Very good question asked this morning on Radio New Zealand news of the anti-whaler Paul Watson: Why should we believe you?

No doubt the young woman who asked it will be hauled into the boss’s office and asked to explain her temerity.

RNZ, like the rest of the media, still uses the word ‘activists’, which is a bit partial towards the anti-whalers. What’s wrong with ‘protesters’?

Well, without getting into ‘poofters’ … I do wonder if McDonald’s are being mugged here. McDonald’s is providing a free service. McDonald’s should be able to decide some terms and standards, as the provider of that free wi-fi service.

I don’t believe that a lot of young gay people — even people who might think they are gay — will be harmed if they cannot log on to a gay or gay-related site while in a McDonald’s.

They would have plenty of other places, if they feel they cannot do so at home — libraries, internet caffs, friends’ places, even.

Yet, to listen to Radio New Zealand this morning, and their arm-twisting of the McDonald’s head honcho, you’d think that McDonald’s was committing some form of social crime.

Young gays and young I-think-I-am-gays have not been harmed in any way.

Yes it’s odd that no one is saying “Hey McDonalds should sell KFC” but as soon as its an issue of them deciding what service they will provide by way of internet access the story is different. Here’s the thing – if you want to access specific web sites, get your own internet access!

Paul Watson, like whales, seems to be a protected species with the New Zealand media. Although he admits to having scuttled a number of whaling vessels, and has made statements such as “There’s nothing wrong with being a terrorist as long as you win”, the media fawns over him, and treats every word he utters as the Gospel.

@ Tripewriter and even if it were true (and god knows they’ve been caught out lying so many times I doubt it is) and they were “only” throwing flares and smoke grenades at the Japanese they are still a bunch of dangerous thugs.

If I was operating a commerical vessel and these people hauled up alongside me without permission I’d assume hostile intent and drive over the top of them.

And those are not flash bangs, they are flares, flash bangs are an entirely different thing as any real reporter would have actually found out. Perhaps this one could tell us about the “protest action” off Somalia as well.

With regards to McDonalds not allowing access to websites showing advertisements which are inappropriate for children- perhaps they should start teaming up with the companies whose adverts are a problem. For instance, they could go with Trojan Condoms: “I’m Glovin’ It!”

This guy is a joke. I read somewhere on the net that he studied some economics in the past, but I suspect he didn’t, he in fact reading/studying about Harry Potter’s fantasy & school children books. It is obvious that he studied children fantasy and not economics because he is clueless. Perhaps Mr Cunliffe, may want to take some accelerated tutorials in economics from 2 our local fine economists from Canterbury University, Dr. Paul Walker & Dr Eric Crampton. I am sure that Mr Cunliffe will be very well informed in economics after doing some accelerated economics training with Walker & Crampton.

Heads up for David Cunliffe. Read the followings which will educate you on economics reality.

#1) Finance and economic breakdown – modeling Minskys financial instability hypothesis (originally appeared in Journal of Post Keynesian Economics)

#2) The Nonlinear Dynamics of Debt Deflation (Originally appeared in the journal of Complexity & Evolution )

Stop reading kindergarten/children’s fantasy books Mr. Cunliffe and start educating yourself fact-based economics. The policies you’re advocating, are the very same ones that the papers above showed is what caused disasters.

Just turn off the Internet altogether, you don’t have to provide it and at the moment all you are doing is leaving your selves exposed to the whining of about 3 people and the concomintant negative publicity.

Who cares if the service is really convenient for people to email and surf legitmate sites, fuck the majority, let a small minority run out lives.

The coffee served at McDonald’s at the Reading Centre in Wellington beats a lot of the fancier, more expensive, and half-cup-full options served up elsewhere.

It has flavour, is straight-forward, it’s $2.90 for a large cup, and they give you a full cup.

What is it about coffee shops in Wellington that they can’t give you a full cup of coffee?

It’s been a continuing sore with me for years.

My children, if they take me to a cafe, make me go and find a table and they order my long black (or whatever it is) for me because they have found it embarrassing when I’ve asked the coffee-pourer (I believe they’re known as baristas) for a full cup of coffee.

‘Of, you want some more water?’

‘No, I want more than half a cup, please.’

They look perplexed and confused. To me it is very simple — you fill up the cup, not half-fill it.

English sets a high limit for foreign sales of our farmland.

Our farming is family based units. Absentee-foreign ownership means company farming.

With Red China swooping upstream into commodity providers, this means farmland will go to the Beijing Reds.

Already, a Chinese agribusiness is set to take control of one of our biggest agribusinesses, PGG Wrightson. What makes this interesting is that PGG Wrightson has the country’s core seed business with property rights to the grasses developed by our scientists and farmers over more than a century and underpin our key pastoral export industry. IMHO, PGG Wrightson should be forced to sell the seeds business to NZ-only investors as a condition of permission for PGG Wrightson control going to China.

If we’re trying to get NZers to be more apathetic about things I suppose that’d be the way to go. McDonalds say they can be convinced otherwise about what sites it blocks, and it looks like this is what some are trying to do.

In all seriousness though, Maccas did the right thing by blocking the sites. If they hadn’t, it would only be a matter of time until some nancy complained on talkback (longtime caller/first-time listener) that her son/daughter accessed a “Gay” site at a family restaurant on their iPod. How can Maccas win?

I got a video with my espresso machine which explained what you should be doing is stop the pour once the liquid coming from the coffee holder thingy changes from dark to light brown. This is because apparently, if you keep going beyond that point it makes the coffee bitter. That holder thingy it’s like a tea bag, once you’ve got the main guts the rest is dregs, all the flavour/goodness is gone, what’s the point.

I tried it both ways, full pour and also, as per the video, stopping the pour then topping up with water. The latter seriously does taste stronger, sweeter, better. I have it black no sugar so it wasn’t that, in case you’re wondering.

…and it looks like this is what some are trying to do.

Doesn’t it. With that particular group’s usual lack of consideration that there may actually be other groups that don’t chose to expose their children to their particular lifestyle at their children’s particular stage of development. Selfish, aren’t they.

“Nearly 500 tonnes of chilled sheep and beef worth more than $300 million are to be exported to high end United Arab Emirates supermarket chain Spinneys.”
Do the arithmetic.
That works out at $600 per kilogram.
Chris Gardner is the repeater who wrote that crap.

Another Liarbore hypocrisy in todays Herald: the call to Monday-ise the holidays that Mallard – at that time Liarbore’s spokesman for labour just a year ago, said there were no plans for.

What’s the matter Phil? Not feeling the love?

Anyway, how come Liarbore didn’t do it if they care so very much about it?
