Is it safe to speed when overtaking?

The Transport Safety Minister has said people should not get too prissy over the GG’s car hitting 130 km/hr while overtaking. I actually agree.

The Police national road policing manager has said “overtaking was never an excuse for speeding” and “If a person had to travel at an excess speed to overtake, the decision to overtake in the first place was flawed. ”

Now this is to be blunt just nuts. The useful fastandsafe website calculates that to overtake a truck driving at 90 km/hr, a motorist would need 2075 metres of clear distance, if they were not to exceed the speed limit.

It would be great of those in charge of road safety abandoned the zealotry and used common sense to say that in order to pass a vehicle going slower than the speed limit, it is sensible to temporarily modestly exceed the limit.
