The day the tax cuts never arrived

The real April Fool’s trick today is the one played by Dr Cullen on us in 2005.

In the 2005 election year budget Dr Cullen announced that for the first time, he would lower personal taxes, to take effect from 1 April 2008.

He lied.

He cancelled them last year, despite massive surpluses.

Today is the day when for the first time since 1998, people would have ended up with a reduction in tax on their earnings. But it was just a cruel April Fool’s hoax.

Will we be fooled again?
