Weel, here we are Monday. The shops are bopen again and all is right with the world.

I was amused with DPF arguing for the rights of workers to work.

Did he also argue that when banks close on the weekend, as almost all of them do, that they are denying their employees the right to work?

Or that any business that trades less than 24 / 7 is denying its workers the right to work?

No, I think he’s just pissed he can’t get a packet of Tim Tams and a pot of petunias.

[DPF: Don’t be absurd. I was in no way personally inconvenienced by the holidays. I spent Sunday up a hill and Friday in a bar.

This is hard for some of you to undertand, but my opposition is a principled stand, based on an ideological belief that the state should not prevent a business from opening if employers wish to open and employees wish to work.

You also probably do not understand the massive difference between a business owner choosing not to open, and the Government telling them not to open. If you own a business, then I suspect you would know the difference]

according to this, govt. spending equates to about $14k for every person. I’d imagine actual spend would already be extremely disproportionate by ethnicity, particularly when you take into account the likes of welfare, justice, television stations etc. This proposed reallocation of a mere $1.2b !! is probably only a drop in the ocean of actual tax dollars spent in this area.

I guess they’ll never learn that throwing huge sums at maori never fixes anything – and never seems rewarded with anything other than growing crime stats

I read that Labour Department employees were working on Friday, visiting garden centers and music stores to see if they were open or not. This could hardly be classed as an essential service. And Friday is supposed to be a day when workers have the day off.

I think the Labour Department should be prosecuted for making their staff work on Easter Friday.

I was foolish enough to watch the Marae program in the weekend. The topic of discussion was that the government had set race relations back 50 years by not putting Maori seats in Auckland. In an irony unto itself, the discussion pannel consisted entirely of Maori who (along with the host) all agreed that Maori had been greviously wronged. No counter-argument was even discussed, indeed the closest thing to a defender of National’s stance on the program was Hone Hariwira (LMAO).

Certain facts were omitted and emotive statements about how Maori had given “Aroha” to the whitey were frequent. At no time did anyone bring up the fact that a referenda could be initiated on the subject of Maori seats with a 5% partition. The royal comission’s findings were treated as gospel and there was no discussion over the fact that Maori seats for central government had been retained against a past Royal Commision’s recommendation. Also there was a feeling that Maori had been robbed of something, while the decision only maintains the status quo of no Maori seats. Particularly funny was a statement that the Maori seats would look after everyone, especially since pannelist and current Maori MP Hone Hariwira has refused to help any non-Maori.

But of particular concern to me is the fact that the Marae program, essentially a propaganda program for the Maori tribal elite if the content of this broadcast is anything to go by, is paid for by tax payers through Te Mangai Paho. It would be nice if the money allocated to Maori programming was used for intelligent discussion and improving race relatios rather than what amounts to a proapartheid propaganda exercise.

“British conservatives are once again on the rise. American conservatives: Don’t be fooled.

Since last year’s electoral wipeout, the Republican Party has been in a debate over how to remake itself. Some have pointed to Britain’s Conservative Party, which is today poised — after 12 long years — to regain power.

Conservative Party leader David Cameron, we are told, has crafted a “modern conservatism” which is well past all that Thatcherite talk of free markets, tax cuts and individual freedom. This conservatism is caring and recognizes the role of government; it connects with citizens and worries about day care and global warming. If only the GOP would emulate its British cousins, so the argument goes, it might forge that lasting conservative majority.

It’s true the Cameroons (as they are referred to by disaffected Tories) are on track to win next year’s general election. It is also true that this has little to do with the non-philosophy the Cameroons have been spinning to the public. The next election will instead be a referendum on a worn-out Labour movement. If Conservatives win, it will be because the party has made itself less offensive to the electorate than those currently in charge. And that, American friends, is no way to rebuild a party……

“………Much of the Tories’ “modern conservatism” consists of reassuring voters about what it won’t do. It won’t dismantle a failing national health-care system. It won’t disavow failing public schools. It won’t resist higher tax rates on the “rich.” Beyond this bold agreement with the status quo, the party has refused to articulate its own agenda, lest any part go down badly with voters.

Mr. Cameron has been at this revamp for years, but only recently did Conservatives start to gain traction. This coincided closely with growing public anger with the Labour Party and its new leader, Gordon Brown.

Polls show the public is furious with Labour’s handling of the financial crisis, which also helped expose a dozen years of unrestrained Labor spending. The party has been hit with an embarrassing scandal tied to parliamentarians’ perks. Mr. Brown, in his nearly two years as prime minister, has enraged voters with tax hikes and by reneging on a promise to hold early elections. Mr. Cameron has carefully avoided giving them a reason to dislike the alternative.

Many Conservatives here fear Mr. Cameron will become prime minister, only to be quickly exposed as a poll-driven “heir to Blair” who treads water a few years and then loses. What every American should understand is that this is not a test of “modern conservatism.” It’s a test only of whether an opposition that voices no coherent ideology can succeed when the ruling party stumbles……”

They are victims of “society.” Despite the fact that Muslim immigration has triggered an unprecedented wave of anti-female violence, women still vote disproportionately for pro-immigration parties, and yell “racism” at men who suggest it’s not a good idea.

Women cannot be cruel to decent men and kind to evil men and expect that this has no consequences in the long run………”

You have to wonder what sort of person would tell a distressed 13 year old girl to go on her way after she begged for help.

Who wouldn’t say “Hop in the car, I’ll give you a lift home”, or call the cops?

People are fond of using the term ‘morally bankrupt’ for bankers and so forth. The woman who ignored the plea for help is *truly* morally bankrupt and it really disgusts me.

Britain’s BT to cut 10,000 jobs: report

BRITISH telecoms operator BT will cut 10,000 jobs when it reveals its preliminary results next month, according to reports.

The London Daily Telegraph’s website said BT would also make a 1.5 billion pound ($3.1 billion) writedown in its under-fire Global Services division and slash its dividend by about 60 per cent.

The job losses, which the report said will be in addition to the 10,000 job cuts BT made last year, are expected to be spread across the company’s 160,000-strong global workforce.

BT’s share price has plunged from 235p to 81p in just over a year, following a series of bad financial results. The Australian Government holds up the `”functional separation” of BT’s network division from the rest of the company in 2005 as a model that Telstra could pursue.

BT warned in October that the previous management of Global Services, which supplies telecoms and IT services to multinational companies and government bodies, had overestimated the profitability of some of its biggest contracts.

BT’s results are likely to be among the worst since it was privatised in 1984.

Its poor financial performance in the face of the global economic slowdown is compounded by the cost of trying to plug its huge pension deficit.

A BT spokesman said the reports of an additional 10,000 job cuts were “speculative numbers”. “The company is focusing on cost reductions,” he said.

I haven’t read any further info on the incident, Ruth, not since seeing it on the news last night. But I once lived in Pt Chev., and for some obscure reason, that whole intersection seems to attract some dodgy and violent types at any time of day. Walk 150m in any direction and you’re fine. Anyway, as I wandered down my own mental list of interesting experiences in that part of Auckland I asked myself – would I let an upset looking 13 year old into my car.

The answer I had to settle for was that I’d have to be there and make the call as and when.

I grew up in West Auckland Goodgod, and I know Pt Chev is full of weirdos. That does not excuse being unhelpful to a distressed child.

Isn’t the crime in Auckland an indicator of social climate and relationships in that big city.
Big city dwellers often fire the sh** at small towns and how they are a spiritual and intellectual vacuum.
I live in the south,whenever I hear about a crime in wider Auckland area I follow that by saying “well it will be another islander or maori” And thats true !! Don’t play mickey mouse with do gooder intentions.
Here we know our communitiues and don’t have to make believe about safety and your neighbour.
Maybe these ethnic groups should take control of their own offenders.
The school system is the key but I’m afraid we have to cross from dealing with backward ethnic groups and others who are tech savvy.
Auckland is like London,Paris,Detroit,Berlin – wide range of ethnic groups continuing to live like they did 50 years ago.
