So, what has changed in the Netherlands? The present governing coalition of orthodox Christians, Christian Democrats and Social-democrats is an outright disaster. The Christians in the cabinet try to rob the Dutch of their traditional small pleasures. A smoking ban, a ban on prostitution, a ban on smoking weed, and a ban on magic mushrooms have been introduced. The list is longer but, one by one, these are all attempts to teach the Dutch that their life on earth is not meant to be pleasant.

Christian politicians’ fear of social unrest is deeply rooted. Former Prime Minister Colijn even advised his fellow countrymen to collaborate with the Nazis and abort all resistance after the defeat of the Dutch army in 1940. A cartoonist who pokes fun at Islam is exactly the type of “subversive element” that orthodox Christians and Christian Democrats would rather see the backside of.

Social-democrats, previously well known for their anti-religious behaviour, appease Islamists with subsidies and preferential treatment. They do this for electoral purposes. For instance, Job Cohen, the social-democrat mayor of Amsterdam, has personally abolished the separation of Church & State in the Dutch capital, only to please Muslim voters.

This poisonous cocktail of religion, religious insanity, Christian opportunism and left-wing self-interest has created a deadly threat for Freedom & Democracy in the Netherlands.
Extremists have already killed a politician and a movie-director in the Netherlands. Now the Dutch State has started to arrest and intimidate artists. It is frightening to see how fast, and how easily, the Netherlands is slipping back into dark times.

In the year 2008 it was Gregorius Nekschot who was arrested and thrown into jail, in 2009 there will be others.

Ladies and Gentlemen, once you trade your freedom for peace, you are doomed. The Netherlands, and I am sorry to say so, has set a very poor example.
Long live a free Denmark!

Does anyone know whether the aid and cash sent to Banda Aceh, and other areas devastated by the Tsunami, was ever deployed?

Or was it like so many other charities fundraising, going straight to the management, and their special friends in the various Countries.

I really hope that there was some relief to those affected.

D4J, I am in no mood to explain the Dutch legal system in any detail, other than that it has a true and old constitution guaranteeing civil liberties at a level that is not commonly seen. However those liberties are being increasingly trampled upon by over-PC institutions and political/bureaucratic machinations. As far as I read this piece, it identifies some possible explanations on why this is possible within the Dutch system and psyche. What we are looking at is a fundamental clash of cultures and a development that may have much deeper impact than may be evident at first glance.
You should talk with a few Dutch people, maybe, and google the situations surrounding the issues referred to in that piece, such as the Geert Wilders / Pim Fortuyn / van Gogh cases, and have a quick look at the Dutch constitution.
It is scary stuff, mate, really. (Also note that your particular hobbyhorse is dealt with in quite a specific way over there..)

Yeah have to say, billy, bringing up anything like that the way you seem to often do is a rather execrable and ad homina approach to anything.

Why don’t you just avoid that altogether from now on. I have no idea what you’re talking about BTW and I don’t want to know, the private lives of everyone here aren’t relevant in any way to anything they say here, ever.

Rex Widerstrom is another one who gets it sometimes from some people and again I have no idea what it’s about and I don’t want to know.

This is a public discussion idea-sharing voluntary forum which is only ever cheapened by such tactics as you use. Cease and desist, forever, is my suggestion.

BTW, this is in a quite different category from the normal ad homina that gets thrown around all the time which I find especially amusing especially when it comes from Redbaiter and I;m not at all saying in any way that this latter format should also be abandoned. If you can’t discern the difference between the former and the latter, then you’re not quite as bright as I thought you were, Billy.

Suffice to say that much of the trouble in The Netherlands is caused by those who claim to be xtian; D4J also claims to be xtian. Make of that what you will.

In fact, it is the exact reason why this piece of scum should have been given a prison sentence, and at the harsher end of the scale, he should not be cossetted with mummy and daddy. What sort of parents raise a slime ball like this? Where were they when he was out at the casino or playing on line poker all night? Society needs to get rid of this scum.

This toe rag made a deliberate choice to gamble, a deliberate choice to rob a bank, a deliberate choice to terrorise people at their place of work. He deserves no sympathy.

Meanwhile, Rangi from Aranui nicks a few bucks from the local Dairy and finds himself banged up for 2 years.

One assumes billy that the judge applied the same rules to George as he would apply to Rangi. If he didn’t then the Prosecution can and should appeal. That’s why the justice statue atop the Old Bailey wears a blindfold.

The fact George has a plush home and Rangi doesn’t, isn’t George’s fault.

d4j, xtian is a widely accepted abbreviation, even among xtians. The x is from the greek letter chi which has a croos shape.

I2, I have nothing against xtians in particular, but i do reserve the right to criticise any and all religions. When xtians use thier religion as the basis to tell others what to do, the xtains get short shrift around billy’s palce. Same for any other religion. Religion sours everything good about humanity.

No he wasn’t billy, I was merely using that statue as a conveniently pithy metaphor to illustrate my point.

Please note the metaphor is also accurate given that our entire justice system uses Westminster principles of precedence and jurisprudence, which are the particular legal principles relevant to the point I was making.

In a report released last week, New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli estimated that the securities industry granted its employees $18.4 billion in bonuses – a revelation that President Barack Obama characterized as “shameful.”

Not surprisingly, the audacity of The Street’s greed is far more shameful than people realize, because the total payout was actually much higher than the report found.

What wasn’t widely reported is that the $18.4 billion was only the cash portion of the bonus payout and only accounted for the money paid to securities-industry employees who worked in New York City. In other words, bonuses paid to employees working outside the city weren’t included. The Comptroller’s estimates also didn’t include stock options that have not been exercised, but that could easily increase the value of the bonus-related compensation by as much as 25% to 100%.

Wall Street’s greed precipitated the banking-and-credit crises, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill. Now those same taxpayers are being asked to finance Wall Street’s bonus payouts, which were actually a proximate cause of the crisis. They fueled a culture of greed and avarice, and created incentives for actions that led to the near-collapse of the U.S. banking system.

The Street’s greed, deceit and indifference are not only shameful; each is also a travesty of a mockery of a sham.

Understanding the compensation equation requires a look at more than just the numbers.

Proxy season is fast-approaching: It’s the time of year when U.S. public companies – in advance of their annual stockholders’ meetings – send out the proxy statements that detail such items as shareholder resolutions and top-executive compensation. The American business press typically uses that as an opportunity to declare open season on executive compensation, running long stories that detail the seemingly huge payouts in cash, bonuses and grants of both restricted stock and stock options.

This year, however, due to the ongoing financial crisis, the executive-pay controversy has been elevated to an even-higher higher level. Companies that accepted government bailout money have still paid out big bonuses, attracting the ire of federal lawmakers and the new U.S. president alike.

Just yesterday (Wednesday), in fact, President Obama announced a salary cap of $500,000 for top executives at companies that receive large amounts of bailout money, calling the step an expression of both fairness and “basic common sense.”

It’s judgement, condemnation and hatred that poisons the human spirit, billy.

Looking at religion without seeing that it’s essentially about love, respect and caring for others, is a not uncommon mistake made everyday by millions round the world. However, you will never understand it properly unless you factor in those aspects.

And before someone leaps in with the oft-heard cry about Islam being a hard-hearted religion that preaches hatred, I suggest to those people, that you look into the loving aspects that Islam has. There are many of them and ignoring them for the convenience of your own prejudice, doesn’t make those factors disappear.

Wellington ratepayers will be forced to buy special plastic bags to cover a $1.1 million shortfall in the cost of recycling as the council looks to dispose of its green bins.

The Dominion Post revealed in May that Wellington City Council was planning to dump the 45-litre green bins and was considering wheelie bins instead.

In a report published yesterday, it is now recommending clear recycling bags, which would be sold at supermarkets alongside council rubbish bags. The bags would cost 60 cents each, plus a retail mark-up and gst – costing an average household about $29 a year if the council chose to subsidise the system.

So we going to have to purchase plastic bags for re-cycling… rather than use re-usable bins (I’ve had ours for 10 years and have used it weekly…)

Wellington City Council: I will pay $20/yr on my rates for kirbside collection of my recyclable waste. But if you force me to buy bags from a supermarket then that waste will go in my wheeliebin and end up at the landfill. Your choice.

I must say since I moved to Wgtn from Akld 4 years ago, I’ve been surprised at the asidious and insidious ways which the Wellington regional councils apply to squeeze every last cent from the ratepayers.

In Auckland, wheelie bins are part of the rates. If you lose it, you call and get another, free. Granted, Wgtn doesn’t have the Metro-water model (thank goodness – that’s a travesty up there, don’t EVER do it here) but that’s about the only thing that’s better. In every other way, esp in things like inner city parking which DPF posted on a few weeks ago, Wgtn squeezes us like a lemon. Here, if you want a wheelie, you pay Waste Management about $185/year for the privilege, otherwise you use the plastic bags which stangely, animals love. Who’da thunk, eh?

I’m frankly surprised, given we’re supposed to be a politically aware region, that we put up with this shit.

The latest rort is of course going to be the overcooked rates bill based on valuations that are completely out of whack with the change in the market. That’s not just Wgtn, it’s all over. I would hope however that Rodney gets onto this issue and orders every council to develop a formula to take the new valuations approximately into account, as doing a complete set of re-valuations is of course ridiculously expensive and quite impractical. However as it stands, if nothing happens, for the next three years, every ratepayer is faced with the choice of appealing the valuation which presumably has a cost attached, or paying the bloody things knowing that it’s based on a false assumption.

It would help if more Wellington ratepayers looked into the Auckland rubbish disposal system. It’s much better than ours.

reid, the valuation doesn’t matter, what matters is the total rates bill. As long as councils levy rates the way they do, this will not change. If the valuations drop too far, they will simply increase the rate in ther dollar to get the same amount of revenue.

And Hide can keep the fuck out of the way councils work – they are eklected by ratepayers, ratepayers, not Hide, have the right to remove them. Jesusonarollerskate, you blokes really don’t like democracy, do you?

WTF?? Here in NZ smoking bans are everywhere, and most voters are pleased about it. (I’m not BTW).

A ban on prostitution?? Crap. It has been banned in some isolated areas only and some night clubs closed down because of organised crime problems.

A ban on smoking weed?- I can’t find any evidence of any ban on cannabis smoking.

A ban on magic mushrooms?? A national ban on the sale of fresh hallucinogenic ‘magic’ mushrooms took effect in the Netherlands on December 1, 2008. In dried form those mushrooms already were banned under Dutch Opiate Laws. The ban was first proposed in October 2007, after as series of high-profile deaths and injuries linked to magic mushroom trips. In other words, its fuck all to do with any right wing Christian edict. It was proposed before they won government and for health reasons that were agreed on by all parties.

The rest of the article is idiotic opinion. Where the fuck is the “disaster”. Please, all who disagreed with my original comment, feel free to point it out. Others more rational should accept this as another lesson in leftist deceit. Remember, nothing that ever comes from the lips or the pen of a leftist is beyond challenge. They’re always full of bullshit, and this is just one more example.

I think you’ll find joe, that Farrar is one of the most tolerant blog owners around.

He’s a politico and therefore used to vigorous debate.

He has certain rules, which are pretty easily established, but apart from those, there are no rules.

I rather suspect however, that he might start getting a bit pissed off if you keep going on and on and on about your 30 demerit points, and my suggestion is, if you want to continue round here, simply look at his demerit rules and follow them.

These are:
100 points – For highly defamatory comments
50 points – For grossly inflammatory comments with no redeeming quality
35 points – For blatant trolling, highly inflammatory comments
20 points – abusive language
10 points – posting off topic
5 points – For minor infractions, such as one inflammatory sentence in an otherwise good post

Have a look at the Demerit link on the top left of the Home page, which lists these rules and those who’ve received them.

To illustrate what I’m saying re: DPF’s tolerance, I have taken a number of contrary positions on a number of issues over the years, and I’ve never to my knowledge received any demerits, despite my use of some extremely vigorous language and aggressive debating tactics. My principle is, I won’t back down if I think I’m right, but I never issue gratuitous insults, unless it’s in a spirit of humour or sometimes, in the heat of the moment and only then in response to an equally gratuitous insult issued against me. That’s it, and so far, it’s worked out OK.

You seem like a strong personality and I’m sure all of us will benefit from your wisdom in future. I hope you stay around.
