As for disputing the consensus, I welcome dispute based on the scientific method. I would die a lot more peacefully if I knew that my baby daughter will grow up in a world without the inevitable destabilising consequences the current consensus on climate change will bring.

Problem is, except for a couple of minor IPCC errors, the conclusions presented by deniers have not followed from the evidence they have presented. I know FF will have apoplexy at this, but I can’t help the facts.

I spend a lot of time chasing down the arguments promoted on here by deniers, and in every case even I could understand the scientific refutation of their points. Quite simply, the credibility is on the side of the consensus view, in every case. And my concern with the consensus view is that, by definition, consensus entails the most conservative view, and I currently accept that climate change is further advanced than most non-scientists think, and is, on the current evidence, accelerating on a worst-case scenario.

I do find that alarming. I know many scientists do as well, and I wish they would speak up more. In fact, they feel constrained against that, which gives the lie to the giant conspiracy theory promoted by deniers. Like FF.

Hey, John Boscowan: is your opposition to the ETS based on denial or genuine dispute as to its efficacy and cost. If it is the latter, what’s your alternative?

They were also armed and attacked a lawful boarding after being advised by both Israel AND Egypt that they could land their aid at their ports and use the approved overland routes.

Ales Egypt has bolakaded Gaza as well because Hammas is a terrorist organisation that destablises the region that Egypt exists in. No you probably never heard about that because the problem isn’t a blockade, its Jews. Isn’t that right mickey.

My email to JK & Nick Smith on the ETS. Suggest like minded people send the same to try & stop this madness. It is my line in the sand for voting in 2011. ETS = wife + mother + me do not vote at all. No ETS = National get 3 votes.

I am writing to offer my disgust at the implementation of the ETS from 1 July. It is a tax that NZ does not need at all and I think you should be listening to your core constituents on this matter more than you have done. After all, you seem to act when Forest & Bird & their ilk have issues with proposed strategy’s such as mining S4 land. Also, the ETS was a deal done with the MP, giving them financial advantages to get their support. Mainstream middle NZ have also had enough pandering to the Maoris as well.

Also, I am annoyed at Nick Smiths comments about the SAS in Afghanistan saying they won’t make an appreciable difference there. “….do we really think those New Zealand troops in Afghanistan are going to make a world of difference to the final outcome there?

“No, we don’t. ”

Well the same can be said of the ETS I am afraid. Apparently the Icelandic volcano has belched out more CO2 than can be saved for the equivalent of 42 years. Also, I feel that Nick Smith in conjunction with Dr Gluckman are pulling the wool over your eyes on Climate Change, don’t you think Climategate meant anything at all or is that now a distant memory? Time to move on.

We do not need an ETS, which will cost tax payers more than $3/wk, there will be flow on costs such as food price increases as suppliers pass on fuel costs. Our freight forwarder has already increased the level of Fuel Surcharge because of the ETS. Power costs will increase and we will pay more for dairy in NZ as Fonterra will pass the costs onto NZers as they cannot pass costs onto exports as they cannot dictate whole milk powder costs. And my bet is that this tax will only increase in time as taxes tend to increase as a way to gather revenue. Also, this will mop up tax cuts for a lot of middle to low income families, I am lucky as I can absorb this. A real vote winner this will be. If it does cost more than the $3/wk, which I recon it will, it will make Lab/Grn look more appealing, ‘Nationallike’.

The best thing you can do is scrap the ETS as a lot of National voters will not vote National in 2011. I am one of them, I will stay at home along with my wife & mother. Seen the recent downtrend in the polls at all?

Even better is to get rid of Nick Smith on this, he will be the downfall of National in 2011 with this whacky scheme. Why do we have to be world leaders on taxes? You just dropped income taxes, why introduce another while ACC will also increase in 2011 (I can see why on this though).

If we have a National Govt ETS it will be easier for Lab/Grn to increase this when they get into power.

DITCH THE ETS AND LISTEN TO THE VOTERS WHO VOTED YOU IN……………..

There’s a pile of solid, peer-reviewed scientific evidence disputing what you claim is a consensus of impending CAGW. When presented with this a few days ago you tried to smear the publications and/or scientists. Any offer of ‘welcoming dispute based on the scientific method’ is a hollow lie.

Just a thought, and for clarification, while I am against whaling, I am also against the actions of the sea shepherd group…..

Given the hoo-hah with Peter Bethune and his actions to stop whaling by Japanese companies. Japanese whalers have been continuine to harvest whales and have been doing so under the auspices of scientific whaling, as commercial whaling is a no-no. I did note that one of the charges Bethune was charged with, and pleaded guilty to, was interfereing in a commercial operation.

Is it now a matter of public legal record that Japan is engaged in commercial whaling?

At best, like Garth Paltridge, for example, many want to rest their case of inaction on hoping for the best. That’s just simply not a responsible position to hold. And the hockey stick stands affirmed, CRU’s science stands affirmed, most glaciers are melting, Polar bears are currently under stress to survive and will be in even more danger as more ice melts, and you really shouldn’t rest your case on demonising individuals. Look at the science.

Japan is not acting outside what the Whaling Commission rules allow a country to do. The so-called research is towards commercial ends so reasonably is a commercial operation in itself. Anyone who does not ‘understand’ scientific research in this context, does not understand the Japanese custom of saving face. It would be better to leave the ‘scientific research’ alone, as whale meat is not that popular in Japan. They try to feed it to schoolchildren to build a market but reputedly have warehouse stocks which are not moving that fast.

As an alternative to fucking idiots acting as daredevil pirates in the Southern Seas, the same people should be running competitions open to the Japanese public to, as a prize, fly winners down to New Zealand to go out on the Kaikoura Whale Watch expeditions. But fat fucking chance of that happening! – it’s not as exciting or self-gratifying as the delusional hero South Seas shit, and Japanese guests would probably be mugged, as many tourists are.

I would imagine that the whalers are contracted to hunt the whales on behalf of the scientists. So the people doing the hunting are providing a commerical service, but the whales are for scientific purposes. You know…. officially. So there would be no admission of commercial whaling.

Mann’s Hockey Stick does not stand affirmed. Even a stochastic charting novice knows that hand selecting start and finish periods can deliver almost any result. Mann did just this, and found it convenient to omit data sources that didn’t support his presuppositions, and cut’n’splice others to better support his presuppositions. Biffra handpicked tree-ring data from a huge data domain etc.

CRU’s science does not stand affirmed. The horse has bolted on that little lie. The so-called reviews were a whitewash. Unless you think Oxburgh has impartial. Pffft.

Polar bear populations are thriving thanks very much.

Global sea ice levels are stable. Alarmists always point to lessening sea ice in one part of the world, while failing to report corresponding rises elsewhere.

Our planet is still emerging from the last ice age (long cycle) and we’ve experienced a Medieval Warm period and a Little Ice age. Our climate can and does change. Always has, always will.

The entire CAGW show is a complete nonsense. Science has been hijacked by political agenda, and the real damage is to the minds of our next generation who will increasingly mis-trust scientific evidence and adopt the convenient and the existential in its place.

Luc, I’m sorry if you feel demonized. Perhaps it’s time you woke up to the facts. Your grandchildren will not need gills.

Krazy, thanks for the link to that highly enjoyable debate. But how you get a win for Monckton out of that is beyond me. The other two guys were just gobsmacked at the ignorance spewing from Monckton’s mouth. Even the one who thought he might be on his side!

A couple of quick points:

1. Monckton wallows in the uncertainties, at best, to say global warming hasn’t occurred in the last 15 years. So what? Look at the long term, idiot. Short term trends do not trump long term trends.

2. 750 million years ago CO2 was twice today’s and life flourished, he said. Um…it wasn’t human life, dear Lord.

3. I know, I did say two…but a transfer of wealth from the rich to the poor? Where does that come from? Oh, of course, Left Field

4. (I definitely can’t count, can I?) Monckton promotes the use of fossil fuels but…hang on, we are running out of oil! We do need to develop alternatives, but he pooh-poohed them all!

I write to oppose the introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme.

This tax will add unnecessary costs to families and taxpayers at a time they can least afford it. It will produce no environmental gain; will provide windfall profits for state-owned electricity generators; and provide state subsidies to foresters. This is simply a wealth transfer of gigantic proportions that cannot be justified.

Our trading partners are not implementing an ETS and are unlikely to. Further, New Zealand is in credit under Kyoto so there is no need to tax anybody. And, Kyoto is due to expire on 31 December 2012 so this tax is even less justifiable considering that. There was no agreement in Copenhagen to extend Kyoto and there is unlikely to be an agreement going forward. But as you know, that ETS tax will remain regardless after that date.

Your party campaigned on reducing costs on ordinary New Zealanders, and properly so after middle New Zealand was starved of cash during the Labour years. Yet, you are now imposing the biggest cost that has been seen for many, many years for no reason at all.

We cannot be a world leader because the rest of the world is not following.

For the sake of middle New Zealand, who voted you in at the last election, scrap the ETS.

I wonder is the game plan is to issue the ETS credit forrestry bribes being immediately (gets Maori on-side) and then have Key loudly scrap the ETS in the months leading up to next years election … citing ‘listening to middle nz’, ‘have honoured our Kyoto obligations’, ‘other countries not pushing forward’ etc (get middle NZ on-side) ?

That’s a very risky proposition. The moment the ETS is passed and prices go up, Key and his spinelss National party will lose many, many votes. Even if the government scraps it with a view to the 2011 election, do you think prices will ever come down?

The damage inflicted by this “world-leading” legislation will hurt the economy, which appears to be the fifth-columnist Nick Smith’s objective.

Due to be introduced in Britain by early next year … it is described as offering a “paradigm shift” in cancer diagnosis.

The test is the first to identify accurately the signals sent out by a person’s immune system as a cancer germinates.

Research suggests that such signals can be detected up to five years before a tumour is spotted …

Scientists described the test, devised initially for lung cancer, as a means of tackling the country’s poor record of early diagnosis and disease survival.

Detection of lung, pancreas and gullet cancers is often so late that it acts as little more than confirmation of imminent death.

Physical symptoms — the most common trigger for treatment — often will not appear until two thirds of the way through the cancer’s development.

In the case of lung disease, the tumour can already be the size of a tennis ball.

Even the earliest screening detection is only picking up the cancer after more than 20 cell divisions …

the only time the government ministers looked at all confident..on top of their game..

when questioned about anything current/their own policy..

..they just looked shifty/ill-at-ease…

..and you could almost see their sighs of relief…

..when they were able to turn any question around into one of tthose ‘labour-bad!’ routines..

East coast oil exploration approved

Brownlee described Petrobas International Braspetro B.V., owned by Brazilian company Petroleo Brasileiro S.A, as one of the biggest players in the global oil and gas industry.

The announcement comes as Prime Minister John Key indicates the government is watching the deep-sea drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico closely, and that Environment Minister Nick Smith will shortly be making announcements on the subject.

So now the fruit cake nut job is going to be let loose on the future once more. How many more times are the Nats going to let this clown fuck with anything.

The National ETS.

Apparently Mr Smith won over the members of the National Party who were at their weekend hui.

Well if the story is so compelling perhaps Mr Smith might like to write it in detail and explain to us mere taxpayers what the compelling story is that makes the ETS so important that he can ignore voters in the way he and Key do.

But don’t hold your breath for any rational written explanation for us all to study. Rationality is not something Smith does and despite all the rhetoric about Key taking people along with him, that mode of operation appears to have been forgotten and discarded on the ETS. Indeed its a lot more like I’m in charge, just do as I say.
So few of us ordinary taxpaying mortals are any the wiser as to the reason these guys want to proceed.
Now I and many thousands of others disagree with the ETS based on what our current knowledge is, so I reckon that its up to Smith and Key to stop riding shotgun and actually take a little time to tell us why they think we should do this thing.A couple of hours and some well considered writing may well present us with a different picture.
Being treated as stupid and we know best by those that consider they were born to rule (normal National Party attitude), doesn’t cut it anymore as many of us are much smarter than those two. (and money is not the decider)
So, is it too much to ask for a calm rational explanation of the plan going forward or are we to be treated again like the servants of the Queen that we are and just have to suck it and pay?

In saying that though, my most recent project was a PetroBras project and was very successful, primarily because the infrastructure was Norwegian supply. PetroBras do not really build their own installations nowadays.

The worst thing about the GoM spill is that it is not BP’s fuckup, but Transocean’s, however the useless media will never say that as Transocean are not one of those “nasty oil companies”.

All very sensible, but look what he did to +80% of the electorate before now and now the whitewash aided and abtted by his frontman Nigel Latta as reported by Investigate magazine.

IMO Gore lacks integrity and I guess that’s an attribute that most would agree is essential to sustainable relationships. To his credit 40 years is a better effort than many.
