I inflicted the budget speech of Takuta Ferris on myself yesterday afternoon. He didn’t actually talk about the budget but spoke for a very long time about how one million Maoris are disadvantaged and all other New Zealanders are privileged. The horrifying thing to me about this is that he appears to believe it.

I’m a good example of a typical Kiwi. My parents were allocated a State house in 1941, on the day I was born. My family came from Otahuhu where they had a little farm which had to be vacated in 1918 when my grandfather died from influenza. None of us had any property. My father and his brothers worked hard and all ended up with a house and a job. My father left school aged 12. His older brothers did a bit longer but none went to university. They and their children, my extended family, all went to school with mixed results. Some did well, others not so well. Typical of a Kiwi family of that time.

None of my cousins ever went to jail. None of us was ever unemployed, although I came close at one stage. None of us inherited any farm land or massive wealth. Lots have been to university but many not. None have had any special funding for anything, although Veterans Affairs is paying for some of my cancer treatment. Typical Kiwi family.

Mr Ferris spoke a lot of codswallop.

ACT leader David Seymour got it right when he told told media after the Budget debate that he was opposed to any kind of “raced based targeting of funding”.

“Well there’s no such thing as Māori funding, there’s funding for New Zealanders. I’m really getting tired of people trying to racially profile us, put us into categories based on our ancestry or whakapapa and then try and tag the Budget funding for that, it’s just got to stop.”

If the Maori Party wants to improve the lives of its voters then I suggest they encourage them to go to school and get jobs. Much better would be for them to listen to Shane Jones’ speech which preceded Ferris’. A brilliant piece of oratory which will be a classic on YouTube.

  No they don’t want to improve anyone’s lives – least of all Maori. Why?
  
  It’s a grievance industry. They need envious, entitled, disaffected Maori to vote for them. Fanning up the activists is what gets them votes.
  
  They are basically farming the disaffected Maori voters. Solving the problems would kill the goose that lays their golden eggs.

    Most Maori, like most of any other group, are decent people.
    
    It seems that radicals, gangs, Maori Party etc are encouraged to practice their antisocial and criminal behaviour in order to foment resentment from the rest of us.
    
    This resentment is then used by the activists to indoctrinate the 98% of decent Maori that we resent them also.
    
    Hence the perception of racial division, and hence the fuel for the Treaty Industry.

      Unfortunately there are a lot of them.
      
      I would argue that you’d need to be somewhat of an activist to get onto the Maori roll rather than the general roll. You have to believe you are somewhat special and deserve better treatment.
      
      Of course then there’s another step of then going and voting for TPM.
      
      Considering the number that do vote TPM that’s a considerable % of Maori that are driven by envy politics and entitlement.

        While I think there is a fair chunk of envy and entitlement, I also think that there is a very large number of cynical opportunists that don’t feel entitled or envious, but see a chance to make a truck load of cash from the NZ taxpayer by playing the victim.

I charged that we were taking $2 million a year from hard-pressed ratepayers and then saying to a tiny fraction of the indigenous population of Otago that their preferences and values were not just critical, but the ONLY preferences and values that counted. Which is … racism. The racial preference of one group over all others, by dint of their ethnicity.

  This is so typical of the local government machine.
  
  In Selwyn District Council, a public consultation exercise over creating a new CCO to manage water received something like 85% of all submissions strongly against the CCO and submitters could see no reason why Council even wanted to do it (hint – massive debt and lots of cushy roles for bureaucrats). Are Council going to take this overwhelmingly negative onboard? Don’t be silly – I’ve heard that Council plan to proceed regardless and are going to try and spin the consultation as supportive.
  
  And no centre-right party has any intention of fundamentally reforming the rort that is local government to sort out this crap.

The world is at a moral crossroads.

Continue to allow radical left groups to mobilise and spread anti western hate across university campuses and our major cities or actually start cracking down.

The murder of two Israeli diplomats at a Jewish museum in the USA is not an isolated incident and didn’t occur in a vacuum. There are violent anti Semitic attacks globally on a regular basis and the media and authorities turn a blind eye.

Israel and Jews are just a convenient target for these socialist groups to drive their dim witted supporters into a frenzy, but ever other group in society and our way of life is under attack.

The west goes crazy when some diplomats decide to go on a walk about (fact finding mission) in the West Bank and get warning shots directed at them for being somewhere they shouldn’t be, but then are silent when diplomats are murdered in cold blood.

The UK is on track to be a caliphate this century, France is already gone and the USA has a major issue with their top universities breeding rabid Marxists.

  It’s a very clever rhetorical trick for Jews to pivot from something like “stand for Israel’s right to exist” to now dress up their ethnic self-interest as being about “Western civilisation.” When fewer and fewer non-Jews care about Israel, the focus has to become making non-Jews in the West think that Israeli/Jewish interests are actually ours as well. They are not our interests.

  Nobody much cared (including most Jews, if their lack of collective outrage was anything to go by) over the last 10 or more years as Whites (i.e. Westerners) have been relentlessly and openly, and subject to no

Only now that, not Whites, but Jews and Israel are the target of exactly the same “radical left” groups, NOW “the West” must rally around and support the under attack Jews.   Message to any young Kiwis thinking of doing undergraduate or PhD study at one of the great American universities: look elsewhere. At the whim of the US Government, you could be kicked out of your chosen programme and forced to re-enrol at some other university, or leave the US altogether.

    It’s not at the whim of the US Govt. It is a direct consequence of the universities doing nothing to stop the rampant anti west and anti semitic activities happening on campus. A lot of the ring leaders are foreign students and have approved the privileges they were given to bite the hand that was supporting them.
    
    The universities themselves have also been warned more than enough times and have failed to comply.

      What you refer to as “antisemitic activities” is actually just open criticism of Israel, a foreign state. Americans can critice America, but not Israel? Why not?
      
      As I said further up the GD comments, when it was just anti-Western activities on campus, nobody cared. Certainly nobody in authority cared. Now that the activities are anti-Israel, only now do the authorities in US (that is, not Israeli) universities and the US government start to act? Obviously, and weirdly, they care more about Israel than they do about America.
      
      It’s actually probably easier to be anti-Israel on an Israeli campus, and that’s because in that context, it would have no influence on American public opinion about Israel (which, disasterously for Israel) has already plummeted over the last two years.

      BS. A visa is provided based on the conditions of the destination country and can be withdrawn at any time. There is no obligation on the country to provide a reason. This is not an innocent/guilty issue, it is a general behavior issue. The DHS has the right to say it believes none of the student visa holders approved by Harvard were properly vetted and that Harvard has not taken action to resolve the issue therefore all visas are being revoked.

        A country has the right to withdraw a visa at any time without reason, sure. Student enrolments and tourists also have the right to avoid going to a country where visas are withdrawn at any time without reason – so Paul’s warning to prospective travelers was 100% accurate, and I’m sure the huge drops in tourist numbers going to the USA will come as no surprise to anyone

Two Wellington Catholic primary schools are closing at the end of the year, due to falling rolls. Cardinal McKeefry, with capacity for 250+, has 54 pupils.

There are a number of reasons for the decline, but for me the one that stands out is that there are simply fewer primary aged kids in Wilton/ Northland/ Eastern Karori/ Brooklyn. These are heartland middle class suburbs. What it tells me is that increasingly parents cannot afford to buy or live in these areas. Families are either moving to the Hutt Valley or up the Coast, or having fewer kids.

Meh, you might say. As a non Catholic not living in Wellington, what concern of this to me?

My reply is that this snapshot should concern us all. Wellington is our nation’s capital. A city without children has no future.

I note that the Council is introducing $1 per hour fees for motorbike parking, for which no infrastructure is provided. No word on fees for bike parking, despite the $500k+ spent on this bike rack.

Doesn’t seem fair, does it.

I think this is a good move. WHO lied to everyone when they covered for China, said covid originated in bats rather than the bio weapon lab in Wuhan and told us we couldn’t criticise China because that would be racist.

Is NZ part of the WHO? Why yes we are. The WHO is trying to implement a global pandemic plan. This would mean doubling down on lockdowns, masks and vaccine mandates. WHO is in bed with China and make no mistake, another pandemic and they will be advocating lockdowns again.

Should NZ be part of the WHO? I’d say no. I wonder if any NZ politician agrees with me?

    Agree that changes need to made to KS but the constant minor tweaks to KS, especially by National do not help it.
    
    Since inception we have had National make a number of changes that were purely politically driven.
    
    Key reduced the minimum rate to 3%, because there were claims KS was racist and not available for the poor. A terrible move because, as all know, these schemes work much better with higher contributions.
    
    Key allowed money to be taken out for first home purchases, because National were under the gun for a ‘housing crisis’. A terrible move that breaks the core advantage of KS, compounding interest. If you clean out your account in your 20s / 30s you essentially restart saving from then, making a huge difference to your end savings.
    
    Key allowed Christchurch people to take money out of their KS after the earthquakes. No rules. I know people that bought two new cars with theirs! Again poor policy.
    Key halved the govt contribution from ~1000, to save money.
    
    The most recent changes, again halving the govt contribution, is again just a political move. The govt needed to save some money, so they did. They should have scrapped the entire thing but didn’t want to be accused of ‘scrapping the incentive’. The incentive is now a pathetic ~200, that’s not an incentive but still costs the govt a ton of money. Just stupid.
    
    The government needs to make the policy clear and simple and stock dicking around with it. Personally I think contributions should be tax free with tax paid at the end. The government should be clear about super, for example say for people currently under 50 it will be 80% of the current rate, under 40 it will be say 50% and under 30 it will be 20%, All new workers will get nothing.

      So if I am under 40 I will be funding oldies their 100% for the 20-odd years and I will get 50% when my day arrives and of course as a new worker set up to get nothing I will be funding pensions forever. This is the problem that all this type of suggestions founder on ….

        True but there are few alternatives. Ideally you tax younger people less, but since taxes are already not covering our costs as a country that is difficult. At some point during the switch someone will be disadvantaged.
        
        The alternative, means testing super is even worse. The people that have paid the most for the scheme and saved the most for retirement get nothing and people who perhaps have spent there entire life on benefits coast on getting the maximum. Remember super was sold as a retirement scheme we all paid into.

      I don’t think you’ve really thought through the whole breadth of the KS scheme. If you put in 3% then there’s an employer contribution of 3%, so up front you are getting a 100% growth on your investment. Using the minimum contribution of $1024, plus the $256 from tax (AKA Government), your $1024 becomes $2,304 PA, before your KS Schema growth.
      How is this not an incentive?

        artemisia – two of my kids are self employed, but they are still making contributions to KS and are effectively the sole employee in their own little company, selling their service to someone else.
        Again, if you know what you are doing or talk to a good tax/business consultant you can still get the most out of the system.
        As a net tax contributor, I don’t have any issue claiming my “government” contribution or my children doing the same. I figure over the years I’ve paid in far more than my kids and I are ever going to get out.

      National under Key allowed you to withdraw your contribution plus growth for a first home, you couldn’t touch the government contribution. It was done because it helped people put down a deposit on a first house, and I know several people who were able to buy their first house as a result. This includes myself and 2 of my children, and I suspect my daughter’s fiancé. although I haven’t asked, also a few others.
      I don’t regret using that part of my KS to buy our house. The growth in KS was decent enough to get me a deposit, but the resulting growth in the house value far outstripped the KS growth, so it was a good decision.

  Retirement savings and policies need to be long term non-partisan policies outside of political control. They need to be moved out of general government control where the government of the day can fiddle with it for votes.

    Couldn’t agree more. National in particular are guilty of using KS a political tool although Labours ‘we want KS invested in NZ’ move was also pretty terrible. I for one want my money invested overseas and it grinds my gears to see some KS plans investing in companies like Auckland airport.

  A quick Google suggests something between 10 – 20 % of income is an appropriate retirement savings rate.
  
  KiwiSaver started in 2007. If we had started with 3% each from employer and employee and increased that by 0.25% per year, we’d now be in that range.

    Nothing prevents you from putting 10% or 20% of your income into your KiwiSaver, or another long term savings vehicle, if you wish. Your bank and/or your KS provider will be happy to help you set it up.
    
    The benefit of you doing that, will accrue entirely to you.
    
    What exactly do you see as the public benefit that would justify the Government forcing you, and everybody else, to do that?

      I don’t think voters will vote to end public provision for people who didn’t provide for their own retirement. Too many voters have built their lives around the assurance of taxpayer funded superannuation.
      
      That being the case, I think everyone should save. KiwiSaver seems like a reasonable system for doing that.
      
      It less about purist “public good” and more about meeting democratic reality.
      
      And yes, I do agree that as private provision becomes more feasible, public provision should reduce, with a focus on assisting those who could not save, rather than those who did not.

    39% PAYE plus ACC plus GST on purchased goods/services plus petrol tax plus EQC levies plus rates etc and then another 20% of tax home pay?
    
    Where do you think people will be able to afford a mortgage/rent from acre that?
    
    Reality is our whole tax system is based on the boiling a frog approach. Slowly increase tax take through non inflation adjustments and extra levies and then at the same time wind back the entitlements so people get screwed on both sides.
    
    You are also up against Australia where as I understand the salaries are comparable to NZ or more and on top the employer not the employee contributes 12% to super funds.
    
    Is the pension getting unaffordable? Of course it is but a range of measures including slowly raising the age of entitlement and fundamental tax reform is needed.
    
    A logical approach to me would be to give people the option of $X per week at 65 going forward or higher $Y if you wait until 67 or 70.

      SR – I’ve been saying a sliding scale for pensions based on age of retirement is the way to go. Someone like myself with a sedentary job can easily work though to 70+, even if I were to go down to shorter hours. I’d not have a problem not getting my pension until 70, especially if I were to get a slightly increased rate because I chose to forgo the 5 years.
      As it is, with under 2 years to retirement I’m already talking to my boss about carrying on into retirement on shorter hours, and they are all for it given my specialized skill set that is very rare in NZ.

        Your situation isn’t everybody’s. I’m 62 and I stopped working cause I was just too dammed tired all the time. Not a physical job, a mental one, but I’d had enough. Waking up, working, going to bed and repeating again no longer had any attraction.
        
        I saved quite strongly for the time I worked and I can make it through to 65 on my savings. But I was heading for a breakdown and working to 70 was impossible.
        
        Might work for you but not everyone.

    Labor are making big changes to their system.
    
    They are doubling the rate to 30% for Super over $3m (not indexed) and taxing unrealised gains. This money has to be paid by the person too, not their super fund.
    
    Basically, the Aussie system allows people to put their businesses into their Super Funds but now Labor is going to steal their wealth. There are many farms in Super Funds for example. The Unions have a lot of control (an make a lot of money off) the big Super funds apparently.

Since moving to Australia in 2008, my super balance has grown steadily to $280k without additional contributions and over the last 2 years has started generating higher growth from investment return compared to contributions. The current projection based in the returns I’ve had since it started mean the balance should have tripled in 10 years. If I stayed in NZ, my Kiwisaver balance may be around $50k if I was lucky.

        Flossie: nope. Employer contributions are not actually paid by the employer on top of employee remuneration. They may be dressed up to look like that, but in practice the employer contribution comes out of the employee’s total remuneration.
        
        You have much more independent control here than you do in Australia, as to how much of your total remuneration goes into your retirement savings.

I was talking to a South African electrician during the week. He and his family basically dropped everything and left SA after some extremely unpleasant experiences there.
His view was that in 10 years the dialogue in NZ has got worse and worse – “I’ve heard this all before” in his words. His university educated kids have already jumped ship – twice the money in Aus and one in Singapore at a bank.
He and his wife are starting to think about retirement planning, now looking at options outside NZ.
We really dont know how much damage this shift to apartheid thinking has already done. How much investment? How many jobs just didnt happen because of the uncertainty this is creating.
As my new mate said, this is the frog in the pot stuff…..

I’m sitting back observing the rather confusing portrayal of the USA political scene at the moment. I have friends on both sides of what is becoming a rather nasty, tribal state of war.

I get sent memes accusing Trump of all means of nasty, crazy and incompetent behaviour. But without any apparent substance to back it up. Only opinions about what he is going to do (not announced or signalled in any way), and other spurious accusations. I recognise he does things differently, but there is never any criticism of the outcome.

On the other side I see an increasing amount of revelation about the state of affairs under the previous president. (I use a small p because I now doubt he was actually running the country, and well, in a punny way, that is his probem now). His diminished state of mental and physical health, which we here 8,000 miles away, could see. And now we hear that he had a cancer that most doctors would/should have picked up. Amazing!

So what to make of it?

Trump has an amazing team who all seem to be dynamic, and empowered to do their job. They appear to be there to do the business. And they include smart women who I’m impressed by. This indicates a good manager, not an incompetent one. meritocracy reigns.

So are we seeing genuine criticism, or just the gnashing of teeth of a woke mob, desperate to hang on to the entitled hold they previously held on the money and power for their favourite group of misfits? It seems they were paid to destroy America from the inside.

I do see subtle shifts in the US media as they realise their days are numbered. However back here they seem to be as crazy as ever. On TVNZ, portraying Trump’s calling the South African President out (for what we here have known for a long time as to the murder and genocide of the white farmers there) as an “ambush”. They stay in lockstep with the left side of the US media, in such identical ways as to indicate no independence in their news reporting, just cut and paste in a way I guess they are told to.

I look forward to the day where we can get news that does not require a daily military grade search and rescue operation just to extract the truth!

To me the highlight of the budget was the prescription changes. A simple change with no cost to the tax payer. A HUGE benefit to almost the entire population.

1. People will save a ton of money not having to got to the doctor just to renew their prescriptions. Only going once a year rather then 4 times is a huge saving.

2. The biggest improvement might be that when you really are sick you might be able to see a doctor! A potentially huge number of doctors visits that are just to fill out paperwork will be gone.

  Getting a prescription once a year sounds very good. However the pharmacy that handles it will now have an extra burden; do they stock a years supply of the medicine, then dispense the entire supply to you in one go, or do they issue 3 months and have the rest on repeats?
  I envisage a unholy mess for the poor chemist because of bookkeeping and storage of the medicines.

      As an oldie with long term health issues I’ve been told I will probably be on blood pressure meds, statins and blood thinners until I die. It’s not uncommon talking to my GP.
      
      As I am on long term treatment I now get to pay $X for a repeat prescription with the GP once a quarter and visit him once a year or if there is some sort of change or event. I will thus save $3X. Not a huge amount but it all helps but reduces a low overhead source of revenue for the GP.
      
      The bigger issue is the requirement to only get 30 days worth of meds at a time. This is a right royal pain when I’ve not changed my meds in a decade. It was brought in by Pharmac (I think) because there is a cohort who never finished their treatment and they wanted to reduce costs. This was done with a blanket policy in the usual stupid bureaucratic manner with no thought to other consequences.

        Buy a blood pressure machine and do your own BP tests as often as you like. I do mine on a Thursday morning.
        
        I use wrist cuff option. Not expensive. I dont need absolute accuracy. Just relative to last week.

    Nothing changes for the pharmacy as the prescription is still only filled on repeat. So you have to go in every 3 months (for example) to get your prescription filled again. All prescriptions in NZ go through an electronic system run by Whanau Tahi and their NZePS system (NZ Electronic Prescription Service). If your doctor gives you a prescription it’s automatically loaded into the NZePS database and optionally assigned to your pharmacy if you want that. The pharmacy gets notified there’s a script for them and also checks regularly for new scripts. If you don’t assign a pharmacy, then the one you give the paper script to will still update the ePS system when they fill your script. From what I recall of the system, repeat prescriptions can be configured to reactivate every x months. I know repeat prescriptions don’t create a new prescription entry in the database, only a new notice to fill the prescription.
    As long as the pharmacy has stock on hand based on their history I can’t see removing the requirement for a Dr visit as being an issue.

  You go once every 6 months too see the doctor at present, you ring for your prescription every second time, in my case that phone call costs $18, and Doctors $50 each 6 months, you don’t pay the prescription phone fee the time you visit the doctor

  Where patients need continuing prescriptions some doctors will issue one prescription without consultation but require to see the patient for the next one etc.
  Doctors may not wish to issue a 12 month prescriptions in some cases, since if things turn to custard the Health and Disabilities Commission may question why the doctor did not keep closer control on things.

    With a long term condition GPs have to see the patient annually (I believe this is compulsory if they are going to dispense) but the choice of attendance frequency under that is decided by the GP, typically in consultation with the patient.
    
    Where there has been no change for a long period annual can frequently be suitable.

The schools are allowed to act “in loco parentis” which means “in place of the parent”.

I assume that this is meant for emergency situations so that the school can safeguard kids .

Schools seem to now interpret this to mean “the school IS the parent”, and have taken it upon themselves to indoctrinate children with ideology, arrange abortions without the parents knowledge, teach them sexual practices, teach them dubious morals, and promote homosexuality whilst denigrating masculinity and femininity.

No wonder kids don’t want to go to school.

      I wrote to the Minister of Justice asking where in the process as the child was a minor did the parental rights get taken off the parent and given to another.
      then where did they get taken of the other and given back to the parent.
      
      I also asked if there were complications and the child died, who was held accountable as the parental authority had been taken off of the parents.

It’s funny how your past sometimes jumps out at you….

I subscribe to one of those academic paper services, mainly to get info on my various areas of research. Sometimes, however, the AI or whatever drives it decides to serve me up oddball papers. The last I got was by an academic at Oxford writing about Colonialism, rape and punishment in historical South Africa. I was about to skip past it but then I recognised the surname. The author was an acquaintance who had been to university with me. She got some PhD in women’s studies specialising in Colonial era Africa.

She was one of identical twins that I met through some mutual friends in Johannesburg, but they both went to university with me in Cape Town.

When we met, the one took an instant shine to me and the other an instant dislike of me. Both these feeling were amplified through the time that we knew each other.

Soon after meeting the one that liked me, we went out with a mutual group of friends to a restaurant for dinner. Neither of us had a car so we ended up getting a lift sharing the back seat (if you can call it a back seat) of an MG for 20km. She’s over 6ft and I am 6ft5, so it was a cozy trip and we emerged more friendly than before.

The one that disliked me encountered me having a conversation with the bushes after drinking far too much at a student party and that amplified her dislike. I at first thought it was the twin I liked, so I was expecting some sympathy and caring. Instead I got a cold shoulder and abuse.

The worst of this was that, being identical twins, I could never tell them apart. I’d have to wait for the reaction I got: a smile, a bounce in her step, maybe a hug or alternatively a scowl and a look of disdain and revulsion.

Stressful. I think that is what stood between us ever getting very serious.

    Maggy, I will admit that I could not stomach reading the whole paper. What I did read, I found thought provoking – but not really how the author intended.
    
    The paper uses one 1800s case in particular in make the kind of point you would expect from a women’s studies professor at Oxford specialising in the Colonial period: basically that colonialists were evil racists who valued non-white women less than white women. Yup, the expected pap of white guilt.
    
    However I found it interesting for completely different reasons.
    
    The quick version of the story is that a coloured (ie. mixed race) man raped a woman. He openly admitted the crime, was found guilty and was sentenced to death (as was often seen fitting for rape back in the day). The defence team thought that was too harsh and got a review. They pointed out that the woman who was raped was also coloured (and not white as the first judge had thought). This difference of race was one of the issues that then contributed to the sentence being reduced to a few years in prison.
    
    The argument is then made that the rape of a coloured woman was judged to be less wrong than the rape of a white woman, therefore colonialism was racist etc etc.
    
    And there is some validity to that argument. But I think this is an oversimplification if taken in isolation and there is also a flip side too.
    
    “White justice” in Africa (and no doubt the same in Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere) must have seemed rather arbitrary to other cultures with different value systems – especially back in the 1800s. In South Africa at least – if not elsewhere – some effort was made to try to negotiate these different value sets by having different laws, or applying the same laws differently, based on the value sets of both the perpetrator and the victim.
    
    My grandfather was a magistrate in South West Africa (now Namibia) around 1920. One of his biggest challenges was how to negotiate these cultural differences and still achieve law and order and some semblance of “fairness”. Unless there is a feeling of “fairness” then law does not lead to law and order.
    
    One big example in Africa is the large amount of inter-group violence – especially faction fighting and honour tit-for-tats (think kangaroo courts etc) etc. It is cultural. People get badly injured and often die. Would it be “fair” to impose a Western standard on these and call them assault, murder etc? Should someone be hanged for killing someone else in a faction fight or maining someone when delivering tribal justice?
    
    In one culture (ie a set of values) an action might be deemed a minor infraction, in another it might be deemed evil. Thus the punishments handed out by courts took into account the culture of the perpetrator, the victim and the cultural conditions in which they happened.
    
    I can’t say I have a very clear opinion, but I would say that it is very different if a Zulu guy kills another Zulu guy in a faction fight (ie. under Zulu values) vs the same Zulu guy killing a white guy or a white guy killing another white guy (ie. under Western values).
    
    It is also an oversimplification to judge the past through a modern lens. It should be remembered that at the time this happened:
    * Slavery was rife throughout Africa (only really stamped out around 1920).
    * Zulu men were being sent off to fight whether they wanted to or not. Men had no choice in that. When they returned (if they did), all the unmarried girls over the age of 13 or so were forced to participate in “cleansing ceremonies” which were basically sex orgies.
    
    So yes, I found it somewhat interesting, but perhaps not as the author intended.

Is she talking about theoretical physics concepts of time? What is she saying? Does she realise that if time were non-linear this might mean the Waitangi Treaty had not yet been signed?

The report continues: ” … Maori have held a long and historic connection to horses as they were used as a tool to colonise Aotearoa but have since been reclaimed as part of our whakapapa.”

The Polynesians arrived in New Zealand by canoes and without horses. Maori met horses a mere two centuries or so ago.

Ancestors of most white New Zealanders include Yamnaya people of the steppes of Russia and Ukraine. These early horse users — the Beaker culture people — arrived in Britain nearly 4,500 years ago, before the Celts.

  I believe NZ does not have slower drivers, but lower speed limits. There are plenty of countries where the open road limit is 120 / 130 / 140 / 160 or no speed limit.

    And the safety elves went on a tear over last 5-10 years hugely increasing number of lower speed zones in communities all over the country, though of course no impact on road toll, just much slower and more expensive and distracting controls that assume people can’t or wont drive to the conditions and all the bullshit ‘safety’ measures and stringent speed policing imposed by zealots hasn’t produced any noticeable safety improvement in a decade – but they are a feelz based rather than data driven crowd.

      Well said NothingLeft one facet never debated is how often the fatality occurs when a vehicle for whatever reason is speeding at well above the legal limit not doing 52Kph on an empty road within a 50 kph area?
      Then there are the Child racer events that turn to custard real quick, where the actual ground speeds may be quite low but the sought after loss of traction leads to a vehicle careering into the by standers.

    If the those with the high melanocyte counts were admitted with the same marks as the stale pale ones, then there would be no need for Polynesian Preference, would there. The fact is that they get admitted judged on the colour of their skin and not on the results of their exams – res ipsa loquitor.

  Thirty years ago I had a pretty negative experience with a senior vascular surgeon regarding varicose veins. He is Indian.
  
  Last month I went back and saw a vein specialist to try and deal with more problems in this area. She is PI.
  I sat and listened to her, asked her questions, told her about my concerns from the last experience. She was clear, direct, looked me in the eye, explained everything.
  When I get back I’ll be proceeding. I have every confidence in her.

If you want to have a good laugh, go to the Green party tax calculator to estimate what you would pay under their proposed wealth tax (only takes a minute or so.
Once you have done it, pray they do not get in to government and get their way.

    I’d be about the same. Did you include the 33% wealth transfer tax when you die?
    
    However about ⅔ of mine is in a family Trust. This drops the take to $36k, the remainder being my house and vehicles are now under $2M so exempt, and when I die the trust keeps going with the other beneficiary, no transfer.
    
    But in any case I’d likely pull up sticks and take it away out of their reach. I didn’t pay someone 66% tax back in the day so those “Tuesdays” could reach in later.

  “Said to have been found”? What does that mean? It’s VERY unlikely the Chinese reached NZ before Polynesians, because the Chinese didn’t venture very far afield until the 14th and early 15th centuries.
