A UK academic notes that many of the rioters are 40+, and theorises it’s because they are not digital natives and are therefore vulnerable to misinformation.

It doesn’t seem to have occurred to her that it’s because the over 40s aren’t digital natives that they are disillusioned through life experience about the lies they are told by politicians, activists, academics and other barrow-pushers.

My view is that the under 40s digital natives can’t see the wood for the trees because have been groomed since birth.

  The internet springs from ARPAnet in 1962. That’s 62 years ago. The world wide web dates from 1991. That’s 34 years ago.
  
  Folk who grew up with MS-DOS, Linux, and early Windows, with slow modems on old phone networks. Folk who often built their own computers and delved into PC registers. These aren’t “digital natives”?
  
  The term’s just more spouting from the armies of social science academics.

Last night, Wednesday, I watched 1 News, so you don’t have to.

The second item was: “Controversial move to get rid of Maori wards!” The protestors in Kaipara got lots of air time but there was little or no mention of the reason why Maori wards are likely to go. The simple truth is, when put to the vote, most people don’t want Maori wards.

Then an item on US politics: Democrat Tim Walz is marvellous and normal and the other side is weird. “A battle for the soul of America”, with no doubt which presidential candidates are on the side of the angels. And it’s not the Republicans!

The next item was the repeal of the cultural requirement that Maori children have to go to Maori families, 7AA. Barnados CEO spoke against the repeal of 7AA. Starship foundation acting director, a Maori guy, also spoke against repeal of 7AA. Two children, both part Maori, also spoke against the repeal.

The minister was interviewed in a hostile manner, “are you up to the job?” Karen Chour got no respect for being a Maori woman herself, being an Act MP cancels all minority status. If she was a Green MP there would have been an enquiry into the challenges she faces from “toxic masculinity”!

Then another race based item, Paul Goldsmith getting rid of Te Reo words in Matariki celebrations! Not Aotearoa NZ in his official correspondence but just NZ! Horrors! Questions were raised about the government’s commitments to Te Reo!

One wonders why does the government continue to own and at least partly fund TVNZ? Given its unremitting hostility to right of centre governance shouldn’t it just be sold? While it may still be worth something?

    TVNZ could be run by AI. Take the views, hopes and aspirations of a normal person and then tack three standard deviations leftwards:
    
    A young working man working for a small plumbing business which employed him as an apprentice and has him around for beers or Friday night dinner suddenly becomes a union thug agitating against his employer for some imagined health and safety infraction or a payrise from non-existent profits.
    
    A 40 something Maori dad working hard to pay his mortgage and send his teenagers to a good school and take his family to Queensland for a holiday suddenly becomes a teenaged solo mum seeking more welfare or an activist denigrating colonialism while simultaneously demanding many millions for yet another redistribution of wealth to the same failed programme.
    
    A 30 year old married woman with a good job in a corporate career most concerned with starting a family and buying a house suddenly becomes a girl boss surrounded by male predators in her office or hemmed in by a “glass ceiling” holding her career back from any further progression.
    
    A teenaged girl most concerned with her schoolwork, her friends, cute boys, her soccer game on Saturday and the latest viral video suddenly becomes terrified of her future due to climate change alarmism or her gender identity or other imagined mental health crisis typical of the current year.

  The beat up over the Goldsmith invitation to the Australian minister is bizarre. The invitation was signed by Goldsmith, and he understandably wanted to keep it simple, using the country’s official name and so forth. It was between him and the Australian minister, nobody else on the planet would have been aware of this ‘scandal’ had the media not seemingly obtained a copy of it. So is this public servants ‘dobbing in’ the government again? It looks like it.
  The first night they ran the story the odious Benedict Collins was badgering Goldsmith about this trivial non-story, then Willie Jackson was interviewed where he went to town about how appalling it all is. The mainstream media are pathetic, but we already knew that.

    Imagine how confused Paul, not to mention MFAT, would be to receive a letter from his Australian counterpart with words from one of the many traditional languages scattered throughout.
    
    Apart from being incomprehensible, it’s just downright ill-mannered to send such a letter, Given that diplomacy is about relationships and communications, using the Maori language in this way is just bizarre.

    The test, as it always is with this nonsense, is that the TVNZ tweets and their online story about this affront to our taonga that is te reo were all written in…. English.
    And why is that? So that people understand what is being communicated.
    Why do TVNZ not put out all their stuff in te reo? Because they would lose audience as no one would know what they’re going on about and they would lose more money to the point of being unsustainable and bust.
    So why is it a scandal when Paul Goldsmith does it?

  Totally agree Scott. In each iof these items there was no effort to provide a balanced view. Why would Goldsmith address his Australian recipient in a language the Australian would not understand ? Why were the vox pops from the US totally pro-Harris and anti-Trump. If the election is 50/50, should we believe everyone on the street was pro-Harris ? Why was there no effort to explain the Kaipara council’s viewpoint ? Given the level of child abuse and murder in ‘Aotearoa’, are there any stats showing which ethnicities are most dangerous for children ? What does Barnados and Starship make of that ? We will never know.

  There is no such place as AotearoaNZ.
  
  Our country’s name is either New Zealand (if you are communicating in English) or Aotearoa (if you are communicating in Maori).
  
  Using both makes no sense.

    The land that makes up NZ is referred to as Nu Tireni the 1835 Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand; and in the ToW.
    
    Kaumatua Edward Ellison from South Island Ngai Tahu says Aotearoa originally referred solely to the North Island. South Island Maori have and had a different name which included the land in both North and South islands.
    
    Hawaiki Tautau is what Taranaki iwi call the land. Whatever it is it’s up to Maori to decide on a universal te reo word for the country – good luck with that. The English word for the country is New Zealand. As you’ve said, in English the country isn’t Aotearoa New Zealand.

  Re the Goldsmith beat up. Reading the NZ Herald over my French toast this morning, there’s a full page advert from the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China. Its a full page article. Not a skerrick of mandarin anywhere, and of course not. If you’re trying to communicate with someone why would you insert words or phrases from a language that your readers don’t understand, what useful purpose would it serve. You can imagine if that was reversed. The page would be full of Manglish, words doubled up in with the English one alongside a Maori one
  Also worth noting the Consulate-General refers to his country as China, not Zhōngguó China, nor just Zhōngguó – mandarin for their country.

  Noisy protests at the Kaipara meeting. Maori ward councillor Pera Paniora said after the meeting that the council decision was undemocratic because the community had not had a chance to have its say. No doubt she and other protesters this week said the same after the meeting when the earlier undemocratic decision was made.

  The folk at The Standard are in melt down over the abolition of Maori wards in Kaipara. A comment:
  
  “Expect mysterious acts of arson against civic infrastructure in Kaipara….I am not sure if the Pakeha settler class quite grasps how many marginalised Maori are not as hung up as they are on law and order and following the “rules”, especially the order bit.”
  
  I promise no more quotes from The Standard. 😳🤡. However I wanted to draw attention to the fact that there are folk who are celebrating the prospect of sabotage, and inference violence, because they disagree with this decision on Maori wards.
  
  As for “the New Zealand that used to be”, yes many of us would like it back. Otherwise we are on a path to some hybrid of PNG and Argentina.

    Maoris: you have to respect us, we know best about everything and are a loving culture that protects everything. You will pay us billions per year without question or improvement of any outcomes.
    
    Also maoris: if you stop the money, we will literally burn the place down.
    
    This isn’t about representation, it’s about money. Both upfront and distribution to the preferred areas.
    
    How about getting your kids to school and not killing them. Then we can talk about you having some representation and say over ratepayers money.

    let them, they are only ruining their own neighbourhood and infrastructure, they are the ones that will suffer the consequences because at the end of they day they use/need them, Just quietly pull out of the area and let it happen and be in no hurry to restore anything later.
    Same thing has happened New Cal, I work with a few New Cals here and all their family have lost their jobs, their local supermarkets, because of a few young people being stirred up by some activists over something that is unwinable basically, trashing your own town to prove a point is just craziness

      A few years back I posted a few comments in my usual polite style. IIRC I lasted about 6 comments before I got a tirade of foul mouhed abuse from some moderator, or whoever owns the blog, and was banned 😅
      
      Just an aside.. Is anyone worried that the police are being trained to go after someone who posts on social media that “there are two genders”, while a communist blog site allows posts about destroying infrastructure in Northland? Perhaps the police could contact whoever owns the blog and ask them “to tone things down”. 🙁

    Inadvertently they expose what many fear the real problem with ‘co-governance’ would be: Maori wouldn’t follow what people believe are the established rules are for a liberal democracy.
    Just for the sake of examining the argument, let’s set aside one man, one vote and just think about a 50:50 split in governing New Zealand with say 60 Maori MPs and 60 non-Maori.
    If we could rely on those MPs to represent all New Zealanders and their views and debate matters before coming to consensus then maybe it could work.
    But we know it wouldn’t because some Maori would not follow those established rules and norms of a functioning democracy. Look at the oafs in the Maori Party who have to wear a hat in Parliament or have stickers on their laptops or just accuse the government of ethnocide as the example. Maori want co-governance because they want to, in their eyes, level up all the perceived injustices of the past 200 years. And that’s why we have to push back on co-governance.
    Additionally, for the rather hysterical Maori ward councillor whose great defiance against whitey was hollering and opening up the shades – look at the number of people outside backing you. If we stick to the ‘oppressors” system you can get all of them to vote for you and you’d walk a seat on the council. You don’t need a cheap, backdoor entry into democracy. You just need compelling arguments and policies to win the backing of the electorate.

  Racism is racism. Providing one race special rights that all other races are denied is racist.
  
  NZ is at a crossroads – we either continue to develop an apartheid system whereby those who ‘identify’ as Maori get special rights; or we choose to be a liberal democracy where everyone has the same rights.
  
  If the ‘Deciders’ choose apartheid, then I will choose to identify as a Maori, why wouldn’t I? It is my choice.

    Before my time, but from what I have read, if he had become PM in 2005, New Zealand’s course may have been very different. Instead we got John Key in 2008, who essentially locked in the policies of Helen Clark, just administered much more efficiently.
    
    We are now seeing more of the same with this government. Sure they have killed off the worst aspects of the last government. However they have done nothing to change the trajectory of the country’s economic fortunes relative to other developed countries.
    
    The government should be thinking about what New Zealand will be like in 2050. The only 2050 goal the government has is energy poverty. ☹️

Oranga Tamariki scraps 337 service contracts, pulls $139m in funding, citing ‘under-delivery’

Also $22 million has been recovered from under delivery, more expected.

Minister Chhour in a statement said Oranga Tamariki had been a “cash cow” for many years and claimed a “lack of rigour” had been applied to contract management. “There has been no reduction in frontline services. Oranga Tamariki is simply funding those who do the work, and not those who don’t.”

$139 million plus the under delivery recovery – that is a massive amount sitting out there unspent in bank accounts. Not surprising there are some unhappy folk out there. Including in OT who have seen that amount of funding wasted. Nothing to do with their oversight of contracts and outcomes of course.

Those numbers should temporarily silence the voices railing at underfunding. Also some strange reporting from a service provider “At one point, He Matapuna Ora [Family Start Nelson] reported in the previous financial year that they had 17 FTE despite being contracted for 12.75.” What is that about?

      I disagree with this Mike, Government agencies are full of bureaucrats, middle managers and seat warmers who draw salaries but deliver no benefit and don’t contribute to achieving the aims of the organization. Community groups and businesses that have to either work within a budget or make a profit can’t afford to support grifters.
      I work for an IT consulting company, and we support several service providers in public health, local councils, etc. And I guarantee we provide a better service at a lower cost to our clients than if they were to employ the number of FTEs they need to do what we do. Additionally, since we have several specialist staff with 20+ years experience each (I’ve got ~30 years in my field) we have a wider pool of knowledge than a single FTE so better ability to resolve issues.
      I’ve personally pulled the buns out the oven for 2 government organizations in the past 6 months. I’m talking about fixing system used by front line providers that have been failing, in one case to the point the CEO was on the red carpet with the Minister to “please explain” before they called us in. Now we manage their whole environment.
      Additionally, we make upgrade, consolidation and performance recommendations to save them money. In one case (not government) charging roughly $30,000 to do an exercise that saved the company in the order of $150,000 per year.

  Purpose: Database (in a CRM platform) of all contracts issued to non government organisations, so on an All of Government basis officials could see which NGO held what contracts with government. To make it easier to audit for compliance and performance; to avoid duplication of spend by Agencies, duplication in regions, and for flagging NGO’s that should be used

  It may have something to do with the leaky-homes situation. Back in 2019 I got a call from ACC asking about my final building certification for a renovation we’d finished in 2009. WTF I thought? Why not ask about the renovation we finished in 2005, since it was exactly the same process on the same house?
  
  Anyway, missing one thing (electrical) I got a guy in to cover that stuff and he told me that ACC was getting done over by many cases involving leaky homes and so had decided to go back through all their files looking for legal exposure – with an arbitary cutoff date of ten years.
  
  Bingo! It all went quiet after I found a couple of small pieces of work (rubber matting?) where I didn’t have the paperwork and could not track down the subbie, and told ACC we were at a dead end.
  
  Follow up is that in early 2023 I suddenly get an email telling me that my Building Consent is being processed! Eh? Followed by another a few days later saying that it’s been declined.
  
  For work completed in 2009. I guess they stopped work during the Great Chinese Lung Rot Lockdowns.

Following on from yesterday’s blog regarding the demise of the PR company SenateSHJ it got me thinking (yes dangerous at my age) what do these companies and their people do that is actually productive. So taking the name Tracey Bridges and the info given by other KBs I did some research. I found this lady was the Chairperson of WellintonNZ. What do they do ?Funded by us the ratepayers and taxpayers.
So how many organisations like this are there around the country ?
This blog spends a lot of time criticising the Māori elite and dodgy Māori organisations. Can I suggest there is a much bigger cesspit out there which is costing the New Zealand public billions for little or no benefits which we know little about.
The swarm of similar companies like SenateSHJ
International consultancy companies all aided and abetted by the political class of all parties.
Appointments of ex politicians and hanger on’s
to government organisations. The last PM has quite rightly been castigated for her appointments, have a look at what this government has done.
Reduction in practical people in local and national government replaced by seat warmers.
Wake up New Zealand ” Drain the Swamp”
It’s never go to happen too many snouts in the trough. I feel very sorry for productive people like farmers and tradies who continually get attacked by the seat warmers. That’s my rant.

I was in what is probably Whakatane’s largest retail department store yesterday. There were four customers browsing. There were six staff waiting behind the main counter, chatting. There were other staff moving around, seemingly engaged.

Outside the carpark was 5 – 10% filled at most. It was mid afternoon. Is this typical of a small provincial town? There was very little activity all round.

Just how strong is the economy?

IMHO China will launch an attack on Taiwan in 4 years on this date. It will be the 8th day of the 8th month 2028. Remember the Beijing Games opened at 8pm on the 8th day of the 8th month of the 8th year of the new century. 8 is the Chinese lucky number and they are big into symbolism.

So the “boot camps” are being set up to fail.

No military personnel involved in the front line of the bootcamps, but they are insisting it is still based on some input from the people who run the Limited Service Volutnteers (LSV) course.

So they had a few meetings with the LSV people and thinks that ticks the box?

In my opinion, this will fail for many reasons – one of those being that limited service volunteers are volunteers. Their motivation is completely different from those that are forced to attend.

To call this “bootcamp” is an insult to anyone who has actually done any form of military basic training.

To what extent was England’s economic prosperity in the Industrial Revolution a consequence of colonialism rather than massive increases in productivity?
    
    The first YouTube video I looked at seemed promising with its tale of looted colonial resources, but when it told me the UK ‘looted’ wool and meat resources from NZ, I wondered if ‘looted’ was quite the right word.

      Good questions Dave but you can’t tease out the thread of the industrial empire and separate it from the thread of the colonial empire, each reinforced the other.
      Machines developed to make products for the Empire which were fed by raw materials from the Empire. Things develop in a step wise fashion with each step being taken because it was slightly more profitable than the last. Men were paid to develop those technologies because other men made profits from those technologies.

A back story to the TV3-Newshub cuts in NZ.

The business’s American owner, Warner Bros. Discovery, has posted a quarterly loss of nearly $US10 billion as it writes down the value of its cable networks.

The Wall Street Journal says this is a “stunning acknowledgement of how the television industry has deteriorated. Cable TV customers in particular are switching to streaming services.

The NZ arm, Discovery NZ, which runs TV3, reported a loss of $138.2 million for 2023, compared with a loss of $34.8 million in 2022. NZ advertising revenue for 2023 was $113.72 million, down from $137.11 million.

Does the Ministry of Education still collect union dues from teachers’ salaries before they are paid? If so perhaps it’s time teachers paid by automatic deductions just as the rest of the world does.
Of course it may be harder to get the money out of the m in which case unions would be able to see exactly how much they are supported.

Joe’s threat became less threatening as time went on and campaign donors went away. Moreover, his physical state became shakier, as did his mental state. Everyone could see it. Even the poodle media like WaPo and NYT, which had covered for him just months earlier, were forced to acknowledge his state and their lie.

Hmmm I’m highly skeptical.

According to this article, a chess player smeared mercury on chess pieces to poison her rival.

The rival suffered dizziness and nausea.

I call bullshit.

Mercury does not act like that. It takes a long time for mercury to poison you. You certainly would not experience dizziness and nausea from just touching some.

As kids we often harvested the mercury out of broken thermometers and would play with the stuff on our hands for hours on end. No dizziness. No nausea.

Nor can you really smear anything with mercury. It has very high surface tension and doesn’t really stick to anything easily. Therefore, whatever you can do with it, “smearing” is probably not the word you are looking for.

Could mercury poison an opponent? Sure, possibly, but it would take a long time for the person to show any symptoms.

This suggests to me that whaever was involved was not mercury. There are substances which look a bit like mercury which would cause a fast reaction, but mercury itself wouldn’t.

So what is the core problem that politicians think they are trying to solve?

People getting drunk?

It occurs to me that all these restrictions, heavy taxation, heavy regulation should be removed.

Let Darwinism sort out the problem (people drink themselves to death) and remove “”I was drunk”” as any defence. In fact, being drunk should add 50% to any court imposed penalty.

Also reinstate drunk in a public place mandatory 48 hours in the drunk tank.

Also in that category, ie No excuse, “”my parents were alcoholics””

  As the son of an alcoholic, I can assure people that restricting alcohol sales has zero impact on alcoholics.
  
  Alcoholics design their lives around access to alcohol. Restrictions are no impediment.
  
  If they only sold booze from one shop on the second Tuesday every month, every alcoholic would be there to get what they need.
  
  Any tighter than that and they’d all just brew their own (if they are not doing so already).
  
  All restrictions do is limit the casual consumers.

    Totally agree. A while back I saw some interesting data about Australian alcohol consumption. (I can’t find the link on a quick browse.)
    
    It was something like:
    – 20 percent of folk drink no alcohol.
    – 30 percent average one to three drinks per week
    – 40 percent are in the range of four up to about 30 drinks per week.
    
    .. but the final 10 percent of drinkers are drinking 100+ drinks per week.
    
    I would not expect New Zealand drinking patterns to be much different to Australia.
    
    Those last 10 percent of drinkers will move heaven and earth to obtain alcohol. The idea that these folk will curb their drinking because the supermarket stops selling wine at 6pm is insane.
    
    So all you are going to do is inconvenience the moderate drinkers.

I don’t have an issue with it Maggie. Say, for example, a Sikh – why should he be compelled to take an oath on the bible or another form of scripture not his own – it would be meaningless to him. But on his own holy book – no problem. Likewise, a Muslim for the Quran.

I have become somewhat concerned that the Karioi pulp plant near Ohakune and the Pan Pac plant near the mouth of the Esk River have both stopped work because of the inadequate supply of reasonably priced electricity.
Then I recalled that Fonterra had recently converted their wholemilk powder plant at Waitoa to electricity recently.
I think this might be another of Fonterra’s innumerable foul ups.

Observations from the Polkinghorne trial:

So project director for the Manukau covid response vax rollout, a covid era which saw NZ go full authoritarian, justified on germ phobia, had us social distancing and banning the unvaccinated from all society and washing our groceries for fear of germs was participating in sex parties in Australia with 6 or 7 people and prostitutes. Hmm what is the germ risk from an unvaccinated person in a cafe vs sex parties with strangers?

And so when checkign what the title of her role was on linkedin, it only shows her current health role but no prior experience listed or degrees. Did she really have no prior experience? Or is it just not listed. Or was she given a top management job with control of $200mill of government money with no experience?

Finally, many working class jobs require drug testing for safety. Want to drive a forklift or put up scaffolding you might need a drug test. But if you want to be an eye surgeon you can be methed up to the eyeballs and no one checks?

  From what I’ve seen it was the accused Polkinghorne who was the meth head sex fiend and it was the deceased Hanna who was in charge of the Manukau covid response.
  I know a lot of people are still very angry about what went down during covid, and not without cause but I don’t see how the two situations are linked.
  And yes, jobs do go to the affluent and socially connected even if they don’t have qualifications or experience. Jobs go to those who show up and if you show up and have friends in the right places it goes even smoother. We didn’t need a Remuera murder trial to tell us that.

Has anyone listened to the taped recording of the eye surgeons wife telling her family about the emotional abuse she is suffering at the hands of her husband but she won’t leave him as ‘she loves him’. Looks like a severe case of Stockholm syndrome.

Just shows abuse can be largely emotional in an abusive relationship, although there is clearly physical abuse there as well. Thank goodness this recording exists or it would be all about ‘our marriage was perfect’ from Polkinghorne and no one would know any differently. It’s awful that his wife put up with it and didn’t boot him into touch before she came to harm.
