Test your broadband speed
Consumer Online has a nifty wee broadband speed test. It measures both download and upload speeds.
My download speed on Ihug was clocked at 1732 Kbps and upload at 130 Kbps.
In theory I have a 3.5 Mbps plan, but my connection speed is only 2.2 Mbps.

Craig Whitmore has had the same test (and others too) over on NZDSL for a long time now.
Also, it looks like Consumer didn’t buy enough bandwidth from Maxnet…

There are potentially lots of things that you can do to improve your connection. See what happens if you run two speedtests in parallell, do you get more bandwidth? If so, it’s probably your computer thats limiting the speed, not your ADSL line.
TCP has a “Window Size” which it uses to prevent overloading the remote end by sending it too much data too fast (not to be confused with the Congestion Window which stops you overloading intermediate computers). By default under Windows this window is somewhere between 17k and 80k depending on various factors. You can calculate the required window size by taking the RTT (aka latency, aka “ping”) and the bandwidth of the connection and multiply these together. Also, using mtr to the site shows a lot of latency , jitter and loss in the last few hops which suggests that maxnet’s link is congested.

JohnD: the numbers I posted indicate that the connection to Consumer’s speedtest site is quite busy – the numbers show in milliseconds how long time a response from the server takes to reach my system. Normally, I’d expect to see 15-25ms responses, but as you can see above it takes well over 100ms instead.
There also seems to be a small amount of packet loss on the link, which again shows that it’s probably quite busy. See Perry’s message.

Download Speed: 2946 kbps
Upload Speed: 478 kbps
Usually my work connections is about 1200 – 1700kbs down and 300 up. That’s is 7km away from home and on a different exchange. Two different rural towns.
