Public Policy for Students and Young Ones Add this story to Scoopit!.

The Business Roundtable has a forum tomorrow (Tuesday) night for students and youngish people (I guess under 30) on the subject of “Public Policy: Whose Business Is It?”.

The panel is Labour MP Charles Chauvel, Seaworks CEO Bill Day, and Roger Kerr.

It’s a low key forum to get younger people  interested in public policy issues.  In the best Kiwi tradition beers and pizzas will be provided on the night.  So if you are interested in public policy and/or economics come along.

Date: Tuesday 9 October
Time: 5.30 pm – 7.00 pm
Venue: NZBR, Level 12, Bayleys Building, cnr Lampton Quay and Brandon Street

RSVP to Laura Currie by e-mail or 471 8206.  You do need to RSVP to attend.

I’d love to attend myself (cough they did say youngish cough) but will be in Tauranga tomorrow night.

How publicly minded of the Business Roundtable!

They wouldn’t have any ulterior motive, would they?

  2. Sam Dixon (630) Says:

I have an ulterior motive of drinking all their beers.

  3. Sam Dixon (630) Says:

Think of it as a redistribution of wealth

  4. Redbaiter (9301) Says:

“Think of it as a redistribution of wealth”

Yep, a good example of the non productive shamelessly bludging off the productive…

  5. Inventory2 (4103) Says:

Careful Sam – I can say from personal experience that the kind of redistribution of wealth you are referring to leads to inflation of the girth!

  6. Sam Dixon (630) Says:

RB – I’ve had the pleasure of meeting BizRoundtable head Rodger Kerr and others in the past. Let me assure you, they are far from productive.

  7. david (1271) Says:

Bloody righties, and they’ve even trotted along a tame MP to peddle their filthy capitalist philosophies.

  8. dad4justice (6088) Says:

A tame or lame – duck MP ?

  9. Redbaiter (9301) Says:

“Let me assure you, they are far from productive.”

Productive enough tho for you to boast of bludging their beer off them at the same time as you sneer at them. How odious.

  10. Sam Dixon (630) Says:

Inv2 – I hear that. But I reckon I might get away with it as long as I load my 16 tonnes. http://www.lyricsdownload.com/ernie-ford-16-tons-lyrics.html

(interesting to note that in the land of the free many radio stations banned that song for its anti-capitalist message)

  11. unaha-closp (666) Says:

They wouldn’t have any ulterior motive, would they?

The Roundtable seem awfully chummy with a Mr Chauvel, MP. Is he trustworthy? What is the motive? Is Charles a (unwitting) stalking horse for the hollow men set to undermine the government? Or is this a double bluff to undermine the credibility of a true loyalist?

Conspiracies – half baked to order.

  12. Redbaiter (9301) Says:

“(interesting to note that in the land of the free many radio stations banned that song for its anti-capitalist message)”

..and the PROOF of this assertion is?? If it hadn’t been for free enterprise, the song would never have been recorded and it would never have sat at the top of the charts for as long as it did.

  13. Tane (1096) Says:

Hey David, sorry to post off-topic, but Robinsod’s wondering why he got banned. As you can imagine he’s a little confused, and upset, and needs some closure on this.

  14. PaulL (3185) Says:

Poor wee thing. Confused, upset. Needs closure. Did you ban him or break up with him DPF?

  15. barry (472) Says:

They should only let in those who have voted in the local body elections

    – otherwise theyre just there for the piss.

  16. Tane (1096) Says:

That was a joke, PaulL. Trying to take my joke and turn it back on me just makes you look stupid.

  17. hinamanu (1559) Says:

    How did robinsod get banned

it was D4J who was kicking up behind DPF’s back the other night

When the cats away the rats will play

  18. PaulL (3185) Says:

Tane, it wasn’t clearly a joke.

Sorry, I haven’t read every thread on kiwiblog today, maybe there was some context somewhere else I missed. Given the closeness of the relationship between you two, and the normal tone of both your and his posting, it seemed a real request.

  19. Tane (1096) Says:

PaulL, our mate ’sod was banned the other day with no explanation. The joke was that a street-fighting, foulmouthed roustabout like Robinsod is hardly going to cry over a one month Kiwiblog ban. But then it’s never as funny when you have to explain it, eh?

  20. nih (361) Says:

I suspect linking the same article twice had something to do with it, as Sonic had already worked DPF up with exactly the same behaviour. The difference this time was Robinsod wasn’t trying to troll DPF, he was trying to get commenter discussion on the article. There’s probably some room for more understanding towards Robinsod there.

  21. nih (361) Says:

By the way, has anyone noticed we have a horde of Paul-variants from all over the political spectrum posting? I’m finding them hard to tell apart since I keep forgetting who uses what handle.

    PaulL
    Paul
    PaulW

  22. hinamanu (1559) Says:

D4J got under the scanner,, and he was the loudest perpertrator,,

he’s a genius,, or DPF’s brother in law

  23. PaulL (3185) Says:

Or, if you have to explain it then it probably wasn’t as funny as you thought it was :-)

I’ve noticed a few threads with more conversation and less tanty throwing in the last couple of days, hard to place the cause and effect. I do notice less sonic and less Robinsod, and less rabid posting from those on the right that they are usually jousting with. Even without an explanation, it is nice.

  24. hinamanu (1559) Says:

    no paulie yet huh

  25. dad4justice (6088) Says:

“it was D4J who was kicking up behind DPF’s back the other night”

The true backstabber . Shit this country is fill of cowards !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. nih (361) Says:

It seems to me a coward would be someone who stays quiet and puts up with your ongoing abuse. Fortunately for you, most of us understand that you’re unable to control yourself.

  27. hinamanu (1559) Says:

    lol

You besmirch DPF. He banned Robinsod for excessive trolling (although, admittedly, he’s by no means the worst culprit around here)

  29. David Farrar (1309) Says:

Oh how awful that the BRT might try and interest young people in policy debate. Quick let’s pass a law against it – oh wait Labour is already trying that.

Robinson was banned for repeated trolling with the final offence being link whoring a political article in a thread about rugby.

  30. roger nome (4067) Says:

You mean he was too effective at kicking tory butt DPF?

  31. hinamanu (1559) Says:

    yes well,,

I don’t think the BRT and labour are joined at the hips

But I also don’t think the BRT willl speak up for free speech

Has there been a precedent ??

  32. David Farrar (1309) Says:

No Roger, he was effective at trolling. There is a difference.

  33. Sam Dixon (630) Says:

Where does RB get the anger from? Look at the anger he manages to me recounting how the song ‘16 tons’ was banned from a number of radio stations (under govt pressure) when it was released becuase of its anti-capitialist overtones:

“..and the PROOF of this assertion is?? If it hadn’t been for free enterprise, the song would never have been recorded and it would never have sat at the top of the charts for as long as it did.”

Notice, he instantly, angrily assumes that the story isn’t true, challenages me to prove a tiny little aside, for no other reason than that the story implies bad behaviour on account of capitalist organisations. Now, I know it because I’ve read a background on the song, but even if I were to provide a link that wouldn’t be good enough for RB.

    Incredible

  34. Sam Dixon (630) Says:

Ok, because I’m sure you’re geninuely interested, rb: here’s the sotry from the site of the singer mot associted with the song:
    http://www.ernieford.com/SixteenTons.htm

  35. dad4justice (6088) Says:

Maybe Sam , red baiter is disgusted and appalled , like myself by the antic’s of a clearly corrupt liarbour lickspittle government ?

  36. hinamanu (1559) Says:

    Hey Sam,

Thanx for that music history mann

    tu meke

  37. PaulL (3185) Says:

nih: Hey, can I help it that my parents were unoriginal? And I have been here a fair while longer than PaulW or Paul – personally I think they should have chosen much more distinctive handles given that I was here first. Not that keen to change mine since I use it in a number of places, and it would feel a bit like I was using multiple handles. That was something that RB once accused me of, and that I have never done, although I admit to posting as anonymous on some blogs that insist on word verification but don’t display that word for verification in Firefox.

  38. PaulL (3185) Says:

    Sam, thanks for the history.

Just so I can be clear, we are talking about a song that there was some pressure around in the late 1940s. It was rerecorded in the mid 50s and became a hit. So we are really arguing about something that happened 50 years ago as somehow relevant to today? Dunno why RB even bit (presumably because he didn’t check it and just reacted).

  39. Redbaiter (9301) Says:

Dixon’s reference gives proof of nothing. Even if one accepts the charge as unchallengeable truth, it does not even specify the particular song, and does not amount to evidence that any stations acted on the advice. As usual with Dixon, his words are far from the actuality. Forget the deceit tho. To call this story “proof” is the action of a damn fool.

“Veteran Capitol producer, Ken Nelson, who worked at WJJD radio in Chicago in the late forties, recalled in a 1992 interview that FBI agents advised the station not to play Travis’ records,”

“Where does RB get the anger from?”

Moron. so insulated from reality, so immersed in leftist ideology, he thinks that to disagree with the utter laughable bullshit that is the foundation of leftism is a sign of anger. Grow up Dixon. Your ideology is based on legends and distortion and lies.

  40. uk_kiwi (83) Says:

Well it was very interesting and well attended, thanks to the BRT for putting on a good spread. Speeches were good and short, no rambling on! Charles Chauvel clearly had the legal machinations down, and Bill Day was about as straight up as you can get with his answers re RMA and other issues.

Roger Kerr was on message about converting NZ into the next Ireland, Singapore or Hong Kong, and gave lots of time to some persistent questioners. Some controversial questions about the EFB and anonymous funding of parties- lots of points of view expressed. Privatisation was another hot topic.

I imagine a lot of the BRT forums are preaching to the converted, this one certainly wasn’t! It was refreshing to learn more about the reason for the existence of the BRT as well- didn’t realise it was actually as old as all that, thought it was pretty much a product of the 1990s.

  41. roger nome (4067) Says:

“Roger Kerr was on message about converting NZ into the next Ireland”

So he wants to reinstate centralised collective bargaining and a tripartite corporatist economy?

  42. Seamonkey Madness (295) Says:

No, I think he wants NZ to convert all its dairy farms into lucrative, disease-free potato farms.

    Idiot.

  43. roger nome (4067) Says:

I merely pointing out that Ireland’s improvement in living conditions and wages is a result of strong economic growth and a strong union movement that is willing to work with the government and employers. They call it the “social partnership approach”. On the other hand de-unionised economies like the US and New Zealand have had strong economic growth but low wage growth, and a consequential stagnation of living standards.

    Do you understand?
