Regarding Anzac day, yesterday I saw a video with this headline:

“Neo Nazi boos condemned at Melbourne Anzac day dawn service, ABC News.”

Intrigued I had a quick look and the reporter said there were boos at the dawn service and a man with neo Nazi ties was escorted out. It seemed very disturbing to me. The rise of neo Nazis at the Anzac day service!

However, like many of us, I’ve learned never to trust the mainstream media and so I checked further and found this video. Now it’s from the Guardian, hardly an unbiased source but what they did have was the footage of what led up to the boos:

So here we have an aboriginal fellow speaking, welcoming people to his land, the land of his ancestors, as if his tribe was still running the show and everyone else was a visitor. Judge for yourself but I thought his words and his tone were deliberately provocative and the booing that ensued was the spontaneous response from some members of the public who were irate at his naked condescension.

But apparently those who think differently from ABC news on the subject of race relations can safely be described as neo Nazis?

The idea that this spontaneous response was some kind of neo Nazi demonstration is just partisan piffle.

Fortunately the Daily Mail gives us the other side of the story –

    I’m on the fence here.
    
    I fully appreciate the position of not making disturbances at ANZAC ceremonies.
    
    The flip side is that these should not be used for politicking either. So how should that be addressed?
    
    One has a choice:
    * Either respond to the politicking immediately.
    – or –
    * Let it slide and write a pointless letter to the editor the next day.
    
    Personally I think I might come down on the side of immediate action and give the person doing politicking instant feedback not to do so.

      I watched video footage of the “welcome to country”. Aside from the inappropriateness of having it at an ANZAC service – how on earth is it relevant? – I noted that the speaker never once mentioned the ANZACs. Small wonder a part of the audience reacted to it. Interesting that the speaker gave his address in English. No facility with his native language, maybe?
      
      I have family in Australia. My late eldest
      sibling took exception to the fact that NZers weren’t mentioned in Australian ceremonies, as if there’d been collective amnesia about what “NZ” in ANZAC actually stands for.
      
      In the past, I’ve noticed that many Australians are more likely to be direct, and say what they think, in such situations. I don’t think an equivalent thing would happen here.
      
      Again, it’s so-called bleeding heart liberals, in government and government agencies, who agree to this sort of thing being interpolated into ceremonies. It seems to me that they do it because they’re deathly scared of having the “racist!” epithet flung at them. Being accused of it is the great squelcher of debate and free speech, I’ve noticed.
      
      Any NZers who think that Oz hasn’t gone as far down the path of indigenous activism as has this country, you haven’t been there lately.

      These gatherings are meant to honour those who have gone before and the huge sacrifices they made.
      The celebrations should be specific to them.
      Anzac Day is not a venue for todays entitled beneficiaries of that sacrifice to express whatever political beliefs they may have! (on both sides)
      Those attending should just forget themselves and honour past sacrifices.

  The protestors weren’t booing ANZAC Day.
  They were protesting the almost universal of every event, every meeting, every sports event, and every QANTAS flight starts with a ‘Welcome to country’
  They were sick of this woke obsession. ANZAC Day is a recognition of these who fought and died for our countries, not an apology for events in the dim past that had nothing to do with Gallipoli or international war.
  In much the same way as some in New Zealand are sick of Maori Hakas at every wedding, every funeral, many sports events, and even in Parliament.

    Exactly so. I watched that “welcome to country ” speech. I struggled to see the relevance of it to the morning’s proceedings. He didn’t once mention the ANZACs, even though they were supposed to be the focus.
    
    But of course MSM reporting makes it all about “racism”: note the RNZ piece downthread. Apparently, reporters – at least in this part of the world – cannot write a more nuanced piece.

  I remembered the other day Tariana Turia getting upset about seeing footage of Jacinda Ardern doing a Nazi Salute from her infamous speeches in Eastern Europe. The media piled in against Tariana while making sure the footage of JA didn’t appear in their reports. When Tariana died the media bestowed on her great Mana while forgetting their own reaction when she criticised Ardern.

The Melbourne ANZAC service was marred by booing during the Welcome to the Country part of the service.

The booing has been condemned, rightly, by all sides of politics – protests are inappropriate at ANZAC – but a question has to be asked: why have a Welcome at an ANZAC service? Oz seems to be going NZ’s way with this constant acknowledgment – reminder – that most of us are the descendants of immigrants. In our case, even the indigenous are the descendants of recent immigrants.

Seems to me that Welcome to the Country should stand on its own. Maybe Oz should have a Welcome Day all to itself. Leave ANZAC alone.

      MCos (9.39 post) seems to hint the 2020 RSL decision in West Australia would have ruled out performing the NZ anthem in Maori.
      
      To talk about NZ’s national anthems, we should start at the beginning.
      
      “God Defend New Zealand” was written as a poem in the 1870s by Irish-born, Victorian-raised immigrant Thomas Bracken, of Dunedin.
      
      NZ’s State National Encyclopedia says the poem was first published in the Dunedin newspaper Saturday Advertiser which Bracken edited, with an announcement of a 10 guineas prizes for composing the best tune to accompany it. This was won by John Joseph Woods, head teacher of a Catholic school at the Otago gold town of Lawrence.
      
      In 1878 in Lawrence, the Premier, Sir George Grey (now hardly a beloved of Maori separatists), was entertained by school pupils performing what was now a song.
      
      Grey asked for a translation into Maori. This was done by Thomas Henry Smith, a former Native Land Court judge. Smith’s association with the Native Land Court is unlikely to endear him to current separatists.
      
      English or Maori, the national anthem’s origin is colonial.

I see that in yesterday’s GD we were invited to snigger, or shudder, at the thought of Kamala Harris as Commander-in-Chief of the US armed forces.

Why, exactly?

Certainly, she has no military experience herself. But that’s been true of many Presidents. It’s also true of the current incumbent.

Most Presidents have also not been trained doctors, or environmental scientists, or economists, or farmers. There’s been a few who didn’t even have legal training. But expertise in all these areas, and more, is required to run a successful administration.

So what a competent President does, is what all competent leaders do. They appoint people who do have expertise in these areas, and they listen to them.

So, Kamala Harris as C-in-C.

Do we think she would have appointed as Defence Secretary, somebody less qualified and less competent than President Trump’s choice?

No disrespect Chuck Bird, but I couldn’t care less what our PM thinks about trans politics.
Trans activists present (to me) as a very small section of society desperate for something that elevates them into a special group which we must all accept and take note of.
It may seem strange for some perhaps, but this is not a topic of conversation amongst the people I mix with.
I am acquainted with a man in his sixties who is now a trans woman.
She doesn’t go on about trans rights as needing to be politically noteworthy.
She is just getting on with her new life and seems happy.

        I had a relative, now deceased, who was what used to be called a “cross dresser”.
        From time to time, he liked to dress up in women’s clothes and go out in public – sometimes with his wife accompanying him. It gave him some sort of thrill, I guess – tricking people into thinking he was a woman.
        He wasn’t trans though. He didn’t want his sex changed. He never said he wasn’t male – as far as I know.
        My acquaintance who has transitioned into a woman says he knew from a young age he was meant to be female. It took him 60 years to accomplish that.
        Is he/she really just a cross dresser then?

I only know that he is a bloke bc I was informed by a friend although he is very unfeminine and maybe we should have picked it. I was talking to three local policemen at our ANZAC function. We were talking about the recent murder of the American student at Meadowbank. They said the police knew who it was and that he had been before the courts on hundreds of occasions and the judges had had ample opportunities to lock him up.

Another life lost because of our weak judiciary.

    DPF: I think context is everything.
    
    Yes, there are hard-core crims who have criminality baked in by age 15 and are only going to stop when they push up daisies.
    
    But on the flip side there are also people committing stupid acts as part of the exuberance of youth. I think it would be reasonable to give these people some leniency for those.
    
    I certainly am not suggesting that 18 year olds should be given wiggle room for thuggery, violence, major burglary etc but there certainly is some room to give a chance/warning for minor criminal acts (minor fighting, drunk in public, stealing garden gnomes for the student pub,…)

      cmm: I am not suggesting for a moment that teenagers should be held liable for absolutely everything – or even that there shouldn’t be a Youth Court. My own son – now a father of two, and doing a fine job for such a young man – received the benefit of lenient treatment in the Youth Court for youthful foolishness not involving violence.
      
      What I am saying is that if you are committing serious violent acts at age 15 or 16, it is already too late in the vast majority of cases to make that person into a decent citizen. As someone up thread has already said, the POS who allegedly killed the US student was already well known to the police and the courts.

  Once a person has been before the court 5 times, what I’d like to see the prosecution say at sentencing is something along the lines of:
  
  “Your Honour, the defendant has been before the court x times. I submit that if they are not incarcerated then sometime in the future a victim will be injured, and that injury will be the responsibility of this court not treating this crime seriously.”
  
  Won’t make a blind but of difference initially, but eventually the prosecution will be able to say
  ” Your Honour, the offender has been before the court y times, and now someone has been [assaulted/maimed/paralysed/killed]. You were warned.

      It’s disgusting that the jury is not allowed to know about a person’s previous offending. I guess that is to prevent prejudice but I am of the belief that most people on the jury are realists and can be trusted to act occordingly.
      
      Through their questioning a good lawyer will be able to detect and prevent potential prejudiced people be on the jury.

  The TV industry does not need more hand outs. TV is a well established industry that has been operating for over 60 years in NZ. They do not need a leg up to get them going.
  
  The same applies to industries such as yacht building. NZ is already the prime place worldwide for building yachts. They do not need a leg up either.
  
  All those leg ups can only happen by taxing other people more. That small bakery business on the corner is made more marginal by taxing them more and giving the hand outs to TV people.

        People measure social value all the time and have done for thousands of years, it isn’t that difficult.
        Long happy lives more social value than short miserable ones, healthy children that grow up to have children themselves have high social value, children that get sick and die young , or are never born at all have low or no social value. Medicine that stops you coughing up blood more social value than medicines that don’t and actually cause you to start coughing up blood, negative social value. Clean water more social value, literally shitty water less social value.
        That isn’t determined by a committee or by popular vote either. It is determined by the nature of reality which is not open to popular vote.
        The popular will and free choice are illusions and myths, never happened and never can happen because those choices are based on fundamentals that are themselves not chosen.

Yesterday we had another stolen car dumped opposite our house. That’s the fifth since Christmas on a 20 metre stretch of the street.

I look them up on the police stolen car page and report them. Number of times cops have shown up to take a look? Zero.

If the cops do nothing about them is it any surprise that NZ is second in the world for car theft?

  The daughter of a friend of ours had her car stolen. She reported it to the police and shortly afterwards they located it on the side of the road somewhere in a pitiful state consistent with having been abused by joy riders or some such.
  Probably only worth $2-3k. What are the police going to do?
  I had my house burgled about twenty years ago and maybe $20k stuff was stolen. The only reason the perpetrators were caught was because someone recognized something they stole elsewhere in a second hand shop. The police retrieved stuff from about thirty burglaries at their flat and I recognized a couple of items from our house

    Very unlikely.
    
    I doubt very much the police located it. Far more likely someone like me reported it. All the cops did was then tell her where it was.
    
    These days any vehicles that are not locked up at night should have one of those club steering locks.

You need an ANPR camera covering the area. We have many around our area and it keeps the nasties away.

  I’m sure that’s racist.
  
  Yes, I am considering installing a camera, but I doubt the cops would do anything with the footage.
  
  In three of the incidents I mention, we had reported the stolen vehicle within 2 hours of it being dumped. If the cops were really interested in tackling this, they could bring a dog to see if the trail leads to one of the baby factories in the next street over.

Is this not covered at the moment by

MP… “Yes, I / my party seek permission to do a haka?”

And in respect to legal inclusion of tikanga, the landmark Ellis case, the question of whether the case should be dropped because Peter Ellis died, should have been considered on the shear decency of correcting the record for his reputation, or deciding that the case was wrong in its findings and proving that with announcing a correction.
Should not consideration of tikanga relate to only those points in Maori protocol or legal custom which have no present New Zealand law counterpart?

And, has making the “Ellis case” now “a landmark case”, when Peter Ellis was not Maori, nor any of the “victims”, now diminished Peter Ellis’ “mana” and reputation in the eyes of those who oppose tikanga being inserted in law, which it has been done obtrusively in Peter’s case, at the suggestion of the Supreme Court itself, with lawyer watching to apply tikanga to a case, and the proceeding being delayed to allow tikanga to the instituted.

  You can’t just dismiss the concept because it is based on tikanga. the concept has to be examined on it’s merits, how it fits in with reality.
  NZ is based on English common law but that can’t be the sole legitimate source to get new information or concepts from, international human rights law is another innovation that the old Kings of England knew nothing about, and they themselves were originally French, inspired by the Romans and Greeks.

      Why should it? If there is additional information why should it not be considered? This isn’t an either or sort of question, if there is an area that both English common law and Maori Tikanga both have considered, why should only the English precedents be considered for New Zealand’s situation?

  And yet people doubt there is a Deep / Administrative State at work , barely disguised ,doing constant work to undermine our constitution ,democracy ,indeed our free way of life …..all being done a long long wat from any ballot box or true accountability to the electorate.

  Tikanga means that if a Maori activist wants something then they must be given it.
  
  It is a word and a concept that’s strength is in its vagueness.
  
  If it were defined it would be worthless.
  
  It makes the enforcement of ideology much easier.

TVNZ News ran a report about the Maori Battalion last night and as expected framed it around injustice. The Maori Battalion were fine young men and great soldiers and deserve better reporting than TVNZ’s politicising for a modern political agenda.

  Except, many of them weren’t either fine young men or great soldiers. The Maori Battalion made up about 4% of 2NZEF, but its soldiers were responsible for more than half of 2NZEF’s serious disciplinary issues. Note that these didn’t include the killing of POWs on multiple occasions in Crete, North Africa and Italy, and hundreds of incidences of rape in Italy, which were reported but never properly investigated.

Mate lived in Sydney and always had Tv at the door because of the home ram raids. Even farmers here have and should have the cameras on the boundaries because of the “special” meat collections. Cameras cheap enough today and all disturbances on your phone.

  Keep in mind Chuck – and I say this as someone who has repeatedly said that Luxon is letting some things (not all) happen to farmers that Labour would also have let happen – that the Horrid very much wants National defeated and if they can do that via articles that cause its own voters to despair then they will.
  
  It’s like these people swallowing everything about Trump, Musk, Hegseth and others, as reported by CNN/MSNBC/NYT/WaPo: “Sources who wished to retain their anonymity said….”.
  
  Imagine having a mind that, after a decade of such “inside sources” turning out to be bullshit, is still not even slightly suspicious of such “news”.

Hello folks.
I watch a bit of TV, including 1980s Music Hits, because that is what I like.
( being elderly, reminiscent, conservative, etc etc).
Today I saw a band called “Siouxsie and the Banshees”.
Slightly non-conformist. A bit eclectic.
“Our” Siouxsie Wiles is nothing new: well before she was born there was a Siouxsie making her mark on the world’s stage.
Without pink hair.
