Dom Post on anti-spam bill

The Dominion Post has an article on the anti-spam bill. My comments criticising the one part we disagree with (so far – full analysis not yet done) is given prominence, but that is inevitable I suppose.

I don’t quite advocate that ISPs be left out of the complaints process entirely. Basically what we will advocate is that there be one central e-mail address to which any NZers can forward their spam. That address will have a computer analyse the spam. If a significant number of spams have a NZ aspect to them, then the agency would refer it to the appropriate NZ ISPs to take action.

As 99.9% of spam is from overseas, the agency would also work with overseas enforcement agencies to try and crack down on overseas based spammers. In fact this IMO should be a major focus of their work.
