One of the problems with all of these so-called studies, regardless of the subject, is the fact that they often represent the value judgements of those that crafted them. In academic circles this is known as “the myth of nuetrality”, an idea from postmodernism that rejects the modern Western notion of pure objectivity and value nuetrality.

What judgement are you seeking Griff? What values would predispose one to dismiss climate change evidence? Religious beliefs perhaps? They allude to cultural polarization, so I’d infer that they’re suggesting certain cultures are predisposed to disbelieve climate change evidence.
Of course we then need to define ‘climate change evidence’ and ‘dismissal’ of such. Does acceptance that the climate changes naturally constitute a dismissal of climate change evidence? Is it requisite that you have to believe a) the climate is changing mostly due to human activity and (not or) b) the change is likely to entail catastrophic consequences?

Others value ideology and see the truth in their ideas

The first one science relies on processes outside the mind, the next two are focused inside the mind.

A debate on meta-logic?

Certainly that is how classical logic works, there’s truth and falsity, and nothing in between. It’s useful, because it’s simple. But it’s not the only useful logic. There are many-valued logics out there, the most famous being fuzzy logic, which works well for some problems. Classical logic has proved to be less useful in quantum mechanics, the famous cat is not either alive or dead until the famous box is opened.

The question of relative truth is a different one again. Usually, within the relative context, the logic is binary. But a lot of truths require a frame of reference. For instance “how fast am I going?” is a question whose answer can only ever have relative truth. Relative to the Earth, I’m stationary at my desk. Relative to the sun, I’m moving around quite rapidly in a large near-ellipse. Relative to the galactic centre, I’m corkscrewing around even faster, slowly circumnavigating the center. Relative to other galaxies, I’m hurtling away at a colossal speed, apparently faster, the further a galaxy you choose.

The Schrodinger’s cat thought experiment is dependent on classical logic to illustrate the argument. The flaw in the experiment from a deterministic point of view, is that there is *never* going to be an exactly 50/50 chance of an event either happening, or not happening, so the cat cannot be both alive and dead in reality. Only works in theory.

Lee01:Laughable. “Studies” like that just beggar questions. For example their use of IQ. It is well known now that IQ’s are not fixed, they change over time and are highly variable, even being effected by the seasons. Most people’s IQ’s are higher in summer, lower in winter. There is some evidence that they even change throughout the day, depending on social and environmental factors. So straight off the bat the so-called “study” has a serious problem with its assumptions. More research would probably disclose even more.

Evidence for any of this please. IQ’s are fairly stable within testing error.

And just to burst the bubble further, here is a list of some “fundamentalists” who could reasonably be said to amongst the brightest people of our civilisation:

Irenaus, Augustine, Aquinas, Martin Luther, John Calvin, C.S Lewis, Francis Schaeffer, Timothy Keller, Michael Horton, Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and so on.

Nah, he’s right. Plenty of bright folk in your list, but CS Lewis’s attempts at apologetics are like a primer in logical fallacy. He’s very convincing to the convinced.

‘Bond bank’ aimed at Mum and Dad

Local Government Minister Rodney Hide.

Long-suffering “mum and dad” retail investors will have better access to high-quality local government bonds by early next year after legislation passed yesterday setting up a “bond bank” which will borrow money on behalf of local authorities.

The Local Government Borrowing Bill passed its third reading yesterday supported by all parties in Parliament.

The New Zealand Local Government Funding Agency Ltd:
* Will issue bonds to raise cash on behalf of local authorities.
* Borrowing by local authorities is expected to rise from $6 billion currently to $10 billion.
* The bonds will be offered to institutional and retail investors.
* Local Government NZ estimates the funding agency will save local government about $25 million each year.

It certainly does use classical logic, in a reductio ad absurdum argument to show that the idea of something being in a state that only becomes decided at the moment of observation, has absurd consequences. But there is a corollary to this – the problem might actually be in the logic, rather than the quantum mechanics. It is a philosophical position to insist that something must be in one state or it’s complementary, without any other possibilities. This has been useful to human thought, but it is not a scientific stipulation – science has no use for such stipulations, really. Fighting desperately to protect 2 valued logic is not helping science to understand the universe. It could be fighting against understanding it. It’s an extremely deep and ingrained prejudice to insist on binary thinking, to the point that many people can’t even conceive of alternatives. It is, and hopefully always will be, a purpose of science to examine these prejudices, and if they are found wanting, to reject them.

That said, binary logic is extremely powerful. It’s like the Aristotle of decision processes (and it’s not surprise Aristotle wrote the first formal works on logic), enables the building of giant edifices of knowledge. And just like Aristotle, and his powerful arguments that the Earth must be stationary, it could stand in the way of truth for thousands of years.

I’m not sure that the problem with quantum mechanics is due to bivalance. Its fairly well established that the axiom of distributivity, a standard part of classical logic, isn’t true in quantum mechanics.
