Gidday Griff,

i know your Dad was selling early computers at one stage in his career.
Just FYI
In the very early 70s i was on my OE and got my start selling adding machines and typewriters
in London for British Olivetti.
My territory was EC3 and the selling point for the adding machines was that our machines had a paper print out and
therefore one could check their input if things did not balance. ( i sold a poultice of them)
Sorry to hear about your Mum.
Course i would never have made that crack if i had known.

The reality maggie, is that you choose to interpret the quite justified criticism of you for shamelessly using him as a meal ticket and an excuse to sit on your lazy arse and bludge off the taxpaying community, including the solo parents who do make the effort to work, as an attack on him.

It isn’t actually the boy’s fault that even at age 16, his father pursues his lifetime exercise in futility and pointlessness on the pretext that he needs to be at home when his adolescent son arrives home from school. On the contrary, your feeble justification for remaining on the bludge is an implicit declaration that you don’t actually trust him to be home alone. You’re the one who is insulting the boy. But we are all still waiting to find out how you can be in the library using the internet and home to welcome him all at the same time.

Put simply “looking for zebras” is looking for the unusual in the usual (generally in order to try to substantiate a belief you would like proven.)

One example, in medicine of all things, is that the hoofbeats you hear coming towards you are horses, not zebras – in other words, it is the obvious, not the unusual.

It does to me as well Griff but having been here for around 5 years I’ve realised the importance of having a city capable of doing proper hair, which I think is rather underestimated by Akld and others, until the capacity disappears and you all start to look really bad.

I mean just think about it if no-one had good looking hair: no more school dances or even dates, a major line in cosmetics simply disappeared, probably everyone would fail their next job interview, lots of car accidents due to vision issues, etc etc etc.

So yes on balance we are worth it, after all, aren’t we. (yay!)

Wow, now this is interesting.

A writer has gone into the background of Obama and his ‘father’, and reckons that Barrack Obama (the POTUS) may actually be the son of Frank Marshall Davis, political activist and Communist.

The two look very much alike.
Seven nude photos of BO’s mother Ann Dunham were discovered at Davis’ house. Apparently, he liked taking pictures of nude women.

“I decided to investigate Frank Marshall Davis. His close physical resemblance to Obama was shocking, while Obama little resembled the Kenyan Obama,” Gilbert said. “How could this be?”

Gilbert launched into what became two years of research during which he conducted interviews and discovered rare film footage and photos.

“I unearthed two film archives of Frank Marshall Davis, one from 1973, the other from 1987, as well as Davis’ photo collection,” he explained. “I then acquired 500 copies of the Honolulu Record, the communist-run newspaper where Davis wrote a weekly political column for eight years.”

Gilbert’s research turned shocking when he obtained seven indecent photos of Ann Dunham, Obama’s mother, at Frank Marshall Davis’ house, suggesting an intimate connection between Dunham and Davis.

“I was not happy to include these racy photos in the film but found it necessary to substantiate the intimate relationship between the two,” he said. “Those photos ended up in a men’s mail-order catalog of nude women, likely sold to them by Davis. I placed black bars on parts of the photos to be respectful.”

To establish the foundation for the photos, Gilbert documented that Davis was one of the founders of a photography club in Chicago, known as the “Lens Camera Club,” and that he specialized in nude photographs.

Later in life, Davis also penned a scurrilous, autobiographical sex novel, titled “Sex Rebel: Black,” in which he detailed an illicit sexual relationship with an underage woman named “Anne.” Gilbert believes the name was a thin disguise for Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham.

Gilbert reconstructs Obama’s autobiography, “Dreams from My Father,” and concludes that the tale of the goat-herding father from Kenya is a cover story, concocted to mask an inconvenient pregnancy.

The truth, Gilbert argues, is that Barack Obama II was born from the illicit sexual relationship that rebellious teenager Ann Dunham began with Davis after her parents forced her to move to Hawaii.

Labour has lodged a complaint over what it says is a false declaration made my then Auckland mayoral candidate John Banks.

Shadow Leader of the House Trevor Mallard said Mayor Len Brown had declared a donation of $15,000 from Sky City among his total campaign donations.

The casino said it donated the same amount to Mr Banks.

But Mr Mallard says it is not in his electoral return.

” Transparency around election donations is a major protection against corruption in the New Zealand political system,” he said.

And so, Labour has lodged a complaint with Auckland Council’s electoral officer Bruce Thomas.

” I would hope that he now refers the matter to police for further investigation.

But there are also facts: such as the seven nude, racy photos of Ann Dunham (Obama’s mother) in Davis’ possession, and likely taken by him and sold for “men’s catalogues”. (See some of them in the youtube video linked above). The two likely had a relationship. Is it possible for her to have given birth to Davis’ baby? Of course it is. Is it true? Who knows. But it is certainly a possibility.

Just reading the thread it actually started out pretty good today and then vto got me scared how salmon farms are going to take over the entire ocean … no more sea space @ 10.39…. oh dear.

Actually, PEB, there are some issues with salmon farming. Potentially, farmed salmon could end up consuming the majority of wild fish caught – you catch and grind up quite a few fish to feed a salmon.

It’s amazing where much of the protein used to feed desirable species of fish/animals originates. Stockfood & chook feed
can be made from vegetable sources, fish meal, meat meal or a mixture. Only thing that concerns me is that “mad cow disease” had its origins in artificial food.

There was talk at some stage of reprocessing chicken shit to reuse the wasted protein but I don’t know whether it made the light of day. If we knew exactly what went into some of our food losing weight would be easier.

Fish farms have a far greater impact than just on the area they contain feed large amounts of food to maximize growth plus add in all the fish shit it gets unhealthy for a far larger area.and you can end up with a black toxic ooze bottom
Fish farms have a preference to a degree of shelter this often up sets boaties as they lose anchoring and cruising ground
Poor genetic selection could harm local stock but they are introduced.
As to the number of jobs, seems a lot sounds like marketing to me.

What really gets me is that immediately someone mentions anything in New Zealand that MAY lead to some jobs , may lead to some developement , there is an immediate negativity from 6 self interested persons and the world has to come to an end– cant do this cant do that, – its bloody pathetic.

Mankind put men on the moon 40 years ago, they will be able to over come some fish shit.

And yep nasska you dont want to go down the recycling chickenshit way at all, but there’ll be proteins developed out there that are suitable for feed, thye just wont be economic at the moment but they will be.

Locally we are hoping and hopeful we will have a huge mussel operation off the coast of Opotiki,, they have trialed mussels, sea cucumber and scallops, so even if we had to farm seafood for other sea farminng operations , everything is doable, its just we are such a bunch of self interested whingers, pisses moi off big time

The chance of something going wrong, disease wise, with the fish in such constant ,close confines must be higher than in the wild. There would be some jobs created…..I know a couple of guys who work about six months of each year servicing & harvesting mussel farms in the Sounds.

Reasonably well paid too.

If anything comes up that might grow the NZ economy either the nimbys or the Greens will stuff it. That said, proposals like these have to be well researched to ensure that risks are kept to a minimum……hopefully science stays a few steps ahead.

I dare say that it has been considered & thrown out as not economic but the Chinese farm fish in ponds feeding them naturally with insects. Apparently an hour or two of bright lights over the ponds during the evening attracts sufficient insect life not to require any other feeding.

As any outdoor BBQ will show there’s not a great shortage of mozzies & moths in our night air.

Just seen your angry posts. You clearly did not read what I wrote as your posts refer to issues I did not raise.

I would be interested to hear your answer to the question I put, namely, how will the sea farming industry achieve growth when all the sea space has been taken and how will the dairy industry achieve growth when all the water has been taken.

It is quite a simple question.

Feel free to go off topic and make all sorts of mad assumptions and conspiracies as you have done, but it would good to hear your genuine answer to the simple question. You will need to think for a bit though. I’ll have a look in the morning. Perhaps you should sleep on it.

edit: I would also like to know why you got so angry at such a simple question.

This problem scenario of growth and the unsustainability of unlimited growth has been around for as long as humans have been around.
People fall into the trap time and time again.
Paul R. Ehrlich fell into that trap when he wrote the ‘The Population Bomb’ in 1968.
Certain things are unsustainable if the circumstances don’t change and we keep on doing things the same way we’ve always been doing them without taking into account human ingenuity and the advances of technology.

Amazing that the first post of the day is to phil. He must keep people awake at night. Soon the hordes will descend demanding answers of him and pointing out details of his apparent life of which they don’t approve. Some perfect person even demanded that phil apologise the other day, in which case the perfect person said he would leave him alone. Odd how some people think they own others, or that others owe them something. It’s safe ground when a ‘crew’ can single out an individual, so safe that the crew or mob don’t realise that their ‘courage’ is mass produced only when their target appears to have no defence.

My suggestion is engage with Phil if you like, in the same manner you’d wish to be engaged. Afford him respect and don’t deign to have the right to post about his family, otherwise just walk on by as the song goes – particularly if he annoys you and you feel you just have to say something, get in the last word, like it’s a domestic argument of some sort. It’s all getting a little odd folks.

I obviously can’t answer for ‘Pauleastbay’ but I would hardly put my comment in the ‘angry’ bin. Rather, I would describe it as dealing with the sense of frustration I get when every idea that may improve our woeful unemployment statistics gets ambushed.

You are concerned with 1) a lack of water for more dairy farms & 2) finite room for fish farming. While I agree that neither resource is entirely limitless I reckon we’re quite a way from crisis point in either instance. On a planet of seven billion people innovative ways to produce food, specifically protein in the case of NZ, is vital if we are to avoid war & social unrest caused by hunger that need not exist.

Let’s face it……NZ doesn’t do very much super well except grow food & educate our citizens to a point where they move overseas for greater opportunities. Our would be “green” masters actively oppose every initiative that would grow our economy to a point where we didn’t have to sell our farmland to pay for the junk in $2 shops. Mining, oil, dairying can provide jobs & prosperity. There’s plenty of room to set conditions about how they impact on the environment but all we hear are screams of ban this, ban that & think of Gaia.

I don’t want to see my country strip mined & wrecked by unfettered development but I’ll continue to oppose Luddite policies that would see us return to medieval standards of living.

Well Nostalgia, I don’t run this blog and I’m not going to tell others how to act on it – not my job.

For myself personally, I now realise that attempting to engage with philu is a waste of time. You know how you watch some people and you wait for them to mature, to grow up, to take responsibility, take their place in society, and pass into adulthood? And you know how some of them just never do?

I wouldn’t even say he’s stuck in a perpetual teenage phase, because talking to my daughter’s teenage friends is far more rewarding than talking to philu. I said goodbye a day or so ago – meaning I’m not going to bother even trying to have an intelligent conversation with him any more. It’s a waste of time.

Thanks naaska. I understand all those things. To me however it seems like both the dairy industry and the sea farming industry are hurtling along the exact same path that we had with kauri milling and the seal skin trade for example. Now we can argue all day about the detail around that, but that is what I see in the eyes of King Salmon and dairy operators – it is in fact a form of outright greed with little care for future generations. Surely I don’t have to describe the state of rivers and creeks in virtually every farming region. It hasn’t stopped. (but I don’t want to get into an argument about this)

My truly main point is the one I made a little after that – which was that at some point these industries will simplynot be able to grow in this manner (taking direcrtly from the environment) and they will have to think outside the square for growth. My suggestion is that this thinking be applied now and the environment-taking be stopped. It has to be done anyway so why not do it now and save what’s left of, in this example, the waterways and the Marlborough Sounds?? ?? Save what’s left of our stunning environment for our children and think of other ways to grow. It has to be done anyway so lets do it now and stop being lazy pricks.

To all those other people who have jumped up and down and accused me of being a luddite etc – try posting something worth reading. In fact, if you think about it, it is you who are the luddites as you stick vehemently to the ways of the kauri milling past – think ahead and in new ways you luddites.

That is not “early” by the standards of the workforce; but of course you wouldn’t know that. In fact, there nothing unusual in getting up at 5.30 am or even earlier. People do that in order to go to work. And indeed, the magical hour of 5.30am at which time you assert that you arise from your stupor, coincides with a time that many people are just getting home from work.

So tell me, after getting up at 5.30am, how long do you have to wait outside the library to start working harder than any other solo parent; or perhaps even, anyone else on the planet?

BTW, its always amusing to see you disappear after a point blank and indisputable rebuttle of your facile attempts to play the “don’t pick on my boy” card. As you said yourself: “those facts are scary things …”

Nostalgia-NZ: His views may be challenging at times, but that’s nothing special – my daughter had challenging views at the age of 10. But I could have a reasoned debate with her, even then. As thedavincimode has just pointed out, philu tends to just disappear, change tack, or ignore anything he doesn’t like.

Anyway … I’m done wasting my time and energy on him. And that includes wasting time and energy even talking about him. Goodbye to that conversation as well.
