I am rather excited as Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court, Antonin Scalia, will be speaking at the US Embassy in Wellington later this month, and I am going along.
Justice Scalia is one of the great influential minds on the court. He is regarded as conservative (in the US sense) but often surprises by, for example, voting to protect flag burning as free speech. Scalia also ripped into the Goverment, and his fellow Justices, on the issue of the detention of “unlawful combatants” stating that the Government must either release them, charge them or have Congress suspend habeas corpus.
