The major problem the Dame Jenny Shipley and CERA Transition Committee has, is the bureaucratically bloated Christchurch City Council is still severely dysfunctional.

Sadly … Mayor Lianne Dalziel with her new team, where 9 of 13 were replaced at the October 2013 Local Government elections, have achieved very little to date in sorting out the Christchurch Council.

They have yet to sort themselves out.

Clearly the Government is keen to shut down CERA, with its 350 staff ( incorporating 21 in public relations manufacturing progress fiction ) as quickly as possible, following the Sutton / Rennie debacle.

So of necessity, a major part of Dame Jenny Shipley and her teams job will be to ensure the Christchurch Council restructures itself, so that it is capable of performing to an acceptable level.

The smaller units of local government at Waimakariri and Selwyn are in contrast functioning normally.

Do Dame Jenny Shipley and her team have the skills and will to do this essential job ? That’s the big question.

I’d like to debate how generally wonderful it is to live in a country with fully functioning indoor plumbing.

Huh ? I was busy escaping my own existence watching multi-million dollar houses on TV – and something that should not at all be permitted in the script shattered the fantasy in spectacular fashion. The two million odd dollar Brazillian home occupied by an American woman shoe designer has one deal-breaking fatal flaw; flushing loo paper in parts of Brazil results in blockage. So they put it in bathroom bins. Game over – I’m out. How unspeakably third world is *that* – hell-loooh ?? And is nothing on TV safe from the gag factor ? I will forever know vividly that somewhere on earth this first-third world juxtaposition exists. Great – hahaha. Have a nice day and don’t forget to downsick. I mean downtick.

Yesterday I read the December/January issue of Investigate magazine and I must say it was quite a good read. There are few better investigative journalists in NZ than Ian Wishart and he covers real issues which our lamestream media refuse to cover.

This issue had a great article from Kiwiblogs David Garret skewering Tariana Turias abuse of the English language by stating that gangs are another form of “Whanau”.

Another good article that examined claims that Hawaiians were actually the first to arrive on NZ shores and that academics refuse to do any work in this area as it would go against the myth of Maori being the first settlers.

However perhaps their best article was by someone called Amy Brooke who dissected a North & South article that claimed the NZ school system is “world class” when anyone who has had any experience dealing with products of this school system know this is far from the truth as we produce so many illiterate morons.

She highlights how the syllabus introduced by neo-marxists under the “long march through the institutions” marginalised intellectual rigour and introduced anti-conservative and anti-academic subjects such as conflict resolution; the promotion of homosexual and lesbian “choices”; pro-Maori, radicalized “indigenous” life-styles touted as superior; anti-colonialism,; reverse racism; feminism; and the advocacy of “non-judgmental” teenage sexual activity.

She then examines how the educational departments have been stuffed with placemen who constantly tell ministers that our education is “world-class” when nothing can be further from the truth as Kiwi children continue to be bombarded with feel-good, think-bad initiatives

Are you, perhaps, praising ACT, The Maori party and United for having the energy and foresight to WIN an electorate seat rather than beg for handouts from the current government (who incidentally have recognised those three parties hard work by including them in government)?

Indeed the situation in New Zealand is getting worse with only 0.4% of people supporting ACT … they always said you have to be intelligent and sensible to vote ACT 🙂 So when Roger was talking of 15% that was pipe dreams .. there just isn’t that number of I&S people in the country.

Britain has passed France to become the world’s fifth biggest economy because it’s including prostitution and drugs in its GDP while France refuses to.

How accurate can the estimates for prostitution and drugs be? UK puts its drugs at 6.6 billion pounds and prostitution at 5.7 billion.

Meanwhile China upped its GDP estimate for the year by about 400 billion NZ dollars.

Fair bit of smoke and mirrors all round.

Local rumor has it that the airplane crash in Raglan harbour yesterday was a desperate attempt by Crim.com to flee the country.
Locals reported seeing a giant blob floating out of the wreck and out to sea.
It has not been seen since.

PM Key certainly has many fine attributes, but we do need to see sober assessments of what he has achieved to date in dealing with the structural issues.

These need to be measured against what Mr Key made clear in the lead-up to the 2008 election … and as outlined soon after to Mary Kissel of the WSJ with YOU CAN’T SPEND YOUR WAY OUT OF A CRISIS …

So let me get this straight – the reason that British “GDP” has overtaken French “GDP” is because the British counted sex and drugs as being part of GDP?

So if I bang the wife then nothing happens to GDP but if I bang the neighbours missus, roll over and share a joint before giving her $100 then the economy has improved?

Reminds a bit of the likes of Stupidboy and Mookymild telling us how Obamacare was causing American “GDP” to surge. Their rationale was that the more $$$ Americans spent on healthcare, the more the eCONomy “grew”.

Their logic must be that the more ill people become, the healthier the economy and the greater the productivity.

That means nothing. They did not get in and it is unlikely they will even run in 2017.

Colin looked up the NZF 2011 manifesto and copied it with only a few changes and then called Winston a liar. That show he had no political nous. Very few politicians are totally honest. John Boscawen would have been the most honest.

I predict that Colin will not run again in 2017.

If you think I am wrong tell me how many of the top 10 candidates from 2014 would even consider standing in 2017.

An odd statement. Whoever got here first and established a population were the first settlers. They weren’t Maori until they established their own identity here.

Wherever the first Maori came from (described as Hawaiki which has similar versions elsewhere, regarded as from Eastern Polynesia) they were the first settlers. Because it is much further away than other islands Hawaii seems unlikely.

Debate it? Well …ok. Our society has been in moral, social, and spiritual freefall (see Kiwiblog, 2003 – 2014), since indoor plumbing became widespread. Outdoor plumbing developed many important traits that people lack today. First, it taught resoluteness – a willingness to get the job done no matter how averse the circumstances. Second, it fostered self control – learning that sometimes it’s worth delaying one’s gratification. Third, it taught people that sometimes you must sacrifice comfort for a greater public good. Finally, it promoted a general greater hardiness of both body and spirit.
The switch from cut-up newspaper to purpose-designed toilet paper has, of course, led to a decline in literacy, but that’s a slightly different topic.

Thanks bringbackdemocracy, that’s useful to know.

The Conservatives should be happy enough with that poll result. But what they won’t be happy about is that the Herald didn’t mention them – getting publicity and staying relevant is going to be their biggest challenge between now and 2017. If this was just an oversight or one-time choice they’re fine. But if it reflects an editorial decision they’re not significant enough to report on, that would be a big concern for them.

There are certainly links to Hawaii PG. I remember reading a name that featured in the early EC settlement which was highly likely to be a derivative of that of a Hawaiian chief and explorer. That Maori originally came from some where else is not questioned, nor that there is no credible evidence they were not the first settlers. I think the name I recall was Toi, and it may have been the name of one of the canoes. Many written ancestry lines feature Toi, most of course which would have been taken from the oral history. There are the names of perhaps mythological tribes of very short people who settled inland on the East Coast.

At least one UK journalist knows what’s going on. And he asks an interesting question: why isn’t SA and the other OPEC producers cutting production? They’re losing billions a day, and they keep pumping. I have one possible answer to that and if its true its an interesting tell.

Morning Hugh.
The shift to the right is utterly inevitable. More education, less tolerance of control, people like Freedom to live their own lives. A Viking trait I must say and the rest are taking a longtime to catchup. If we look at Europe and Scandinavia then the influence of Muslim immigration is beginning to rile the natives at last.
Was looking at some vid’s last night about Sweden. Came across them by chance. The comments on youtube relating to the Muslims in Sweden indicate that many Swede’s are really pissed at their socialist leaders. They are moving right as are the Dutch. The French will go bust when the Arabs can’t pay their bills and I see their employment rate for 25 and unders is now a whopping 25+%.
The Arabs in Saudi are up against that as well with a huge unemployed under 25 and getting restless.
Italy is a cot case. I see the State there is going to take over Europes biggest Steel mill. the problem being that once in a job no one can be sacked, removed unless they want to leave. So the youth there are very unemployed. 43% in fact.
There’s a bunch of problems rearing their ugly heads for the socialists and the only other option is for a move to freedom and right wing policies.

China and Russia becoming good mates once more and that doesn’t end well for Europe. The Russians despise the Europeans (and why wouldn’t they as they have been attacked on their own soil at least five times by the Krauts and the Frogs and Pomms.).

Any pollie in this country that ignores these two is nuts. We have long traded with both and we should be working with the Russians as fast as we can go. Tell the EEC to get stuffed.

So yes a move to the right is the way we will go. and before the likes of the crying socialists start ( Milky that means you), we are not heartless bastards and we do support the need to help those that cannot help themselves. Its the big % of those that can and won’t/don’t that pisses us off.

It is encouraging that the article has got over 12k+ shares which indicates that despite our pessimism of the growing idiocracy that is devouring the West, there are plenty of people awake to the truth and are able to see past all of the spin and obfuscation of the MSM.

Peter Hitchens book “The abolition of Liberty” remains one of the best books I’ve read. I also enjoyed his book “The Cameron delusion” which examined is just another wolf in sheeps clothing working for a party called “The Conservatives”.

It’s almost like the Herald (which is owned by a for-profit corporation) doesn’t like parties that support free enterprise and business.

I find it hard to understand how a privately owned media company can be pro-socialist (cognitive dissonance, anyone?) (Or maybe, as a prudent business, they have no choice but to pander to the mindset of their reader base.)

Going on Jenny Shipley’s disastrous past record, I think the outcome isn’t going to be a genuinely workable, or democratic one. This is very much a job for the boys /(girls if they must) appointment.

Like Ruth Richards, she was programmed by the NZBR and her interests lie with power, wealth and status.

I wonder what part the Chinese are going to play in all this ?…

I tend to believe Amy Brooke’s article, despite it being tediously long, becuase I hear as I listen to the Concert programme evidence of the results. I assume the Concert programme to be the least likely to fall foul of modern slackness despite in its effort to maintain increase its audience it includes a lot of rubbish and crap as opposed to classical programming.

The evidence is in the audibility of its announcers with the older members being hearable as they were educated to speak properly in their younger days while so many of the younger crop are completely inaudable as they mumble their way through obviously strange links written for them or picked up from programme notes on the CDs .

So that is why I see merit in Amy’s article and I also found the following article on the ‘Big C’ very interesting and telling though fortunately not affected except financially by it.

The Hawaians say that their ancestry goes back to Tahiti.
The Hawaian islands were populated by polynesian peoples from Tahiti, and return voyages were made often.
The Maori say that their ancestors came from Hawaiki – which some researchers have identified as Raiatea ( I think from memory).

But many small groups of people arrived at widely differing times. Sure, there were the large ocean-going multihulls, like Takitmu and Arawa, Mata-atua etc., but they left at different times from widely divergent places. For example, Takitmu laft from Takitimu beach in Rarotonga; I knoe a local family – whanau 😉 – who are descedenets of the Takitimu whaka who have been back to Raro and traced their relatives there through the verbal history.

Often, a group of fishermen in their canoes in – say – Tonga, were blown of course in a storm and survived to be washed up on our shores.

And there was Kupe, the navigaotr and explorer who came and left people here to populate the place, and returned back to Hawaiiki from Hokianga – the place of departure.

Some is fact wreathed in legend, some is pure fable – but much is true history. After all, the earliest were groups that we now arguably call Mori-ori frm the original small migration, and say 200 years later, more arrived. But you will get as many opinions as history.

But who is that red-haired “tribe” – with very few descendents left – who have fair skin and a different language that have been reported on recently, living around the King Country – Taranaki area? Even many Moari say there were people here before them.

Many questions and few answers, and as another question is answered, it presents more questions. If our liberal history-twisting civil servants would get their heads out of their arses and really start looking at the few remaining artifacts and remnants of a culture that was pre-maori the better off the country will be.

But the Judge may take into account the mittigating factor that all his land was stolen 200 years ago.

For the 4th time this year, Brendan McCullum made my day, what a great Boxing Day watching the cricket in Christchurch from across the ditch. BBQ, beer and Baz, I’m a simple kind of man really, when all I need to have one of the best days of the year is those 3 things.

Over 1100 runs in one calendar year, and 5 runs away from going past 200 4 times. He also would have broken Astle’s record easily which is quite something when you consider that innings in 2002. I love good hard tight test cricket, but I also love the rare occasions when NZ completely rips apart a team in such a short period of time. Sri Lanka was in complete disarray in both the bowling and fielding once Baz got going.

Now for Boult and Southee to continue their progress as one of the best opening attacks in the world…

Have thought the same about the education system for a long time. Amy has covered it well.
What gets me is that when we have a National Government we do not get Ministers who can see through all the BS shoved in front of them by advisors and consultants or they are not competent enough to step up and make the tough decisions that are required to turn education around. In other words ignoring advice and making sound decisions .
Maybe just too scared of the unions?

Often, a group of fishermen in their canoes in – say – Tonga, were blown of course in a storm and survived to be washed up on our shores.

There is one hell of a lot of very empty and angry ocean between NZ and Tonga.
It is highly unlikely that any arrival was such an accident it would take many months probably even years to drift that far.
If such unfortunates had any means of making way they would have soon noticed the change in latitude and steered north not south.

EAD something I read the other day I know you’ll appreciate even if no-one else does is the reason SA keeps pumping.

According to the article the US convinced them five years ago to start fracking so as of a few months ago they’ve been pumping high-pressure sea water into the right places and now the Saudis have to pump lest the remaining oil in proximity become contaminated, so it’s use it or lose it.

I haven’t bothered yet to go beyond the: that’s an interesting possibility phase, but if true it’s interesting what it indicates isn’t it. Not just the CIA-Big Business connection in pursuit of US interests in this case the Big Oil companies, but it also illustrates the pre-planning involved in the destruction of the Russian economy.

It’s one of those things that if the West really did believe its own bullshit then you’d think at least one major news network would bother to investigate since if true – that the American oil companies did indeed do precisely that and that’s easily verifiable since there would be thousands of very angry Saudis some of whom surely would be willing to break Omerta notwithstanding the probable wrath of the Mabaheth – if true, that would blow some myths about the West wide open.

But of course no-one will bother to do that, will they.

And the sheeple happily baa and bleat in the green green meadow bathed in sunshine and content.

EAD: What is it about the Swedish culture that meekly accepts being jackbooted by the Muslim aligned government? I don’t personally know any Swedish people, so maybe someone who does can answer. Sweden also must be strategically placed considering the number of Muslims who have settled (or is that unsettled) there, because most M.E. people must find the climate atrociously cold. It is however, I suppose, a springboard to the rest of Scandanavia and northern Europe.

I understood that the Maori DNA is proven to travel back to the South East corner of Taiwan.
The existing tribes there have the same DNA.
That would account to the Hawaiian connection to their east, then down to Tahiti, the Cook Islands (who speak Cook Islands Maori) to New Zealand.

A few years ago Winston Peters acknowledged that he was from the Chinese in origin shortly after the DNA proven connection.
One cannot be sure with him whether he was just skyting at the time, as he would say anything he chose to do.

Redbaiter: The Maoriban are indeed powerful in government departments, and none more so than DoC. Those guys in the field are shit scared of offending local iwi, and follow protocol to the letter, even to wearing the obligatory bone carving around their necks. The Waipoua forest remnants embargo is not at all surprising, and I suppose there are other sites similarly sealed off. Why the year 2050 is significant is because by then Maori culture will do longer dominate, and these things will no longer matter.

Then there is the matter of Taiwanese descent, well considering they had a written language of sorts, and had structures built of stone, and the wheel, then surely some of those skills would have been passed down to the Pacific travelers.

It is called The Quest for Origins: Who first Discovered and Settle the Pacific Islands. It covers very concisely what is actually known about the origin and spread of the Polynesians and also addresses many of the myths that have developed about pre-European settlement.

Social Reform Based on Buddhist Insight – Examining Western Values

I am not quite sure now whether Japan has changed deeply, whether it still wants to compete with the West, but the powers that be in Japan and in Siam do not really question fundamental Western philosophy, which can be traced back to Newton and Descartes. According to Newton, everything must be scientific, nothing spiritual, nothing transcendental. Descartes said, “Cogito ergo sum,” meaning, “I think, therefore I am.”

So in a way, thinking is very important. Ergo – ego becomes very important and leads to individualism and selfishness. Cogito means “I think” – about how to compete with others, how to overcome others: other races, other nations, other genders, other human beings, other sentient beings.

I think if we follow the West, there’s going to be more and more destruction. The latest nuclear destruction here and the latest tsunami here are due to the damage we’ve caused in our efforts to overcome nature. I think this is where the teaching of the Buddha would be very helpful.

In the West, thinking is very important. It could be useful, it could be harmful thinking, but one thing Westerners don’t learn is how to breathe. I’ve told Westerners that breathing is the most important element in life. If you stop breathing for five minutes, you are dead. But we breathe in and we breathe out daily, seven days a week, nonstop. We breathe in anger; we breathe in greed; we breathe in delusion. The Buddha taught us how to breathe mindfully. With proper breathing, we can change greed into generosity. We can change anger into love and kindness. We can change delusion into wisdom, into a clear understanding.

You don’t need to be Buddhist to do that. You can be a Christian; you can be a Muslim; you can be an atheist. Everyone has to breathe. If you breathe properly, you will become a spiritual being, and then you discover buddha-nature. We all have buddha-nature. I am happy to say I think that even in the West now, people are thinking more in these terms.

Nice to see some pseudo-history getting an airing again on Kiwiblog this morning.

mm, newsflash. Genetics isn’t pseudo-science therefore news of the genetic origins of Maori isn’t pseudo-anything.

If you can’t even get a simple thing like that right then what can you possibly ever get right? Why can’t you lefty fools ever get over your cognitive dissonance on even the tiniest little thing? What is it about that politically correct bollocks swirling madly in your head with the apparent force of the storm raging in Jupiter’s red spot? Why does that stop in its tracks the thinking process of people of your political persuasion. Why? Is it the overweening bleeding hearts you all hold so very dearly? you know, the thing that tells all of you that you and only you are the most special people in the whole wide world? Is that what stops your thinking faster than a falling object travelling at terminal velocity hitting the ground?

I’d love to know, but I don’t suppose you’ll explain it. Instead I predict you’ll just give me a red tick, won’t you. Go on, you know you want to.

Digitally remastered episodes of ‘The Wire’ are running on HBO in a post Christmas series marathon.

With a bit of luck they will be released on DVD. The Wire is one of the best police dramas of the 21st century.

Reid, seeing your 11.16 included this gem: ‘I wonder how they first discovered each, out there in the vastness of the Pacific’, I thought you might appreciate reading the best scholarship on the subject. Sorry there isn’t a YouTube video on it, but you can buy it or get it from the public library. It covers the DNA story quite well.

Mike, while I’m likely to generally agree with you on the issue at hand, nevertheless DNA and genetic origins is a fairly new field, and keeping an open mind is important. Discoveries are being made on a regular basis that have overturned previously held views.

Here is one such discovery, from a reliable source.

Nearly one-third of Native American genes come from west Eurasian people linked to the Middle East and Europe, rather than entirely from East Asians as previously thought, according to a newly sequenced genome. Based on the arm bone of a 24,000-year-old Siberian youth, the research could uncover new origins for America’s indigenous peoples, as well as stir up fresh debate on Native American identities, experts say. The study authors believe the new study could also help resolve some long-standing puzzles on the peopling of the New World, which include genetic oddities and archaeological inconsistencies.

“These results were a great surprise to us,” said study co-author and ancient-DNA specialist Eske Willerslev, of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. “I hadn’t expected anything like this. A genome related to present-day western Eurasian populations and modern Native Americans as well was really puzzling in the beginning. How could this happen?”

Oh I don’t mike. That is not what I was saying, simply pointing out the the genetic origins of Maori may not be a totally settled issue just yet. “Settled” scientific issues have a habit of becoming unsettled at a later date, as the evidence improves or expands.

Did Maori come from Taiwan [Formosa].

Victoria University biologist Dr Geoff Chambers discovered Maori had just one gene marker for coping with drinking alcohol. When he looked at the same gene markers in tribes who’ve lived in Taiwan for 6000 years, he found a match. “It turned out, that like the New Zealand Maori they only had one of those markers too,” Chambers says.

Could it be that Hawaiiki, the mythical Maori homeland, is a 4000-year misty memory in the valleys of Taiwan? The trail for the ground zero of Maori genes led the Sunday team high into theTaiwan mountains.

Bunun, Amis and Yami are three southern indigenous tribes among nine recognised by Taiwan’s government. They are fiercely independent and several tribes practiced head-hunting. Descendants of pre-historic travellers, the tribes people were great mountain hunters and seafarers. For thousands of years they kept to their tribal lands and until recently, they rarely mixed with other tribes or other nationalities. Their language part of the Austronesian-tongue, their genes preserved, but their culture now struggling to survive.

Research into DNA sequencing is being done by Morrocan-born Jean Trejaut. He’s been able to accurately pinpoint the southern Taiwanese tribal links with Maori, in particular the Amis people from east coast of Taiwan – the closest genetic match to Maori located beside Bunan territory.

Robert Kaiwai, who works in Taiwan for New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said he felt a powerful bond with people from Tawain’s indigenous tribes when he travelled to the south.

The Paradoxes of the Body in Everyman, Nemesis, and The Humbling.

In a period of less than five years, Philip Roth has published four short novels in rapid succession: Everyman (2006), Indignation (2008), The Humbling (2009), and Nemesis (2010).[1] Roth himself claims that these are his last novels – “To tell you the truth, I’m done” – and plans to spend his remaining years rereading “all of my books beginning with the last, ‘Nemesis.’”[2] For Roth, “What the stories all have in common . . . is the cataclysm. Here are four men of different ages, brought down.”[3] The protagonists in Roth’s four novels are confronted with death in their lives whether it is by aging, war, polio, or suicide. According to Victoria Aarons, these novels “show the consequences of the thwarted desire to live out counterlives, wishful yearning of characters who imagine themselves living other lives, other selves.”[4] Fearing death, these characters attempt to reinvent their lives but fail and therefore judge their lives severely as one marked by past mistakes and missed opportunities.

In this essay I explore the body as a site of how Roth’s characters encounter the world as one of disappointment, decay, and death.
