The one protesting against the drilling of the gas exploration well is Britt Moore who runs several businesses on Stewart Island.
As with most ‘Greenies’ she is either not to bright or an absolute hypocrite (probably both). Without fossil fuels none of those ‘eco-tourists’ will be able to visit Stewart Island and all her businesses will fail.
As with most of them, she wants her cake and eat it too.

Trains costing an arm and a leg

And these trains are actually connecting fairly large population centres.
Not a fun loop going from a place nobody wants to go to a place nobody lives….

Spending up to $2.4 billion.
Rate payers and tax payers will foot most (If not all) of the bill.
Is there ANYBODY (Except Len and his mates) that think this is a good idea?

I’m not sure about the proposed Auckland rail scheme. I gather the government is not too keen, although I wonder if that would have been different had John Banks won the mayoral election. Can anyone confirm that the BCR for this project is better than most major roading projects?

I have no idea but there are several other things that need to be taken into consideration apart from the BCR.
Whatever the comparison between roading projects and this ‘rail project’ anybody can see this one is a total waste of money.
As I said, this is a fun loop going from a place nobody wants to go to a place nobody lives.
Why were existing tram services stopped in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in the first place?

Yes I do and it would have cost much less if it had been done in Robbie's Day but you know these dumb jaffas and their love of cars.

I don’t have much of an idea about light rail. I know it has been proposed in Wellington, for a route between the railway station and the airport, but I doubt this will stack up against bus enhancements.
The Auckland project seems to have a bit more going for it, but it’s a long way off decision time for its business case.

My, my, a constructive comment…

Yes, I would like to see the business case. I have seen a few BCR’s about rail vs Road and the one thing that they always seem to forget is the fact that a road is not only used by cars but also by trucks, busses, cyclists and pedestrians. Len’s light rail is exclusively for passengers.
I do support the idea that motorways should be funded by road taxes and fuel taxes only.
‘Normal’ roads are a bit more complex as they are also used by others who are not paying road and fuel taxes (cyclists and pedestrians).
And yes, I also support light rail but only if it is self funding.
There seem to be however very few places where that is the case.

Auckland had a light rail (tram) service from 1902 to 1956. There was a good reason why it was stopped jcuk.
The reason why it was stopped in 1956 is probably still valid (economically not viable).

With Auckland expected to increase its population by another million people it is essential that there be better public transport. I am sure most of that extra million will be lower paid people who are unlikely to be able to afford their own transport and will need public services. In my travels overseas I have noted it is the poor that predominently use public transport so asking if is ecconomical is pure rightwing foolishness … the irresponsible people who cannot think past their own noses. Trams gave way to superior transoport of the time and cannot be equated with light rail …I wonder if the people such as Other Andy have any personal experience of travelling on light rail as i have during several overseas trips.

Places where carparks are provided in the suburbs and light rail takes you into the city where in one place Denver there is free electric bus service along the main street. Some right wing predominating areas do exhibit common sense.
