Since ACT’s recent couple of policy releases they have gone to ground & have constantly refused requests for interviews. Fortunately we were able to bribe one of the cleaners at the Brian Edwards Home for the Old & Perpetually Bewildered where the latest monthly meeting was held. The following notes have been taken from a tape recorder hidden in a bed pan in the day room.

An apology was received from John Banks who had a prior meeting with National Party strategist Murray McCully. Dementia had taken its toll & no one could find the minutes of the previous meeting held in June. Most couldn’t remember the meeting either but all agreed that it must have happened & voted to approve them anyway.

It was considered that a major publicity campaign was necessary. Polling had indicated that the electorate was not impressed with revelations about Bob Clarkson’s left testicle despite the media training it had received so it was decided to run with Plan B. To this effect Dr Brash had made a list of previous affairs & love children & these would be leaked gradually during the lead up to the election. As a bonus the manufacturers of Viagra had promised a substantial donation to party funds.

Medical tests were to be undergone to pick members least affected by incontinence to act as media spokespeople.

Still to be finalised were a set of principles. A suggestion from the floor to approach NZ First & seek to borrow or purchase their unused 2005 manifesto was passed.

At this point the nurses wheeled in the meds trolley & the meeting was adjourned for another month.

Since the Noregian tragedy much has been said about right wing violence. There can be quite a bit of violent and abusive language on this blog – but violence in New Zealand politics and New Zealand society is not just a right wing problem.

Our political and social revile – we should do something about it.

The currency is now at levels where the Reserve Bank has in the past intervened and sold kiwi dollars to drag down its value.

The reserve bank are dreaming if they believe they can do anything. In saying that, the last time the RB intervened I believe they made a lot of cash. Perhaps this is a good reason to intervene 🙂

Extreme blogs and extreme comments on blogs are far more prevalent in right wing forums, there’s no doubt about that. This includes proposals of violence, some of it extreme violence, and also abusive and intimidating language. When it occurs it should be confronted and questioned – this is not trying to shut down free speech as some people claim, those who confront violence speech have as much right to speak as the abusers.

If you were a betting man, you might expect to see a bounce in the $USD after a last minute deal to avoid avoid a US debt default. So maybe the the RB should sell the Kiwi and buy the Greenback. Could make a killing.

Right of way is Way of Right

Why on earth are people staring myopically at the NZ dollar and beleiving it’s strong. It’s other currencies weakening. The US Debt Crisis, the Euro being hamstrung by Greece and Portugal, it’s all relative. It may well be that the dollar is finding it’s correct level, and any attempt to artifically manage this may only be damaging in the long run!

Ok Sonny, I’ll qualify – in my experience on right and left blogs in New Zealand the level of violence and abuse, and the acceptance of it, is more prevalent on right wing forums.

The left weasel their way out of responsibility for many thinmgs, the right shouldn’t weasel their way out of responsibility for violent communication.

It’s been my experience that violence and abuse on political blogs is more likely to be seen on right wing blogs, because left wing blogs are more likely to moderate it out of existence and pretend it never happened.

Pete your expereinces are not evidence of anything but your experiences and perceptions. Why not undertake some form of systematic review then pitch your thesis.

You first issue is sorting out the political polarity of WHO is using such language, not just the polotics of the site they’re doing it.

Murray, too much attention is given to supposed political polarity, and too little attention is given to what is reasonable and productive behaviour and what is destructive. I think that stoking polarity is one of the worst aspects of our politics.

It is my experience that the most mature discussion more serious consideration is given to differing views on right wing blogs in NZ.

What is destructive is characterising adherents of a centuries old philosophical persuasion with more evidence of success than any other as crazy, evil, and stupid and their audience as unstable.

But I think this polite political discourse you are describing already exists in the Tea Party in the US which is run by mainly women with no previous political involvement.

The Karori housewife backs the Greens thinking she is saving frogs & fluffy kiwi chicks…the Greens take her vote & pretend it was for a trip back in time to a socialist dictatorship.

Current example – National are launching a Green Paper on children today to seek public input into how to address the major problems we have with vulnerable children, child abuse etc.

Metria Turei launches and says the way to fix everything is to give all poor people more money.

The green planet must be beyond the red planet.

NO PRESSURE… Now that Labour are so low in the poles under Phil Goffs leadership.. Labour now desperatly need Andrew Little to win the New Plymouth constituent seat.. If they are to gain any credibility that they do have a valid future potential leader that can rebuild labours core values and working class support.. Labour will need to make a deal with NP Independent Rusty Kane not to stand in order to counter balance Act who are not standing a candidate in the NP seat to help Nationals local MP Jonathan Young gain more votes. BUT LABOUR DON”T DO DEALS..

The speculation at the time had the left bombing the left, which considering the militancy of the unions at the time, sounds plausible.
As for alleged threats of violence on right wing blogs, there hasn’t been any.Sometimes the language can be graphic, but relatively the rhetoric is harmless.

Wow! Given that the person(s) responsible have never been found, perhaps you should approach the Police and pass on your theories. If you can eliminate sections of society in the manner above, then perhaps you can tell them who was responsible for killing Ernie Abbott because at this point in time, the killer remains free….

As I recall, the Police speculated that the Trades Hall bomber was a middle-aged man (I think there were some witness reports) with a grudge against unions, but as they never identified a suspect then the motive must remain unknown.

Oh, bollocks. According to the NZPA at the time: “The light green suitcase had a small Rica banana label on it. The suitcase – booby-trapped to go off when moved – contained the equivalent of at least 1kg of gelignite. However, the actual explosive involved was never identified.”

No farmer mentioned. No gelignite identified. Just theories. No facts.

I was under the impression that it was a disgruntled unionist who was upset with what the supposedly ‘left-wing’ Labour party was undertaking in government? I used to live across the road from that building, I could pop round and ask the current tennants who did it? I think there’s a design/seamstress studio and an office stamps shop there!

A man stuck a butter knife into his belly in a failed bid at self-surgery to remove a painful hernia, California police said.

The wife of the 63-year-old Glendale man called paramedics on Sunday night and told the emergency operator her husband was using a knife to remove a protruding hernia, Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

“She said he had impaled himself with a knife,” Lorenz said.

Officers found the man naked on a patio lounge chair outside his apartment with a 15-centimetre butter knife sticking out of his stomach.

The man’s wife told officers that her husband was upset about the hernia and wanted to take it out.

While waiting for paramedics, the sergeant said, the man pulled out the knife and stuffed a cigarette he was smoking into the bleeding, open wound…

See when you think California is ten years in advance of the rest of the world, you wonder about the future, sometimes.

Crikey joanna, you do know a lot of interesting things. So then, why would anyone want to do that, at that time, to Pat Kelly? What was going on then?

Not what I said – I pointed out that the Police could not identify the explosive used in the Trades Hall bombing. For you to say it was gelignite, can only be guesswork. Same with the idea that it was a farmer who did it – this isn’t known either. It could have been a disgruntled idiot pissed off with the bus strike the previous day. As for the “it wasn’t a lefty or a hori” – again, unless you know who really did it, then you are merely speculating. Not an unusual habit for a lefty.

But we can agree that it was bloody awful and not even a reward of $50,000 (the biggest reward offered at the time) has tempted someone ‘in the know’ to come forward. As mentioned earlier, the killer is still walking free…

Government policy makers don’t understand family firms.

Christine Woods, a senior lecturer at the University of Auckland’s Business School, said Labour may not have talked to family businesses to gauge what impact its capital gains tax policy could have on such companies.

The head of BDO’s Family Business and Succession Sector Group, Jeff Roberts, said a major issue facing owner-managed businesses was the transition of leadership from one generation to the next.

“Over the next decade we’ll see the biggest ever inter-generational transfer of wealth in our history take place as the baby boomers retire,” he said.
