Organ Donation

This NZ Herald story from early Jan points out that NZ had only 25 organ donations in 2005 – a record low.

One problem is that the law allows relatives to over-ride the decision of the deceased. I think that should be changed. However the law change proposed by the Govt will make it worse – it means others can veto your wish to be a donor on the grounds of their (not yours) spiritual and cultural beliefs.

I am listed as an organ donor. It’s not a hard decision. If they ever are donated, I won’t be missing them, so they’ll be doing some good elsewhere.

Next time you renew your licence, check if you want to be an organ donor. And make sure no interfering relatives will over-ride your wishes.
