Another whopping surplus

February 28th, 2007 at 2:13 pm by David Farrar

Treasury has just published the half year accounts for the Government, and surprise surprise an ever growing surplus.

It is now at $4.47 billion. To be fair most of the increase above budget are one off revaluations, rather than changes to core revenue and expenses.

Talking of revaluations, the rail network appears to have been revalued upwards by $10.3 billion – that’s a huge net worth increase.

The rail network valuation appears to be bogus.

The value of the rail network on the books of the NZ Railways Corporation recently was about $90 million. Even when owned by Tranz Rail Ltd it was valued about $350 million, considered to be an inflated level.

It is hard to see how you can go from that to $10.3 billion.

It is hard to see how you can go from that to $10.3 billion.

Prior valuations had different underlying assumptions.
I do like how the revaluation decreases the surplus (increased depreciation).

As from 1 July 2006, the rail network has been valued to the basis of depreciated replacement cost ($10.7 billion). Previously, this asset was reported at historical cost ($0.3 billion). This approach provides a more current value for the rail network and is more consistent with the approach taken to other significant items of property, plant and equipment. The valuation change has been charged directly to equity. The Statement of Financial Performance is consequently impacted by increased depreciation.

Nevermind the $800,000.00 they used last election illegaly. By this time next year they will have 5 Bil to spend on pet projects with the sole purpose of retaining power.

Yes, I agree Lance that the pathetic mental health joke was in very poor taste and make my rantings look tame.

Sonic and others, I am not worried for myself, its the future of the country I am concerned with. I am concerned for the poor hard working people of any sex or colour who have to pay for the political elite to have their wet dreams, junkets and social gerrymandering.

And one of the main hurdles to progress in this country is the archaic and mischievous bigotry from the left and MSM about who has money and power and who does not. I am not sure exactly what purpose perpetuating these lies serves but it alienates a large portion of the population. I have repeatedly asked for the names of these bad rich people and companies we are meant to despise and never receive a response.

As another thread indicates the government (and therefore I assume you) think these nasty rich people are the self employed. However the majority of the self employed in this country are the hard working underclass that I support – they fix drains, clear the trash and keep the country running.

Meanwhile the “right” on these blogs have no problem with identifying who they think the rich and powerful are – they almost unanimously agree it is the political establishment, that spends all its time shiting on the hard working people. So if you want to look for the privileged people in this country look no further than the politicians and their cronies.

To Sonic. I am what you dislike, a white middle class salary earner with a wife and kids, and I am also what makes up the MAJORITY of NZ. And like the majority of NZer’s I am rapidly becoming something I seriously dislike, a racist. BUT, like most Kiwi’s I am NOT a racist to the individual or small group, but am rapidly heading down the path of hateing the “group” i.e “The Maori”, “the Asian”. This is because your Govt and the MSM constantly bombard me with tales of woe and horror about these groups ‘as groups’. How they cause the problems or need more of my limited hard won resources simply to get where I got by my own hard work. I also see a Govt who is constantly more interested in these groups life and problems and have no care for my own. You have shown yourself to be the same but with a difference; you are a racist against me and my kind, not because of evidence but because of idealogical reasons (or is it jealousy?). If I truely wanted to be baised in my reply, I would simply ask you: who created the food you eat, the machines that processed it, the roads it travelled on, the trucks that moved, the computers that guided it or in fact ANY aspect of your life? Thats right, hard working middle class white males. check your history and please find me an example where I am wrong. But please also note that all of this was acheived with the team work of their families and fellow workers i.e typical average people. These people absolutely deserve to keep what is theirs and not to have it hoarded by any Govt for “redistribution” or “social engineering”

A large part of the surplus is from Cullens super-fund overperforming (again).

The idea is that when you’re old and don’t have an income this fund will help support you. The consensus here seems to be that this money should be instantly dispersed to white, single property owning males with high incomes.

Since I’m one of them this plan wouldn’t work out too badly for me, but personally I’d rather have the money in forty years time when I’ll actually need it.

That would never be expected, any reasonable person knows that the demographic you are describing don’t normally vote Labour and Labour would target it’s vote buying much more cleverly than that.

Since you suggest it’s wrong to give it out to people who “don’t need” it (even though it was mainly their money to start with) I do wonder quite what is valid usage for it (apart from claiming that 65% of the minimum wage is enough to grow old comfortable on) – do you have a Labour supporter special interest group in mind?
