Like rust, the elite blob never sleeps. Though they may be working from home, they are constantly dreaming up new ways to impoverish the West and benefit themselves.
The latest scheme is to tax the fuel use for all international shipping.

Of course, they give an illusory out. Low carbon emitting fuel. Back to sail? Maybe the are promoting a resurgence of nuclear powered freighters like the Savannah? Or should we just bulldoze more forests to grow palm oil? How about they just plant the forest they destroyed for the latest Climate Conference gabfest in soybeans. And with this pretend “agreement” (USA wasn’t there so it’s meaningless), what’s the bet that aircraft carbon taxes are next?
At least NZ abstained so maybe a backbone is starting to form. It would be a tax on everything we trade in. And it would not be spent in NZ – but go to keeping the rich people in poor countries in the lifestyle they have become accustomed.
Many of the Pacific Islands also abstained, but that was because they didn’t think they would get enough money out of it! They can’t fix all their climate change damage -yeah right. Be careful what you wish for. Their shipping is invariably running at a loss. Maybe just stop all freighters bring in their goods?

  I’m not sure whether the person who wrote these words really understands the magnitude of the quantities of fuel required.
  A typical reefer ship used in the NZ kiwi fruit export trade (about 12000 DWT) will use about 40-50 tonnes of fuel per 24 hours at its rated speed – say 17 knots.
  Zespri chartered 64 reefer vessels for the 2024 kiwi fruit season alone.Where is all this “blended cooking oil” going to come from?

    Yes everybody is “trialing”, and they are all using the same waste cooking oil, fats and tallow methods. Apparently there is an inexhaustible supply of it //s
    
    This same source of fuel will also decarbonise aviation, the land fleet, and provide for industrial heat in our factories. It is truly a miracle product.
    
    Or, it will fail. Again. The Americans will subsidise corn for ethanol some more, and the Indonesians and Brazilians will cut down the remaining rainforests – all to “save” the planet with “low-carbon” feedstocks.
    
    But the UN will get lots of lovely money to “explain” why the loss of income is good for us, and to suppress “deniers”.

      Depends. Most of the offshore vessels run on AGO or MGO (Gas Oil), which is the same stuff as what Diesel cars are running on.
      The alternative is VLSFO (Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil), the stuff with less than 0.5% of sulphur content by weight. These are blends of various composition of HFO and MGO and some of them are prone to sludging.
      Occasionally, one may see big clouds of white “smoke” coming out of ship’s funnels. This is just a steam created in fuel scrubbers, which are used to clean the exhaust in the marine engines using Heavy Fuel Oil.

      Container shipping is just a part of the global shipping industry. Its fuel consumption is probably only about 1/3 of the total marine fuel consumption, which also includes bulk carriers, tankers and all other tonnage.
      
      Cooking oil, as its name indicates, is intended primarily for culinary applications and not for burning in engines. Apart from the logistic factors (the medium sized container vessel of approx. 8000 TEU will use about 300 tonnes per day), these oils are very prone to oxidation and microbiological contamination. And believe me, you wouldn’t want to deal with a couple of hundred tonnes of fuel so affected, let alone with a few thousand tonnes.

        The scientific consensus was the sun and planets orbited earth. Against that cinsensus Copernicus and Galileo proved this incorrect. Kepler proved planetary orbits were eliptical contrary to his contemporary scientific consensus they were circular. Mid 20th century eugenics was the way to a perfect society, anotherconsensus. IPCC said 97 per cent of scientific studies support man-made global warming. The figure arose from a survey of scientific papers 66% of which took no position. Of the remaining 34%, 33% supported a weak human contribution to global warming. 33 divided by 34 gets you 97%. The 33% included papers that actually critique key elements of the IPCC position. There isn’t even consensus on the consensus. The work of science has nothing to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics.

      It is possible that human emissions contribute to some global warming, but it is far less of a worry than other natural disasters. We could have a volcano in Auckland.

  It will have the effect of removing production in far away countries eg China and move it to eg USA.
  It is a tax on all imported product, but the money goes to corrupt third world dictators.
  If only the US could think of a way to tax all imported goods from China but retain the money raised to avoid the inflationary impact.

  NZ is already signed up, and has enforcement provisions passed in the Civil Aviation Act 2024.

Media report that the Government has reduced its threat assessment regarding climate change.

2023: Defence Policy and Strategy Statement listed climate change as one of two main threats, along with strategic competition. It also went into detail about specific challenges and threats from climate change. Climate change was mentioned 24 times.

2025: Defence Capability Plan said New Zealand was facing the most challenging and dangerous strategic environment in decades.
The 45-page plan mentioned climate change twice inside a single paragraph, both times in reference to the Pacific Islands.

Praise the Lord! A sensible approach. As Canute demonstrated so colourfully man – kings even – cannot hold nature back. Let’s clean up the planet but let’s do it with half a brain and no bullet holes in our feet. Defence needs a civil emergency capacity but that’s not its main job by a long shot.

      pdm very possibly. When Ron Mark was Minster of Defence there was some reasonable investment but not much since then.
      When I was a terrritorial in the early 80s a lot of our gear dated back to the Vietnam war….
      Bedford trucks from god knows when, Land Rovers not much younger and rifles from the 50s and 60s.
      They introduced Unimogs and new V8 Land Rovers during my time but not much else.

  A half tick from me. What falls under the banner of ‘Climate Change’ is broad and often only loosely related to the term. For example, floods drowning the Pakistan plains have been described as evidence for climate change. Omitted from the story is that the population of Pakistan has gone from circa 20m at Partition to 100m today; and that these people have to live somewhere so they build on flood plains that previous generations did not. Add deforestation in the Himalayas and the seasonal rains, and there you go.
  
  But, make no mistake, some of these people will be on the move. Ditto some of the 50m in the Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna delta of Bangladesh who live within 5m of the high tide mark.
  
  There are a lot of people who see NZ with envious eyes, for our (perceived) under population, with a lower climate change impact prediction, away from the dictators of the world etc.
  
  So, while climate change is not in & of itself a threat to NZ that NZDF need to plans for, the fallout from climate change events absolutely needs to be factored into political thinking.

  It’s population overshoot. For example it’s to the extent for some that if you want to build a house, you have to put it on stilts over the lagoon.

Reading Michael Bassett’s latest article on Bassett Brash and Hide, reminded me of the tactic I use when people say “The government should pay for it”. My immediate response is “You mean I should pay for it as it is my taxes that the government uses. Therefore you want me to pay for it?”

This usually goes over their heads until you sit them down and explain to them how government funding works. This hasn’t been explained to the Greens yet.

Scientists claim they have discovered a new colour.

A team at the University of California, in Berkeley, had laser pulses fired into their eyes, enabling them to experience a colour no one had seen before.

The five people who have seen the colour described it as “blue-green”, but said that did not capture the full richness of the experience.

Researchers shared an image of a turquoise square they said best matched the new colour, which they named Olo, but added that the colour could only be experienced through laser manipulation.

So if you fire a laser into people’s eyes they see a new colour. Allegedly.

Whoop de do. You could use that research money to cure cancer but no, we aren’t a smart enough species for that.

  More accurately, scientists have made eyes respond to light in a new way because we already know the electromagnetic spectrum exists. Presumably this might have implications for studying / curing some types of blindness. That’s at least as valid as “curing cancer*”.

    The eyeball blocks certain frequencies from reaching the retina which WOULD be able to detect them if that wasn’t so. I suspect that they are flooding the eyes with a laser set to these usually unseen frequencies. I’d be worried about heating up the eyeball, but I presume they’ve done the maths on that. I don’t think that would result in new colours as such. It is still the same set of rods and cones being triggered after all.
    
    However around 3% of women are “tetrachromal”, with four different colour receptors instead of three. In theory these people really can see colours the rest of us cannot see, although it is unclear how well the brain can process this extra information. There are two slightly different types of cones and women can get the genes for both types on their X chromosomes. Men only get the genes for one because we have only one X chromosome.
    
    The genes for colour vision are carried on the X chromosome, which is why men are more likely to be colourblind than women. Men only get one chance at having good genes for colour vision. Women get two rolls of the dice.

  As it is rooted in hard physics, this colour research could well end up as something useful. Lots of what we enjoy today has arisen out of theoretical research from which the scientists had little idea of what practical benefits would accrue.

as I read about NZ highly paid doctors going on strike for even higher wages,now that HNZ nurses got their pay hikes last year, one has to consider what,if any,productivity or quality improvements are happening at the same time?

  I would prefer politicians stay right away religion. It should have nothing to do with government and we have too much of its interference already.
  As an example, why should I be restricted in what I do because of a Christian belief that someone came back from the dead? Why should I be restricted in what I can do because some Maori believe (the don’t really, do they) that mountains, rivers, forests and the sea have some sort of anthropomorphic soul?

  While I think I get your point, I would suggest that the IDF has a major problem in that Hamas does hide in ambulances and does disguise themselves as civilians and refuses to wear uniforms and embeds themselves within hospitals and homes.
  
  So if the IDF makes a mistake and kills innocent civilians that is a mistake and not deliberate.
  
  Amd the contrast you point to is quite right. The IDF makes a mistake when it kills civilians. Hamas is not making a mistake when they kill civilians. It’s what they set out to do on October 7th and what they have pledged to do again and again if given the opportunity.

Apparently it had a long history of abusing taxpayer dollars, and had become infiltrated with woke ideology, including climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. And despite the screams of indignation the WH has said the agency will receive an operational reset but will remain in existence.
    
    I like what someone noted, that the louder the cries, it indicates that the DOGE team are right on track.

Only one small area (Goldies Bush) is DOC the majority is nothing to do with DOC. But through this DOC/Council joint committee they will grant a small iwi of 300 people 50% of the vote. The iwis settlement makes it clear that they mostly don’t live in this area now, they live in Northcote and Mangere and in fact were already given Ihauamato in south auckland, above and beyond their settlement too.

With all local reserves and roads coming under the jurisdiction of this joint committe of unelected non-residents and govt bureaucrats we now enter a quasi ethnic feudalist land control where the peasants make requests for the good graces of people with distant family links.

Even those family links have no public or documentation and the spokespeople are not necessarily from that iwi.

So the question is does the Waitangi Tribunal full and final settlements a judicial ruling have any meaning. Was it only to repair wrongdoing and grant restitution to iwi or was it also to create a balance of rights and a limit that also provided certainty and fairness to other NZ citizens.

This has to be a blatant scam, the second you miss an insurance payment interested parties are notified. If they aren’t then the bank can still claim losses from the insurer. So what is the real story here? Sob story for the public or debt actually for a different property?
