to be seen ! Traffic was flowing normally and smoothly, drivers were courteous, although cyclists as usual were happily riding two or three abreast in the main carriageway instead of in their designated lanes.

This is not good enough!
The controllers of road cones must be brought to account: NZ used to be the country known for its 60m sheep. No more.
We swapped sheep for road cones, but 60m is at present a distant target.
Come on NZTA ! Come on councils !
Use our taxes and rates to sustain those Cone Suppliers !

      Kamala Devi Harris’s mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was an Indian Tamil, born in India when it was a British colony.
      
      Harris’s father, Donald, was from Jamaica. Reported at a genealogy site: “Recalling the lives of his grandmothers, Donald Harris wrote that one was related to a plantation owner while the other had unknown ancestry.
      
      Plantation owner? Kamala Harris seems thus to be descended from a slave owner, and likely also from an African slave in the West Indies.
      
      The genealogy site (link below) adds that due to the history of slavery in Jamaica, Donald Harris may indeed be also be of African descent.
      
      Both Kamala Harris’s parents were academics.

Why do they keep on resisting and protesting and denying ?
If there was any group of people who identify as “maori” in NZ who would benefit most from the immediate injection of Waitangi Settlement funds it is them.
But for some reason they constantly allow their “spokespeople” to fuck up their negotiations.

  I’m sick of the PM grovelling in front of tribal elites. He has designated ministers to deal with Maori affairs, yet he continues to show up for ritual humiliation, handing the MSM a golden opportunity to make hay out of this latest incident. Maori get amazing special treatment, including seemingly incredible access to the PM which the rest of us would never be afforded.

  So they are going to the High Court to ask it to prevent Parliament from legislating? Perhaps some education on the “rights and privileges” of citizenship, including the respective roles of Parliament and the Courts, is needed. Or do those things only apply when it suits? As seems to be the case with justice and democracy?

    Ngapuhi are their own worst enemy. They revel in their reputation as the most warlike of the tribes earnt as a result of their regular raids into Auckland to rape and pillage.
    They can’t even settle on who is going to negotiate treaty settlements on heir behalf because of local egos, negotiations have taken many years longer than they should.
    They feel that the world owes them a living, their tribal elite drive round in expensive 4wds while their own people can’t get off the couch due to dope, p and government welfare.
    Northland should be an economic powerhouse due to its pristine coastline, benign climate and outstanding natural beauty. Tourists should be able to visit without fear of being robbed or worse.
    The tribal leaders need to take a long, long hard look at themselves.
