I went to an interesting meeting last night in Kelston, Waitakere. There were over 100 people there, all upset at different cuts that Tolly has made to education. The cuts included those to special education, night classes, sports funding for poor schools and the transfer of resources from poor to rich.

Many of the people present lived in the Waitakere seat. Paula Bennett should be very afraid. Her majority is razor thing. No amount of beneficiary bashing will undo the damage that these short sighted policies are causing.

Night school cuts in particular is an issue that is a slow burner and will continue to annoy and cause damage for the next two years.

Did you know:

· That the words ‘race car’ spelled backward says ‘race car’.

· That ‘eat’ is the only word that if you take the 1st letter and move it to the last, it spells it’s past tense version ‘ate’.

· And Have you noticed that if you rearrange the letters in “illegal immigrants,” and add just a few more letters, it spells out: “Go home you free-loading, benefit grabbing, kid-producing, violent, non-English speaking assholes and take those other hairy-faced, sandal wearing, bomb making, goat loving, raggedy ass bastards with you.”

How weird is that?

1.- What did the Tongan immigrant family that killed ‘humanely’ the pet dog, cooked it, and then ate it, do that was so wrong, exactly? Nothing, except that they offended the sensibilities of people who find such an act repellent. But they did nothing wrong, and they’ve been subjected to bullying (RSPCA) and vitriol (talkbackers and talkback hosts). But they did nothing wrong.

2.- There is some hand-wringing about the police not providing the media any more with lists of convicted drunk drivers. It should be remembered that this service has been provided at taxpayers’ expense — unless the media companies have been paying the police a fee for retrieving, assembling, and providing the information. Once upon a time newspapers thought this sort of information was important for the public to know — so they sent reporters along to the courts to report the cases. If they still think the information is important then they should send reporters back to the courts. In the last few weeks the media have been pointing their fingers at politicians and have been liberally spraying around words such ‘perks’ and ‘rorts’ and ‘hard-pressed, battling Kiwis’ … well, why should taxpayers pay for them to receive information that would already be available to them at the courthouse? All they have to do is go an get it. Like they used to.

Whilst i find the eating of Dog quite abhorrent, I do have to agree with you. I really do not understand how different it is from spit roasting a pig, for example. Both animals are both eaten and kept as pets worldwide.

Seems to me that a vocal few are wanting to impose rules to prevent something that is simply a foreign concept to them.

During a recent visit to china, dog was a preferred meat.
Big dog markets, full of dogs bred specifically for the table.
Nothing wrong with it.
Cat is ok too, rates up there with snake.
Rodents are fine, it is all just protein after all.
The tongan family did nothing wrong, I know of quite a few dogs in my neighbourhood that could do with slaughter.
Not to mention wildlife killing cats.

That might be so, but the point is they still did nothing wrong. And the ‘when in Rome’ doesn’t stack up. We eat pasta now, and curries, and a myriad of other foods brought here with migrants because it was something from home. There are plenty of Dutch and Polish people around who were told when they migrated here in the late 40s and early 50s that they had to ‘fit in and eat Kiwi food’. Apparently in Tonga dogs get eaten. These people did nothing wrong, and yet they’ve been made to feel that they have.

Figure I should introduce myself. I’m just turning 30, an avid gamer and I’ve been happily married to a fellow ‘geek’ for the past six years. No kids, although we may look at adoption.

Politically, I’m fairly libertarian – but a libertarian with a fair dose of pragmatic realist thrown in. Unlike some of the howling crazies that post on this blog, I’m not quite ready to abolish all social services and throw all the mentally impaired kids out onto the street – folk who advocate that are little better then those crazy lefties who long for New Zealand to switch to communism. Moderation in all things.
I’m very much from farming stock, and we learnt the value of mucking in and working together as a family to get ahead. I can’t help but wonder if the breakdown of family isn’t responsible for many of the issues our country is facing.
I have to say I’m actually pretty proud of our government over all – We have one of the least corrupt governments in the world (despite Aunty Helen’s efforts) and everyone gets to be represented. An advantage of being a tiny island, I suppose.
Happy to see National in at last. I hope that as people are weaned off welfare they will again begin to see the benefits (personally and financially) of a hard days work. And with any luck we’ll see Act’s share of parliament grow in the next election.

With my own niece and nephew I’m always about, and I take an active role in my community. Rather then have communities that foster and nurture our children’s skills and talents, we have a strange anti-community where strangers raise our children in daycare and mediocrity is it’s own reward.

But I thought you might be interested in a recent article from the Guardian, http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/jul/25/jamaican-athletes-drug-tests

Over the last few years Bolt’s PB 100m times have progressed from 10.03s in 2007, to 9.69s at the 2008 Olympics (without trying in the last 20 meters), and now down to 9.58s. Given the way the 100m record has dropped by only a few hundredths of a second increments over the last 40 years Bolt’s rapid improvement looks a little odd. Sure, he’s 6’5″ so he has a big stride, and he’s only 23, but it still doesn’t seem right.

CHILD HOMICIDE IS rare, especially in developed countries, and homicide by mothers rarer still, with an average of around two cases per year in New Zealand. Between 1991 and 2000, 91 children in New Zealand died at the hands of 101 perpetrators. According to analysis by the government’s chief social worker, Marie Connolly, 30% of killers were fathers, 24% were mothers, 18% were de facto parents, 18% were relatives or others known to the victims, and 10% were strangers or unknown killers.

This article starts off by trying to make excuses for mothers who murder their children. Good parents do not murder their children be they mothers or fathers. It then goes on to demonise real fathers. 30% of biological father do not kill their own flesh and blood. This is misandrist anti-father bullshit. The 30% figure includes step fathers. Who knows how step-father is defined? I am not out to put down step-parents. I am sure there are many very good ones. However, the majority of children killed by a male are not killed by their biological father. It is more likely to be the mother’s boyfriend or live-in lover.

If some government agency published true statistics in relation to homosexual parenting there would be an outcry if it cast them in a bad light. However, lies can be published by government about biological fathers and no one seems to care.

big bruv … also interesting to see the Mens 100m final, where Tyson Gay would have also smashed the WR if Bolt hadn’t beaten him. Methinks its suspicious when the top 2 finishers both beat the WR by a good margin.

Meanwhile 4 of the 8 womens 100m finalists were Jamaican. Shelly Anne Fraser went from a PB of 11.31 in 2007, to Olympic gold in 10.78s last year, to 10.73 yesterday. Kerron Stewart went from a PB of 11.03 in 2007 to 10.75s yesterday.

I know the story that black Jamaicans have the right physiological make-up etc etc. And sprinting has the same place in Jamaican society that rugby does here, so the good talent gets identified early. But 4 out of 8 finalists from Jamaica?

Had to laugh at the line in the Guardian article that “Jamaica does not have a drug culture”. !!!

I see labours WFF scheme is paying out to families on nearly a million bucks a year…..

In one example, a couple with two dependent children set up a family trust to own a construction company.

The husband drew a salary of just $27,303, or $525.06 a week, in 2007 as managing director of the company. But he also drew $67,000 in recent years from the trust, as well as other advances to him and his wife.

The company earned taxable income of more than $770,000 and paid $139,000 in tax-paid dividends to the trust. But the family was able to qualify for $10,348 in Working for Families assistance in 2007.

Thanks Aunty Helen, for putting my taxpayer dollars hard at work supporting the under priviledged.

My question is, why would this f***wit bother with 10k in WFF , when he is effectively earning 770k per year???

Although , in saying that, he will be paying way more than his fair share of tax. I’m torn!! I’d rather see, the tax rates flattened, and abuses curbed.

I suspect, this guy would abuse the system regardless of the top tax rate.

Phil, I had to do some phoning to Wellington and some Googling but here is what I found.

Children at increased risk of death from maltreatment and strategies for prevention

18 Doolan (2004) found that fathers (including stepfathers) were perpetrators in 54% of the deaths where a parent was the perpetrator. Mothers were the perpetrators in 40% of these cases, and both parents in 6% of these cases. These proportions differ slightly from an Australian review of children killed by their parents or stepparents (including de facto parents), which found the majority of perpetrators were fathers or stepfathers (67%) and the minority were mothers or stepmothers (37%), but this could reflect different population sizes. (Mouszos and Rushforth 2003.)

I was outraged. I presume you have heard of Mike Doolan. He would get paid a good salary to see who the perpetrators of child homicide were and did not bother to separate the figures for fathers and step-fathers. He did not bother to redefine step-father if he chooses to use a meaning that is not in the dictionary. I doubt if the percentage figures for biological father who kill there children would be in double figures.

This is not a blame game but by the title of the paper, “Child death from maltreatment” one would think the idea is to identify the risk factors.

I hope we can get a breakdown of the figures for fathers and step-fathers.

On the eating dog thing, everyone seems to forget the proud culture of the earliest immigrants who supplemented their protein intake with dog (kuri) and rat (kiore) especially after they ran out of Moas. So whose culture exactly is being offended by these hand wringing wets from the SPCA. This is media bullshit at its worst.
I suspect that the dog was despatched more humanely than the occasional fox which was torn to bits by a pack of half starved hounds egged on by a bunch of drunks-in-charge of jumpers.
Declaration of interest. I didn’t eat dog when I had a choice and would avoid rats, cockroaches, horse, snake, bear and cat but having devoured the odd pet lamb and numerous dried crickets would be a hypocrite to criticise others from doing so.

Agree Chuck, someones just asked me if the 24% for mothers includes stepmothers, I think that’s a good question. The 18% for defacto parents probably would be better described as boy friend or girl friend of parent.

Until yesterday I was of the opinion that the greatest sprinter of all time was a man named Bob Hayes, most would not have heard of him, Hayes won the 1964 Olympic Gold in a time of 10.00, what made his effort so special was that Hayes ran that time on grass.

Bolt’s achievement now outweighs that as far as I am concerned.

Horse meat is a traditional part of French cuisine. It’s called Chevaline and can be found in supermarkets.
Japanese cuisine calls it sakura (raw) or baniku (cooked)
Austria has leberkäse.

I predicted this long before the election. The politicians holding power at the moment have been elected by a voting bloc of bludgers and takers and cannot afford to annoy their supporters.

The politicians know, every one of them, that if they do so, they’ll have to give up their lunches at Bellamy’s and their chaffeur driven Beemers for the dole queue.

The next government will be the same, and the one after that too, until the productive sector grows the balls and the nouse to stop paying these weak cowardly parasites to steal from them.

Editorial: Cultural norms in a dog eat dog world

OPINION: The howls of outrage at news a Tongan family in Auckland killed and cooked their dog have an ear-stinging ring of ignorance and hypocrisy.

The SPCA is leading the self-righteous indignation of the culturally closed-minded and is calling on the Government to change the law so people like Paea Taufa can be prosecuted for killing dogs for consumption.

Mr Taufa roasted his pitbull terrier-cross in an umu pit at his Mangere home. The dog had been skinned and gutted and was partially charred when SPCA inspectors arrived. Many were sickened by the act, and gobsmacked to learn that no offence had been committed because the animal was killed humanely.

The SPCA’s Auckland chief executive Garth Halliday condemned Mr Taufa’s actions.

“Although we appreciate the difference of cultures that exist in a place like New Zealand, the SPCA finds this sort of treatment of any animal to be totally unacceptable,” he said. “Even though the law says you can humanely kill an animal, you should not be treating any animal like this.”

Despite its moral vigour, Mr Halliday’s stance is logically untenable.

How can anyone say we “should not be treating any animal like this”, when we are humanely killing, cooking and eating “culturally acceptable” animals in an identical manner every day?The majority of New Zealanders attach a significance to dogs that would never allow them to be seen as a source of food. Dogs are pets, valued for their companionship and loyalty. But is it so bizarre that other cultures do not hold dogs in such high esteem? Is it so despicable that in countries like Tonga, or even in wealthy westernised democracies like South Korea, it is acceptable to eat dog meat?

New Zealanders are too quick to hold up their own cultural values as superior to those of people like Mr Taufa, and too dismissive of perspectives incongruous with their own. There are almost 900 million Hindus in the world who deem eating beef as abhorrent; do we stop to consider their sensibilities as we tuck into a burger or a steak?

The SPCA is unable to form a coherent argument against what Mr Taufa did because to do so would require it to admit that, despite what it says, it actually does not appreciate the difference of cultures that exist in New Zealand.

Mr Halliday would have been much more honest if he simply said it is culturally unacceptable to eat dog meat in New Zealand and immigrants should conform to the social norms of their adopted country.

Mr Taufa acted within the bounds of his cultural beliefs, committed no crime in this country and is not deserving of the scorn and condescension that has been heaped upon him by people unwilling to step outside themselves and view his behaviour from a different perspective.

There is a simple solution – those who think it is culturally incorrect to eat dogs don’t have to eat them.
I don’t want to eat them either, that’s my cultural preference.

This year we ate an ex pet lamb – they are a nuisance in a flock because they do stupid things, and don’t fit in anyway. We just don’t tell the grandkids where the Sunday roast came from.

Can anyone tell me how many dogs the SPCA “put down ” each week ? Also, the difference between cremating said dogs and cooking them for protein ? We currently have some cute little lambs on our place. Kids love them. Guess what will be happening to them before too long ? I do not see a difference even though I would not eat my own dogs. It’s just down to personal preference and upbringing.

About the Tongan dog feast debate.

Is there any difference in food value to humans between meat of omnivores (sheep, cattle etc) and carnivores (dogs, lions etc)?

On cultural tabu: the British found how sensitive people can be to food tabu when the Indian Mutiny broke out after a rumour that rifle cartridges were coated with pig and cow fat. Try slaughtering a pet pig in Riyadh or a cow in Hindu heartland and you will find the NZ response to dog eating Tongans is very mild.

Dog is a treat in Korea, and probably is still eaten in China, but Chinese and Korean migrants don’t seem to eat them in NZ. In fact, they can be seen among the dog-loving fraternity in the main cities, walking their dogs.

It’s one step further to eating cats, which most Kiwis find even more repugnant, and not many steps beyond that to eating humans, as Grumpy points out above. It would be interesting to know from those who have had to eat human flesh to survive such as Leningraders during the World War II siege and German prisoners in the Gulag after Stalingrad, whether maggots rank higher on the tabu scale than long pig (humans).

Distant historic incidents may have shaped the food tabu of various cultures. Trichinosis in the Middle East may have caused the anti-pigmeat tabu of Arabs and Jews.

Perhaps dogs were so important to our cavemen ancestors that head honchos banned their hunters from killing them.

In the meantime, if Tongans want to eat dogs in NZ, they should at least meet national hygienic killing and processing standards.

“Whats the difference from eating a cow or a dolphin” probably a lot more cows around Razork but I agree with you. I have to laugh when people get upset when something they believe is sacrosanct ends up on the dinner plate. Shit, I sent a couple of steers away the other day that could be hand feed and were like pets but who needs half tonne pets. Someone somewhere will get to enjoy prime beef in vacuum packed plastic, probably the same people that worry about eating dogs but stop off at the supermarket to pick up tea. Anyhow my beef is with our urbanised society where many have no concept of how their dinner got to their plate. At least these Tongan people had the balls and the skill to kill and prepare their own meal, a skill that is lost on a large proportion of our population.

And what the hell is up with the idiots that pretend they know how to run the country. Fuck National are seriously losing the plot with talk of increasing GST. When will these retards realise the more they attempt to take out of our pockets the greater the problem of funding this country will become. Wise up National you are on a no exit road that ends on the cliff edge, it’s called COMMUNISIM, clowns.

personally I don’t give a toss what anyone eats in their own country, however we are expected to respect every other bastards culture when we visit their domain. In fact many of them come to NZ and demand we respect their culture here, that’s in addition to the ‘indigenous’ culture that is forced upon us every day.

If the majority of kiwis find killing and eating of what’s generally recognised as the traditional family pet abhorrent, then this should be respected by visitors here

She let the jury see what this arsehole was like. She did not go for the insanity plea which would have had a good chance of succeeding. I think she did a good job. Israel taking in Jewish refugees does not make it the legitimate expression of the self-determination of any oppressed indigeous Middle Eastern people while it continues to oppress one itself.
