Almost a third of the population could be addicted to food – yet struggling addicts received no support or funding

There was I thinking the cure to obesity was less food and more exercise… when really what’s needed is another state-funded program.

Destructive, nasty, corrosive, contagious politics continues because it is allowed to continue, unquestioned and often aided and abetted by media. But that doesn’t make it right, nor does it make it good for our democracy.

At the moment the situation only shows the inability of the Opposition Parties to successfully land one on John Key.
The whole country now knows that Key places holding power – without all the krap of a by-election [which National would likely win] or a general election – above John Banks dishonesty, because that is also so well revealed it is fundamentally not a problem [if fucking around with something no one much cared about ever was a problem]

The only difficulty in both Banks’ and Key’s position is that if this dishonesty is expedient what else may be. But did we really rely on the idea that either was an Honest John anyway? Or, by definition, any other politician.

The Opposition would do much better to just drop this, as Megaload Dotcom suggests, and ask things like
• Why hold hui to discuss “greater than 10% voting rights” for any party other than the Crown’s 49%, when that breaks National’s Election promise?
• What actually is in the TPP?
• In view of directors who have gone to jail for poor prospectus information, who in Government is going to front and guarantee the share sale in Mighty River Power given the unpredictable iwi factor?

Dom Post had photo (not on Stuff) of Mr Dotcom in Parliament without a visitor’s sticker. Is there one rule for the likes of him and another for ordinary mortals visiting Parliament. My inclination to go there is almost nil because of security requirements.

If there can be a ‘blind’ rule for this, it is stacked against the facts and that’s contempt for the electorate. If JK chooses to see no evil while the public can, he is seen as essentially forsaking trust. As you say if we can’t trust him for what we see before us, then how can he be trusted on other issues of which there is not the same public knowledge. I’m glad you raised it in this way. This hasn’t been dealt with in the right way regardless of whether the opposition fail to make an impact on the issue. JK is saying that Banks can be trusted when the police report indicates he can’t.

Mr Dotcom is a special person.
He gave Banks money in the understanding, from his overseas background, that money buys politicians.
This did not work, but maybe it would have done under a Labour/Green person.
Hell hath no fury when Dotcom was scourned when he found himeself in jail with a lumpy mattress.
In other countries, where he is familiar with the power of money these kinds of things can be bought.
He picked the wrong politician here – this time.
Why am I losing sympathy for Mr Dotcom – he is becoming, like the Ridges, one of our new publicity seeking stars, presumably to get public and media support to his deportation case.

Because it is unsubstantiated as far as I can see. Your link cites “tayyor.org” which cited the AFP as a source. The AFP has denied being the source of any such reports.

Presumably autopsy results will reveal what happened.

And indeed all that is needed for alcohol addiction is less alcohol… but what is the rational response to someone’s irrational behaviour? Ignore them and hope their problem won’t impact you or fund services which may help address their problem before it reaches you?

Does it not make sense to emphasize preventative medical care over ambulance-at-the-bottom-of-the-cliff care? These people can’t, or won’t, help themselves and I’m not sure moral condemnation and righteous indignation will change it either. Perhaps programs designed to address the underlying factors affecting their behaviour will help and may save money down the line.

Pathological obesity needs interevention but probably hasnt increased much.

Overweight is not a disease – it allowed our ancestors to survive and the colonisation of the pacific. The increase is mainly due to the aging [population and the redefintion of overweight/obesity.

Also the links between obesity and other diseases are not as strong as the troughers say. Type 2 diabetes is inceasing because of aging and setting the bar lower, and most cases are mild and the hysteria is not justified. Hopefuly the new glycolated haemoglobin test will fix the overdiagnosis problem.

Mr Gillespie, PhD (?) ….
I am just a simple man, so I must have missed the law change.
Pray tell, when did the New Zealand Police gain the right to (KGB-like) determine guilt or innocence?
A cursory examination of the issues, Mr Gillespie, would disclose a double standard in respect of the
earlier “teapot” investigation/saga and Banks “best knowledge and belief etc”, would it not?.

Ergo, Mr Gillespie:
“Quis custodiet ipsos custodes ?”
Who guards the guardians, or who checks the checkers?

Finally, Mr Gillespie, why stop at a code of conduct? Why not have every Parliamentary action/inaction court reviewable?

AN ACTION PLAN TO PREVENT CORRUPTION – ‘WHITE COLLAR’ CRIME & ‘CORPORATE WELFARE’ IN NZ:

1. Get our anti-corruption domestic legislative framework in place so NZ can ratify the UN Convention Against Corruption.

2. Set up an NZ independent anti-corruption body tasked with educating the public and PREVENTING corruption.

3. Change NZ laws to ensure genuine transparency in the funding of candidates for elected public office and political parties at central and local government level.

4. Legislate for an enforceable ‘Code of Conduct’ for NZ Members of Parliament (who make the rules for everyone else).

5. Make it an offence under the Local Government Act 2002 for NZ Local Government elected representatives to breach their ‘Code of Conduct’.

6. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available ‘Register of Interests’ for NZ Local Government elected representatives.

7. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available ‘Register of Interests’ for NZ Central Government staff responsible for property and procurement, (including the Ministry of Health), in order to help prevent ‘conflicts of interest’.

8. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available ‘Register of Interests’ for NZ Local Government staff, and Directors and staff employed by ‘Council-Controlled Organisations (CCOs) responsible for property and procurement.

9. Make it a lawful requirement for details of ‘contracts issued’ – including the name of the contractor; scope, term and value of the contract to be published in NZ Central Government Public Sector, and Local Government (Council), and ‘Council-Controlled Organisation (CCO) Annual Reports so that they are available for public scrutiny.

10. Make it a lawful requirement that a ‘cost-benefit analysis’ of NZ Central Government, and Local Government public finances be undertaken to prove that private procurement of public services previously provided ‘in-house’ is cost-effective for the public majority. If not – then return public service provision to staff directly employed ‘in-house’ and cut out these private contractors who are effectively dependent on ‘corporate welfare’.

11. Legislate for a legally-enforcable ‘Code of Conduct’ for members of the NZ Judiciary, to ensure they are not ‘above the law’.

12. Ensure that ALL NZ Court proceedings are recorded, and audio records made available to parties who request them.

13. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available NZ Judicial ‘Register of Interests’, to help prevent ‘conflicts of interest’.

14. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available NZ ‘Register of Lobbyists’ and ‘Code of Conduct for Lobbyists’ at Central Government Ministerial level.

15. Make it a lawful requirement at NZ Central and Local Government level for a ‘post-separation employment quarantine’ period from the time officials leave the public service to take up a similar role in the private sector. (Help stop the ‘revolving door’).

16. Make it a lawful requirement that it is only a binding vote of the public majority that can determine whether public assets held at NZ Central or Local Government level are sold; or long-term leased via Public-Private –Partnerships (PPPs).

17. Make it unlawful for politicians to knowingly misrepresent their policies prior to election at central or local government level.

18. Make laws to protect individuals, NGOs and community-based organisations who are ‘whistleblowing’ against ‘conflicts of interest’ and corrupt practices at central and local government level and within the judiciary.

19. Legislate to help stop ‘State Capture’, a form of ‘grand corruption’ arguably endemic in NZ – where vested interests get their way at the ‘policy level’ before legislation is passed which serves their interests.

Penny, as I’ve commented several times, I am in total agreement with two particular points of the Draft Action Plan. These points, specifically:

4. Legislate for an enforceable ‘Code of Conduct’ for NZ Members of Parliament (who make the rules for everyone else).

5. Make it an offence under the Local Government Act 2002 for NZ Local Government elected representatives to breach their ‘Code of Conduct’.

In all seriousness, I think the behaviour of some of our MPs over the past years has been quite disgusting. And I completely endorse the sentiment that those people who make the rules for everyone else, should be held accountable. I have found it quite bizarre that we allow people such as Hone Harawira into Parliament, when he openly states that he will not obey the laws of the land if he happens to disagree with them.

And I’m equally in agreement with the sentiment of point 5, extending this ‘Code of Conduct’ to Local Government elected representatives. So, presumably, somebody standing for public office who was found to have STOLEN water, encouraged others to STEAL water, STOLEN electricity (as part of the Occupy movement), would not be looked upon very favourably under this ‘Code of Conduct’. And as for somebody standing for public office who proceeded to VANDALISE AND DEFACE the billboards of her opponents during the campaign – that wouldn’t be very seemly, now would it?

So Penny – here’s my question. It’s a very simple one. Would YOU, Penny Bright, agree to abide by such a Code of Conduct if you were elected to any form of office? Very simple question, a yes or no will do fine, thank you.

It was revealing that, notwithstanding his talk about the rich having to pay more tax, when Buffet gave away his own excess billions he mostly certainly didn’t give them to the government to be pissed away by self-serving politicians buying the votes of special-interest groups. Instead he gave them to Bill Gates’ private foundation where the money will actually serve its intended philanthropic purpose and help genuinely poor people.

Anyway, next time a Labour or Green MP calls for higher taxation, just point out that the current rates are minimum levels. Ask them how much they voluntarily paid over and above those minimums. And ask them if they make use of trusts to keep their taxes low.

The use of the Romanian gypsies in the photo is interesting. They are as a group some of the worst cross border criminals and welfare bludgers in the EU,and have been described as a crime wave on legs. I wouldn’t want any to be able to come to NZ to “diversify” our proud Anglo Saxon culture.

Obesity epidemic/addiction.
When I were a young lad these issues (not alcholism) were described as “habits”. I believe most of these addictions are habits.
Fat bastards are habitually stuffing their faces ,have no personal discipline and don’t exercise.
But if one can medicalise the problem one can get funding.Follow the money.
The west is addicted to spending taxpayer money and that’s why we’re broke.

I’m disturbed that the MSM portray the Charlie Hebdo cartoons as “mockery” , “inflamatory” etcThey also talk of the Prophet Mohammed rather than the Muslim or Islamic prophet Mohammed.They are ascribing a status to him that I have noticed in recent years is often no longer given to Christianity.

The Charlie cartoons are set in the context of the riots that have been incited by Muslims clerics as a deliberate response to the movie and events in Germany.
As such the publication is legitimate in terms of western notions of free speech. Any re action is entirely the responsibility of the perpetrators of the reaction.

While the death penalty no longer applies we have a modern secular treason. It has to do with race,gender,health,equality etc

Wilders,Bolt,Steyn,Galiano,Bardot.Authors gaoled and can’t travel due to “Holocaust denial”, plain packaging of tobacco products,limitations on fizzy drink sizes ,parents criminalised for disciplining their children……..

Don’t blame all religion for the perpetual outrage of the Islamic mob. Thin skinned? We need to reassess the whole human rights industry. The reaction of western governments to these latest Muslim outbursts will also be along the lines of human rights “respect” for religious minorities…….. a respect not accorded to indigenous Christians.

Other than that I go along with most of what you stated. Human rights has become the new religion & as such is deserving of the same respect & veneration I have for the old faiths, ie none. To go back to the theme of human rights abuse. The UN and other supra national bodies will drive this through and then our stupid parliamentarians will embody it in national legislation.Plenty of precedent.

Human rights law, Bills of Rights etc do not create new freedoms they actually remove ancient ones.The most important being freedom of conscience and expression,then they remove the other ones slowly but surely.

Mr Dotcom is a special person.
He gave Banks money in the understanding, from his overseas background, that money buys politicians.
This did not work, but maybe it would have done under a Labour/Green person.
Hell hath no fury when Dotcom was scourned when he found himeself in jail with a lumpy mattress.
In other countries, where he is familiar with the power of money these kinds of things can be bought.
He picked the wrong politician here – this time.
Why am I losing sympathy for Mr Dotcom – he is becoming, like the Ridges, one of our new publicity seeking stars, presumably to get public and media support to his deportation case.

AHH. whyis it that a large collection of people appear unable to either read or listen.

Dotcom refuted that infomation in front of TV yesterday. And as for Banks, he has always been a slimy prick. Why would you not have recognized that years ago.

The US Government was trying to use an extradition process in which Kim Dotcom had “both hands tied behind his back” due to withholding of evidence, the Court of Appeal has been told.

…

The Government says the process it has opted to use – record of the case – requires only a statement summarising the allegations. The statement was presumed to be reliable unless a district court judge says it is inadequate and invites the Government to add to it.

I can’t find anywhere in the Extradition Act where this presumption is made. Section 25 of the Act merely states that a “record of case” may be admitted as evidence. Nowhere does the Act appear to limit the persons right to natural justice and to have access to the evidence necessary for a fair hearing to take place.

But Dotcom’s lawyer, Paul Davison, QC, said under New Zealand law a person facing extradition was entitled to rely on guarantees of justice. The extradition process was comparable to deciding whether there was enough evidence to justify putting an accused on trial for an offence committed in New Zealand.

He is right of course. Section 22(1)(a) the Act states:

…the court has the same jurisdiction and powers, and must conduct the proceedings in the same manner, as if the proceedings were a committal hearing of an information for an indictable offence alleged to have been committed within the jurisdiction of New Zealand…

As far as I’m aware a defendant at a committal hearing has a right to access the prosecution’s evidence for the purposes of a fair hearing. Without such access how can a defendant properly participate in the committal hearing? Similarly how can they properly participate in the extradition hearing?

Seems the United States just wants to be able to hand us a note and we simply hand over whomever they demand. How can a court properly satisfy itself that there is enough evidence to warrant a trial if there is no avenue to review that evidence?

The trailer for, ‘ Innocence of Muslims’ is a FACTUAL representation of the life of Mohammed.

Where is any muslim, any muslim lover, or any self hating Kiwi that can point to any part of it that

I’m afraid one will never understand Muslims unless and until one realises they’re human first, muslim second.

Frankly I’m at a loss to understand why many, many people in the west even need that basic truth explicated, and yet they do.

I know you’re discerning enough to know the difference and this comment isn’t directed at you.

But such sentiment is unhelpful, in exactly the same way that laughing at niggers is unhelpful.

Isn’t it interesting BTW that many many western people today would truly believe in their heart such a thought to be an anaethema and yet in the very same thought process they completely overlook all of that and go and toss over the ragheads.

That’s what propaganda does. It veils that simple logic by fooling you into pretending that four legs is good, and two legs is bad.

Edit: to the PC police, I used the n word to make a point, not gratuitously, in case one can’t tell the diff.

Dear John,

This is a follow-up letter to check whether the ‘Open Letter’ hand-delivered to your Electorate Office (27 Gillies Ave) on Tuesday 18 September 2012, has been brought to your attention?

You will note that I also emailed the following correspondence to you on the same day.

I do understand that your memory is sometimes not as reliable as members of the voting public might expect of someone holding a Ministerial warrant, such as yourself, but I am keen to get a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to my request, that YOU please be the Member of Parliament to present the following petition to the House, at your earliest available opportunity:

“That the House conduct an urgent inquiry into the findings of the Police investigation into the allegations that the Hon. John Archibald Banks, CNZM QSO, submitted a false donation return in respect to the Auckland Council Mayoral election 2010 – that it was not unlawful for the Hon. John Archibald Banks, CNZM QSO to sign and transmit his candidate’s declaration of expenses without first personally checking and verifying that the information provided (by another party) was accurate.”

You must admit that it does seem rather extraordinary for it apparently to be lawful for a candidate to be able to sign off a declaration of expenses without first double-checking its accuracy?

Can you please confirm whether you are prepared to present this petition – YES or NO?

If YES, I will organise how best get the signed copies to you without breaching the two year trespass notice from 27 Gillies Ave Newmarket which I incurred, arising from my arrest for wilful trespass at your electorate office on 18 June 2012.

If NO – I will continue to seek the assistance of other MPs from other parties.

Perhaps Prime Minister John Key, the MP for Helensville, may be prepared to assist on this matter – if you can’t /won’t?

What on earth, in your mind, is its relevance to my effort @ 6.35 ?

One can pick and choose characteristics bereal, but a person is a whole entity, not just a small portion that one chooses to highlight. I have no idea who Muhammed was, I’ve never studied him, I’m just not interested. But if you wish to comment on him as a person in the way you did, then it seems to me one should therefore be aware of all of him, not just a little bit of him. And if he was just what you say, I seriously doubt he would have formed the basis of an entire religion. I may be wrong, that may be all he was. Apologies to you if that is the case.

The world’s MSM are making a big deal of Charlie Hebdo and insult to Mohammed.
The cover shows Mo and an orthodox Jew.

While some ultra Orthodox Jews are pretty shitty to Christians and non observant Israelis in Israel I don’t think they’re the ones who’ll be throwing the firebombs after Friday inflamatory sermons,I mean, prayers down at the world’s mosques.

The editor has made the point that of all their issues only 3 have been problematic and guess who was involved in all 3?

So he’s going to tell the banks where to spend their money. Dumb fuck, thicker than 2 short banks.
Once more we will continue into the high interest rate regime that the Reserve seems to think does something. Well it does it sends us broke and onto benefits.
