getstaffed – you have misread my statement. Nevertheless, it is a salutory lesson on how intolerant you are of someone expressing a point of view that differs from yours. The details of the discussion aside – it seemed a reasonable thing to debate, hardly contraversial and yet within a very short time you are slagging me off as being a troll and full of shit. If I was attacking some dearly held right-wing concept I’d understand, but a discussion on the carrying capacity of copper??? Let’s allow that you are correct – does that mean that I’m ‘full of shit’ and a troll? You’re an angry fellow indeed.

No, it does not take into account the storage or managing of any waste, but considering how “cheap”, resource wise, electricity generated from nuke energy is, it is of no consequence.

And the waste that is generated by a nuke station that has to be handled by a storage facility is very small in the scheme of things. One wrecked wind turbine per year would take up more space in a landfill than all the toxic waste from the nuke power stations in the US in an underground storage facility.

Yes it’s a bit of a shame we can’t put A-grade nuclear waste inside anything less than a well-guarded sealed concrete mountain for the next ten thousand years as opposed to burying it in a landfill then selling it off as “Green Acres.”

When you look at it like that mate, I personally think it is of some consequence.

burning waste to energy costs $270 per tonne, In Auckland the cost of landfill is only $27 per tonne. ……- go figure. and only that low cost is inflated by the RMA

nevertheless read the Waste Minimisation Act. It’s now law what you should do

Drill a holes 2km into the crust using oil drilling technology… and drop the waste down there. A gaint long-drop for the nastiest, dont-want-to-see-this-ever-again stuff.

As for blocking opencast mining. Surely Turia you must have heard of the Happy Valley nutters trying to hinder mining because of a colony of snails that are also found elsewhere in the South Island. These Green blowhards have even chained themselves to rail lines and demonstrated outside Solid Energy’s HQ. They have cost NZ taxpayers millions.

As for the Greems, which Tuija and Greenflu pillory as a typo… Don’t they know Greems are drowsy, dreaming Greens laid back, happy and quiet after puffing. Sweet dreams, Greems.

Reid, In my opinion, the best answer is a single containment facility for the world, probably managed by the US, as they have already done most of the work in developing one. One day with some luck we might see a working nuke fusion system, that would then negate this need. Until then we have to be sensible about generation, and wind, hydro etc is far from sensible. For the interim, clean coal, hot rocks and traditional nuclear are the most practical technologies available.

I think the giant long drop theory gets the wobbles when earthquakes and volcanoes enter the frame. 10,000 years is a long time to second guess that what’s 2k down today is not rumbling around and infiltrating underground water systems, making it’s way to the surface etc.

I always wonder why if it’s collected by concentrating materials through mining why it couldn’t be ploughed through the mine tailings creating a concentration no higher than naturally occurring? Might be a bit of a pig to find a way to de-concentrate it but hey we were smart enough to work out how to concentrate it. Perhaps it’s perfectly possible but by the time we have done it we would have used all the electricity produced to process the waste…

Umm, back to the windmills for a while…
