In a surprise move today, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has declare a “War on Cyclones”

after TC Yasi devastated the north Queensland coastal communities of Mission Beach and Tully early

this morning.

A spokesapparatchik for the PM said “Yasi is pretty obviously an Islamic name, and their attack on

a Mission is a blatant attack on our Christian way of life. It’s time to strike back with

everything we’ve got”.

The Australian government has asked for US assistance under the ANZUS treaty to launch cruise

missiles armed with nuclear weapons against future cyclones. If that’s not enough we’ll slaughter

a few hundred thousand Moslem women and children from Indonesia.

US President Barack Obama couldn’t be reached for comment, but future President Palin was seen

frothing at the mouth, which is usually a sign that Jihad is about to commence.

Nature will do it’s own thing. Man has no answer. Tax will not solve pollution or large wastage of natural resources.

Governments all have structural debt, because they have huge administration to regulate and control populations.
The elephant in the room is Civil Servant Pension obligations.

Egypt unrest will have a huge impact on oil/gas prices.

Stephen Franks has taken issue with quake victims in Canterbury not doing small repairs & generally helping themselves. It seems that many are waiting for the EQC or other agencies to help them.

I wonder whether much of their reluctance to do their own small repairs stems from a fear of dirty stinking lowlife slimy insurance companies refusing to honour unrelated damage claims maybe many years down the track on the basis of todays nonprofessional work.

The scummy bastards have refused claims using that excuse before.

All will be resolved, of course, when the racists get the right price.

Wellington’s new wharewaka building will be opened on Sunday without the signature waka it was specifically built to house. Wharewaka o Poneke Charitable Trust chairman Sir Ngatata Love said yesterday that Kara Puketapu, chief executive of the Waiwhetu runanga, would not release Te Raukura or another waka from the runanga’s museum.

The two boats will therefore not be at the elaborate Waitangi Day dawn ceremony on Sunday. Instead, two waka from Whakatane will take their place.

Long-running talks involving Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, Dr Puketapu and Sir Ngatata, aimed at returning Te Raukura, known as “Wellington’s waka”, broke down at Waiwhetu yesterday.

The creaming of the taxpayer continues.

Capital & Coast District Health Board confirmed it paid for acting chief executive Shaun Drummond to fly to Townsville to visit family at weekends, but is refusing to say how much it cost. The board had a $47 million deficit last financial year.

Why does the minister tolerate this? I expect Mr Ryall to act decisively.

Scots College could have picked a more tactful time for announcing lavish plans for its Wellington pupils’ education, but why hold back when you’re rich and private?

Many parents of Scots pupils sacrifice to send their sons there, but equally talented and intelligent kids go without amenities that would help them reach their full potential. It’s not fair, and life isn’t fair, as rich people are fond of observing with a little sigh – but does the gap between rich and poor have to be trumpeted quite so joyfully?

What’s the truth behind this issue? Is it a joke or a victory for the “multi-culti” supporters?

Staff at Sky City casino in Auckland will be striking on Chinese New Year to protest discrimination against Chinese workers.

A full 12-hour shift strike has been organised for the casino from 8pm this evening.

A workers union claims Chinese staff are targets for discrimination because the company has introduced a policy that prevents them from using their legal rights to access holiday leave for 17 days from today. The policy affects around a third of the casino’s employees who are Chinese.

Not sure Manolo..it sounds as if the employer is saying no time off at all at this time which sounds a bit unreasonable but then CNY is not a public hioliday here..I would say Unite are just attention seeking and base building. In countries where CNY is really celebrated , people have to visit others for the first four days then there is a celebration at the end of CNY. They do not have the whole time off. I imagine many of these workers are foreign born and so wanting to travel home to their families at this time. As I said earlier, it is probably something that needs to be rostered and negotiated.

About Angus, the Children’s Commissioner, the story in The Dominion Post yesterday and its editorial today disregards why we have such a person and office in the first place.

But the greater scandal in the paper this morning concerns the wharewaka business. A building in Wellington put up to display a couple of wakas is going to be opened on Sunday, but the wakas it’s built for won’t be there.

It seems a couple of Maori potentates can’t agree on it. But the wakas, and the building, have been constructed with a great deal of ratepayer and taxpayer help.

What is interesting in Rosemay McLeods Scots column is that she gives the fees as $9900 to $13,200 per year.

Now NZs education budget is $12 billion dollars per year. If that amount goes to say 1.2 million people (there are 850,000 Kiwis aged between 0-14 years), that is $10,000 per kid.

Anne Tolley says that secondary schools get $6700 per kid ($5500 for primary).

We could abolish the education dept and give out the $10,000 per kid in vouchers and anybody could send their kid to Scots.

I’ll give you a hand.
The reason people of yore lived so well is not lack of meat but the fact that they ate WAY less sugar + carbs than we (collectively) do now and weren’t subjected to artificial processing of some foods. Also there was the huge influence of way less stress.
But all was not rosy back in the dark ages, iron ages, stone ages. They tended to work themselves to death and disease was rampant.

All evolution requires is that people survive long enough to have and raise kids that survive long enough to have and raise kids. The link between red meat and colorectal cancer is pretty established, though it’s more a link with excessive consumption of red meat than any red meat at all.

It’s unlikely that our evolutionary ancestors could ever dream of access to as much red meat as we have today, but even if they did, they would have been unlikely to get the cancer before having a chance to reproduce.

Known as tactical voting dear boy, oh Hide could well keep around 75% of the votes he got last time, but both the Greens and Labour would far rather get rid of ACT than win Epsom themselves.
Dirty pool, of course, people would have forgotten about a childs identity being stolen and the perk buster bludging, oh with the run into the election Labour will be showing the incident on tv about a child often.
You are an innocent dear boy, it is not the ones who will vote for Hide it is the Labour, Green etc voters who will vote National that matter.

One of the dirty little tricks Labour could pull, a door knocking scheme asking punters in Epsom if they are in favour of a MP who helped make a crim an MP.

Would it piss some off who would have voted Labour, of course, and they will vote for the nice Nat candidate.

That will always be a matter of opinion. But educating is not that hard, if there is a model that appears to work well it will be copied or expanded. But there would certainly be some variety and the most important factor is to put a kid in the right environment for them. If you are paying directly for your education, people treat it with more respect.

I went to both Scots and Aotea College. The main difference is the kids and their families want to be there at Scots, at Aotea, they don’t care because they don’t pay. There is not so much difference in the teachers or the resources.

No, rather we evolved to digest animal proteins– but thjs would be an infrequent part of our ancient diet. While the human digestive system is very adaptable and a wide range of diets seem ‘healthy’, extreme diets are not. The modern Western diet with its emphasis on meats, fats and sugars- combined with sedentary lifestyles- is not something we have evolved to consume and the health problems linked to it (diabetes, heart-disease, various cancers) is symptomatic of that.

Unemployment jumped to 6.8 per cent in the December quarter, rising from 6.4 per cent in September, as the economic recovery stalled at the end of last year.

Unemployment rose by 8000 to reach 158,000 during the December quarter, marked by a 10,000 jump in male unemployment.

In seasonally adjusted terms, unemployment rose to 6.8 per cent during the December 2010 quarter as unemployment rose and employment fell, Statistics New Zealand said.

The unemployment rate was 6.4 per cent in the September 2010 quarter and 7.0 per cent a year ago.

“Results over the past twelve months indicate that the labour market has struggled to gain momentum following the recent economic downturn,” labour market statistics manager Peter Gardiner said.

The New Zealand dollar fell sharply on the data, from around US77.75c when the figures came out at 10.45am to US77.25c by 11.30am. The kiwi was also down from around A77.10c against the Australian dollar to A76.50c.

While the December quarter showed the labour market getting worse again, key indicators are showing an improvement since this time last year, he said, with lower unemployment and positive annual employment growth.

Employment fell by 11,000 to 2,182,000 during the December 2010 quarter. Full-time employment increased, while part-time employment decreased.

I have not read the full context of the Franks remarks so apologies if I get it wrong.
Having had many dollars compulsorily extracted from my pocket for what I now consider a very poor form of insurance cover that would be far more efficiently handled by the private sector I do not consider myself a whinger.
The damage to my property is not structural to any significant extent but should I rectify it without going through the ‘correct’ channels I see all sorts of fish-hooks from the inane regulatory protocols surrounding the consent / LIM / building recording and inspection by incompetents that Mr Franks’ colleagues in the law business use as the last word in land transaction law.
Apart from a significant fissure in our washouse that an engineer has certified as not a threat to the integrity of the building and could be rectified with a reseal and re-tiling, our most significantl expensewise problem is reinstating paths,patios and landscaping from minor land settlement that I could reinstate without any significant cost other than colorcrete.
However the whole bureaucratic requirements will have to be satisfied or when the property is sold a raft of legalese will be opened up for a lawyer versed in minutiae to cause grief to the sale process.
I think the whole EQC setup should face a serious review when the dust settles with so many things that the sheeple thought were covered and it turns out were not. I have heard of anecdotal evidence of serious differences in handling of claims that seem to be very similar, ie painting one wall of a room versus painting the whole room and major discrepancy in under and over estimating property claims under $10 000.
As one patiently waiting for a visit from the teams who seem singularly inept at any degree of efficiently covering the rural are it is an exercise in entertainment. One pair did a property inspection in the head of Lyttleton Harbour then punched the next address ino the GPS. Some hours later the got to the next call via Purau, Port Levy, Little pigeon Bay, Pigeon Bay and over the summit to Akaroa. A smigeon of common sense would have had them return to SH 75 via Gebbies Pass to Akaroa in about 1/3 the time.

and neither will any of his offspring. There are always exceptions however as a devout muslim

I’m not in favour of everything Muslim but it’s ironic that immigrants are accused of not integrating when there’s so many people who are bigoted against them. Its like “come here you f ..ing @$%, come and integrate into our culture.” I can only admire the qualities of someone like El Masri (although I don’t know his story in detail) who has risen up in a culture that in many quarters is openly racist to Lebanese (‘Lebos’) and succeeded amongst bigoted people like you.

How is it Lions and Tigers have survives so long as species?

Red meat is linked to colorectal cancer in humans. I don’t know if any studies have been done on lions and tigers, though given they’re entirely carnivorous, I can’t imagine what their diet would be compared to. However, if their systems are similar enough to ours to get cancer from meat similarly to us, I expect they simply don’t live long enough for that to be a problem.

Tigers don’t live much longer than 15 years. It generally takes cancers of any kind much longer to develop than that, except in particularly tragic cases.

You’re implying that if too much meat is bad for human health then it must also be bad for lions. But they’re a completely different species which has evolved in a completely different way. You may as well ask why human can’t live on a diet of grass – cows do just fine.

Natural selection would certainly select for cancer immunity because males can have offspring well into their dotage

The sad thing is (and please correct me and accept my apology if I’m wrong) is that philu forces his dogs to be vegan. I just did a quick Google, and found that this is actually not uncommon.

Now dogs are pretty hardy creatures and can live off nearly any scraps they can get, but they’ve naturally carnivores. As a pet owner you should be acting in the best interest of your animal, and I find it quite cruel to change its natural diet because of your own mucked-up beliefs.

Not that I want to get involved in the details of any person’s academic credentials, but I can speak from experience as a former member of the Political Studies Department at Auckland University on the subject of MA degrees (I was, among other things, on the graduate committee for a while). There were, and with some modifications still are, two types of MA degree–those granted after successful submission of an MA thesis, and those done via papers only (and now a research portfolio of smaller essays). It is possible for people who took papers-only MA degrees in the 1990s and very early 2000s to not have a thesis on file in the library or departmental office. That does not mean that they do not have a proper MA, even if the papers-only MA is considered to be the easy way out by the academic staff. Of course, now there are diplomas, certificates and god knows what else by way of credentials offered by my former department and others for a suitable fee.

Since this has been the subject of some discussion over the past few years, I have been meaning to try to clarify the various standards. Events conspired against me doing so today when, ironically, I am taking a break from marking essays for a foreign university.

Apparently this dog lived beyond 27 years – although the story reads like a “That’s Life” article and has only been published on pro-vegie websites! But so what if they live longer? We’d live longer if we never drank alcohol, never sat in the sun instead taking vit D tabs, and never smoked marijuana, but what a life.

Oh, and WTF, you vegans bring your dogs to banquets? Nine anaemic dogs. All in a row like sad Crafar cattle.

I think you should offer your dog a choice – two bowls: one a celery stick and a chopped carrot, and the other a beautiful fresh bloody steak. Let it decide what is for dinner once a week or so. Come on, give the poor thing a treat. 😀 (I’m not serious, our dog had his testes cut out and will likely die a virgin, so I can’t in good conscience give you shit about this.)
