Free Wireless Add this story to Scoopit!.

Heh now this was an accident.

In Hamilton and bootup my laptop.  It starts up and MSN Messenger logs in (which is what I needed it for – to talk to a techie) and I start chatting.  Also open up e-mail and web etc.

Only after an hour or so do I remember that I never connected to the Internet.  I don’t recall plugging into a LAN or using the data card. I check and nope my Vodafone data card wasn’t how I was connected as I never opened it up.

So how am I on the Internet?

I check the wireless connection and sure enough someone has an unsecured wireless called “linksys” and as that is a default name I have connected to before, it connected me up without even checking.

So thanks to someone in Hamilton for an hour’s Internet.  It was an accident!

At least you’ve apologised for being a socialist for an hour.

    ;)

Be careful doing that; a dodgy wireless owner might start sniffing the traffic you’re sending across which would have privacy implications. I prefer IM networks like Google Talk because you have the option of encrypting the entire connection.

The chances of that are pretty slim.

So if the person who you filtched time from fronts up, are you going to pay for the time used?

[DPF: Good God how desperate are you to try and score a point. Pathethic. Time based accounts went out oh around 1,000 years ago in Internet time. Almost all charging is data based now. Now if someone can prove it was their wireless I was on, I'm happy to pay them 25c for the 5 MB or so I used.]

DPF: assuming they didn’t want to treat their hub as a free access point. Which is not too unlikely given the unlocked connection , free spirited and generous nature of the left wing contributors on this blog.

“being a socialist for an hour.”

As he was living off of the labour of others, surely he was just being a good capitalist!

I am essentially a right winger… but I believe in open source mantras and ideals like free shared Internet; this is not purely an Ideology of the left.

Sharing your internet is really a personal choice that transcends left or right wing politics… in fact it is probably more related to weather or not you are a nice person (want to) and/or a rich person (can afford to). As most left wingers would have you believe that those two concepts are mutually exclusive it nicely proves my point.

On a technical note I have found that as I have in the past done a lot of access point testing (usually on new unsecured AP’s) my laptop is forever picking up others unsecured AP’s too.
