Well no, but if we are talking about Maori, the group is not dead. In fact it is alive and well and yes, I do think it is a moral imperative to atone, not for the dead, but for the harm our racism has inflicted and is continuing to inflict on the living Maori, the descendants of those to whom the original harm was committed.

Just look at the Maori TV world cup debacle and the JK treachery towards Tuhoe and the JK racist jibes on cannibalism.

adrianb – I have no argument with Ranganui Walker. I would say he is correct. But just because the orginal Maori tribes had no concept of race until Europeans arrived doesn’t diminish their status as our indigenous people. Facts are facts.

It’s the same argument used to dispossess Palestinians. Palestinians were not nationalistic – they regarded themselves as Arabs and Syrians – until we forced them into a corner with our support of the colonisation of their land and their eviction by force from most of it. It doesn’t diminish their right to their ancestral lands and the occupiers will eventually recognise this.

Krazykiwi – I choose to recognise the accepted definition of indigenous: Indigenous peoples are any ethnic group who inhabit a geographic region with which they have the earliest known historical connection. as per Wikipedia, for example.

The history of human habitation stretches back 100’s of thousands of years in many places on earth, and bit less for the rest. Yet we’re asked be believe that 1000 years ago there was no human habitation in NZ? Cue Tui.

‘Patu-paiarehe is the name applied by the Maoris to the mysterious forest dwelling race. An atmosphere of mysticism surrounds Maori references to these elusive tribes of the mountains and the bush….The Patu-paiarehe were for the most part of much lighter complexion than the Maoris…their hair was of a dull golden or reddish hue, “uru-kehu”, as is sometimes seen amongst the Maoris of today…This class of folk-tales no doubt originated in part in the actual existence of numerous tribes of aborigines. This immeasurably ancient light haired people left a strain of uru-kehu in most ancient tribes’

Understandably anyone doing research on pre-Maori history is met with official roadblocks. The first-peoples claim of Maori would be in tatters and there would need to be other reasons conjured up for the incremental, guilt-driven apartheid that NZers are currently subjected to. That would be too inconvenient. Better to staunchly defend the unbelievable.
