I see some insurance companies have been asking prospect clients if they have had sex with a prostitute. This is done so they can access the risk of HIV and other serious diseases. One company has been doing since 2004 and this is the first time I have heard of a complaint to the Privacy Commission.

The chance of contracting HIV from a prostitute in New Zealand is low particularly if the prostitute is not from overseas. The chances of contracting HIV from homosexual behaviour would be many times higher. I bet if any insurance company asked if a male had sex with another male there would have been a complaint made closer to six minutes that six years.

As promiscuity has gone through the roof in our society, one would think that the likelihood of increasing incidents of all manner of STDs, not just AIDS/HIV, would be of concern to insurance companies.

What are the direct financial costs to the health industry regarding STDs, etc?
And let’s not get into the broader ‘social’ and ‘moral’ costs to society for promiscuous lifestyles of whatever flavour.

I would have loved to have been at Tolley’s national standards meeting at the North Shore on Wednesday. Prof Warwick Elley got straight to the point. Here’s 20 points he made (apparently there’s more to come!):

1. The National Standards policy assumes “One Size Fits All”. BUT – each child should work to his/her own standard.

2. The Standards have been hastily prepared by committees, and untested for difficulty.

3. The wording of the Standards is vague and capable of many interpretations.

4. There is no research showing that NCEA Level 2 lines up with the progress levels indicated by the National Standards.

5. The sources that teachers make their judgements on will vary widely, making comparisons quite unfair.

6. The advice on moderating teacher judgements is naive, and ignores the problems which have dogged such policies.

7. When results are made public, league tables will follow, and many assessments will soon become “High Stakes”.

8. High Stakes testing for accountability in this way interferes with the formative value of assessment.

9. Teachers will feel pressured to waste time coaching their children on standardised tests, thus invalidating them.

10. Overseas experience shows that other key subjects in the curriculum will be downgraded.

11. Teaching will lose much of its spark and spontaneity, and children become bored.

12. Bright children and slow learners will be ignored, as gains in their achievements won’t be reflected in schools’ results.

13. Schools will be judged unfairly, as the assessments largely reflect the school’s socio-economic status, not progress made.

14.Overseas experience shows these policies do not reduce the size of the tail of under-achievement.

15.Many of the students who do not reach the standards will be judged and labelled as “failures”.

16. Dedicated teachers who work in low-decile schools will soon seek to move, rather than remain in a failing situation.

17. More teacher time will be spent on assessing, reporting and moderating, rather than teaching.

18. The “long tail” is dominated by ESOL pupils, Maori & Pasifika pupils, and others who are disabled or disturbed. Standards won’t change this.

19. This policy will require full cooperation of teachers. Most disapprove, so full cooperation is unlikely.

20.“Big Shake-Ups” always require a period of trial before implementation, as so many things can go wrong.

I wonder if Tolley responded to any of them, or just reverted to type and repeated meaningless (and often infactual) sound bites.

I have taken part in a lot of adventure sport over the years and still do. Insurance companies are able to ask about such activities so they can access their risk. If they cannot access their risk everyone’s premiums go up.

They can ask if one uses a prostitute as there is not government funded prostitute’s users group to complain. However, they cannot ask if you are a male have you had sex with another male as the taxpayer funded homosexual lobby group, the AIDS Foundation, would be complaining. We even get the lunatic fringe of the homosexual lobby groups opposed to such a question when one is donating blood.

As much as I agree with the sentiments of your comment, and that indeed no one is beyond salvation, I feel that the greatest stumbling block to most people receiving Christ, and thus salvation, is the fact that they won’t/can’t humble themselves and swallow their PRIDE. And there’s no doubt about it; Phool is a PROUD man.

Short of a major personal catastrophy I really don’t see much getting through to him. Good on you for trying , but I’ve pretty much applied 1 Corinthians 5:5 on the basis that this is speaking of an unsaved individual. Perhaps a bit harsh, but it really is “pearls before swine” in Phool’s case.

@Philu: Please don’t start a religion. I wouldn’t want to see you try to top one which promotes a zombie as saviour (He has risen. Hallelujah!) and depending upon which strand you pick, advocates the ritual consumption of human flesh and blood either figuratively or through transubstantiation, literally. following that gospel..

the ‘church of the vegan jesus’ has two main philosophical/theological pillars..

(and is..of course..pan-theological/accepting of all other faiths/beliefs..)

..i..thou shalt follow the dictates of the essene gospel of peace..

..and will not eat flesh..nor harm animals..in any way..

..2..love/care for thy brother/sister/fellow creatures..

there shall be no hierachies..no rituals..

..save for ongoing care/love/protection of suffering/exploited animals..

..followers will be known by/for their ‘works’..

..and will all work to help each other/the animals..

..through cooperation is strength..

The correct translation of the “love thy neighbour” commandment, from the original Aramaic, is, in fact:

Love thy neighbour and thyself” (emphasis added).

It’s a big difference, but little noticed. One needs to think it through.

Hurf, you silly little boy, afraid of face to face debate, you need to understand that essentially all voters in the US are conservative by our standards, and there are extremists in both parties. But only one party actively preaches extremist ideology – your mates the Republicans, until they get into power, of course.

A recent poll showed that fully 51% of US citizens of voting age see the Federal Government as an imminent threat. A threat to what, I’m not sure, but it sure bodes ill for those who actually believe in democracy, the rule of law, and individual freedom that respects the rights and beliefs of others. This poll result is, in my opinion, due to the flood of extremist rhetoric from the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Charles Colson – the latter recently advocated killing police arriving to confiscate illegal arms. Really nice guys, huh?

bc, using your logic or lack of, some non smokers die of lung cancer so cancer does not greatly increase the rate of getting lung cancer. Many of us at some time have driven home drunk yet not killed ourselves or anyone else. Does that mean that drunk driving should not be a criminal offence? I am not a lunatic. I would not suggest you are but are you capable of debating an issue as opposed to using insults in place of logic?

philu, a person can be can be infected with HIV on a Monday get tested and donate blood on a Friday. There is no test that will tell if the blood is infected. That is why they try to determine if a person is at a significantly higher risk before they ask them to donate blood. That is also why they insurance companies ask if a person has had sex with a prostitute. Logically they should also ask if a male has had sex with another male like blood services does but they are probably concerned about people complaining about discrimination. The complaint is as illogical as a complaint about asking if someone smokes tobacco or marijuana.

Insurance companies have a right to determine who is at a lower risk due to their lifestyle and offer then a lower premium. This is generally accepted except when it comes to people who choose to put themselves at much higher risk due to their sexual lifestyle.

Sorry Trevor, it was your post on red alert that I saw – well done for posting it.

It was the most straightfoward and concise (yet incredibly detailed) list pointing out the flaws of national standards I have ever seen. The “20 reasons” list should be shouted from the rooftops! And it speaks volumes that NO ONE on this site has responded to it. Hopefully, some people who had the blinkers on about national standards are now strating to critically think about them.

I’ve read your analogies Chuck, but they don’t apply in my opinion. AIDS is a heterosexual disease as much as a homosexual disease – unlike some of the posters in here, it doesn’t discriminate!
