Electoral Integrity Bill

NRT reports that a majority of the Justice and Electoral Select Committee have reported back that the Electoral (Integrity) Amendment Bill not proceed any further.

It might still pass into law though. In favour of the bill are:

Labour 50
NZ First 7
Progressive 1

Total 58

Against:

National 48
Green 6
Maori 4
ACT 2

Total 60

United Future with three MPs is undecided. They voted against the original bill in 2000, and only pledged support this time up until select committee.

I hope they do vote to kill it off. The electorate has proven more than capable at kicking out MPs that need kicking out. Yes it was nice to get rid of Donna Awatere-Huata early but she would have gone anyway once she was convicted. This bill just gives too much power to party leaders.
