  There are reports about cats as well on the internet from residents so that could be true as well?
  
  But the bigger problem is that this town of 65,000 people has been sent 20,000 Haitian illegal immigrants. It’s upsetting the locals. The illegals are everywhere. Strangers who don’t know local customs are taking over the town.
  
  This would upset most people. And rightly so. And this is happening everywhere because the US Southern border is wide open. And that’s on Biden and Harris.

    It’s a genius tactic from Trump. Hundreds of shitlib regime journos will leave their DC and Brooklyn apartments and fly to Springfield and run around with their hair on fire screaming “TRUMP IS LYING AGAIN” trying to find people who have never seen a single Haitian eating cats and dogs. The regime media will disgrace themselves as usual. They’ll accuse the local African-Americans of being racist against the Haitians and then start talking abut the noble tradition of eating cat. They’ll tell us how normal it is to go to your local park and say “Great, this town provides us free food” and behead a duck and take it home to put in the pot for dinner. More normal people will watch or read the regime media for the last time and switch to other providers of news.
    
    Meanwhile we all get to find about about the illegal immigration disaster, the driving accidents, the effect on the locals in Anytown, USA or Big City, USA, and we all get to wonder why the Border Czar – whoever she is – allows this to occur. Illegal immigration (and not just in the four border states) is a huge loser for Democrats and, once again, it is front and centre.

    I heard an Ohio professor interviewed yesterday by Michael Laws. He was adamant that the Haitian immigrants were there on specific work visas, therefore not illegal. Of course that doesn’t mean that they aren’t eating cats and dogs. Different cultures have different tastes/morals etc. Go to South Auckland and witness Tongans eating dogs. Its a thing.

    I think there are at least two huge factors at play:
    * The system (or as it is often called “the swamp”) really decides. The voting is only a small part of it.
    * The good candidates – who would change the system and set USA on a course away from the debt disaster they face – would not get selected.
    * The good candidates are employed elsewhere in society running businesses etc. They are better employed there than in the White House.

        The numbers of folk who are somewhat proficient in the Maori language are increasing. However, anecdotally much of that increase would be in State sector employees. Resistance is career damaging, and has become more so since the change of government, which I suspect is counter-intuitive for many.

        Yes it’s interesting that people think we can replace English with Maori as our main language and that would all be good.
        
        Maori had originally about 800 words. Now it appears we can use a Maori word for the internet (ipurangi). Now that’s not a made up word, it means source, like source of a stream. The word has been repurposed.
        
        But given the basic nature of the tribal culture to adapt the language for 21st century use is a huge task. And given we already have English it makes little sense in my opinion.

She is an icon to millions; somewhere around 30% of Americans consider themselves fans. Or are you talking about her relationship breakups, a source for many of her songs?   The tragedy of the debate was that Harris’s handlers knew she could lie and exaggerate with impunity because Trump is not a clever debater and would mishandle the opportunity to catch her out.
  
  It is useless blaming the moderators – we all knew they would protect Harris – but we also hoped Trump would make better use of the gifts she threw him.

And debating takes another level of skill again because it requires you to think about what the other person has said and formulate a reasoned response.     I am interested in the downtickers thinking. I would vote for Trump in a heartbeat even though I dislike some of his personal attributes. I believe Harris is a total fraud, a lightweight who couldnt run a decent fox party in a henhouse.
    
    But I would have thought it was pretty obvious that Trump failed to pick up adequately on many of her 20 odd lies, and misuse of information. The purpose of any debate is to put forward your own points but to also undermine your opposition. He simply didnt connect at the level he might have and should have.

    We were there for Thanksgiving with family a few years ago and did the Christmas shopping starting at midnight before Black Friday. It was really fun (although I’m glad I wasn’t driving!) I’m told that since covid it has become way less of a thing and stores have cut back on opening hours. At least in the area we visited anyway.

  The ill fated moon mission Apollo 13 was launched on a Friday. IIRC some blamed the “Friday” and the “13” on the near fatal outcome.
  
  Just an aside – Apollo 11 gets all the attention for being the first moon mission. Then Apollo 13 for the drama. However Apollos 15, 16, and 17 were by far the most interesting of the missions.
  
  BTW for those of us still around in September 2026, we can look forward to another moon landing of 4 astronauts with Artemis 3.

    Bene: More than 50 years on, I still marvel that the Yanks landed two men on the moon in July 1969. I read recently that while NASA were 90% sure they could get them to land safely, they only rated at 50/50 the chances they could get them off again. I assume the astronauts must have known that.
    
    I can still reember as a boy of 12 watching, on poorly focused black and white TV for what seemed like an hour – but was probably 15 minutes – as Armstrong slowly desecended the ladder one rung at a time before he stepped onto the moon’s surface and uttered that world famous line, which has to be the most familar quote ever, for those of us alive and sentient at the time.
    
    As an aside, I remember seeing an interview with Armstrong – one of the very few he gave in his later years – when he said the line wasn’t given to him – just thought it up at the time. Fucking amazing.

      That may be correct but I have my doubts. IIRC the ascent from the moon was tested on Apollo 10 and it worked flawlessly. If the chances of failure were 50 percent on each mission, inevitably one of the six missions would have been left on the moon.
      
      On Apollo 11, the near disaster occurred on landing. IIRC the lunar landing was heading for a crater. Neil Armstrong took control of the craft and managed to land it safely with only seconds of fuel remaining.
      
      Arguably the most dangerous mission was Apollo 8, which remains to this day the furthest that astronauts have ever travelled from earth. It was also the first time that men had been launched on the Saturn V rocket.

        Yes it is a very good series. It is based on an “alternative history”:
        
        – the USSR beats the USA to the moon. (The USSR did have a moon program. However the giant N1 rocket failed, and the progam director died.) In the alternative history, the program succeeded.
        
        – The “space race” never ended with the United States and the USSR each establishing bases on the moon.
        
        – The USSR did not collapse in 1991. Both the USSR and the USA launched missions to Mars by the end of the 2oth century.

        Bene: Crucially Apollo 10 didn’t land… it got down to 8 miles above the lunar surface before ascending back into orbit to dock with the Command Module. Unlike Apollo 11, at no point was the lunar lander’s engine shut off – that was the crucial difference between 10 and 11.
        
        Apollo 11 two months later was not only the first landing, but the first time the rocket engine on the LSM had to be fired up from “cold”. Had the engine not lit up, there was no plan B, and no possibility of rescue.
        
        I don’t know why you think Apollo 8 was “the most dangerous” NASA had orbited the moon in an unmanned vehicle before – several times IIRC – the only difference on Apollo 8 was that it was a manned mission.

        As everyone here knows my maths are crap, but this is totally incorrect: on every toss of a coin, there is a 50% chance of the it coming up heads. That does not preclude it coming up heads six times in a row.(There were six missions which actually landed)
        
        Also, because the first mission to land only had a 50% chance of getting off again, that doesn’t mean that each of the subsequent five missions had the same chance of failure. They learned things each of the six times that reduced the risk of the subsequent mission(s).

As they can only conceive of courts operating in partisan fashion, their usual habit of psychological projection compels them to regard any court not openly biased in their favor as illegitimate.

  I’m trying to test how I might feel or spontaneously react by imagining if there was a monkeypox outbreak anywhere else such as any party conference or for example a Sally’s Army or Islamic or Catholic event or in a govt agency. My reaction to imagining all the above scenarios is tainted because all I can think of is that consenting sex was involved because of the strong link between monkeypox and sex.

I always find that most interviews with Eric Weinstein are interesting and get you thinking about stuff. Eric is a brainbox with an extremely high IQ (I forget what it actually is but he’s up there with Einstein etc).

This one is a bit long, but the discussion near the start talks about the dangers of having Biden remain as President over the next few months. ‘Imagine having to wake him at say 2am with the nuclear football and tell him he has 6-7 minutes to decide on keying in the codes….’ Weinstein has previously said that the mathematics required for a successful ‘multi-player game theory nuclear situation’ is beyond human calculation – let alone a demented 81-year-old under immense time pressure.

The demented Biden is meeting with the equally stupid Starmer tonight NZ time to most likely agree on giving Zelensky full use of NATO long-range missiles into Russia (Moscow etc). Of course, he will need the NATO military to actually fire off these things, using NATO satellites and guidance systems, etc (Ukraine doesn’t have the systems to do this themselves).

Meanwhile, Putin has just announced that if NATO fires long-range missiles into Russia that means Russia is at war with NATO (obviously).

  The great toad Putin has been rolling out the ‘red-line’ mantra for several years. But nothing ever eventuates as he slowly boils in the Ukraine cauldron.
  
  Note that Ukraine recently invaded Russian Kursk (interestingly the area of the biggest battle in history with 2 million combatants and 10,000 tanks during WW2 – making western front a side-show) taking 1200km², and another 700km² south of the Siem river in imminent jeopardy. Embarrassed Putin, commander of second best army in Kursk, has been mostly pretending it wasn’t happening.
  
  I’d say that with Russia importing oodles of North Korean and Iranian cruise and ballistic missiles to use on Ukrainian civilians (hospitals, schools, shopping centers and apartment blocks etc), with particularly appalling ‘double-tap’ strikes where they hit a target then do it again 30 minutes later to kill the first responders. That turn about is fair play. Putin can go fuck himself.

        Because it will have been communicated to Putin and his oligarchs via backchannels that they and their families will be in center of crosshairs if there is any nuclear escalation.
        
        Highly urbanised Russian population, poor as hell and all extremely dependent upon electricty, gas and other infrastructure to provide bare-essentials of life will all die of starvation within a few months if there is any nuclear conflict – it is true suicide for Russian population and leadership.
        
        Wealthier US population with far better infrastructure and climate, and far more spread out across their country will be far more resiliant, and with proven capable Patriot missile defenses (about 500 launchers in US and similar number more world wide) have high chance of survival outside of perhaps some metropolitan targets. And Russian ICBMs and warheads will be extremely unreliable after 3 decades of poor upkeep by corrupt leadership – Ukraine has demonstrated how crappy their residual soviet equipment is, their navy is pure garbage, their sat reconnaissance is practically non-existent, and US sub fleet can likely wipe USSR nuke threat out within 5-10 minutes, without significant riposte.
        
        Putin has little more than nuclear sabre-rattling on his side and collapsing military capability – not enough to even do a May-Day parade anymore

        America is more urbanised than Russia and has done far, far less to provide the survivability of its population. Unlike the United States the Soviet Union always regarded nuclear war as winnable even without a successful decapitation strike being achieved, and made extensive preparations to preserve as much of its population as possible and even keep war industries running following a nuclear attack. The federation inherited and built on what the communists left behind.
        
        As for the relative state of the nuclear forces, they are the one Russian service branch that continued to be funded and upgraded during the chaos in the 1990s and just recently underwent another wave of expansion, upgrades and provision of new systems.

    sirk: I find it intensely irritaing that the word “racist” is tossed around like confetti used to be these days, often by people who have no real understanding of what the word actually means.
    
    Any half decent dictionary will define a “racist” as a person who regards people as being inferior or superior to another or others solely on the grounds of their race. It’s as simple as that.
    
    Thus to point out that “Maori are overrepresented in prison” is a simple statement of fact; it cannot by definition be “racist” to say so. It is also a simple statement of fact – and not racist – to say “Young Maori males are more likely to be criminals than young males of another ethnicity”. But by the same token, if you aded to that sentence”….because Maoris would rather steal things than work”. That statement is absolutely racist.
    
    But in an era when we have judges – even High Court judges – who think that “Muslim” is a race and not a religion, or more accurately a code for living, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised.

If was a fairly bland Ministerial response this week on ACC plans to raise its levies.

Jenée Tibshraeny reports in the Herald that the Minister for ACC, Matt Doocey, said, in part:

“..it is my expectation ACC will better use injury prevention as a lever to improve its performance.”

ACC began as a great scheme. Courts were jammed for months or years as lawyers, insurance companies, and the injured or relatives of the dead battled for compensation.

But the scheme has slowly been widened and distorted.

A minor example: motorbike levies were lowered under the cost of motorbike damage after a campaign that featured a prominent New Zealander.

Another example: ACC compensation was extended to sexual abuse victims. They might deserve help – but from motorists, industries, and workers?

And another example: Compensation seems now to encompass mental damage like, this, which is taken from the ACC web site:

Sudden traumatic events at work – A mental condition is covered if it’s the result of an event at work that you saw or heard directly and that could reasonably be expected to cause you mental harm – for example if the bank you work in is robbed, or if you’re a train driver and you unavoidably run over and kill someone lying on the train tracks.

These events are rare enough to be reasonable costs for employers to bear.

Yet another example, the publicity campaign that overturned a compensation rejection. The campaign was waged in the media, and was eventually led by an Aucklander with Government connections.

Minister Doocey says he expects ACC to “better use injury prevention” to improve performance.

It will take a lot more than that.

  I own a motorbike. The levy is quite enormous. I’ve seen the stats, and I’ll take their word for it that costs for injuries that involve a motorbike exceed the levies gather from motorcyclists. Though it’s be interesting to find out how many incidents involving motorcycle were because the motorcyclist was at fault.
  
  I wonder why there aren’t specific levies on sports clubs, particularly rugby, rugby league, and soccer, given the number of injuries that come out of those activities. Might just be broken bones, sprains, strains and concussions, but the quantity of those mean the costs add up.

The UK government are doing such a bang up job of knackering the place in an effort to tackle “Climate Change!” (e.g. freezing the pensioners while sending £billions to Africa to fight “Climate Change!”, massive costs on dealers who sell too many ICE cars, inflicting even more unreliable electricity on the grid at enormous cost, steel manufacturing shutting down because of energy costs), that I reckon the next party to boot Labour out in a few years time will do so with a policy of dumping ‘Net Zero’.
I could be wrong (it’s happened before), but I’ll be amazed and horrified if the voters keep voting for more of the insanity.

All the subsidies did were to further enrich a bunch of early adopter rich folk who added the EV purchase onto the mortgage of their Adrian Orr value inflated Kandallah or Cashmere house. Now the subsidies have ended, the EV market has all but collapsed in New Zealand.
    
    Yet this shockingly bad public policy was defended by many on the “left”, Julie Anne Genter and Wayne Mapp being prime examples. What a great idea – transfer wealth from poor people and the productive sector to public servants living in $3 million houses in Wellington. And yes it was that simple.

      I don’t think it was the removal of subsidies that caused the collapse. Rather, the removal of the subsidies and the downturn in EV sales just happened at the same time.
      
      Rather:
      * There was no real substantial EV market – with or without the subsidies.
      * The subsidies did prompt those who wanted EVs to act sooner to take advantage of the subsidies.
      * Once people who wanted EVs had bought them, the market was saturated.
      
      There was a once-off blip. That blip is mainly over.
      
      If it really was due to the subsidies and the price then EV sales would be higher now than 18 months ago, because EV prices have dropped.
      
      eg. VW ID4 was $79k. After the clean air discount it would have been around $70k (IIRC). Now it is priced at $55k. That is almost 30% cheaper than with the subsidy.
      Sales have not continued to increase.
      
      Did the subsidies “work”? Well yes they did trigger the irrational fear of missing out behaviour. This was really extra cash into the pockets of car sales rather than actually helping out the customers.

        They’re not happy because they’re being squeezed out of the Chinese car market. Nearly 60% of new cars sold in China are now either EV’s or plug-in hybrids, all the profits that European car manufacturers used to make selling ICE vehicles in the world’s largest car market are disappearing quickly. Any legacy auto maker with high debt levels are going to have problems servicing that debt over the next few years without major downsizing or restructuring (see VW). They’re certainly not going to be able to solve their problems by competing with Chinese EV manufacturers.
