The Russell media empire grows Add this story to Scoopit!.

The Russell Brown media empire continues to grow.  On top of his blog, his print columns and his radio show, Russell is to be the presenter of Media 7, which will be on the new TVNZ 7 channel.

I’d like to say I’m looking forward to seeing it, because I think NZ needs more not less shows which focus and can be critical of the media. But I’ve really got no intention of paying hundreds of dollars to buy and install a receiver for the new TVNZ channels.  The 100+ channels I get on Sky are more than enough for me.  So I’ll have to rely on people to You Tube the show.

  1. Grant S (146) Says:

So let me get this straight.

A minute portion of the provisional tax bill I’m about to send to the IRD is going to pay for Russell Brown to do what he always does – to spout tirades of commie propaganda, to offer oleaginous, sycophancy towards the Government, and to malign and jam any dissension with layer upon layer of political correctness – all throughout election year ?

Worse still is the way such people continue to appoint themselves as part of some enlightened intelligentsia who REALLY do KNOW what’s good for “us”.

  2. helmet (799) Says:

    Duh Grant.

You *don’t* know what’s best yourself. Only ‘Russel the love mussel’ Brown does.

  3. Gabriel Pollard (8) Says:

It might be put on TVNZ ondemand. I hope they do, because it should be a good show to watch, like Mediawatch is good to listen to.

  4. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Thanks for the opinion Gabriel. Mine’s different. Mediawatch is commie crap, and I’ll bet Media 7 is just more of the same. Boring one dimensional leftist twits pushing boring old leftist myths about right wing bias in the media, the Murdoch press being the devil incarnate, blah blah blah blah fucken blah. Just the same old leftist lies and propaganda that typifies todays mainstream print and electronic media. Seeking the truth? Don’t waste your time watching this predictable partisan crap.

  5. karl meads (7) Says:

Could someone please enlighten me as to who Russel Brown is? I have been away for some time now, well, back and forth, and I am afraid this whole media “empire” thing is a bit beyond me. Is he perhaps related to James Packer?

  6. Dave Mann (859) Says:

What interests me more is the question of what this new tchnology hols for TVNZ generally. I don’t have Sky, but I hear that one’s recording options are severely limited thru a Sky decoder. Can anybody throw any light on any of the following questions for me, please:

    1. I’m assuming this ‘set-top-box’ thingy is Freeview?
    2. Will analogue TV transmission be phased out in favour of this digital thingy, or will analogue ‘free to air’ still exist?
    3. Using Freeview, will one be able to record stuff like at present on a DVD recorder?
    4. Will one be able to record one channel while watching another (as I can at present with my DVD recorder)?

If anybody knows all about this, I’d love to hear (read) it… Cheers!

  7. karl meads (7) Says:

Oh, and before I forget, Mr Grant S, you do understand the principle of government by representation don’t you? I mean, at one time in the past the people of NZ did vote for this stalinistic regime of muslim leftie terrorists. However I am sure you will illuminate us all with the same populist tripe that you no doubt have been peddling for some time. Let me guess, it wouldn’t have anything to do with tax cuts would it?

  8. karl meads (7) Says:

    Dave Mann,
I myself had no trouble recording through a sky box when I was last home. I am fairly sure that you would have no trouble hooking up your dvdr to a digital box. I am not certain but I would think that TVNZ would continue broudcasts in analogue until they were fairly certain that everyone had a digital box. They did promise the good companies that pay them for advertising a certain amount of viewers after all.

  9. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

A minute portion of the provisional tax bill I’m about to send to the IRD is going to pay for Russell Brown to do what he always does – to spout tirades of commie propaganda, to offer oleaginous, sycophancy towards the Government, and to malign and jam any dissension with layer upon layer of political correctness – all throughout election year ?

Well, Grant, if that’s the plan I suspect my time on the writing staff is going to be short and not very good tempered. All I’d say at this point is suspect judgement (especially when its very much still in development), and don’t assume its going to be that ‘political’ even in an election year. The media universe is a little wider.

  10. philu (12,457) Says:

    “..susoect judgement..”

    indeed..!

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  11. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

D’oh… SUSPEND judgment, though I like the typo too.

  12. lloydois (268) Says:

Just content yourself with Fox News Redbaiter. You can be secure in your delusions and the rest of us can be spared the tedious tirades.

  13. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

    “rest of us”

Perhaps you could identify the posters who have delegated you to express their opinions?

  14. philu (12,457) Says:

didyasee the other day a former top dude at fox went public..?

saying/confirming the fox network ‘makes things up’..

but that does ‘fit’ with redbaiters mainly delusional fantasies..

    so..

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  15. philu (12,457) Says:

    me..!

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  16. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“my time on the writing staff is going to be short”

Certainly hope so. If they ever needed a token PC so called rightist who wouldn’t rock the boat too much, they couldn’t do much better than you Cwaigy…

  17. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

No matter who you delegated to express your opinions Phil you dope addled dole bludging parasite, it would have to be be an improvement on the disconnected illogical narcissitic infantile crap you habitually plague this forum with…..

  18. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Phil, like lloydois, another mentally dysfunctional loser who apparently can’t control his compulsion to read messages from Redbaiter.

  19. philu (12,457) Says:

    (heh-heh..!..)

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  20. philu (12,457) Says:

was that you i heard the other night..?..redbaiter..?

howling at the moon/into the void..?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  21. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

Certainly hope so. If they ever needed a token PC so called rightist who wouldn’t rock the boat too much, they couldn’t do much better than you Cwaigy…

Can I put that on my c.v., Baiter, because that’s the best endorsement I’ve had – ever. The contempt of the contemptible is a badge of honour, in my book.

  22. philu (12,457) Says:

    hardly a ‘compulsion’..dear heart..

think of yourself as more of a carbunkle on the face of the gargoyle that is kiwiblog..

    eh..?

    there you go..!

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  23. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Maybe you can read a few pages of “your book” on the new show To .

  24. philu (12,457) Says:

and as for you writing for the telly..craig..

    congratulations..’break a leg!’..and all that..

    but i have to say..

seeing your (mainly) sex/fetishist fantasies you trot out here..

    i have to ask..

are you reviewing x-rated porn for them..?

you do seem eminintly qualified to do that..

    eh..?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  25. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

    “hardly a ‘compulsion’..”

Must be. LLoydois said he wanted to be spared Redbaiter posts, which indicates he reads them when he doesn’t want to, and you agreed that he could speak for you. So fuck off lamer, and stop wasting time on an opinion forum with your infantile self obsessed chatroom crap.

  26. Richard (125) Says:

“So fuck off lamer, and stop wasting time on an opinion forum with your infantile self obsessed chatroom crap.”

    That comment’s just beyond parody.

  27. kino flo (70) Says:

I’m thinking of getting Freeview for the high definition programmes. I’m really looking forward to seeing the Olympics in high def.

  28. philu (12,457) Says:

    redbaiter ‘is beyond parody’..

    phil(whoar.co.nz0

  29. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

“So fuck off lamer, and stop wasting time on an opinion forum with your infantile self obsessed chatroom crap.”

Don’t like the competition, Baiter? How very socialistic of you…

  30. Russell Brown (394) Says:

    1. I’m assuming this ’set-top-box’ thingy is Freeview?

Yup. But TVNZ 7 launches alongside Freeview Aerial — or the DTT version, for geeks. You’ll be able to receive it with a Freeview box or one of the forthcoming Freeview-enabled TV sets. It will also be available on the satellite Freeview service.

    2. Will analogue TV transmission be phased out in favour of this digital thingy, or will analogue ‘free to air’ still exist?

The latest date for a decision on an analog switch-off is 2012, but I wouldn’t worry about that for at least another five years.

    3. Using Freeview, will one be able to record stuff like at present on a DVD recorder?

    Yes.

But according to Drinnan’s story (which I presume is correct), the rollout of the Freeview PVRs has slipped back till around September. As a MySky user, I have to say this looks like a bit of a problem for them. On the bright side, the Freeview PVRs will be very cool — they’ll also be home networking centres.

The key difference between Freeview and Sky (apart from the fact that you pay for one of them) is that you own your Freeview box, which is both good and bad. There are some confusing consumer signals going on when you say “get it now!” and “PVRs coming in September!”.

    4. Will one be able to record one channel while watching another (as I can at present with my DVD recorder)?

If you already have a DVD recorder that can receive the satellite Freeview signal, yes. But you probably don’t.

Unapproved third-party devices for Freeview Aerial might be scarce for a while, given that it will be broadcasting in MPEG4, which is fairly new.

I need to talk to TVNZ about the availability of the programme __outside__ New Zealand on TVNZ ondemand, but I’d like to see that happen.

Anyway, while we might fail to meet Redbaiter’s exacting standards, I hope that that the show will appeal to anyone interest in the media. Craig will be writing, and DPF is so on the list of panelists.

    There’s more here:

    Woo! I link-whored!

  31. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Funny- a truncated post. Forget what I said now Cwaigy, but it was something about the title of your “book”, and it most likely being “How To Kiss Commie Arse”. See they love you over on KBB, but for some unfathomable reason, they don’t like me at all. Damn, that causes me some grief.

My exacting standards?? Yep, I know Russell. Objective comment would be far too much to expect.

  32. philu (12,457) Says:

    was it something i said..?

    (heh-heh..!)

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  33. philu (12,457) Says:

well..i was one and a bit months out..

one of my predictions for 2007 was that the two (tame) gatekeepers…

would start ‘working together’ in 2007..

    and here we are..!

    eh..?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  34. philu (12,457) Says:

will you be ‘getting a room’..?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  35. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Predictions even? While they’re handing out air time to even more leftist sycophants, maybe you could get a show too Phil. You could bore every one stupid with your chicken little watermelon crap..” Sensing Idiocy”

  36. philu (12,457) Says:

so..let me see if i’ve got this right..

we are to watch ‘russell’ and david farrar..nodding/pontificating at each other..

and..written by craig (‘crack that whip..!..boy..!) ranapia..?

    sheesh..!..someone pass the no-doze..!

    eh..?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  37. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

I like the way they call it “Freeview”. Dumbarsed socialists think money drops out of the sky to pay for these things. If they’re was any justice, they’d be prosecuted for false advertising.

  38. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

Forget what I said now Cwaigy, but it was something about the title of your “book”, and it most likely being “How To Kiss Commie Arse”.

What is it with 90% of your insults relating to oral-anal shenanigans? (Yes – another truncated post. But it doesn’t take much of your billious blather to accurately represent the whole.) I am scribbling away at a book (a piece of fiction, thanks for asking), but I intend it to have a wider audience than you and your fellow arse fetishists.

I certainly hope my income tax is being squandered on subsidizing your degenerate lifestyle of bullemic coprophilia.

  39. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

  40. Russell Brown (394) Says:

For DPF, not because I am in any ay a spokesman for Freeview, just because I’m a geek for this stuff”

TVNZ should have the programme both in one piece and as segments via its website, so you won’t need to YouTube it. I’d <i>like</i> it to be embeddable, but that’s a conversation I haven’t had yet.

I gather that late next month you’ll start seeing (a) Freeview Aerial boxes, possibly HD, and (b) widescreen TVs with Freeview decoders built in.

The Freeview consortium’s role is in very large part to do with the supply chain, and its biggest test starts next month. They really have to have that stuff prominently at high street retail at the right time.

I was a bit concerned — like, where’s the advertising? — but I have been assured by someone who ought to know that it’s all in hand.

I understand the frustration about the channels not being on Sky, but the flipside to that is the much lighter hand on private digital broadcasters compared to most other countries. Colin Peacock had quite a good item on it on Mediawatch this morning. Although I still don’t like the all-intervention-all-the-time approach of the Australian government. Apart from anything else, it hasn’t produced major consumer uptake of digital TV.

  41. NeilM (326) Says:

“Craig will be writing, and DPF is so on the list of panelists.”

The Achilles heal of liberals – tolerance and interest in the views of others.

But are either of these two in the least photogenic?

  42. philu (12,457) Says:

    ‘sensing idiocy’ is quite good..redbaiter..

    possibly your ‘best line’..ever..

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  43. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“What is it with 90% of your insults relating to oral-anal shenanigans?”

Can’t you ever write anything here that isn’t 1) Mainstream media hollywood junk TV / movie star in origin or 2) typified by language or suggestions that is/ are only tolerated because you’re, as a queer, given special treatment?

  44. philu (12,457) Says:

    their mums think so..

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  45. philu (12,457) Says:

can’t wait for the publicity shots/posters..

is ‘russell’..(what’s with that ..?..dpf.?..wot..!..like ‘bono’..?..)

    the ‘glamorous’ one/the ‘bait’/'eye-candy’….?

    so..we have ‘russell’..as labours’ ‘man’..

and ‘farrar’..(try it dpf..!..you might like it..!)..

    as nationals’ ‘man’

so..we have the ‘trouts’ of the tweedle-dee and tweedledum parties..

    ‘controlling’ the dialogue/debate..

  46. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“I’d like to say I’m looking forward to seeing it, because I think NZ needs more not less shows which focus and can be critical of the media.”

Whilst Air America goes broke, and TV shows by your usual gang of leftist political commentators are all bottom of the ratings, what does TVNZ bring viwers, but another TV show hosted by a leftist.

  47. philu (12,457) Says:

and both of you from the chris trotter ‘eat anything/everything that moves!’ school of gastronomy..

you’ll really have a ‘grip on’/solutions to what we are facing..

    eh..?

    ‘more dairy farming..!’..

  49. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

If it wasn’t for dairy farming Phil, you’d be living under a corrugated iron shelter at your local rubbish tip with all of the other unproductive losers.

  50. Manolo (6,513) Says:

I will not have a bar of Russell Brown, who is nothing but an evangelist for socialism, all conducted, of course, from his comfortable perch (ala Trotter). His credibility is next to nothing.

Whoar, do us a favor and retire yourself from the gene pool, will you? :-)

  51. philu (12,457) Says:

    eh..?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  55. Tamaki Resident (66) Says:

Well Manolo, from what I know about Russell, his perch is not all that comfortable. You may disagree with what he says, but at least he says it in a reasoned way, and is a lot more credible than a lot of bloggers in the NZ blogosphere.

  56. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“who else is funny/makes you laugh/smile..?”

Not you phil, never have never will. You constantly mistake your own egocentricity for cleverness. Nothing at all amusing about presumptuous low IQ parasitical dumbfucks who are simultaneously full of themselves. And stop whoring your fucken clapped out kiddie radio station you shameless dipshit. Who gives a fuck what’s playing on it, I wouldn’t listen if you offered me money..

  57. philu (12,457) Says:

um..!..i don’t think i am programming for you redbaiter..

  59. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“150 the last time it was measured..darling..”

What crap, and if it ever was so measured, it would have been with a handicap of at least 100. ..and don’t call me darling you bi-sexual freak..

  60. philu (12,457) Says:

    heh-heh..!

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  61. philu (12,457) Says:

    are you a man redbater..?

  63. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Just think phil, if you hadn’t been so short in the brains and balls department, you might be out there running a real station instead of your infantile little attempt at wish fulfilment. Then you might even have been pulling in a decent salary, and able to afford to give your kids a decent education. But hell, what would that all matter to a lazy egocentric self indulgent arsehole like you???

  64. Russell Brown (394) Says:

I will not have a bar of Russell Brown, who is nothing but an evangelist for socialism, all conducted, of course, from his comfortable perch (ala Trotter). His credibility is next to nothing.

I am not worthy. But in my defence, let me say that I my own company, I take advertising from corporations and I’ve been the MPA business columnist of the year for the past three years.

    Please, admire my cunning disguise.

  65. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

    “Please, admire my cunning disguise.”

So- how many times have you voted for ACT?

  66. philu (12,457) Says:

my boy is going to an excellent school..

    and doing very well..

    thanks for asking..

    eh..?

but a serious answer to your question..redbaiter..

i feel privileged to have not been polluted by the dictates of commercial radio..

(and am forever grateful to bfm for giving me the opportunities/training i got..)

this means that i have no knowledge of programming dictates..

    (and would ignore them..anyway..)

the music selection on whoar fm one is from the 1930′s to today..

and ducks off down many highways and byeways..

    therefor..guaranteed ‘surprises’..

and with my scribbling..once again that was mostly learnt writing for radio..and academic learning..

    no formal ‘journalism’..as such..

    once again..

i am grateful that i can write for myself..

    and for the ‘ear’..

and not to the dictates of some subeditor/institutional mores..

    ’tis very liberating..

so..i’ll just plug away at the path i’ve chosen..

and we’ll see what ‘turns up’…

    eh..?

    and..thanks for asking..!

    eh..?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  67. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“my boy is going to an excellent school..”

Phil, the political activities of people like you have made that an extremely unlikely event. Your child will be going to a government run socialist indoctrination camp masquerading as a school, because you, a selfish no hoper who prefers to sit on his fat arse smoking dope all day, wouldn’t have the means to send him anywhere else anyway…

    Phil- I don’t care you narcissistic dumbfuck…!!!!

  68. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

I don’t care about the rest of your self obsessed shit that is..

  69. Andrew W (1,629) Says:

Ahh, our mutual friend Redbaiter, once again bringing laughter and merriment to others at kiwiblog. Cheer Red.

  70. the deity formerly known as nigel6888 (818) Says:

Russell Brown, on state TV, running the same old…TV 7 which requires the punter to shell out for a box, when no-one wants to.

shrugs, don’t care, no-one will watch it anyway, and frankly no-one needs to, the playlist is already set:

yadayadayada, bushhitler, amerikkaaa, ageing git pretends to be hip, clinton is great, nz Kulture, global warming, arselicking Helen Clark, etc etc.

Actually on second thoughts, its probably a good idea to give all the middle aged lefties their own playpen. Maybe if they could get Noelle whatsername, kim hill and laidlaw to join wussell, the rest of us could have nat rad back and running some politically neutral lines for a change.

sorry to hear you’ll be involved Craig, still I hope the gig works out for you.

  71. philu (12,457) Says:

    he/she’s fuckin’ pumping/frothing tonight..

    go on..!

    poke it..!

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  72. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Laughter and merriment?? I’m fucken serious arsehole. Why can’t you be like all the other leftists and complain about Redbaiter’s language. Then, like them, you can turn on your TV and enjoy a rerun of “Pulp Fiction” or perhaps one of the other hit movies on this list-

  73. Andrew W (1,629) Says:

    Sorry Red,

Red you’ve been a bad, bad boy! Smack, smack.

    Happy now?

  74. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

    Sue, go get him….

  75. philu (12,457) Says:

    i don’t complain about your language..redbaiter..

i think it is great that you are a ‘true’ voice of the rightwing..

    ’tis very illuminating..

    for us all..

    your tooth ‘n claw capitalisim..

    capitalism drenched in prejudices/bigotry..

the rightwing with the pre-election mask ripped off..

    “shine on etc..”

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  76. Andrew W (1,629) Says:

Like Stalin was the true voice of socialism.

  77. PaulL (4,560) Says:

Phil, the pot costs you about 50-60 points, even if you ever were measured at 150. My usual experience is that people with an IQ that measures that high don’t really tell people about it (except for the Mensa wankers) – it should be obvious by how they conduct themselves. I don’t see it in your ramblings.

  78. philu (12,457) Says:

    he started it..!

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  80. Andrew W (1,629) Says:

Phil, sorry, but those ‘Tickle’ IQ tests don’t really count.

  81. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Russell, here’s the guts- I don’t care if you’re a leftist, and I wish you well with your show. I don’t really care that much about objectivity. What I care about is deceit, meaning the pretense to objectivity. If I thought there was ever a snowball’s chance in hell that you might concede that point, all I would ask is that you make your political allegiances clear.

The FOX model has brought success to that network. They have shed the pretense to objectivity. They have commentators who identify themselves as Conservative (Hannity for example) and others who identify as Liberal (Holmes or Geraldo for example). Fair and balanced.

Meanwhile, at TVNZ, we have wall to wall leftists deceitfully posing as objective commentators. Just old time soviet style bullshit. It don’t wash any more.

  82. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Holmes..!! For fuck’s sake.. why would I invoke the name of, (when it comes to political deceit) one of the worst offenders in NZ’s broadcasting history?? Colmes- I meant Colmes.

  83. Ben Wilson (520) Says:

Is there a special name for a thread of sour grapes?

  84. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

sorry to hear you’ll be involved Craig, still I hope the gig works out for you.

When your signature is on my pay cheques, you can insult my intelligence and professional integrity to your heart’s content, within office hours. Otherwise, leave the condescending bullshit to Baiter. (Who, I note, is now referring to himself in the third person.)

Can’t you ever write anything here that isn’t 1) Mainstream media hollywood junk TV / movie star in origin or 2) typified by language or suggestions that is/ are only tolerated because you’re, as a queer, given special treatment?

OK, I had to quote this gem in full. For fuck’s sake, Redbaiter, you’re the one who is constantly going on about ‘arse-lickers’ and ‘arse-kissing’. Not getting any at home you felch-pig?

  85. karl meads (7) Says:

hey, im new. Can anyone tell me what I am/not allowed to say here?
Also, why do I keep getting a stats.govt.nz login pass flashing up on my screen?

  86. philu (12,457) Says:

    ‘tickle iq tests’

    heh..!

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  87. Richard Hurst (610) Says:

Eh, well another bit of semi- Left wing bias media won’t make much difference, especially when you have to buy a receiver to actually watch it which automatically limits its audience but TVNZ have got to fill the static with something.
Mediawatch was alright whenever I had the time to listen in, I don’t these days. The trouble was Mediawatch did tend to be a bit pompous and a bit predictable in the view it would take on any media topic which made it less interesting and a tad dull.
As for all this personal abuse, I think you all need the ‘Mallard solution’ offline.

  88. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“For fuck’s sake, Redbaiter, you’re the one who is constantly going on about ‘arse-lickers’ and ‘arse-kissing’. Not getting any at home you felch-pig?”

You know very well the context. Its you and your fucked in the head sexual attitudes that cause you to turn every such reference into something you call a fetish you sick weak try hard degenerate. If it wasn’t politically correct to suck up to homosexuals, you would have been banned long ago for the vulgar and common obscenities you post here in lieu of wit.

  89. philu (12,457) Says:

    craig can’t be banned now..

    he has joined ‘the gatekeepers’..

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  90. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

You know very well the context.

Yes, you’re a hateful twit who delights in accusing others of his worse flaws. Your macho posturing would be hilarious if it wasn’t quite so pathetic, and prone to collapse into baby-ish whimpering the moment it’s stood up to.

Try posting a single comment that’s not entirely twisted around your poisonous hate, envy, spite and true narcissism.

As for that last sentence, fat with pompous hypocrisy, I’ll note the two things it has in common with the rear end of the moral high horse you’re riding. It’s full of shit, and the closer you get the worse it stinks.

I imagine the only reason DPF puts up with you, is that he has a particularly black sense of humour. There’s certainly no wit or insight in your vapid ravings.

  91. ISeeRed (220) Says:

I tend to agree with your views ,Redbaiter, but mate, you’re going to get yourself banned.

  92. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“I imagine the only reason DPF puts up with you, is that he has a particularly black sense of humour.”

Perhaps he does have that, but the reality is that although I might swear a bit now and again, I don’t bother with the vulgar and degenerate sexual allusions that commonly characterize your messages.

  93. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“the moment it’s stood up to.”

So that’s what all this frantic over the top overblown bullshit is meant to be?? Hope you write a little better for Russell’s show.

  94. PaulL (4,560) Says:

The funny bit is that you have to buy the box. People with that kind of money to drop on a piece of entertainment kit tend to be a bit more right leaning. Surely it makes sense to understand your market when you create a product – why would TVNZ get a lefty to do a show? Something like Fox would be more likely to go over well.

  95. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

Surely it makes sense to understand your market when you create a product – why would TVNZ get a lefty to do a show?

    PaulL:

OK, so what’s the real problem here — TVNZ a hot bed of political bias, or just not “biased” enough in an ideologically congenial direction? (Everyone seems to feel no need to see this project before deciding its going to be a Labour Party infomercial. Guess you wouldn’t see the joke in Sydney Smith’s saw “I never read a book before reviewing it. It prejudices one so.”) You can’t really have it both ways.

Something like Fox would be more likely to go over well.

Anyone know how Fox is rating for Prime/Sky?

  96. philu (12,457) Says:

    ‘chavignon pursed-lips’….?

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  97. the deity formerly known as nigel6888 (818) Says:

so craig, you really are back on the plantation aren’t you. Amazing how a paycheck can change a belief system isnt it?

and, yes this time it is intended to be “condescending bullshit” get over yourself.

disappointed. I think you need to have a bit of a look in the mirror about how you behave on here too. You used to post with a bit of civility, but your style has gone off bigtime.

Still I guess being the token angry gay rightie worked for andy sullivan huh?

  98. philu (12,457) Says:

“..a lazy egocentric self indulgent arsehole like you???..”

    i’ll nod the head to ‘egocentric’..and ‘self-indulgant..

    but ‘lazy’..!

    whoar..!

here it is 6.16 am on a monday morning..

and i already have 14 freshly-baked stories over at whoar..

    for you to ‘dip into’..

    lazy..!!

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

  99. Andrew W (1,629) Says:

“You used to post with a bit of civility, but your style has gone off bigtime.”

Sadly deity’s right, Red’s gutter comments are entertaining like those C grade movies that are so bad they’re hilarious, but they’re still not something to try to emulate.

Though the occassional biting comment from Craig’s a gem.

  100. Dave Mann (859) Says:

Russell, thanks for the info. I actually only understood a part of it due to my lack of tech savvy, but I got the general gist, cheers

Redbaiter and Philu, you are both idiotic fuckwits who do nothing at all to add to the debate. All you do is phase the comments section with meaningless static. This is not a teenage chatroom.

DPF, could you please consider banning these two for at least a while, please? I love to read comments from a range of views, but the mindless bullshit of these two feral drongos can’t really be counted as ‘views’, can it?

  101. llew (1,532) Says:

“So- how many times have you voted for ACT?”

Hundreds of times. Until he dropped Krystal.

  102. PaulL (4,560) Says:

Craig: you’re a bit defensive there. It was my second post on this thread, but the first was about PhilU’s IQ , so I’m not really having it both ways unless you see PhilU having a low IQ and your show needing to be a bit rightwing as being mutually exclusive.

You really should know better than to tar everyone on a comment thread with the same brush.

  103. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

so craig, you really are back on the plantation aren’t you. Amazing how a paycheck can change a belief system isnt it?

Ah, Nigel, so I’m the Vicar of Bray now? (Google it, folks.) I don’t think my disdain for both the loony left and the rabid right has fundamentally changed over the years, but let’s put that aside for the moment. When I was approached to contribute to PA Radio by Russell, I only had these editorial strings attached: 1) I had to fit a three minute slot, 2) meet statutory broadcast standards that wouldn’t land everyone involved in front of the BSA, and, 3) take reasonable precautions to avoid defamation or contempt of court charges. Otherwise, I had a totally free hand. I’m sure the results wouldn’t satisfy the Sonics and Redbaiters of the world. I can live with that.

There’s sure been a couple that Russell has very strongly disagreed with, but not editorially interfered with. So, yes, I’ve come to trust Brown based on experience.

And if my participation in Media 7 isn’t conducted on the exactly the same terms, I’ll say farewell (and forgo the whore’s shilling) without a backward glance. Won’t be too shy about saying why, either.

disappointed. I think you need to have a bit of a look in the mirror about how you behave on here too. You used to post with a bit of civility, but your style has gone off bigtime.

Meh… Sorry if I hurt your feelings, Nigel, but I don’t see why I should show the slightest civility to anyone who calls me a liar and a whore without foundation. Don’t swallow it from the likes of Sonic, Ghostie and Tane. I most certainly don’t take it from Baiter. What makes you so special?

  104. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

Craig: you’re a bit defensive there.

Well, sorry about that because I thought you made a couple of intriguing assertions I wanted you to expand on. “Being exposed to stuff I don’t like” is a pretty piss poor test for political bias — just look at the Sub-Standard Left who believe the whole Press Gallery are John Key’s tame bitches.

  105. PaulL (4,560) Says:

Craig, you’re putting words in my mouth now. Again, you should know better.

All I said was that the target audience for the show are likely to be right leaning, and more likely to appreciate a show with a bias a bit to the right. If they want to be exposed to stuff they don’t like they already have one news, three news, and national radio, they don’t need this new show for that.

Actually if you include things I don’t like for taste reasons, as well as political reasons, you have almost all of commerical TV, but that is a different question.

  106. Craig Ranapia (1,890) Says:

All I said was that the target audience for the show are likely to be right leaning…

And the basis for that claim? I truly don’t have a clue if Sky has bothered doing any market research about the political leanings of the folks who subscribe to their services. Might be interesting, but I don’t see where your assertion is coming from.

Nor do I see how anyone can complain TVNZ is somehow pushing a political agenda in the programmes it commissions, then say it should be showing a bias you find more agreeable. Sorry, but that’s how I read your comment.

  107. PaulL (4,560) Says:

    You’re reading wrong then.

  108. Russell Brown (394) Says:

All I said was that the target audience for the show are likely to be right leaning, and more likely to appreciate a show with a bias a bit to the right.

Not everything thinks in the same binary terms as you, Paul.

According to the Nielsen demographics, more than half of our readers earn more than $100k, placing us (on the last breakout I saw) 7th amongst the Top 10 NZ websites by high household income, very close to NBR and Sharechat. Around 5% of our readers earn more than $250k per annum in household income.

By your lights, they should all be penniless, raving Marxists — but the world doesn’t work like that.

  109. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

“By your lights, they should all be penniless, raving Marxists — but the world doesn’t work like that.”

They’re probably all overpaid government employees, cronyists at SOEs etc. After all, with the government playing such a large part in commerce, its difficult for anyone to escape its poisonous tentacles.

  110. Sam Finnemore (2) Says:

““So- how many times have you voted for ACT?”

Hundreds of times. Until he dropped Krystal.”

    Best Kiwiblog comment ever.

  111. llew (1,532) Says:

They’re probably all overpaid government employees, cronyists at SOEs etc.

    Not all of them.

  112. llew (1,532) Says:

    Best Kiwiblog comment ever.

    Thank you :)

  113. PhilBest (5,042) Says:

Someone asked back there if anyone had the figures for Kiwis who watch “Fox”. That would be interesting.

But someone needs to do an NZ-specific equivalent to “Fox”. I suppose the economies of scale just wouldn’t be there in a little place like NZ, unlike in the US.

It is encouraging that on Kiwiblog there are obviously so many others who have avenues of getting more honest info than the lefty spin in our MSM.

Something I’d LOVE to see happen in NZ:

“Rather’s Ruin and the rise of the pajamahadeen”

    http://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=42687&mid=304288

(You work out who is NZ’s equivalent to Dan Rather)

  114. PaulL (4,560) Says:

You obviously couldn’t create a full-time channel like Fox. But you could produce a one hour show or so that had a different spin.

I certainly am not suggesting that Russel’s new show isn’t exactly what I want – what I would like is a show that doesn’t pretend to be independent, but rather that provides balance by showing opposing viewpoints. And that doesn’t mean having someone mid-left who gets lots of airplay, and then someone on the raving fringe of the right. It means two solid individuals providing good points and getting to the crux of whatever issue – dealing with the difference in viewpoint rather than the headlines and sound bites.

If this show achieves that then I am happy. Failing that, at least I’d like to see a show with right wing bias, rather than another show with left wing bias. Ideally there would be a show with no bias, but I’m not sure that is actually possible.

  115. Rex Widerstrom (4,547) Says:

    PaulL says:

what I would like is a show that doesn’t pretend to be independent, but rather that provides balance by showing opposing viewpoints

Count me in as a viewer of such a show too. A show without bias probably isn’t possible any more, so the way to achieve balance is to fairly present opposing viewpoints within the same show. What annoys me is when a channel presents a solid hour of propaganda in a prime time slot and then (after all the furore has died down and everyone’s forgotten about it) runs a counterpoint at 11.30 pm on a Sunday, telling the BSA that it’s “balanced” things by so doing, and thus not even copping the usual schoolmarmish ineffective lecture.

Personally, I’m prepared to grant Russell the benefit of the doubt and opine that he’ll strive for balance in this way – he is, I believe, a professional before he’s anything else – but his efforts to do so will stand or fall on who the “right wing” commentators are. If, as Red and others complain, they’re too ready to compromise, then objectivity will be lost.

Hopefully I’ll be able to view it online, and if so I’ll pass further judgement then.

  116. RRM (4,639) Says:

Do I detect an element of bitterness that it’s not “The Farrar Hour” that’s starting soon on TVNZ 7, with Russell Brown merely one of its contributors?

When they’re interviewing each other on TV, if it’s a slow news day they could have a challenge to see who can slip the most Kiwiblog words into the conversation, like “Redbaiter” “Liarbour”, “Socialist propaganda”, “Leftist lies” etc etc etc.

  117. kaykaybee (88) Says:

    RRM

Nobody will bother with the TVNZ digi BOX, whether it’s Pamela and Tommy 24 hour ‘get down and dirty’ fest, Farrar’s ‘No more hard Labour’, or Russel Brown being ever so cringingingly rational, and reflecting pleasantly on luvvly juvvly NZ society under the Clark regime.

That was the point of David’s post, nothing more. Buy your own box and feel free to post us all links to the website or podcast, as 99% of us will be watching SKY.

    The box is an ass.

  118. PhilBest (5,042) Says:

Now this is an interesting point. Don’t we have TV presenters and Newspaper Op-Ed writers who spice THEIR language with pejorative prejudices from the Left, about, say, George W. Bush? But the Left finds any sort of addressing the imbalance, even on Farrar, or talkback Radio, (nowhere near the clout of MSM) repugnant.

On the “One-hour show” thing, note the “Glenn Beck Show” on CNN. Not the sort of thing CNN (“Certainly Not the News”) would have dreamed of putting on until they saw market share going to Fox.
