The simple fact is that the pollsters have been wrong all along and have been using the polls to achieve a self-fulfilling prophesy.
The reality is that National will get 45-46% and New Zealand First will squeak in above 5%. The pollsters don’t take into account people who don’t want to be polled, don’t own a home phone, live in a home, flat with others and so forth. Labour will hit 30% without a doubt and the Greens will pick up an extra MP after specials are counted.
Let’s see if Epsom Labour voters ruin Act.

Labour won the Party Vote in the Seven Maori Seats, plus Dunedin North, Mangere, Manukau East, Manurewa, Mt Albert, Mt and Roskill. Every seat in South Island bar one, every North Island seat outside of South Auckland.

Look at the turnout data for individual electorates. It is UP in the biggest Labour seats, and DOWN in the safe Nat seats. Ergo: told by the media that the election was in the bag, Nat supporters stayed home. That is why the result is so close.

Well, I’ve have my ginger beer and I’m off to bed. I can’t help thinking, tho, the Key and the nats have got to develope a game breaker in the next 18 months.
They need to limit asset sales so that there cannot be any overseas ownership and they have to do that early to prove that it works.
Key has been on the back foot till now — recession, earthquakes etc. He may be a steady as you go type of guy but that is not going to get him a third term. We need some action pdq. RMA reform is a definite. The experts have taken over and it is growth industry. There should be much stricter file management than is presently the case – esp early mediation.
Job creation will be the biggest hurdle because the government doesn’t create jobs.

Immigration and tax breaks for investment in residential property are being cited as the underlying causes of steep increases in the cost of housing over the past decade.

There is also the problem that National may have that if they appoint a speaker from their ranks this may reduce their majority to a minority (as the speaker doesn’t vote).
