“I don’t think you can overstate the extent to which she is the dominant figure in the Republican party today, for 2010 and 2012,” agreed Mark Halperin in Time magazine.

What’s neat about this Blog is that if you are wrong lots of people will tell you.
So, here goes.
The Sunday Star Times reports today that life insurance premiums are higher in N.Z. than in Australia. These premiums are set by actuaries. The difference between an accountant and an actuary is that the accountant will look at your shoes when talking to you. But, silly jokes aside;
I understand that it is illegal in our country to quote life insurance premiums on a race basis. So all premiums on New Zealanders are taken across the board. But across the board includes the tangata whenua, whose life style shows up in the actuaries’ calculations. I suggest that that is why our premiums are higher than Australia.
I will be branded a racist to suggest this is just another way that the Maori people hinder development in our country.

The manager is paid more because he is more qualified, harder working, and more valuable to the firm. Perhaps if the person on “struggle street” tried hard to better themselves and improve their life, perhaps one day they could aspire to these heights as well..

But then that would mean no voters for your party, wouldnt it?

Graeme Burton challenges TV portrayal

Double murderer Graeme Burton has taken umbrage at his portrayal in a recent episode of television series Beyond the Darklands, and is lodging a complaint with the Broadcasting Standards Authority.

Fronted by forensic psychologist Nigel Latta, the series profiles the country’s worst criminals, examining their backgrounds to attempt to explain how they came to commit their crimes. The Burton episode, which followed his path from a Hutt Valley childhood to his murder of father-of-two Karl Kuchenbecker during a 2007 shooting rampage, screened last month.

Burton’s lawyer, Peter Tomlinson, said the complaint would be lodged within a few days. Burton had watched the programme in jail, he said, and was “not concerned with the parts that were true”.

“But there are various factual matters that are inaccurate, just wrong, and a couple of serious ones.” He said he could not elaborate on the substance of the complaint without Burton’s permission.

The episode was initially meant to screen during the show’s 2009 season, but was pulled two days before its scheduled run when Burton’s lawyers sought an injunction.

They said the show would compromise Burton’s impending trial for stabbing Headhunter gang member and fellow Auckland Prison inmate Dwayne Marsh in the heart with a sharpened rod.

Burton was found guilty of attempted murder last November, following an unsuccessful defence that held that he had just wanted to hurt his victim, not kill him. He will be sentenced on Friday.

Philly Iles, the executive director at Screentime, which produces Darklands, said she could not comment on the substance of Burton’s complaint until it had been received. “We’ll see what he has to say for himself.”

It is not the first time subjects of the show had voiced their objections. Jules Mikus, who murdered six-year old Teresa Cormack in 1987, contacted Screentime with concerns during the production of the show about him.

And last year, RSA triple murderer William Bell complained to the BSA about his portrayal in Darklands, claiming the show had breached standards of privacy, accuracy and fairness, and rebutting claims he had been abused by members of his family and had worked as a prostitute as a teenager.

The BSA did not uphold his complaint.

So who funds these boreholes to make these complaints?

b. AS YOU KNOW – She paid her own way through college by studying and working alternately to get her degree without leaving a big debt.
c. She will make a good president as she will want a good team of American patriots (not wankers that occupy most of the top of the DEMs and GOP now).
Whether she makes it in 2012 or 2016 (better) I don’t care, we all need leaders of principle and integrity not that the NZ Labour party knows what that means.

What I would like to know is who ‘discovered’ this sensational bit of news, why Mike Williams didn’t find it on his ‘dirty-Landry’ trip, and, most importantly, why the MSM has never bothered to make public the investments the Mr Goff (the ‘Peoples Champion’ and the Upholder of the ‘Poor and Oppressed Workers’) has.

Me-thinks another bit of rampant socialist hypocrisy is evident – but, of course, because Mr. Goff is the darling of the socialist MSM we never will be told will we?

Now if HE had ‘doubtful’ shares, wouldn’t that be ‘interesting’. . . ?

No mate; the number one story on the news was that the the wonderful, talented, good looking investigative reporters from TVNZ (with unblemished skin and perfect teeth) discovered that Key had shares in a vile, nuclear weapon producing uranium mining company. Upon confronting him with the evidence, he immediately resigned in shame.

OK – maybe that’s stretching things just a little, but TVNZ needs to get the message that its role is to REPORT the news, not to concoct it.

Becoming a vegetarian can do more harm to the environment than continuing to eat red meat, according to a study of the impacts of meat substitutes such as tofu.

The findings undermine claims by vegetarians that giving up meat automatically results in lower emissions and that less land is needed to produce food.

The study by Cranfield University, commissioned by the environmental group WWF, found that many meat substitutes were produced from soy, chickpeas and lentils that were grown overseas and imported into Britain.

It found that switching from beef and lamb reared in Britain to meat substitutes would result in more foreign land being cultivated and raise the risk of forests being destroyed to create farmland. Meat substitutes also tended to be highly processed and involved energy-intensive production methods.

Secondly does the medium they used have clear boundaries and rules clearly spelt out in suitable terms for the 13-17 year-old mind or is it just a case of childish enthusiasm, pushing the boundaries in much the same way as Huck Finn did all those years ago? And what harm did Huck ever do?

More on the tale of two offices

Gosh a week’s a long time in politics. But I haven’t forgotten that last week I pointed out that there was a big problem with National List MP Jackie Blue’s explanation to the Herald about Joan Nathan’s job drying up. You may recall that Blue had told the Herald that Nathan’s job ended because of an office merger with new National MP Sam Lotu-Iiga, when actually they both still have separate offices, in different suburbs.

Clearly that article does not say that becoming a vegetarian is worse on the planet than eating meat, except in its sensationalist attention-craving opening lines.

It says that tofu and similar highly processed meat substitutes “could” increase the land necessary to supply the diet.

It also says that one of the reasons increased vegetarianism in the UK could prove a problem for the environment is that the UK would import more meat, probably from countries that don’t grow cattles as cleanly as they do in the UK. In other words, if enough Brits switched to vegetarian diets, the environmental damage caused by the remaining meat-eaters would increase.

That’s a bit like saying that if enough people in the US quit smoking, American tobacco plantations would shut down and American smokers would have to start smoking far less healthy imported cigarettes – and then blaming this sudden drop in cigarette safety on the non-smoking movement.

Nothing in the article disputes that becoming vegetarian without replacing all of your meat with highly processed “meat substitutes” reduces the amount of arable land required to supply your diet. And the fact is, most vegetarians do not simply replace their steak with big slab of soy-based Not Steak.

Then again, maybe Phil eats nothing but highly processed soy-based meat substitutes.
