Left this on the Batman thread from yesterday –

In a society where people play violent video games every day (that are getting more and more realistic), and where movies and TV are becoming more overtly violent, it doesn’t surprise me that the society will soak it up. I’m not saying these things are entirely to blame, but it MUST have some effect on individuals. It can’t not.

As the culture turns to violence for entertainment, we’re getting the effects right back.

Not to say that the guy wasn’t deranged to begin with – he obviously was.

A few million in legal fees to beat of Big Tobacco? Too much. Carrick Graham, the Big Tobacco lobbyist, will get a huge bonus for is one. Maybe he can pay his dad’s legal fees?

Can bloggers please provide the names of the other lobbyists who have been involved in this “successful” campaign? It will be worth a few hundred million to Big Tobacco. It will cost the Taxpayer a billion in Health costs.

Don’t let facts get in the way of some good ‘punch-lines’ and insinuations.

Treasury has calculated that the revenue gathered through tobacco taxes exceeds the health costs of smoking, and smokers further save the government money because they don’t live as long as non-smokers.
A University of Otago study in 2007 estimated that the direct cost of smoking to the Ministry of Health was $300 million to $350 million. The Government’s tax take from tobacco is around $1.3 billion.

Any other unsubstantiated claims?

The police and the court clearly have little respect for the efforts of these hard done by mums who have valiantly supplemented their benefit with some home-grown enterprise. Please bring your erudite and compassionate influence to bear on those of us who are slowly but surely gravitating to the view that their children should be taken away from them and they should never recieve another state (taxpayer) benefit.

He also said that it had not been shown to be a proven method of reducing smoking because most people know what brand they smoke. He said that we are not bound by the same provisions that Aussie appears to have accepted and which priovides an arguable cause of action. He also said that Tim Groser had told him that the preliminary view was tht we had nothing to worry about but that if the issue of plain packaging goes onto the agenda they will address the prospects in earnest. But don’t let facts like that get in the way of a good rant.

Did anyone else catch Racheal Smalley’s soft soft interview with a member of the New Zealand Council for Women? The UN is alarmed about the status of women in New Zealand (because the NZCW complained to a UN committee under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in New York).

Not enough female MPs, not enough board members . . . could it be because women don’t want to do it?

“So if you believe in equality . . . you’re a feminist?” “Er, yes.”

Er no, is more like it . . . there were no questions about the life expectancy of men widening from women who live longer, no expression of concern that men are going to university at something like a 50% lesser rate than women, or that boys are being failed by the education system.

This sort of horse shit is yet another reason for the Ministry of Women’s Affairs to go, with the $6m per year it costs spent instead on the prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder — that’s where many of your wife-beaters and violent criminals come from, and it is women responsible for the creation of 3000 sawn off kids per year and no-one seems to give a damn because it would involve stigmatising pregnant women who hit the piss fags and p pipes.

These lobby ministries are like a jammed rudder on a boat steering us in circles.

First of all, I wonder where this is going. Why stop with women. What about people with disabilities and what about (Some of the lefts favourite identity groups) homosexuals and people of didfferent races and-or ethnicities.

The reason for this NZX requirement is that, according to them, “there was credible evidence that suggested diversity, particularly around gender, at both board and senior management levels contributed to improved financial performance.”

I am wondering how they measure that….

Looking at the ‘diversity policy’ on the NZX website it tells me that the “NZX will work with the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and agencies such as the 25% Group and Global Women, who are supporting companies to develop and implement their own gender diversity policies.”

Wonderful. So lets have a look at one of the organisations that is promoting this idea, the Global Women organisation.
I suggest they think this is a good idea because they support the NZX statement that “”there was credible evidence that suggested diversity, particularly around gender, at both board and senior management levels contributed to improved financial performance.”

Apparently not.

Smith allegations don’t appear to harm future

The latest allegations surrounding former minister Nick Smith don’t seem to have harmed his chances of becoming a Cabinet Minister sometime in the future.

Opposition parties accused him of handing money to his mates in setting up the $180,000 Sustainable Futures Trust which worked on issues around water allocation in the Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki Valley.

Dr Smith and the Prime Minister say he did nothing wrong.

John Key says a number of issues have to be looked at before Dr Smith can return to cabinet, including the results of a report into privacy issues at ACC.

Dr Smith resigned from cabinet after allegations in the Bronwyn Pullar ACC privacy breaches case.

While many critics in the poor and largely conservative country attacked the sea change in drug policy, fearing it would lead to drug tourism while simultaneously worsening the country’s already shockingly high rate of hard drug use, a report published in 2009 by the Cato Institute tells a different story. Glenn Greenwald, the attorney and author who conducted the research, told Time: “Judging by every metric, drug decriminalization in Portugal has been a resounding success. It has enabled the Portuguese government to manage and control the drug problem far better than virtually every other Western country.”

In general I don’t have any need to use Māori language – and I don’t like the use of it being forced on me – but I think it’s interesting to learn some of it and understand it better. There’s already quite a bit of Māori language interspersed with New Zild – and it doesn’t do any harm to learn a bit more.

Freedom to lend certainly has come to an ignominious end.

Alan Gibbs is flying around the world on his helicopter and the urbanisation of humanity is teensy-weensy (Hugh Pavletich and the late Owen McShane say/said the same things: the Earth hardly knows humans are here). There are vast tracks of land in Africa and Ukraine etc, etc. Also the environment has “never been better”…. (he doesn’t accept global warming is a problem). I suppose if he did it would spoil his fun (can’t have that). Must be nice to park the chopper and check in at the Ritz.
One can see the benefits of choosing what one believes?

New Zealand Constitution: Why iwi have got it wrong

There is deep disquiet throughout the country about iwi claims for water rights.

However by focussing on the resource itself; previously the foreshore and seabed, this time water, next time airwaves, geothermal energy, and so on, we are in danger of overlooking the source of the issue, of overlooking why such claims can be made in the first place. To find the fundamental flaw in the tribes’ case for the ownership of public resources such as water we need look not only at what is to be owned but at who is claiming ownership. The essence of the tribal claim is that iwi represent a separate ‘public’ – the Maori people – and are therefore entitled to own the resources of that ‘public’.

The claim that iwi constitute a separate polity with its own public is ambitious politics. If it were indeed the case then New Zealand would not be one nation but two. It may well be that in the future New Zealand does break up into two separate nations, but at present ‘New Zealand’ is the political entity and its public are all the nation’s citizens. This means that citizenship, not tribal membership, is the political category. All New Zealanders belong to this national category.

Instead of breaking the country up perhaps we should have an experiment ,scientifically based,the South Island could run as a democracy,one man one vote,no maori stuff for say ten years and if we like it extend it to the rest ?Wouldn’t need to be packaged in a flax basket motif or anything like that. Maori Party policy wouldn’ t apply and they could start growing tobacco in Nelson again,along with the excellent hops that already comes from there.We could have duty free smokes and alcohol on the ferry too,that would boost tourism!

but the north coulld still be fraternal and pay for the CHCH rebuild 🙂

In any case the story you link to doesn’t say this. When the massacre story first broke it was reported that it was due to the Government, who it turn denied it and claimed it was by the rebels. After a while stories started circulating in the west that the Government was right and that in this case the massacre was in fact carried out by the rebels. The UN came out and said that they couldn’t say for sure. The spiegel story that you link concludes that it is indeed murky but that the massacre was almost certainly due to the Government as originally claimed, not the rebels.

How do you explain BTW someone predicting all the popes since the 12th century? Coincidence? Why don’t you try to get that into a lab and replicate it? Of course you can’t, so what are you science fanatics going to do? Shut your eyes and ears and pretend it didn’t happen? Shout la la la la la la la la la? I’m sure you’ll think of something. Of course it’s much easier if you simply confess your foolishness to God and sincerely ask Him to show you the way and simply open the bible. The rest will follow from there.

Ah well. You’ve probably got a few years but if I were you, I wouldn’t tarry too long. The old death-bed confession strategy has its risks and at the end of the day, when you turn to Christianity, you never have to give anything up that was worthwhile keeping anyway. That’s just part of how it works.

It’s my observation that Reid doesn’t believe in socialism. Perhaps it’s because like any rational person he has looked at it’s success rate and noted that it’s always failed. What keeps you going believing that we just need to give it one more try and we’ll get it right when that never has been the case anywhere ever when it’s been tried.

It would appear that the translation may have caused some consternation way, way back. From Wikipedia:

Yeah fraid I disagree with ya mm. One of the links I gave ran down the last ten. That does OK. I could find dozens of other sites that give much much more detail.

So tell me mm, why are you skeptical that the next pope is the last pope? Personally, I’m surprised there’s going to be even one more, the way its been going, apostasy-wise. For those who have eyes and ears of course. If your’s haven’t been stinging and burning well you haven’t been paying much attention, have you.

The 1930s stands out as the hottest decade, the 1910s and 1950s were second, 1990s third and 1980s fourth. This decade doesn’t rank yet. 1935 for example saw 9.635 weather records and 1936 9.832 weather records.

…… which is not unusual as the 20th century saw some very cold weather periods. A recent paper contributed half of global warming on weather station data homogenization. Urban Heat Effect has also influenced temperature readings at weather stations. By the way, the 20th-century average was only exceeded by less than a degree Celsius.

No we don’t live in interesting times weather-wise.
It is hot, cold, wet and dry like it has been for the last 4.5 billion years.
What is interesting is the mass delusion and hysteria.
