An interesting story about a producer of an 80s hit song, which I have lifted it from here.

Songfacts:

This was written by Rupert Holmes, who is known for his hit “Escape (The Pina Colada Song),” but has also written many other songs and had tremendous success writing plays, including The Mystery Of Edwin Drood, which won 5 Tony awards. He has also written a novel called Where The Truth Lies.

Holmes: “I was busy on Broadway with The Mystery Of Edwin Drood, that just won all the Tony awards. My manager knew a fellow who had this act, this family group from the isle of Tonga. I said, ‘Is there really an isle of Tonga? I thought that was a made up thing from King Kong movies.’ He said ‘There really is a place called Tonga, and they’re from there. They do this sweet act, they sing and do Hawaiian fire dances, things like that, and they’re really nice kids.’ I said, ‘Kids? How Old?’ He said, ‘Oh, 14, 15, 16.’ He said, ‘You’ve been Mr. Theater for the last year, would you do me a favor and write them a song? They’ve got some good dance stuff, but they need a ballad, a love song.’ I said, ‘Who’s going to sing it?’ and he said, ‘The one with the nicest voice is the girl singer, she’s 14.’ I thought writing a love song for a 14-year-old girl would be tough because some of my lyrics used to be about some pretty strange characters. I thought it would be a challenge to see if I can write a love song that sounds appropriate sung by a 14-year-old girl. This was before we had all the Britneys, Mandy Moores, and all these teen stars. I purposely tried to write a very clear, simple, unaffected lyric that would have a little lilt to it, that would be a positive song for a young girl getting over her first heartbreak. Letting her know that this boy she just lost, or who didn’t treat her appreciatively, was not going to be the only boy she’d ever have as a boyfriend. I also wrote it thinking of my daughter who was at that time 10 years old. I thought maybe it would be a song she would enjoy and be fun to hear with her friends and say ‘My father wrote that.'”

The Jets first single was “Crush On You,” which hit #3 in the US. This was released as their second single.

Britney Spears recorded this in 1998. It was released as part of her CD single “Baby One More Time.” This gives Rupert Holmes the distinction of writing songs that have been recorded by Barbra Streisand and Britney Spears. As Rupert points out, that’s a lot of B.S.

This went to #3 on the Pop chart, #2 on the R&B chart and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Holmes: “The sad part of the story is that I don’t remember anything about it being a hit because before the record came out, my 10 year old daughter died. It was very painful for me because when it was a hit record, I realized she would have loved to have gone to see the group sing the song and gone backstage, and that never happened. I don’t really recall anything that happened around the time it was a hit because it took me about 2 years to come out of shock and be able do things like work. I did things that I had to do, like supervise the London production of The Mystery Of Edwin Drood and things that I knew how to do almost on autopilot. They asked me to write more songs for them, and I wrote a couple later on, but it was just really hard. It was wonderful to have a hit, but it was at a terrible time in my life. It was heartbreak for me because it’s the song that my daughter never got to hear as a hit record. I think she would have really liked it because she could have heard herself in the song. Oh, I was just commenting on the typo. Brian’s the only person who particularly cares, and even that’s probably just his relief that I post a comment about something other than religion occasionally.

I’ve never met Williams. But if I was a politician, I would not post politically incorrect humour in a public space, unless I was hoping to land a job on talkback radio after my term in office ended.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Reversing a ban on oil drilling off most U.S. shores, President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced an expansive new policy that could put oil and natural gas platforms in waters along the southern Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and part of Alaska.

Speaking at Andrews air base outside Washington, Obama said, “This is not a decision that I’ve made lightly.” He addressed the expected outcry from disappointed environmentalists by saying he had studied the issue for more than a year and concluded it was the right call given the nation’s voracious thirst for energy and the need to produce jobs and keep American businesses competitive.

“We’re announcing the expansion of offshore oil and gas exploration but in ways that balance the need to harness domestic energy resources and the need to protect America’s natural resources,” Obama said, according to his prepared remarks released in advance by the White House. “This announcement is part of a broader strategy that will move us from an economy that runs on fossil fuels and foreign oil to one that relies more on homegrown fuels and clean energy. And the only way this transition will succeed is if it strengthens our economy in the short term and long term.”

He added: “To fail to recognize this reality would be a mistake.”

[Paraphrasing Judith Collins]: “Yes crime’s up, but we have a violent society. It’s mainly because of inter-generational welfare dependency.”

I can’t believe it. Why acknowledge a problem and promise to have a rethink, when you can just pin it on welfareism, like National does with everything else?

Clearly Judith Collins thinks we are all basically just Pavlov’s dogs, and the merest mention of beneficiaries will be enough to get us all slathering, and let her off the hook.

Meanwhile in the Solomon Islands, now that the country is alot more stable, they wish to re-open a goldmine and there is another new major goldmine on the cards (with a 50/50 profit sharing agreement with the locals).

Meanwhile in NZ …. hysterical politiking on mining issues etc is becoming the norm …

(this is written about america..but it is most definitely relevant to where new zealand is/is going..)

But first we have to embrace that sense that great things are still possible and that our best days still lie ahead.

That mindset is a prerequisite for innovation and getting things done.

Without it, the seeds of innovation wither in a soil that is an arid mix of negativism and defeatism.

With it, America can put a commitment to innovation front and center, the way countries as diverse as China, Australia, Finland, Singapore, Canada, and India are doing.

This commitment has to come from both the top down and the bottom up.

There are so many amazing things happening at the local level ..

.. with citizens and not-for-profits making an unprecedented commitment to the idea of giving back.

And we need to do all we can to encourage these initiatives because government alone can never fully address all our social needs.

David Brooks makes a very compelling case for this approach in his column on our “broken society.”

Brooks focuses on the “communitarian” approach being advocated by conservative British writer Phillip Blond, author of the upcoming book Red Tory.

Brooks details how revolutions on both the left and the right have led to “an atomized, segmented society” —

– one that needs to be replaced by a society “oriented around relationships and associations.”

Blond’s communitarian approach meshes with Kao’s emphasis on altruism and innovation ..

.. that is not solely informed by a desire to invent something that will make you rich ..

.. but to invent something that will enhance the overall good of society.

Kao points out that innovation, despite a widely held perception, is not only about science and high tech creations.

He cites the rise of micro-lending as a powerful example of a social innovation that works at the grassroots level.

A great illustration of this is the work being done by Vittana, a micro-lending site for higher education.

The process is incredibly simple: you find and select a student in need; you make a loan for his or her education (you can commit as little as $25); ..

.. then, after the student graduates, your loan is repaid.

It’s a shining example of how innovative non-profits can lead the way —

– especially now that so many governments are struggling .. and cannot be depended on to meet every need.

At the same time, the problems our society — and, indeed, much of the world — is facing are too monumental to be solved solely by the for-profit and the not-for-profit private sectors.

We still need, in some ways more than ever, the raw power that only big government initiatives — and big government appropriations — can deliver.

In my previous post, I outlined three big innovation ideas (increasing broadband access, spurring green jobs ..

.. loosening immigration policies that restrict the entry of talented foreigners) .. our government should focus on.

President Obama clearly understands the importance of an innovation agenda.

In announcing the kick off of his Educate to Innovate campaign — a nationwide effort to move American students back to the top in science and math education —

– he made the point that “this nation wasn’t built on greed.

It wasn’t built on reckless risk.

It wasn’t built on short-term gains and shortsighted policies.

It was forged on stronger stuff .. by bold men and women who dared invent something new or improve something old —

– who took big chances on big ideas ..

..who believed that in America all things are possible..”

(i think we could do with a dose of that down here..eh..?..that big-picture-innovation..)

I don’t know what to think about that Ryan, the people making the big calls seem to be able to show a connection that is as clear as night and day, or show that they have nothing at all to do with one another, depending on what suits their programme.

But in any case, I don’t want to hear the minister responsible deflecting and saying “It’s not my fault – poor people are doing it, the previous government is doubtless responsible in some way, this wouldn’t be happening if it wasn’t for the beneficiaries, our society is terribly, terribly violent and it’s to be expected…” etc.

I want something like “Yes I am very concerned by these figures. My staff and I are going to give them our immediate attention and decide what we need to do to redress this.”

Deflecting criticism is for five-year-olds. I expect Ministers of the crown to put a plan of action in place, and then make it happen. Go Jude, use all those amazing qualities of yours that you no doubt campaigned on, to make stuff happen. Or GTFO.

He was elected soley because of his opposition to the airport, something that I believe most “Aucklanders” wanted.
It would have made a huge difference for travellers without the noise etc crap that so many said.

Michaels – I agree re Williams. I voted for him based on the Airport issue, even though I knew he was a Richard Cranium. However, I was on the flight path and noise & pollution would have been issues. Especially as most flights would have been over the Shore not Waitakere. Wood was an arogant prick on this issue & it cost him dearly. I know his wife & she said they needed his salary to pay off their hefty mortgage.

We are happy that the Airforce base will stay though.

Lazyarse…… A friend of mine lives in Sth Ak, she is directly below the flight path in Manurewa. When you first visit her place, you think, holy fuck, that plane is going to take off the roof. However, after this happens a dozen times over a few hours and a few wines later, it doesn’t bother you in the slightest. The airport also regulary change their flight path of incoming and outgoing planes, so you can go a week without them coming over.
Surely to goodness the flight plan for Whenuapai would have been far less disruptive there than to the masses in Sth Ak.
Or do the residents of Sth Ak not matter?? Obviously they didn’t when the airport was moved there in the first place.

Just a heads-up to all you fellow Kiwibloggers:

These two men get it. I’m impressed.

Anyway… sustainable whaling managed by the IWC wouldn’t effect many (if any) New Zealanders. Either way, who cares? As such, if push comes to shove I expect maintaining opposition to all whaling (a relatively new part of New Zealanders’ cultural identity) will be the predominant view.

The question then is what the government will do. It seems that the National government sees taking it’s responsibility at the IWC more seriously than Chris Carter does. But then is it worth the possible expenditure of political capital on this issue? I tend to suspect that the National led government too will ultimately determine that it is politically easier to just stick to the anti-whaling policy (and become irrelevant to international whaling affairs), than it would be to do the responsible thing by the International Whaling Commission at political cost domestically.

The end of the IWC as we know it may suit both sides well enough. The anti-whaling nations would get to continue to be anti-whaling (important to guys like Chris Carter), and complain about it each year. Meanwhile the whaling nations would get to organize their whaling activities in another forum without the interference of anti-whaling nations that they have been struggling with for the past 2 decades. Who doesn’t get what they really want?

The judge in the original case against Fr Murphy sets the record straight about the sloppy reporting by NY Times and AP of quotes that were attributed to himself (but weren’t by him) and which were never fact-checked (he was never contacted)..
He also gives the backstory re: Fr Murphy.

To set the record straight with regards to the efforts made by the church to heal the wounds caused by clergy sexual misconduct. The Catholic Church is probably the safest place for children at this point in history

With regard to the inaccurate reporting on behalf of the New York Times, the Associated Press, and those that utilized these resources, first of all, I was never contacted by any of these news agencies but they felt free to quote me. Almost all of my quotes are from a document that can be found online with the correspondence between the Holy See and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. In an October 31, 1997 handwritten document, I am quoted as saying ‘odds are that this situation may very well be the most horrendous, number wise, and especially because these are physically challenged , vulnerable people. “ Also quoted is this: “Children were approached within the confessional where the question of circumcision began the solicitation.”

The problem with these statements attributed to me is that they were handwritten. The documents were not written by me and do not resemble my handwriting. The syntax is similar to what I might have said but I have no idea who wrote these statements, yet I am credited as stating them. As a college freshman at the Marquette University School of Journalism, we were told to check, recheck, and triple check our quotes if necessary. I was never contacted by anyone on this document, written by an unknown source to me. Discerning truth takes time and it is apparent that the New York Times, the Associated Press and others did not take the time to get the facts correct.

Additionally, in the documentation in a letter from Archbishop Weakland to then-secretary of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Archbishop Tarcisio Bertone on August 19, 1998, Archbishop Weakland stated that he had instructed me to abate the proceedings against Father Murphy. Father Murphy, however, died two days later and the fact is that on the day that Father Murphy died, he was still the defendant in a church criminal trial. No one seems to be aware of this. Had I been asked to abate this trial, I most certainly would have insisted that an appeal be made to the supreme court of the church, or Pope John Paul II if necessary. That process would have taken months if not longer.

Second, with regard to the role of then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), in this matter, I have no reason to believe that he was involved at all. Placing this matter at his doorstep is a huge leap of logic and information.

Some idiot GOP supporter put out the names of democrat politicians out on the radio, typical GOP type got the address wrong.
Luckily the owner of the house heard the address being read out and shot home to find some terrorist had cut the propane line to a barbecue in a covered porch.
It is amusing to read some teabaggers arguing that propane/air mixture is not an explosive.
Maybe they should pump the basements full of the mixture into teabaggers homes to see the result.
If some sod cuts a propane line knowing propane is heavier than air and will form a fuel/air explosive that person is a terrorist.

Easter has been thought of as correlating with Passover but that celebration is actually for the Jews who were saved by God in Egypt.
It was common for the Roman Church to take over dates/festivals and sites as a proclamation of victory of the church and Christ?
All religions have done it in the natural since time immemorial.

The reality is that Jesus publicly died on the cross for us all and then was resurrected in full view of 500 people and that is what this period is celebrated for, for without the resurrection there could be no celebration.

It has become tainted by both other celebrations and commercialisation and the holiday like Christmas per se is a historical hangover from when society was Christian orientated.
