The apocryphal story claims that the local lighthouse keeper’s cat dutifully brought him a dead wren each morning, but has been exaggerated.

Regardless, by 1896, the Stephen’s Island Wren was extinct, before it had even had a chance to be named as a species.

Act leader Don Brash is calling for the decriminalisation of cannabis.

He says prohibition of the drug hasn’t worked, and policing it costs millions of tax payer dollars and clogs up the court system.

He’s told TVNZ’s Q&A programme there are other ways to restrict the use of marijuana.

“It’s estimated thousands of New Zealanders use cannabis on a fairly regular basis, 6,000 are prosecuted every year, a $100million of tax payers money is spent to police this law,” says My Brash.

families who have captured large capital gains as land use has intensified and given back to the community in terms of donating to the arts, building walk ways (named after them) and what have you.

Seems them there 7 story buildings aint what they want as not so profitable. 🙁

Writer says the property owners are mostly investors not developers and it will take big international investors with the long term view to do the rebuild.

Police say a decision on whether to lay criminal charges in relation to the deaths of 29 men at the Pike River coal mine will not be made until the Royal Commission of Inquiry has wrapped up its investigation.

NO, the decision will hang on what the commission has to say about the general fuck up of operations made by the police.

If they get castigated as they should then they will run away and hide..

Gees i’m getting sick of listening to the PR of these wallahs.

For all the waffle printed espousing the opinions of various interest groups determined to rebuild Christchurch their way I am still waiting to see an expose on what is likely to attract tenants back to the inner city.

By the time anything is actually built any businesses displaced by the earthquake will have either adapted to working from the suburbs or will have gone under. Add to the equation the effects broadband is having on bricks & mortar based retailers & office orientated workers & it becomes sensible to ask who the tenants of the new buildings will be.

Whether the new buildings are 7 stories or 17 is irrelevant if they are destined to remain empty.

Would certainly assist with the unemployed in Northland. We could export ship loads of the stuff. To where I’m not sure but there’s plenty of demand for quality horticultural product all round the world. We would just have to rename it just like we did kiwifruit.
Ah now there’s and idea. China is our second biggest market, maybe we could make it our biggest if we called the dope something like Kiwicalm, relaxing agent, aphrodisiac, grown in a Green country using the latest horticultural systems, Spray free.
Can’t lose.
Hmmm, well has lots of possibilities in including test labs, unfortunately would need a bloody bureaucracy around it though.

Deficit gone. All good.

And best of all will be supported by the Greens.
Might get a Green Act govt. Now that could be fun.

Few people who know me in person would suggest that I’ve enjoyed a sheltered life. I therefore reckon that I’ve seen enough instances of people who are regular & even hard users of both alcohol & ‘the weed’. From a layman’s point of view the grog causes far more misery both to its users & the people associated with them.

I have never seen anyone get violent or abusive as the result of consuming dope….silly, incoherent, useless, yes but certainly not dangerous to anyone else unless they attempt to drive or do something requiring concentration &/or dexterity. Get someone on the turps & they can be anything between unpredictably violent & incontinent.

Point is that generally dope, if it harms anyone, it is only the user…..wish we could say the same for the plonkers who pontificate on the demon weed whilst gargling a single malt.

That gap around Nonu and Smith has been regularly exploited by opposition teams and particularly the Aussies. In the first Bledisloe Cup match this year it was only two outstanding covering tackles by Carter that stopped tries early in the game. My preference is to have SBW and Kahui there.

BTW does anyone else think Corey Jane will get a trip to the judiciary for taking the guy in the air early in the game? It would have been a yellow card in Super Rugby.

I’ve already accepted that people under the influence of dope are incapable of operating vehicles or machinery…it’s very similar to what is already known about cough medicines & alcohol.

I don’t think anyone on today’s forums has suggested that the effects of cannabis consumption are totally benign or even greatly desirable. We have just pointed out that it is the social intoxicant of choice for many people & that it should not be less available than wine, spirits or beer.

In other words, free choice.

I agree, as well as with your remark about Carter’s superb cover defense. Carter, to me looks the sharpest he has looked in 5 years, but I think he has bulked up a little too much at the expense of some of the uncanny agility he had as a young player.

Kahui looks great, but I’d rather leave him on the wing, with Nonu and Williams switching in the centers to break up opposition defense patterns.

Decriminalising doesn’t mean permitting those things any more than it is permitted to drink alcohol and do any of those things. Most industries which use dangerous stuff all do drug testing these days, for this very reason. No-one is suggesting that is going to change, in any way.

Agreed re Carter in all aspects. McCaw is another who has bulked up too much.

Kahui is a far more secure defender than Nonu and less likely to give away stupid penalties or turn over the ball so he would be my first choice there. It is great to see him 100% injury free.

Gotta tell ya that i was using a seat belt before they became law. Reason I had the fun of owning and driving an Austin Van which had two front sliding doors.
We could drive along doors wide open and enjoy ourselves. But you control freaks would never ever do anything like that. It would give the OSH outriders an apoplexy and you might enjoy yourself as well.

Lots of delivery vans had them but now they all have opening doors to kill cyclists. Do you cycle? Let us know so we can knock yus orf.

iMP can refer to the Herald, I think it was yesterday, or GD and read all about the results of workplace testing for dope. Doesn’t fix the booze though.

Just wander along to any concert including the mission and see what Kiwi’s think of the use of dope. Even your mother uses it.

Personally never had the need for weed but that’s my choice.
I don’t get boozed either, again my choice.
Never smoked, again my choice.

The day I left the left…

At the time—I was 28—my political ideas were little more than the accumulated, half-digested buzzing meme-hive of left-leaning pop culture and far-left academic indoctrination. From all the Norman Lear sitcoms of my youth up to all my avowedly communist professors in journalism school, the good guys and bad guys had been clearly delineated for me. I had been encouraged to “question authority,” but never the authority of major media or academic consensus. I perceived them to be objective scientists rather than evangelical ideologues.

Liberal Psych 101 subverted the dominant paradigm until nothing made sense. It taught that cockroaches are equivalent to butterflies. It preached that success was a sign of evil and that failure was an emblem of virtue. It saw something noble in losing rather than winning. It didn’t seem so keen about “leveling the playing field” as it was on perverting natural law until they forced the game to end in a sudden-death two-overtimes tie. It published endless treatises on deconstruction without making a peep about how to reconstruct everything after destroying it.

Then as now, the left preached a Gospel of innate cognitive and physical equality among all social groups. What it did not preach was an equality of character. White people generally, and rich white males in particular, were depicted as morally defective, probably by birth.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it.

By all accounts, the experiments are replicable.

We’re not talking about a couple of unknown scientists in Lithuania here. This is CERN, though unconnected with the LHC.

The history of science shows us that one paradigm is inevitably superseded by the next. That is why this could be a once in a lifetime event, in which the rules as we know them must be rewritten, just as relativity explained the mercury anomaly that Newtonian physics failed to explain.

I don’t disagree with them because I think they’re idiots who don’t know what they’re doing, or because I disagree with the possibility that Physics as we know it might be false. In fact I personally think that Physics as we know it contains large parts that will be overturned eventually.

The reason I suspect the results are false are due to cynicism borne from experience. I have over the decades seen a large of number of claims of sensational results – cold fusion, The Fifth Force, Podkletnov’s antigravity stuff, and numerous others that never made it into the newspapers. They inevitably turn out to be false. A lot of the experiments contain details that never make it into the newspaper reports where things could be going wrong and it usually turns out they are indeed going wrong at these points. Even today we have sensational claims being made – that radioactive dacay rates aren’t constant – that will, probably, turn out to be due to some problem with the way the experiments were conducted rather than a real result. This year alone we have had two groups claim that they have detected Dark Matter particles even though other groups conducting similar searches haven’t seen a signal. Its possible that the two groups are right and the rest are wrong and that a major discovery has been made but most likely it will turn out that some subtle mistake has been by the two groups.

In the case of the superluminal neutrino claims in the past few days there is always a possibility that it will turn out to be genuine discovery but most likely it won’t. The discovery appears, at least on the face of it, to be in conflict with other data and the claim is dependent on some assumptions about the neutrino production process that may be false.

Tens of millions of people died in World Wars, so that New Zealand could have a Bill of Rights Act.

Are those World Wars so long ago? Remember those World War losses were as important to the people at the time as Pike River losses are to Pike River families today — except there were tens of millions of then, not a couple of dozen.

You wouldn’t dream of insulting Pike River families as you are currently insulting the loss of my Dad in WWII. It is not that long ago, is it?

Please don’t breach our Bill of Rights Act.

Retrospective legislation is a breach of the Bill of Rights Act.

Retrospective legislation is an insult to tens of millions of people prepared to die so we could have a Bill of Rights Act.

I don’t happen to like criminals getting away with crime. But which is worse? Crime by the State or Crime by a few gunslingers or drug dealers.

Please respect my father’s memory and tens of millions besides him who meant that we speak English, not German, and that we have the beautiful thing with all its warts, called an NZ Bill of Rights Act.

I personally know what it is like to have my Bill of Rights breached.

It is described by some judicial scholars as the worst thing you can do to a person in peacetime — prosecute someone unlawfully for a crime. I know. If I had my time over, I would rather you shot me at the beginning, than the might of the State prosecute me unlawfully, and contrarily to my rights. I wish you had simply shot me first, rather than put me through what you put me through.

Don’t sign up to the bad legislation, please.

On sober reflection, I’m inclined to agree. Better to wait for the experiments to be peer reviewed and replicated at Caltech.

I find this aspect of cosmology interesting. The WIMP idea, ie that dark matter is composed of baryonic matter particles less reactive than neutrinos is a compelling theory to determinists like me.

I have a theory as to what dark *energy* is composed of (which I suspect is too simple not to have been thought of and already discarded):

Assuming that galaxies have been radiating light and matter particles out into the universe for the past thirteen and a half billion years, wouldn’t the accumulation of all this energy result in a counter force to gravity? Might explain some of the accelerating expansion…..

You may be right, and Viking2’s post may be a little hyperbolic.

But never forget, each ANZAC Day we are told about the sacrifices made so we could be free.

When we question to enormous cost in $ and lives of THE WAR ON TERROR we are told we must fight “them” for they hate “our” freedoms.

So just maybe, there is more than a nugget of truth in the post.

Retrospective law is an evil.

Law made in haste is always bad law.

It is impossible to defend our freedoms if we willingly give them up.

In a sense yes that would be correct but they went to fight in both wars for fundamental freedoms of people in other countries. Especially you should note the Jewish community of which you are a member. .
I happen to be old enough to have spent many weekends with my Dad and his mates who did just that and I have not a shred of doubt that this is exactly what their reaction would be to sloppy, disgraceful lazy politicians who legislate their way out of a problem of their own making.
National if they do this are no better than Labour doing the same thing be enacting legislation to legalize their theft of taxpayers money.

This is a 17 year old issue AND THERE ARE REMEDIES OTHER THAN ENACTING JUSTICE BY LAW.

The third would has very little chance of attaining the level of consumption that we now enjoy. There is just not enough resources available for the third world to live like the USA. Population growth must halt and soon if we are to reach a stable future To think that we can continue to reproduce as we do with no end is insane. the first world has reined in population growth as a result of changes in culture How do we export this Culture to those who are increasing at such large rates or is it tied in with consumption?

There are no “natural resources.”

What, do you suppose that the 14th century, for example, was awash with “natural resources” which have since been depleted?

They had nothing. They were scratching an existence whereas we live like kings.

It is human ingenuity which makes shale gas a resource. By itself it is nothing.

Unrefined oil is just a pollutant.

The Internet wasn’t just some bits of vine lying around you know.

People are the ultimate resource.

Shale gas comes ultimately from the sun as does coal, oil and natural gas. Regardless of human ingenuity it is fossil fuel that has allowed our standard of living and the world population to rise. Energy sources are requiring more and more energy to extract and are producing more and more greenhouse gases. What will replace fossil fuels? Name the next big energy source.

I agree with this. Although I’m less convinced about AGW, the general philosphical approach is correct. He is also spot on in seeing the problem within classical economics, of both the left and the right. Keynesianism was a failed experiment in inflationary spending/command and control economics, and neoliberalism is a failed experiment in corporate/banking greed and amoral “freedom”.

We need a new economics to challenge the orthodoxy of both Right and Left, a fusion of agrarianism, a system based around sustainable farming practices and small family owned farms, and distributism, a system based around the widespead ownership of private property and small family owned businesses, both operating in a moral, family centered economy.

“I think their days are over, they need to dissolve, and it’s just becoming a bit of an embarrassment now,” he says.

“I don’t think there’s a way forward for them out of this.”

I still think Act are good for a few percennt.
