General Election Open Thread

November 26th, 2011 at 7:00 pm by David Farrar

You can comment away now. I’ll try and post the odd update but my primary commitment tonight is commentary on TV One. Also doing a bit for NewstalkZB and Radio Live and the OU/Herald Online coverage.

Billed as the world’s most expensive pen, this jaw-droppingly OTT writing instrument will set you back a cool €1,000,000 – but what’s a whopping great pile of money amongst pens? Pull this baby out on your yacht and colleagues won’t know whether to gawp in awe or grab it and scarper.

Labour winning is worse for the country as a whole, but a Labour win is better for me financially due to the nature of my business.

I put country first and still hope that national wins, but, I still win if labour win .

The simple fact is that the pollsters have been wrong all along and have been using the polls to achieve a self-fulfilling prophesy.

The reality is that National will get 45-46% and New Zealand First will squeak in above 5%. The pollsters don’t take into account people who don’t want to be polled, don’t own a home phone, live in a home, flat with others and so forth. Labour will hit 30% without a doubt and the Greens will pick up an extra MP after specials are counted.

Let’s see if Epsom Labour voters ruin Act.

Well, I’ve have my ginger beer and I’m off to bed. I can’t help thinking, tho, the Key and the nats have got to develope a game breaker in the next 18 months.

They need to limit asset sales so that there cannot be any overseas ownership and they have to do that early to prove that it works.

Key has been on the back foot till now — recession, earthquakes etc. He may be a steady as you go type of guy but that is not going to get him a third term. We need some action pdq. RMA reform is a definite. The experts have taken over and it is growth industry. There should be much stricter file management than is presently the case – esp early mediation.

Job creation will be the biggest hurdle because the government doesn’t create jobs.

    Good luck to them all.

    Living the dream

Congratulations people, you bought the aspirational middle class dream Key was selling. You didn’t
want the reality Goff was selling and why would you ?

The reality is high unemployment, no jobs, stagnant wages, rising cost of living, NZ’s best and brightest leaving NZ in record numbers, an aging population reliant on welfare, an angry youthful
demographic also reliant on welfare, a property investment boil that needs lancing and a wealth
disparity chasm that will only widen with asset sales.

I mean, who in their right mind wants to face that reality ?…and buy into it, let alone deal with it, when you can live the dream of aspirational middle classiness. You too can come from living in a state house to make a fortune then become Prime Minister. Thats the shit people want to buy into and the shit Key was selling.

And man did we buy it, hook, line and sinker, cos like i said on Dim Post, everyone thinks they’re middle class these days. There is no working class anymore, only the underclass, consisting of the working poor and the unemployed. But no one’s going to admit to being underclass. That’s the fucking nightmare class you read about on the news, committing violent crime, breeding for business and living of charity.

Sure, you may be jobless and poor or scraping to get by, but your parents weren’t and they were middles class so you are too eh ? You just have to keep believing, have faith that Key can keep your dream alive. I mean, you’re a real life wannabe kiwi mum and dad whose better times are just around the corner.

But you know the only trouble with living the dream is, sooner or later you wake up and have to face reality, either by your own choice or by neccessity of someone forcing you to. And don’t you just hate it when the realization dawns on you that the dream you thought you were living was only happening in your mind and for all that time you were just asleep.

sleep tight NZ, don’t let reality bite…Vampires are real !!!

Doesn’t Colin James do television anymore? Didn’t see him on TV1 or TV3.

Great to see Paul Henry rehabilitated and asking John Key questions again on national television.

Does anyone have a screencap of the aforementioned legs? I turned off the TV after Brash’s speech. Nick K – get over it. Go join the Conservative Party if you believe it’s wrong for men to have natural urges.

Immigration and tax breaks for investment in residential property are being cited as the underlying causes of steep increases in the cost of housing over the past decade.

New Zealand now boasts one of the highest rates of home unaffordability in the world as a result of prices rising far faster than incomes, and the government’s Savings Working Group blames that squarely on the policies of successive governments.

Although “the favourable tax treatment of property investment” accounted for about 50% of house price increases between 2001 and 2007, the working group said, there was also strong evidence that rapid swings in immigration brought about price-rise “shocks”.

There was a sharp spike in immigration in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and, said working group committee member Dr Andrew Coleman, it appeared that property prices did not fall anywhere near as greatly when immigration fell again.

The report added that there was little evidence that immigration boosted local incomes. In fact, the need to build roads and schools meant that net migration contributed to the national deficit.

When you see the dwarf narcissist back in you realize that universdal sufferage is a farce.

The upside is Wellington late opening bars will now be regaled with his stories of himself by himself for another three years.

Does this mean that they will now pay the $150,00 back to the NZ taxpayer?

If I put aside me having a wee issue with people that could be considered “corrupt” getting their hands on some institutional levers of power …..

He would be entertaining in that role, I suppose! And may relish acting out like some old fashioned headmaster keeping the young’uns in check. Hell, one day when he’s had a good day of it keeping the MP’s in line, perhaps as the MP’s retire that trade-mark grin will come out again, swooning the heart’s of grannies all around the nation once again, and starts crooning “My Way”. Mind you not sure how he would actually keep up with being fully alert day-after-day after the regular late-night “dinners” at his favorite haunts resume again, but luckily Parliament control the cameras during the daytime and well the rest of the MSM will be hanging out for scraps of entertaining morsels and gossip with him anyways, in fact the boy reporters at TV3 can only rub their hands in glee in what delightful mischief lies ahead for them. ;-)

Does anybody know who the list MP’s are who have lost their seats?

I love the idea that the toxic Sepaloni and the union hack Beaumont are unemployed, now I want to know who has joined them.

Oh…and if you really want a laugh go and wind up the pinko’s over at the standard, they are just about suicidal.

My suggesting was mainly in jest but the thought of Peters having to rule on point of orders rather than making them has a certain wicked pleasure. There is also the problem that National may have that if they appoint a speaker from their ranks this may reduce their majority to a minority (as the speaker doesn’t vote).
