But seriously, how long can we go around feeling apologetic for what our great-great-grandfathers did or didn’t do four or more generations ago? At least the new Asian and Middle Eastern people can’t be saddled with this guilt trip.

And what about the raids, the enslavement, the murder, the cannibalism visited on the Ngai Tahu by northern tribes. Is there a different moral ruler by which they are measured?

It’s not a question of individual guilt for our forefather’s actions. No-one is asking you (or any other private individual) to go in sackcloth and ashes to the local Marae and do penance. It’s a question of how can we structure our society so as to recognise the genuine grievances our history has given us, while forming compromises that allow us to move forward in unison. That involves each side giving a little – so we have Aoraki/Mt Cook.

As for “the raids, the enslavement, the murder, the cannibalism visited on the Ngai Tahu by northern tribes” – that, I would suggest, is a matter for Ngai Tahu to take up. And they have proven to be remarkably forgiving … after all, we have Ka mate, Ka mate performed at All Black tests in the South all the time.

Not forever, I agree. When it comes to that stuff, I’m only concerned with the generational consequences, not guilt.

You can structure it all you like however the truth is that non Maori NZer’s are not going to play this game until Maori stop using colonisation as an excuse for their appalling stats in crime, drugs, child abuse, unemployment, infanticide, alcohol abuse, academic performance and health.

I cannot believe that any sane rational person could be conned into believing this is all the result of something that happened over one hundred years ago, shame on the sickly white liberals who fell for this bullshit.

That’s what’s wrong! There’s no problem with trying to give everyone an even economic break no matter what family, race, or religion they are born into, but grievance is a nebulous, harmful concept.

It’s the crap that makes Scots dream madly the union with Britain holds them back and the illusion that for Basque extremists justifies bomb murders. Contrast such malevolent nasties with the heroes with physical disadvantages who, rather than brooding and feeding each other’s misery, valiantly try to overcome, or at least balance, these handicaps.

Grievance is turning New Zealanders into a nation of whingers when we used to be a country of doers. It’s much broader than Maori grievances. It’s the endless whingeing about hospital mishaps, it’s about how psychiatrists who have failed to magically foretell the future and prevent murders by psychos, it’s about cops without extrasensory powers to prevent crime, and it’s about a belief that he state can somehow fix everything and make the country a paradise, if only this mysterious “state” wants to.

Reminds me of a story when I was working at Mount Cook.

A Mount Cook Airlines 748 was flying down the Tasman Glacier and an American lady asked a hostee:

“Say Miss, is Mount Cook named after Captain Cook?”

The hostee ums and ahs for a few seconds and then replies, “Nooo … I don’t think we have a Captain Cook flying for us!”
