Manolo – He would have support of John Key and the majority of Caucus on this. National is genuinely between a rock and a hard place on this – it needs to retain as much ‘labor lite’ support as possible while at the same time causing minimum upset to the ‘faithful’. It makes sense to let Nick Smith be the ‘evil guy’ with this, a role which he has the balls for while allowing the rest of Cabinet to get on with life.

As far as Nick’s settled libel suit is concerned – if it had gone to trial, Nick IMO would have had a 90% chance of being exonerated since the plaintiff company would have had to show he was actuated by malice. He IMO took a pragmatic approach and settled on terms would have hit him in the pocket less than if it had gone to trial and he was exonerated.

I characterise the situation as a sort of legalised blackmail. It shows that someone with an ‘attitude’ and fairly deep pocket has the ability to ‘chill’ MP’s in the performance of their legitimate duties which is hardly democratic.

I find it tragically ironic that Nutty Nick and his Nutional Side Show Act are gallivanting around the countryside on taxpayer funds promoting the ETS crap; meanwhile they have to cancel soccer games at the world cup because locals are burning coal so they can cook their lunches. It’s a funny old world and Nutional are looking like a one term wonder. Oh well JohnKey might have to do some hard work at the blind vineyard. Mad speaker can I please have a plastic taxpayer-funded card so I can book up a hooker or three. This country is a case study in political madness. Who in their right mind could respect a Minister of the Crown. Corrupt – thieves the fucking lot of them!

I emailed the PPTA last night with respect to their latest video.

Some crazy woman emailed me back stating the point of the video was not it’s quality, or lack thereof, but the attention it got.

When I emailed her back to point out that I only found out about it – and watched it – because it was on Kiwiblog, this is the response I received from Bronwyn Cross, Deputy General Secretary, NZPPTA:

Caroline Glick, the Jerusalem Post’s Deputy Managing Editor, produced and distributed the video “We Con The World” online. It had some popular support in Israel and elsewhere, but the title has more than a touch of irony and could be regarded as insensitive alongside the current flotilla deaths.

Then the video was “accidentally” promoted by the Israeli government’s press division who have since apologised.

The Israeli government’s press division is apologizing for circulating a link to a video that mocks activists aboard a ship headed to Gaza earlier this week that was blocked by an Israeli raid.

“Due to a misunderstanding on our part, earlier (Friday) we inadvertently issued a video link that had been sent for our perusal,” according to a statement from Israel’s Government Press Office, which distributed the link to media outlets.

“It was not intended for general release,” the statement said. “The contents of the video in no way represent the official policy of either the Government Press Office or of the State of Israel.”

However, it seems that some knuckle dragging low life took it upon himself to jump up and down on the roof of Key’s ministerial car, rightly so this piece of left wing shit was promptly arrested.

The most amazing this about this incident is the way the pinkos have reacted, over at the sub standard the vandalism of the limo has been greeted with joy.

It seems that anything is excusable if you are a Labour supporter.

When influential persons in the education sector advocate that they are not after quality but attention, aren’t we in trouble? The yobbo bouncing on the ministerial car in ChCh certainly got attention but is that the sort of quality we want turned out. Maybe the PPTA should consider the the overinflated pricks who write on kiwiblog include a vast number of employers who are, ultimately, a major consumer that PPTA’s members must satisfy. Maybe PPTA should reconsider its views on quality and attention.

Stupid, yes, very. But why do you jump to the left wing conclusion? Could be, but not necessarily, stupidity runs across the political spectrum. There is plenty of anti-Keyism on right wing blogs, for example.

Yes, it is a crime if you don’t have any legal authority to stop and board the vessels. But Israel does have a legal right to impose and enforce the blockade. Qu: If it didn’t have a legal right don’t you think the Turks would be making a case of it right now???

Examples please of killing passengers and of holding them hostage. Certainly Israel has been stopping boats and directing them to Israeli ports. But I’d suggest that’s not legally kidnapping. Any more than a policeman taking you to the police station is kidnapping you.

When was Turkey attacked on the high seas? A Comoros-flagged ship was stopped as it attempted to evade a legal blockade.

Thanks Manolo, trout and others with ETS concerns

I wish there was a list of the “nick smith meetings” where and when.

Would there be some where that on the web such as a blog where it is reported , scanned, copied, transcripts, of how those meetings went. That way we would figure their strengths and weaknesses. Information gives us power. Co-ordination and co-operation increases our effect.

If possible I think it is necessary to go more than one meeting, preferably 2 or more.
First to get the “lay of the land” how they run these meetings, question answer opportunities and to understand just what they are claiming so you can more succinctly refute and get your message across. They are supposedly well skilled at running meeting, suppressing dissent, and they put a lot of thought how to push through what they want.
At your home town meeting with friends you would be prepared, with short succinct pithy comments, and well honed questions, with good references, that really do damage to their arguments.

Well the best of luck, = preparation meets opportunity

Phool I’m somewhat puzzled by people who claim to be in favour of “nature” and yet have some kind of objection to a natural meat-eater eating meat? You, know, the “nature knows best” crowd who are for some reason convinced that nature got it completely wrong making us omnivores, and really intended us to live on mungbeans and nut cutlets. And oddly, this all-knowing “nature” built our entire evolution for the last million or so years on a feedback loop of developing larger brains to be able to hunt more cleverly, and therefore eat more meat, and therefore get enough calories to support a larger and larger brain. And here we are, the end result of a million years of advancing BBQ skills. Odd indeed.
Odd that they chant the mantra that humans should realise they are “part of nature”, and yet we should adopt an utterly un-natural diet, which no other meat eating species would ever do.

Again, you call me insensitive, but I don’t recall the left being particularly sensitive earlier this year when Hamas rockets were killing and maiming, or executing capital punishment.

The road to peace is via diplomacy – all Hamas needs to do to end the blockcade is to renounce violence and recognise Israel. But why would they with hypocrits like you around. Why is there no Green or Left criticism on Hamas’ refusal to attend peace talks with Israel?

Tim, I didn’t say government sponsored. But the Government press office circulated a link to the video to media – and later apologised for that. (Glick has worked in the IDF’s Judge Advocate General division, and has also served as assistant foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu).

Both sides try and manipulate the media and public opinion. It is not all one sided, either way. Because I might question some of what Israel does doesn’t many I am anti them and pro Hamas, far from it.

In Gaza over the last couple of years over a 1000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israelis. How many Israelis have been killed by rockets in that time? NB I don’t support the rocket attacks in any way.

What are your impressions of living conditions for those living in Gaza?

One of the main problems the Palestinians have is they are not united, they have many factions all with different ideas on what needs to be done and achieved, that makes it very difficult to see a solution everyone would accept.

Not all Israelis are happy with how their government approaches the problems either.

Heh, unfortunately, I think ‘they’ know that Bob. They’ll be wanting to stuff the meetings with happy, bouncy, partially sedated National party faithful to simper approvingly at the post normal soothings of Bishop Nick and Father Pete.

I’d also be interested to know how they’re traveling between these meetings?

I asked the Ministers office to supply me with a list of meetings but haven’t heard back from them yet. I’ll ring tomorrow if I still haven’t heard.

Ok Mike, I’ll reword what I said – I condemn any rocket attacks (I presume you mean the ones from Gaza to Israel). I have no idea if Hamas can control everyone and prevent them all though, I doubt it.

Hamas and other Palestinians are certainly partially responsible for their own ongoing predicament, but there is a lot of history and grievance and counter grievance involved. It’s a longstanding mess that will be very difficult to sort out, if it’s possible at all. It will never be just a matter of everyone else rolling over and complying with everything Israel demands.

What kidnappings are you referring to? All or just some?

Auckland’s hybrid-power buses – once trumpeted as the future of inner-city public transport – have been taken off the road indefinitely because of reliability issues and replaced with diesel vehicles.

The City Circuit free service was introduced in 2003, using three red hybrid-electric buses arriving at 10-minute intervals on a route encompassing Britomart, Queen St, the Sky Tower and university campuses.

Each costs $560,000 – twice the price of a new diesel bus. Ratepayers meet the bulk of the cost, with the Auckland Regional Transport Authority paying $786,000 a year, Auckland City Council $40,000, and the Heart of the City business association chipping in.

Two of the three lie idle at the Westhaven depot of contractor NZBus. Heart of the City chief executive Alex Swney said the situation was “disappointing” and the association was reviewing the service.

But diesel, eh? I guess that’s even more of an incentive to drill for oil, other than the fact that everything we ever do is dependent on the stuff and requires more than just what voodoo energy sources like wind and solar can provide.

I hate sports but like this site, I had no idea how many niche blogs bitching about advertising agencies directions on certain products were available in NZ! The sports stalking is very funny. The spoiler alert for a 1999 film was clever, this is another top 10 post. Vettori axing himself however was just wishful thinking.

And what a delightfully strange land it is, I am glad I’m visiting and not staying. The ‘most men are rapists’ blog (I’m paraphrasing) was a sobering blog and a bit of a downer. The graph of the ‘consent continuum’ (I swear I am not joking), must be seen to be believed. Very well argued and intelligent post on not belting your kids, excellent critique of the old boys network (although I am highly amused the writer seems to think anyone listens to Simon Upton). I don’t care about making jam.

OOOOOOOOh they are sharp aren’t they? Very good demolition of ACT on campus, good chase on National’s support of VSM, and excellent post on academic freedom. If this is the future of our news rooms, things are not as bad as they seem.

Ummmmm how do I put this into polite language? His desire to keep prisoners from having any property whatsoever without any hint of humour seems more hate site than blog. His description of the National Party as Socialist for offering to fly relatives of those who died in the Erebus crash suggests some type of addiction to pain killers mixed with vodka. I’m looking at his 3rd link and I’m not sure 14 words technically amounts to a post, maybe a text message, and Osawald’s defence of vigilantes in Hazard County Martinborough comes across a little grand cyclops for my liking.

His defence of sweat shops was amusing, I’m surprised he included such a debunked critique of BERL’s harm of alcohol which BERL responded to by claiming 1) it misinterprets the study’s brief and, on this basis, employs an inappropriate framework for its analysis, 2) makes some simple, factual errors about our method and the information used and 3) uses assumptions with a cost-deflating bias, reflecting their own world view. His post on ticket scalping was genuinely fascinating, top 10 post.

The Mills and boon romance novel is pure brilliance, best line “his chest rising and falling with the regularity of an Aussie scrum. The obesity epidemic “Currently we rank behind Mexico and the United States. I believe with a concerted effort and more swine flu cases Mexico is definitely within our sights.” His desire to catch swine flu is admirable and his application to NZ cricket for the coaching job sounded reasonable. Impressive blog.

This is the ‘most males rape blog’ referred to in In A Strange Land blog, it’s amazing how commuting can lead to the conclusion that most of the other gender sexually force rape. I think we need to start handing out board games or reading material during commutes if this is the remarkable conclusions some are reaching. Excellent critique of the bitter left and their Maori bashing (that said the Maori Party certainly deserve bashing), high brow smart humour with the Bennett post on privacy and a very interesting post on asian values.

The first one is a solid steak and three vege opinion piece on getting tough on crime while cheerleading Whaleoil complete with Oprah Winfrey, “I too have been abused” confessional. Lisa moves onto a blog about how big her breasts are, and how much she loves them being big. Her third blog is why she didn’t decide not to prize fight another woman from a similar themed naked news TV brand and her fourth blog was about losing her virginity. Was her blog called the Vagina monologues by any chance?

Keeping Stock
I didn’t get the point of the first post at all. Second post was about gay people bleating about homophobia, the third is an embarrassing ‘memo to John Key’ begging him to legalize beating kids and the fourth one is about a soccer game. There was a mention in the fourth post about retiring from blogging. That was the best bit of the four posts.

Not PC
How much can one person write about leaking houses and still conclude the free market works best? I may disagree with what Not PC says but I will certainly defend his right to blog about it on a site I don’t ever have to visit. Ever. His second post is an attack on Journalists and sounded reasonable right up until he started referring to the tea party as “400,000 Americans taking up pro-freedom signs against their government”. Hilarious, but I don’t think he meant it to be. His post on punk is annoying in it’s attempt to claim the entire genre in the name of Ayn Rand, best line, “Punk erupted at the fag end of Britain’s failed thirty-year post-war experiment with socialism”. I love how everything is the fault of socialism, did he submit his blog about the fall of the Berlin Wall? That post eclipses ‘War and Peace’ by 120 000 more words. His fourth post however is moneyshot gold, here Not PC declares we should give war a chance and let’s rally the troops for having the guts to go into battle (mainly against Socialism I suspect). ANZAC day should be about honouring the soldier (not regretting the loss of life and questioning the insanity of throwing so many of our young people into war mind you). The perfect eye rolling moment? This line, “Take time today to remember those who lost it all for your freedom. They did more for peace than anyone who protests for it ever has.”

While many others attempting the angry-old-man genre resort to lengthy rants, he keeps it punchy, succinct and always shoots from the hip – usually aiming at the groin.

Comments: Worldly and serious political analysis from credible left wing commentators. A good mix of subjects, handled in an academic fashion… but there’s nothing like re-packaging the all-men-are-rapists topic (in layers of feminist assertions and then leaving it all open-ended) to score a few comments.

Comments: Solid, sober liberal/left commentary on the usual menu of liberal/left issues. Thoughtful, but not particularly gripping.

Would give Emma Hart (Public Address) a run for her money for the most gratuitous over-use of personal pronouns in a blog – quite some feat. Comments: Subdued, pale and grey – in content, style and personality. Appealing to the same audience that reads the sodden newsprint of a free paper pulled from the letterbox on a rainy day: only the elderly would bother.

Comments: Thin. The images were the real weak point – as none of the drawings looked like their subjects – which is a problem because there wasn’t any text to accompany them. If a line had to be drawn anywhere it would be right through this nomination – go back to your day job.

Liberation
Comments: Pol Sci essays – right down to the footnotes – making for stodgy, slow reading from which I was easily distracted. Points off for using banal quotes from establishment rightists (esp. David Farrar) as if they had any serious value in this type of discussion.

UPDATE 1: Why do so many journalists blog, despite their apparent opposition to the concept? Simple, says one journalist cum blogger: “there’s a part of me that loves blogging because you’re allowed to break the journalism rules.”
Comments: Classy pieces of writing marred only by the inevitable uncritical quotion of Ayn Rand – as if it were Bilblical scripture – rendering a few parts more sermon than secular commentary. Fortunately the libertarian karakia is transcended by solid and lucid prose, including an excellent exposé of the leaky building issue.

Comments: It’s a farmer’s attempt to be angry at things – and it ends up sounding like a slightly mild gripe in the form of a polite letter to the editor of the Geraldine Advertiser. Like listening to a mildly middle of the road rural radio station, Mantovani FM – available only in mono – and only in the Mainland, sponsored by a brand of sleeping pill for the elderly.

Comments: Firstly, what a shit website. Secondly, this is just a series of motel industry memos. Thirdly, what a shit website – who puts an annoying jumping cartoon in their own sidebar? Like trying to sleep with a flashing, buzzing ‘No Vacancy’ sign right outside your window.

Comments: Conscientious, solid, researched, thorough. Reactionary self-identifying ‘proper’ leftist with a well cultivated claim to some form of leadership, even if the chosen posts are straw men targets (great digs at David Farrar and Guyon Espiner nonetheless).

Comments: Snarky and somewhat hacking in tone the Labour/Unionist line is held taut by anon party shock troops who can cut through Tory spin with ruthless precision. The view from one side of a great relentless maul of a political street brawl – with David Farrar’s Kiwiblog as the always present (if sometimes unmentioned) opponent.

Hot Topic
Comments: Stinging, blistering attack on Ian Wishart – talk about scorched Earth! A combination of endless science and constant politics makes for some lengthy posts that often veer to the polemical in order to answer the skeptic/’denier’ enemy – an angle however suited to blogging and probably the most palatable way to explore the debate.

Handmirror
Comments: Righteous, leftist, feminist anger in measured terms. The problem with the sort of female blogging (and writing) typified here is that it’s all: I, I, I, me, me, me. It is as if the only way anything can be explained or analysed is by having the author insert themselves into every aspect – so unnecessary and such a detraction to otherwise meaty opinion pieces – fuck I HATE that style.

So, you’re quite happy to condemn Israel for distributing a link, but you can’t criticise Hamas for refusing diplomacy and peace talks?????

So every criticism should be accompanied by criticisms of all possible aspects related to the topic so someone can’t run nitpickery diversion?

Tim, a minor criticism of a minor issue is not a total condemnation of everything about that party and total praise for the other side. No matter how much you (and others) try to paint it like that.

I have just broken with my normal behavour patterns and watched the vomit inducing performance of five chins using a mixture of very little used words of our beautiful language, a sickening minimisation of the offending, absolutely zero remorse, and a shitload of arrogance in response to the interviewer on his misuse of ministerial credit cards.
Even a totally incompetent leader would call for his resignation, but then again Mr Goff is his leader, it had slipped my mind.
Inappropriate use of credit card – admitted.
Gross behaviour after repeated warnings on inappropriate spending – admitted.
Denigration and exploitation of the “actors” appearing in the movies – not denied.
Attitude of absolute entitlement – proved.
Continued suggestions by Mr Jones of his very well disguised “humility”.
IMHO he wasn’t even slightly embarrassed at what he did but obviously really pissed that he had been exposed.(that broke my sour mood and almost brought a smile to my lips).
Denial of any threat to his right to sit in the supreme body of the legal framework of MY NATION.
This man, and it almost causes me to gag to use that sobriquet, has zero zilch, nana absolutely no right to ever enter the debating chamber of MY parliament ever again. On the admitted evidence, and I am no angel, his behaviour is beyond the Pale.

..so virtually everything i write is written to be read out aloud…

which does make it a little bit different from how others write…

wot with their sentence-construction..

..and all those unnecessary barriers to dialogue/communication/the transmission of ideas..
