The government is to forge ahead with a ban on branded cigarette packets.
Cabinet has agreed ”in principle” to introduce a plain packaging regime alongside Australia – but only after public consultation.
Associate Minister of Health Tariana Turia announced the move this evening, calling it ”a significant to our goal of making New Zealand smokefree by 2025.”

Big Tobacco is getting even bigger in Lower Hutt as Imperial Tobacco’s Petone factory gears up to send 4 billion cigarettes a year to Australia.

The long-established factory in Richmond St will be quadrupling its exports across the ditch and introducing 50 new jobs, with a two-year, $45-million upgrade nearing completion.

One of Taranaki’s largest private investment projects has gone horribly wrong, losing close to $20 million in a series of high-risk financial ventures.
The loss means Taranaki’s most northern iwi, Ngati Tama, has shed all of a $14.5m Treaty of Waitangi payout it received in 2003.

Yesterday Ngati Tama kaumatua Wiremu Matuku opened the iwi’s books in front of the Taranaki Daily News in what they said would be the only time they would speak to the news media over the issue.
“And unfortunately for Ngati Tama’s estimated 5000 members, what they read in your newspaper will be the first time they will hear of this terrible news,” said an emotional Mr Matuku, 76, of New Plymouth.
“Our tribe is devastated, not only by the news, but also by the realisation that once it becomes public Ngati Tama will be battered by speculation over why various investments went so bad. We are going to have to carry a heavy burden of shame and accusation.”

One supposes the white guilt for historic infringements and that any post colonial stress syndrome caused by the Queen were absolved by the Treaty payout, but what is the psychological consequences now of the iwi loosing this money itself. Who will “carry a heavy burden of shame and accusation” and how will the new dispossession be compensated for – will it just dissolve [“what they said would be the only time they would speak to the news media over the issue”] and if so, where does that place the collective white guilt in the first place.

Yvette… When one of the other iwi lost a heap of their settlement we were told about ‘fidiciary duty’. This means that if iwi blow their payout it is the fault of the colonial oppressor and further payments could be required. Doesn’t that sound fair and reasonable to you.

Has Hillside been deliberately run down so it can be sold to a selected overseas buyer (we are being softened up for this already) who has had their eye on it for a while and wants to buy it cheaply and exploit the workforce?

It’s either “them” or Simon Lusk.

I am forming a new Political Party.
It’s to be called the “ANTALL Party”
Its objectives are based on being Anti anything in New Zealand.
Initially ANTI John Key – bacause he is a successful Prime Minister.
ANTI Fracking, and associated procreation words
ANTI a National Convention centre because it will cost taxpayers no money. There are no queues for using the pokies.
ANTI core Public “Servants” because we do not have servants in New Zealand – so get rid of all servants.
ANTI further Maori settlements after 2014, so that the Waitangi Tribunal can be wound up.
ANTI Trade Unions as they only represent the employment of the Union executives, to the detriment of the paying members.
ANTI anything All Black because black is a funeral colour, and New Zealand is pro funeral anything.
This can be expanded ad nauseum.
The basis tenet of the party is to be New Zealand ANTI everything.

According to the Herald Sun, the AFL in Australia plans to install prayer rooms at all grounds because Muslims have to pray 5 times a day so can’t attend matches.

EX-HAWTHORN president and former premier Jeff Kennett has lashed out at the AFL for ruling that all grounds must install prayer rooms.
It comes after Richmond’s Bachar Houli said the requirement for Muslims to pray five times a day was stopping many from attending AFL games.

Houli said many were forced to pray in carparks or stairwells at AFL grounds.

But Mr Kennett labelled the AFL’s mandate “ridiculous”.

“To put prayer rooms into sporting venues is not part of the Australian lexicon. I think it is an over-reaction,” he said on 3AW .

“It’s not practical, it’s stupid, it’s political correctness gone mad.”

He said the move would also ruin the culture of football and create unnecessary change.

“In the old days when you went to a football ground there were very few stands, there was mud on the ground that was real football,” he said.

Houli, a devout Muslim who works for the AFL one day a week as a multicultural ambassador, asked league chief Andrew Demetriou to provide prayer rooms at all grounds.

Prayer rooms, for all denominations, have been recently introduced at Etihad Stadium, the MCG and Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.

But the AFL is now insisting on prayer rooms at the SCG and all other interstate venues. Houli said not many fans knew of the existing prayer rooms and Mr Demetriou said prayer rooms were long overdue.

“It was a request from Bachar in his role as a multicultural ambassador and, to be honest, I was genuinely surprised it wasn’t thought of before,” Mr Demetriou said.

And there are those who say Sharia is not creeping down our way….

Here’s an example of what 911 awareness brings to the party in terms of current geopolitical analysis. Nothing to do with 911, but an understanding that just because an issue like Fukushima is not being reported in the MSM does not mean it’s gone away and also, while this article doesn’t cover it at all, an awareness of who might have engineered this and why they might have done it. All of which have nothing whatsoever to do with 911 itself, other than the common denominator of who might have engineered it. But to those who don’t get it, it’s all just imagination, including probably those empty Chinese cities. They’re probably just imaginary as well, to those who don’t get it.

Anders Breivik ‘trained’ by playing Tour Of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Anders Behring Breivik has described how he “trained” for the attacks he carried out in Norway last summer using the computer game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The 33-year-old said he practised his shot using a “holographic aiming device” on the war simulation game, which he said is used by armies around the world for training.

“You develop target acquisition,” he said. He used a similar device during the shooting attacks that left 69 dead at a political youth camp on the island of Utøya on 22 July.

Describing the game, he said: “It consists of many hundreds of different tasks and some of these tasks can be compared with an attack, for real. That’s why it’s used by many armies throughout the world. It’s very good for acquiring experience related to sights systems.”

He added: “If you are familiar with a holographic sight, it’s built up in such a way that you could have given it to your grandmother and she would have been a super marksman. It’s designed to be used by anyone. In reality it requires very little training to use it in an optimal way. But of course it does help if you’ve practised using a simulator.”

Japan is largely “going it alone” trying to cobble together a plan to safely store the spent fuel and minimize the risks to public safety…”

Starbucks not going to use dye from crushed bugs in their products any more *yuck*

Your Strawberries & Creme frappuchino will no longer feature a splash of bug – enough customers didn’t want to slurp crushed cochineal insects that Starbucks Corp. is ditching the red dye used in their making.
The Mexican and South American tropical creepy-crawlies were dried and then processed into a coloring product that gave some Starbucks goods – including strawberry banana smoothies, raspberry swirl cakes, birthday cake pops, mini doughnuts with pink icing and red velvet whoopee pie – their rosy hue.

But it wasn’t vegan. It wasn’t kosher. It was also just kind of gross, according to the thousands of Starbucks customers who decided they weren’t adventurous enough to stomach the ingredient. (Maybe the color is part of it – consumer outcry also caused several retailers to recently strip meat products known as pink slime from their shelves.)

By the end of June, cochineal insect dye will be no more at Starbucks. The Seattle company will replace it with a tomato extract called lycopene.

“As our customers you expect and deserve better – and we promise to do better,” wrote Starbucks’ U.S. President Cliff Burrows in a blog post Thursday.

For international, our media just follow AP/Reuters leads nasska. Without question or further investigation. They don’t even do their job, what they’re paid to do. Pathetic isn’t it.

That article says that Japan media is more open about it than the US who aren’t being told a thing. I can believe that from the US but wonder if the Japanese are still getting the full picture.

If the spent fuel pool from #4 collapses as a result of another tremor, that’s a mega disaster. What would be good is if the US offered its help in clearing that up since it’s a specialist job, they need to remain encased in water throughout and I would bet the US Army Engineers would be able to do something useful there. But then you have the politics of it.

From what I understand, next to Japan itself, the USA has most to lose if the Fukushima plant goes out of control. Prevailing winds will take the radiation out to sea & across the Pacific.

Americans are generally totally ignorant of & disinterested in anything that happens outside their national borders but you would think that some of the brighter people in the path of a potential disaster might be having a wake up call.

Campbell asked all the questions we have seen in the papers and on the blogs about the Crafar Farms and the Casino deal. John Key answered them confidently and honestly and had Campbell on the backfoot several times especially about the casino deal. But to be fair, Campbell asked the questions everybody has been asking over the last few days.
Key also challenged Shearer to come on Campbell Live to, if he thought casinos were so bad as he has stated several times, announce he would close all casinos in New Zealand.

I dislike lawyers in general David. I am aware of your previous profession. 🙂

I particularly dislike lawyers who have carved a huge income for themselves from the public purse.

WFWL I like to call it. Working For Welfare for Lawyers.

They are no better than up market dole bludgers and dishonest DPB beneficaries.

Fellows like Lord Birkenhead are leading the charge against the public defender system.

Sooner they get dealt to the better. We have far to many greedy little lawyers in NZ.

More Scientists and Engineers would be a goal JK and team should be working towards.

He spoke about the comparative number of pokies now compared to earlier (less), also about the number of jobs created, in construction and later. A good positive message with an aside about Michael Fay’s earlier position on selling assets off shore. A bit refreshing from all the doom and gloom actually. At least to me he got the arguments moving away from the mantras we’ve heard for a long time. I got the impression that having returned from overseas selling the message of investment here and free trade etc he was upbeat, informed, and invigorated.

Its just the cost of providing that defence and the profusion of Beamers among the so called profession that is the sticking point David.

Somehow I just can’t get past the fixation I have that the progress of the country would be better served by Scientists, Engineers and GOOD teachers on say $300/hour and ambulance chasers on say $14/hour. 🙂
