President Obama’s attempts to move to the political centre have been more cosmetic than concrete, author and former General Electric CEO Jack Welch told CNBC.

Speaking as the president tries to find common ground with the new Republican-led House of Representatives, Welch said the supposed shift from the president’s liberal base hasn’t amounted to much as far as policy is concerned.

The guy with the black eye in court had had the snot kicked out of him and one looter was left tied to a pole for the cops.

The looters caught by the police are the lucky one.

‘Corpse’ Gaddafi should step down – Kremlin source

Moscow, March 1 – A Kremlin source called Muammar Gaddafi a “living political corpse” and said on Tuesday the Libyan leader should step down.

Russia rarely criticises authoritarian leaders, but President Dmitry Medvedev last week condemned Gaddafi’s use of violence against protesters calling for his overthrow and said continued bloodshed would be a crime under international law.

The Kremlin source told reporters it was time for Gaddafi to step down, calling him “a living political corpse who has no place in the modern civilised world.”

Moscow supported a U.N. Security Council resolution on Saturday calling for an arms embargo and other sanctions.

In Aus this week. Just got a text that the Eastbourne [Wellington] ferry has sunk and ambulances streaming around to Worser Bay (which clearly suggests the incident/sinking happened closer to Seatoun than Days Bay.)

Does anyone have any more detail?

Bill English just can’t help himself, can he?

In one breath he acknowledges we are almost certainly now heading into a double dip recession, thanks largely to his tax cuts, but made certain by the quake, and, in classic mirror-image of standard economics, is looking to slash all sorts of spending. If he can get away with it. I wonder how cutting WFF will help the quake victims?

The last double dip recession we had that I remember was the recession that started under Labour before Bolger took over and allowed Richardson and Shipley to run riot with their twisted economics. When he almost lost the next election, then he saw the light and got rid of Richardson and turned into a pretty good PM – just a pity he gave the Black Prince (Birch) so much rope.

The lesson is, in a recession, don’t cut spending!

And don’t skew tax cuts to give the rich a break they don’t need.

I suppose it’s good news for Goff, but it’s bad news for most people.

Thanks I2. The second photo looks pretty awful. I guess it is too soon to expect Stuff to have much in the way of detail on cause or injuries. I hope all are OK.

On a different note, the course I am on was interrupted by one of the presenters yesterday at 10:51 local time to share in the two minutes of silence. A nice touch – very respectful of them.

You make statements & then contradict them yourself. You assert that English would slash WFF & spend the money on rebuilding Christchurch then offer advice to not cut spending. You also neglect that the money is borrowed in the first place.

If you took out a loan for $500 you could spend it at the supermarket or you could buy $500 worth of building materials & erect a fence. Either way two things are certain 1) you now owe $500, 2) You have spent $500. The only difference is where you’ve spent it……same with the government.

No one other than Labour/Greens has suggested bugger all about new taxes be they for the rich or the poor.

Try to get your shit into one sock.

Comments elsewhere on this seem to be meet with it “isn’t a real problem.”
However people are still staying in houses they wouldn’t, just to protect property.
Police still report, as they did this morning, quake associated opportunist crime.

Just one case needs be bought forward under the National Emergency and see what the sentence is? Not all the liquifaction has been shovelled up yet has it?

Gold futures closed at a record high and silver futures advanced to a fresh three-decade high on Tuesday as simmering tensions in the Middle East and North Africa, along with fears of inflation, drew investors to the metals.

Recent events in Madison Wisconsin have brought to my attention something that i was prevoiusly
unaware of. Namely that in the past it was considered not OK for state/federal employees to
unionise and collectivley bargain for income and ‘entitlements’ Even FDR agreed with this principle.
Its the erosion of that which has led to many problems from Reagan having to fire the air traffic
controllers to the present situation with many states facing bankruptsy.

How might this translate to New Zealand ? Lets take education for example.

Standards are falling, more and more school leavers are unable to read and write properly
(maybe up to 30%) others, deemed by the secondary school as ready for university are deemed
not to be by the university. The whole system seems to be being dumbed down to a lower and
lower denominator.
This decline is matched by a corresponding rise in influnce and militancy by the teachers assns/union.

i would improve things by;
Removing the right to bargain for salary increases from the teachers associations/unions, have that determined
by a Higher Salaries type setup. Compensate them with a pay increase, but that any and all future increases
are linked to productivity and the current salary levels to remain as a base. So for example if this years
increase was 5% and half the teachers had a majority of students who reached a pre deternined level
then they would receive a 10% increase and the others remain on the base rate.
A teacher who had no productivity for, say 3 years would be retrained or dismissed.
Headmasters and department heads would get productivity payment based on their teachers levels.
The training colleges would raise standards, change culture and begin ‘weeding the garden’ ie student
teachers not reaching the required standard would make a career path adjustment, ie be fired.
Training college tutors would be paid productivity at a rate based on the first 5 years payments
made to their graduates to incentivise them to turn out teachers who could perform.

Happy with that ?

OK whats next ? Housing, welfare, quangos, GDP increase, treaty, defence, immigration ?

I’ve down an about face on this, congratulations on signing such a great deal for the tax payer.

The government is paying for the purchase, but sell them back to BMW at the same price, and , I don’t think they pay any servicing costs.

It’s still bobbing around just off Worser Bay. Police and Pilot boat loitering. Tug boat was there but has gone home. Looks like they’ve got the water out as it’s no longer nose-down. Engines still working. I’m guessing they’re waiting for the wind to drop so they can take in back to port.

It is inappropriate for Bill English or any other commentator to talk about cuts to the Welfare system at this time. This debate concerning from where we source revenue for reconstruction can happen at any time in the future when the matter is at hand.
There is no problem with planning in private, or discussing general terms publicly, ie a levy, but out of respect for the deceased and displaced those matters can be attended at a later stage.

WFF is a targeted tax rebate which has the effect of giving certain people a very high marginal tax rate and encouraging others to reduce their apparent income via a trust in order to get it. It’s a mess and it’s certainly not a ‘tax cut’.

It’s ‘socialism by stealth’. Apparently John Key said that; he must have forgotten.

Shunda, stop for one second and think about it. As a small business owner, all WFF is doing is giving you back some of your own money. Far better for you to have kept it in the first place, rather than have the government steal it, keep some in administration and kickback costs then return a small portion to you.

WFF for people in your position is churn of the worst kind. Of course, so many are now “reliant” on it they can’t see it as that and it has become a sacred cow. Income redistribution at its worst.

I can accept that, but now that it is here and people are relying on it, it is a lot harder to change.
I would prefer a simple tax cut, but I also think the idea of helping families specifically can only good for our society.
Any changes would have to be done in a gradual transition, it would create havoc if it wasn’t.

It is my sincere hope (note, I hope I do not expect) that the intellectual midget from Dipton will be spending his days quietly working out how to bring New Zealand back from the brink of economic collapse. It is my opinion that the best way to accomplish this is to implement, in a sensible, staged manner, the recommendations from the four Working Groups that have been set up to advise the government (2025 Taskforce, Welfare WG, Tax WG, Savings WG).

New Zealand and New Zealanders *must* be cured of their addiction to other people’s money (and, in the case of WFF, getting some of their own money back and thinking it’s other people’s).

Note that doing this is not an appropriate response to the Christchurch tragedy (it would take too long) but a way to cure New Zealand of its collective economic suicide pact, reverse decades of velvet glove socialism and actually get some real growth into the economy.

WRT the middle east and Oman in particular the CS Monitor has a good article about why Oman is different.

The Sultan made education a priority. Today, the country has more than 1,000 public schools and more than 40 institutions of higher education, both public and private. Over those 40 years, Oman experienced one of the steepest climbs up the human development index run by the UN Development Program – outperforming even China’s rise.

Oil, of course, helped the country develop, but so too did Qaboos’s decision to funnel much of the oil money into education and heavy industry.

Incredible amount of money wasted on the memory of a deeply corrupt American politician.

In the 2009 federal budget, $5,813,000 was appropriated to the project through the Labor Department and Department of Health & Human Services spending bill. In the 2010 budget, $13,600,000 was funneled through the from the Department of Labor and the Department of Health and Human Services and another $18,900,000 through the Defense Department spending bill.

In April of last year, Massachusetts Democratic Sen. John Kerry and Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Edward Markey attempted to insert another $8 million more in the now defunct Omnibus bill.

With $38.3 million already in the Institutes’s coffers and Kennedy’s wife Vicki pushing hard for more, Andre Lafferty and the Traditional Values Coalition are keeping a sharp eye, hoping to prevent any more federal funds from going to Kennedy’s centre.

Shady, it is generally accepted that the moon can have some influence on earthquakes. What has not been proven is being able to predict the place, time and size of earthquakes by any method, and it’s absurd to think the moon influence could be used to predict with any useful degree of accuracy.

I haven’t seen any prediction from Ring that has any useful degree of accuracy. Insinuating accuracy (which Ring does, especially after the event) is causing Christchurch people problems.

Thanks for the pointer I’ll give it a try. I recall seeing Jamie Oliver dress linguine in a lemon/olive oil emulsion. We have a pasta machine now so have been making extra wide fettuccine and lots of ravioli. Fresh spinach and ricotta ravioli in sage butter is very sexy. Lots of fun to make as well. The wife and I can knock out a 100 or so big ravs in about an hour and as yet we haven’t come to blows. Quite extraordinary. I’ve been doing a fresh fettuccine with savoy cabbage and bacon and a light white wine and cream sauce.

Umm. hungry now.

Group seeks Maori judge to settle waka ownership

Maori parties to the legal dispute over Wellington’s waka have asked for a leading Maori judge to be in charge of a settlement conference.

Wellington City Council lawyer Craig Stevens called the request “surprising”, and High Court judge Forrie Miller said it could be misinterpreted as “judge shopping”.

The council is suing Te Runanganui O Taranaki Whanui Ki Te Upoko O Te Ika A Maui Association and Te Maori Cultural Centre in Lower Hutt for the return of the waka Te Raukura. The two parties asked for Justice Joe Williams to be in charge of a court-based settlement conference. Justice Williams, a fluent speaker of Maori, was formerly chief Maori Land Court judge and Waitangi Tribunal chairman.

You need to watch only a few minutes of cable news analysis to realise just how ludicrous our national energy policies have become. As escalating tensions and chaos unfold in Egypt, Libya and other Middle Eastern nations, one energy analyst suggested that if Libyan oil supplies were to fail, the United States would rely on Saudi Arabia for its oil needs. If that statement alone doesn’t put U.S. leaders on red alert, the looming national energy crisis may soon become reality.

The Obama administration is repeating the mistakes of President Jimmy Carter’s failed energy policies, which marred his term and stigmatised the 1970s. They are leading us straight into another national energy disaster.
