Anyone who’s trading in the commodities market? Here is something that may be of interest. It was published last year.

Log-Periodic Oscillation Analysis and Possible Burst of the “Gold Bubble” in April – June 2011

The authors have updated their analysis with the following paper. Here is a brief quote from the paper:

This article continues our analysis of the gold price dynamics that was published in December 2010 (http://arxiv.org/abs/1012.4118) and forecasted the possibility of the “burst of the gold bubble” in April – June 2011. Our recent analysis suggests the possibility of one more substantial fluctuation before the final collapse in July 2011. On the other hand, in early 2011 we detected a number of other commodity bubbles and forecasted the start of their collapse in May – June 2011. We demonstrate that this collapse has actually begun, which in conjunction with the forthcoming burst of the gold bubble suggests that the World System is entering a bifurcation zone bearing rather high risks of the second wave of the global financial-economic crisis.

I have implemented this model (standard version – there are different more advanced variants) but it hasn’t gone into the production version of my software, because I still have doubts about its claim.

Imagine a capital gains tax was in place now as proposed. The Labour Party calculations by Berl Economics on page six estimated an annual price appreciation rate of 3.5%. Using this as a basis, this would give an annual increase in the first twelve months of $8,750 on which tax would later be payable of $1,312.

THIS AMOUNT OF TAX IN THE FIRST YEAR IS THE EQUIVALENT TO $25 PER WEEK.

I would conclude that over time rents would need to adjust by an equivalent amount to maintain the current position, if a similar number of landlords would be expected to facilitate supply of accommodation.

The other major factor which effects Rent levels is interest rates… and they are forecast to rise from later this year. Planning a new tax on landlords to apply 2013 might not be ideal for those who might want to rent housing.

Take away the emotive language and focus on facts. The Average property Investor is not a high income earner and may have one to three properties. Trying to save for retirement so as to ring fence themselves from Government!

Summary: CGT + interest rate rise = rent rise

The party set up a website under the heading “Own our Future” which featured prominently a video presented by finance spokesman David Cunliffe all about the party’s tax policy.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Women in Labour. Great keywords for the New Labour website that was supposed to be all about CGT.

I thought we already had a capital gains tax in NZ – but it only applied to people who actually bought and sold in order to make a capital gain. And the rate is higher than 15%. So what Labour are proposing is that the ‘little people’, who ‘accidentally’ make a capital gain will get clobbered.

Also, Australia have had capital gains tax for years. And have you seen how that has controlled prices in the Sydney, Melbourne and Brisban property markets!

You’re right.

But it was all about the IRD being able to prove that you bought the house to make money, that was the hard part.

Everybody said that they bought the house for their kids who were going to move into it in 15 years time, but in the mean time they had over committed and needed to sell, oops sorry, and I made a slight profit in the mean time ,oops sorry.

The IRD did enforce it a bit especially on people buying apartments and sections off developers plans and selling again prior to settlement.

What is ludicrous about labours proposal is, you might own a rental for 20 years, put up with all the damage , the skipped rents , the tenants that you can’t move out without taking days off work to appear in Court and all the other shit that goes with being a landlord and then still have to pay tax when you sell it.

The housing market is such now that there will not be the speculation that was rife, especiallly in the cities three – 4 years ago. The majority of people in rentals are either proffessionals or mums and dads with a house or two using them as a super scheme so they can pay their own health bills etc and wont need the government to see them to the grave.

Phil Goff’s biggest problem

In most of his interviews (and yes, again launching Labour’s CGT) he looks uncomfortable with his message. He looks like he’s saying what he thinks he has to say, and not what he feels and believes.

He’s been in politics long enough to be familiar with dealing with media interviews, so it’s not inexperience.

Goff looks like he is an uncomfortable party puppet, a party that is dragging him in directions he’s not comfortable with.

We do have a form of CGT on land – not just those transactions where someoone buys with the intnetion of selling. A modest subdivision of, say a rural lifestyle block, large urban section or farm is likely to be taxed if the scheme is started with 10 years of acquisition. Gains made if a propoerty is rezoned and this adds to the value (15%, I think) can be taxable. A major subdivision of a property is taxable regardless of the date of acquisition. Unfortunately these rules are so complex ( esp in the case of smaller subdivisions) that it is difficult to know the position before it is too late.

Goff reminds me exactly of Helen Clark in his spoken delivery. Just compare video of the two. He could be her clone.

Both have this patronizing, smarmy manner of chuckling and smiling when they answer a question, as though they know the answer because they’re smarter than you, and the person asking the question (or with an opposing point of view) is stupid and doesn’t know what they’re talking about. The manner of delivery is the way you’d explain something to a child or an idiot.

This kind of thing doesn’t go over well with adults, who don’t like to be treated with contempt or made to feel stupid because their point of view differs with his.

Just watched David Parker on The Nation saying he was resolutely behind Phil Goff as leader, as he squirmed in his seat and looked away.

Missed most of the interview about CGT, but Garner then pushed Parker on the age of eligibility of Super “because Goff said Labour will address the big issues that National won’t”.

Parker said Labour are not discussing that – “one thing at a time”.

I’d hope a major party could multi task.

Garner on The Nation talked to Gareth Morgan on the CGT, and I pretty much agree with him.

He congratulates Labour for bringing CGT up and putting it on the table, but says there are some many loopholes in their version you could drive a bus through them.

He also criticises National’s initial reaction.

Morgan says that political parties won’t do the hard things necessary unless they are made to by the public. I agree.

The best thing that can happen now is to open up debate on CGT, and
– force Labour to get sensible with a decent version
– force National to also agree to the benefits of CGT and consider adding one.

Then either way we can get what we want – and a proper non-politicised version.

I’m not anti-CGT nor anti-Labour, I’m anti poor political process.

Some stark choices await the White House if they can’t get a deal to raise the debt ceiling. No pay for federal workers, active duty military, Justice Dept, FAA, etc. On top of that a credit downgrade will increase interest payments.

Its starting to look very ugly.

…When the debt ceiling was reached on May 16, the Treasury undertook what it called “extraordinary measures” to borrow from various accounts. That freed up about $232 billion to tide it through the next few months while Congress and the White House worked out a budget plan.

That cash cushion has been melting away; it rose briefly in June as tax payments and other receipts exceeded outlays. But it’s on a downward track toward zero sometime in early August. The Treasury projects that it will be flat broke on August 2, with no way to raise enough cash to cover all the bills.

On or about that date, government officials have to begin making hard choices. For August, the Treasury projects it will take in roughly $172.4 billion to cover $306.7 billion worth of spending that, by law, it has to pay. To demonstrate what those choices might look like, Jerome Powell and his colleagues at the Bipartisan Policy Center took a look at how far the money would go.

They started with the widely held assumption that interest on the debt ($29 billion for August alone) would be paid first, thus avoiding the disastrous impact of a default.

The rest of the incoming cash would cover a month’s worth of Social Security ($49.2 billion), Medicare and Medicaid ($50 billion), veterans affairs programs ($2.9 billion), education and tuition programs ($14 billion), housing assistance for the poor ($6.7 billion), food stamps ($9.3 billion), and unemployment insurance ($12.8 billion).

That’s where the cash runs out and the list of unfunded programs begin. There would be no money left for defense contracts ($31.7 billion) or military active duty pay ($2.9 billion).

The Department of Justice ($1.4 billion) would close, shutting down the federal court system and halting operations at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. So would the Department of Energy ($3.5 billion), including national nuclear energy programs.

The Transportation Department ($1.3 billion) would cease functioning, including the Federal Aviation Administration and air traffic control system. So would the Centers for Disease Control ($0.5 billion).

And there would be no money to cover tax refunds ($3.9 billion) from the IRS. Even if there were, there would be no federal workers ($14.2 billion in salaries and benefits) to mail the checks.

PETE G…You, Morgan,DPF, and Labour may feel the people need to be taxed more. I don’t. I think the Government and Business are making satisfactory progress. I am alarmed at the amount being borrowed by the Government but I think this can be reversed by elimination of waste and downsizing government. There is absolutely no reason why National need to consider or debate any Labour proposal to raise extra tax. John KEY has already stated that to impose such a tax would stop productivity in its tracks. I agree with him.

ONE of the nation’s big four banks expects the Reserve Bank will soon slash interest rates, while some of Australia’s most prominent businessmen have warned that the European debt crisis and struggling Australian households are slamming the economy into reverse.

As Julia Gillard attempts to sell a sceptical public the carbon tax, which she acknowledges represents a massive economic transition, business leaders are warning that the carbon tax debate is about to be overwhelmed by international events they fear could spark a second global financial crisis.

Westpac economist Bill Evans yesterday reversed the bank’s long-held view that the next move in interest rates would be up, saying things had turned so bad so quickly that rates could be slashed over the next 12 months by 100 basis points. If passed on in full, this would slash the current standard variable home rate of about 7.8 per cent to 6.8 per cent.

Jimbob it’s really bad for the farmers which hits National and mum and dad property developers which hits Labour. Since those two games are big in NZ relative to total population this is why it’s not been on the agenda till now. (Since the mum and dad property developers went to the Greens.)

I’m surprised they want to tax businesses. What would happen to the economy if a CGT was applied to public companies and partnerships as well? Imagine a 15% tax on an M&A on a large public company. So if they don’t do it in that commercial arena, why are they taxing single proprietor owned businesses? What’s the logic there?

Assuming that’s what they’re doing, is it?

I’m in favour of a CGT, but well designed and implemented when good times are here not now, and not for the foreseeable future either. We are in for a long hard haul globally so why waste time with long-term re-structuring policies that short-term: i.e. for 7 years create strong fiscal drag? Where is the sense in that?

Naturally it’s Silent-T’s diabolical plan to shaft Goff, everyone knows that, but Phil seems blissfully unaware. How curious.

Hong Kong has a personal tax rate of 15% and a business tax rate of 16.5% the place is booming and has been for the last 30 or 40 years. People live longer than here in New Zealand and seem to be at least as happy as us. It would seem to me to be the kind of system that we badly need but if that is so why has it not been introduced in the past, and this being the case I have some questions:

1/ What are the advantages and disadvantages of adopting such a system?
2/ What is stopping us introducing such a tax system?
3/ What would the effect be on the ordinary New Zealander

Whenever these idiots get into power, they dismantle or sabotage critical Hayekian infrastructural elements. Such as they implement minimum wage laws for example. This is classic Keynes vs Hayek.

Because the other arm of the Western lefty is the commie heritage, they’re also very very very expert at spin, propaganda, et al. If conservatives were half as good as lefties we would always be in power. See Liarbore have a very powerful weapon: the sympathy card. Their trump is they occupy the heart. The conservative occupies the mind.

This combo of Keynesian economics which they really believe and emotional pull successfully sabotages the economic rationalism which conservatives are capable of bringing to the party, if only we were allowed to.

I’m not suggesting people are taxed more, like Morgan I support less tax but more broadly based. Big difference. The simpler the better to avoid avoidance loopholes – and to avoid political parties using simplistic bullshit slogans because the tax is too complex.
