“…Does anyone believe for a minute the official line that our SAS commandos are merely acting as mentors to the Afghan police force’s Crisis Response Unit?
I guess none of us are really meant to swallow it – but it does give fig leaf cover for what their real role is.
It looks to me like we’ve become de facto commanders and heavyweights for the serious work of taking out the Afghan Government’s enemies in a civil war.
In previous eras, I suppose we’d call us mercenaries.
Whenever our soldiers are caught on camera in any melee – our elites in this country start singing the praises for our boys killing the bad guys.
It’s all good fun as none of our boys get hurt.
There’s only one exception, when one soldier got shot by “friendly fire”.
But that doesn’t count.
Our SAS are the new pin-ups.
They have received uncritical and even adulation by our press – where women are even encouraged by pap photo pieces to consider the dating attributes of our SAS heroes.
More seriously, they get well-deserved respect from their international counterparts.
So I am not surprised they want to stay in Afghanistan.
What does concern me, though, is that they have lobbied Prime Minister John Key to stay and he says he is considering that option.
Taking into account whether soldiers want to go or stay in any war theatre should never be a factor when making decisions like this…”

Labour has embarked on an attack on the PM for having displayed “sickening opportunism over [the] Norway attacks”, claiming that “he was quick to exploit Norway’s tragedy for political gain” by fabricating “an opportunity to justify continuing the military deployments in Afghanistan”.
The White House has posted a video of the ‘remarks to the press’ session [not a press conference- questions were not taken]: http://youtu.be/ikdHsoyoH14. They have also posted a transcript: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/07/22/remarks-president-obama-and-prime-minister-key-new-zealand . The only people to have claimed responsibility by this morning at 6am were Ansar al-Islam, but both President Obama and PM Key refused to attribute blame.
Labour edited the PM’s remarks, disregarding his associating himself with President Obama’s sympathy to Norway and cutting off the conditional clause from the PM’s statement. The relevant part of the PM’s words were: ‎”Similarly, I echo your sympathies and concern for that situation in Norway. If it is an act of global terrorism, I think what it shows is no country, large or small, is immune from that risk. And that’s why New Zealand plays its part in Afghanistan as we try and join others like the United States in making the world a safer place.”

Now: my question- what are the odds that [a] mainstream media will report the attempted beat-up? [b] join in with Labour? [c] ignore the issue because Labour’s lies have already been exposed, and if they run the story they’d have to apologise later?

@ GMM – as I have noted in the most recent comment on the blog-post I linked to, two Labour MP’s have publicly endorsed The Standard’s scumbaggery; Darien Fenton and Trevor Mallard. Push this on Twitter, especially if among your followers you have members of the MSM; there are a heck of a lot of journos hanging out on Twitter now, and it is an effective means of getting a story out there.

I have not been able to open the links to the actual comments but have read the transcripts posted. It seems to me that some comment was required by both Obama and Key in the circumstances and, given the information available, the qualified reference to global terrorism was justified. Even if the culprit was acting on his own, reference to terrorism was justified.

Comments on the Standard are not only sickening, they are dishonest. When you deliberately edit quotes to give another meaning, you are dishonest. So, the answer to your question about MSM is that some will report the issue without clarification of the actual quote, some will join with Labour and both groups will displayed their dishonesty.

We are in for a really dirty election campaign. There will be very little integrity shown. We have had it with the Israelis and the “small mines” issues this week. Unashamed use of personal tragedies to advance a political cause. We even had Goff refusing to be briefed because if he knew the truth he would not be able to criticise the Government. The underlying attitude toward Goff’s approach is scary — he would much rather exploitt rumour, gossip, innuendo and deception than get to the truth.

Fuck them all — Standard, Fenton, Mallard and Goff. NZ has a major issue with ethics – work ethic, honesty , contributions to society etc. With people like these nothing will improve. It starts from the top down and when the top is already in the sewer we’ve got trouble

Awhile back I stopped coming to Kiwiblog because of the strife here, Redbaiter etc, and went to the refreshingly good The Standard. But of late I have been sickened by the tone of The Standard. I wonder if the reason for this is the desperation of the Left as they see their hopes of getting back onto the Government benches slipping further and further away. They really are loosing the plot when they edit out pertinent qualifications in comments.

New Zealand is risking an American rebuke over one of this country’s pet aid projects, which brings hundreds of Pacific Islanders here to work for minimum wages picking fruit and grapes, warn high-level US sources.

Wellington sees the recognised seasonal employer scheme as charity, but Washington views it as verging on human trafficking and debt-bonded labour.

This comes as the US State Department’s latest international report on human trafficking condemned the use of forced labour on foreign charter fishing boats, exposed by the Sunday Star-Times.

By age 16, 36 per cent of kids are bored all or some of the time and one quarter want to leave school as soon as possible. Other OECD countries protect youth from unemployment – and its associated ills such as pregnancy, crime, drug and alcohol abuse – by exciting them with education.

By age 16 some years ago we in that category went to work on youth rates. Did we turn out to be illerate and unsuccessful.
I didn’t and I doubt that many other good people did either.
What will happen to this generation is another question.

To the point at hand, I don’t think anyone is suggesting some Pakeha (or, if you prefer, “non-Maori”) don’t abuse children. But where a demographic representing 10% of the population is responsible for 50% of the reported abuse cases, surely even a racist like you must admit there’s a causative link?

The government is being Criticised for making empty promises on New Zealand employment.

It follows comments by National cabinet minister Nick Smith about there being no quick fix to the unemployment situation.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says the May budget clearly stated the creation of 170,000 jobs, but since, thousands of people have lost their jobs.

He says it shows political puffery, and a promise that wasn’t worth the air it passed on.

“A budget statement should not contain such mythical statements, particularly when it should have been prepared with supporting evidence from government departments,” says Mr Peters.

He says people need jobs now and a sensible plan to get the economy moving again is long overdue.

No, the appropriate action for a Treasurer to take is hire someone with an entirely bogus CV to head your “economic advisory team”, take the advice of her and others in your office because you’re too lazy to process the information yourself, do a stunningly mediocre job as a result, then express wonderment when your patronage is at least partly responsible for landing her a job heading a government department, which she then proceeds to pervert to her own ends.

The greatest myth is Winston’s own reconstruction of his past, which is surely close to excusing one of the litany of disasters by claiming he was lied to by an evil leprechaun.

It was a joke when English wrote it three years ago and continues to be a joke. English and his dopey arsed little mate Smith are just that, a joke. Neither have any idea of what to do nor where to start other than believing in Fairy Tales like Global Warming and such shit.
While I would not vote for Winston I’m completely happy that he raises these issues and more if only to show up the shallowness of the highly paid Cabinet Ministers that once were his mates.
Of the brat pack the only one to make a difference has been Tony Ryall.
English and Smith need to join Shipley and Richardson on the benefits brigade.
Looking at Keys line up’s for the election, I’d say they are destined for that.

Here Rex is an example of the sort of stuff that Smith did. Now of course with an election coming its all getting reversed.
Not saying there wasn’t plenty to do but this wasn’t one of the items worth pursuing. All ACC did was blame everything other than a physical injury on people getting older. but a few court cases that they didn’t win and Smith is all sweetness and nice again. Fucking hypocritical wanker he is.

Nick Smith’s hysterical claims about the financial state of ACC have now been widely discredited, and even Smith himself is now trying to back away from them by claiming a miraculous financial turnaround in just 18 months.

Smith and the National government used the financial crisis to make a number of changes to ACC that undermine some of the central principles behind the scheme. The changes that they made to compensation for victims of work-related hearing loss illustrate it well.

If this were other countries I’d suggest the demands would have been for the police remove the electrodes because he’d tell all. Given that it’s Norway it’s more likely he’s demanding better quality room service. 🙂

On December 28, 2010, the European law enforcement agency EuroPol issued a media release about extensive defrauding of the European Union emissions trading system.

EuroPol reported that it had raided several hundred offices throughout Europe and had arrested more than 100 people.

In one operation in Italy, the police conducted raids on 150 companies in eight regions as part of an investigation into huge volumes of suspected fraudulent transactions on the Italian Power Exchange.

EuroPol reported that raids also occurred in Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Latvia, the Netherlands, Slovak Republic and Portugal.

After these actions, trading volumes in Europe dropped by 90 per cent.

It appears that 90 per cent of trades in the European Union emissions trading system were fraudulent, resulting in a loss to European taxpayers of more than $6.6 billion.

Prime Minister Gillard is proposing in her carbon tax policy that an estimated $57 billion of Australian taxpayer funds will be sent offshore to buy “carbon offsets” to enable this country to reach Labor’s new target of an 80 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050.

The logic of her proposal is that Australians should pay people overseas tens of billions of dollars for the right to burn our own coal and to meet her commitment that the coal industry has a “bright future”.

This is apparently to be achieved through a non-existent (at this stage) international trading system.

Absolute madness.

Do you think we might be witnessing the beginning of the end of the USA’s interest in the Middle East? It could be that the sheer cost of the ME wars could force the USA back into a pre WW2 state of isolationism. China & maybe India will not be slow to step into any vacuum.

If the USA steps back from being the world’s policeman how to you see this impacting on global security?

A fleeing Taliban, desperate for water, was plodding through
the Afghan desert when he saw something far off in the distance.

Hoping to find water, he hurried toward the oasis, only to find a
little old Jewish man at a small stand, selling ties..

The Taliban asked, “Do you have water?”

The Jewish man replied, “I have no water.
Would you like to buy a tie?
They are only £5.”

The Taliban shouted,

“Idiot! I do not need an over-priced tie. I need water!
I should kill you, but I must find water first!

“OK,” said the old Jewish man, “It does not matter
that you do not want to buy a tie and that you hate me.
I will show you that I am bigger than that.

If you continue over that hill to the east for about two miles,
you will find a lovely restaurant.
It has all the ice cold water you need.

Shalom.”

Cursing, the Taliban staggered away over the hill.

Several hours later he staggered back, almost dead & said

“Your bloody brother won’t let me in without a tie!”

An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay
of execution.
His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was
feeling worn out and depressed.

As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him
about, ‘What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you
been?
Dinner is cold and I’m not reheating it’. And on and on and on.

Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he
poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the
bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged
himself up the stairs.

While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told
that her husband’s client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of
execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight.

Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to
go up stairs and give him the good news.

As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her
husband, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet.

‘They’re not hanging Wright tonight,’ she said.

He whirled around and screamed, ‘FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WOMAN, DON’T YOU
EVER STOP?!’

In the July 22nd edition of The Australian a specialist has reported that tidal records have shown sea levels in NZ and Aussie were in a “consistent trend of weak deceleration” between 1940 to 2000. The assumption was levels would be accelerating, appears this is not so. Why are we paying ??????. Where’s the PM’s science adviser, has the heat swelled his tongue or his head stuck up his arse like the rest of the rip off merchants.

Oh this is priceless. Greenpeace rips into McKinsey about a lack of transparency in the production a single graph – so much so that they write a whole report to counter it.

Their objections? Lack of transparency of process and data, possible external influences etc etc. Basically, all the things they vigorously defended when Mann et al mannufactured the hockey stick.

Hypocrisy from an enviro-politico activist organization? Well, yes. Of course.

As with fantasy solutions to imaginary problems, the McKinsey’s curve recommendations have real-world consequences. But governments are buying it, and Greenpeace’s become angry.

The world of the carbon-reduction policy market, is crowded, with its numerous specialists, strategies, wedges, masterplans, cap-and-trades, carbon taxes, feed-in-tariffs, and ecosystem payment schemes. Yet, Greenpeace was so upset that it released a whole special report – just to address this one graph from McKinsey.

Interesting links. The USA obviously sees itself & China as the world leaders of the future. The expose on the likely circumstances behind Mubarak’s departure ring true. Less prophetic was intervention in the operation of the Suez Canal although that may be yet to come. The articles answered questions I have pondered over re the power set up in the Middle East.

The possible breaking up of many of the present Islamic countries makes a lot of sense from an Anglo/American point of view & may be relatively easy to accomplish given the largely tribal as opposed to nationalistic makeup of their societies.

Overall I have to concede that I know less of the situation than I did at 6pm.

It’s a shame neither of us apparently have a direct line into Echelon isn’t it. Why the hell not. After all we pay for the damn thing.

I think I’ll start a perception management campaign with Hone and Nicky as my allies, I rather think they’ll think it’s a really terrific idea.
