King Tuheitia’s spokesman is trying to keep Maori in line with the hui resolutions…

King Tuheitia’s spokesman Tuku Morgan is emphatic that all iwi leaders must stick to resolutions passed at the King’s water summit, which include working out a framework for water rights before iwi negotiate with the Crown.

… but even the King’s local iwi is resisting his attempt to rule and claiming continued autonomy.

From my perspective … every iwi and every hapu has their right to their autonomy and that includes Waikato-Tainui.

It shouldn’t be surprising that Maori are resisting King Tuheitia rule?

Suicide: it’s time to talk about it

Dave Armstrong opens up a discussion on something we’re not supposed to talk about, apparently.

According to some experts, publicising the issue can cause more harm than good. But can discussing a problem really make it worse?

Our annual suicide rate is nearly double the road toll, and more than 50 times the number of New Zealand soldiers killed in Afghanistan since the United States invaded.

Though I agree that glamorising suicide can have negative effects, the statistics show that our “don’t mention it” strategy isn’t working. Can you imagine a health professional saying we shouldn’t talk about Aids in the hope that the resulting silence will mean people eventually stop having unsafe sex?

When our road toll was deemed way too high, co-ordinated national action was taken. Causes were identified, government agencies took the lead, and society followed. It became unfashionable to drink and drive, and to not wear seatbelts.

Generally New Zealanders haven’t been good at discussing thinks openly, especially men, the ‘strong silent’ type. Can we and should wem be much more open about suicide?

But can we openly discuss suicide without slinging mud at each other? Surely if we can be bi-partisan about congratulating our Olympic athletes then we can be united on suicide prevention.

I look forward to a rigorous and respectful national conversation on suicide. I know people say we need “dooeys” not huis, but more talk could get the issue out into the open and positive action could result. Don’t be scared to talk about suicide – the life of someone you love may depend on it.

How many lives risked versus how many lives potentially saved by openiong up this discussion?

Ngati Tuwharetoa and Te Arawa leaders have taken a different approach to a government hui near Taupo today [last Friday] by turning out in force …
At the summit 1000 Maori voted to support a unified approach to water claims and to support the establishment of a new body to establish a framework over water rights.
Sir Tumu te Heuheu said he was “compelled by circumstances” to clarify his iwi’s position.

“Ngati Tuwharetoa is in an extraordinary position of having customary … and proprietary rights over the very lakes, waterways and geothermal fields [where energy companies operate].

He outlined that the tribe was still waiting “patiently” for the Waitangi Tribunal to report back on its 2006 geothermal and hydroelectric claim and said he had been mandated through multiple internal hui to deal direct with the government – he hoped that would not change.

Why is the New Zealand public being lied to?
For surely it is dishonest to discuss something and hide other facts related to it.
The Waitangi Tribunal and King Tuheitia’s hui have given the impression that water rights are a new issue needing immediate attention by all Maori.
In fact –

• The Crown and Waikato-Tainui signed a deed of settlement in August 2008, providing a $220 million clean-up fund and co-governance over the river environment. The revised deed streamlines the co-governance arrangement and retains the clean-up fund.
The revised deed establishes a single co-governance entity, the Waikato River Authority.

• At today’s [Friday, 14 September 2012] meeting of the Iwi Chairs Forum at Turangawaewae Marae more than 45 iwi organisations unanimously passed formal resolutions endorsing the Freshwater Iwi Leaders Group and its continued engagement with the Crown.
The call for kotahitanga arising from the previous day’s water hui was acknowledged. However, it was made very clear by the assembled iwi that the mechanisms for working together are matters for each iwi to consider and discuss with their respective hapu and could not be imposed on iwi in some generic way.

I don’t agree with the Conservative campaign to wipe the Treaty of Waitangi from everything.

DECLARATION OF EQUALITY

There shall be one law for all:

We refuse to accept any reference to the Treaty of Waitangi or its principles in any constitutional document.
We require that such references be removed from all existing legislation.
We require that race-based Parliamentary seats be abolished.
We require that race-based representation on local bodies be abolished.
We require that the Waitangi Tribunal, which has outlived any usefulness it may have had, be abolished.

That’s a lot of ‘requiring’.

I think all of these things merit discussion but this sort of heavy handeness will cause more problems than it will resolve – even if a government decided to do any of it, which is very unlikely.

Remembrance Day for Victims of Crime….

Nobody thinks they will become a victim of crime but sadly far too many people have, and from that point on their lives and those of their families are changed forever.
But families of such crimes are hoping that a national remembrance day will help those affected live with the trauma but also help prevent further crime and victimization.
White Heart Trust was launched in Napier last year by Simon and Cathy Cowan; this year White Heart ‘Remembrance’ day will be held in three locations:
1. Auckland – Aotea Square:
2. Napier – Soundshell, Marine Parade
3. Wellington – Midland Park, Lambton Quay
Each event beginning at 12 noon will commence with a welcome by a local White Heart Trust spokesperson.
• Auckland – Hamish Cowan – Brother Phil Cowan, was murdered in March 2001.
• Napier – Simon Cowan – Chairman of the White Heart Trust – Son, Phil Cowan was murdered in March 2001
• Wellington – Angie Georgiou – Local victim advocate.

• Auckland – Ruth Money – of the Sensible Sentencing Trust – She is a long term advocate for victims rights in the justice system.

• Auckland – Tracey Marceau – her daughter Christie was murdered in November 2011, the accused was out on bail. Tracey prefers to remember Christie as a survivor rather than victim.
White Heart Day also has the support of the Sensible Sentencing Trust with Spokesman Garth McVicar saying it is hoped that White Heart Remembrance Day will be declared a national remembrance day in the near future.
“We think this is a win win for all concerned and it is our sincere hope that a political party will advocate for 25th September to become a day that New Zealanders can remember those who have lost their lives in some random act of violence.”

Under MMP there is no reason to have entrenched Maori representation. There are 650,000 persons who identify as Maori yet only 240000 of them are on the Maori roll. The number of each electorate in the Maori roll is only around 33000 for a seat in the general roll it is 50000. by this we can see that a greater amount of representation is given to those who chose to be on the moari roll than the population at large. This is a racist distortion of democracy one man one vote. The resulting distortions that racist seats give allow those who seek power among the Maori first movement power far in excess of their actual support among Maoridom.
The waitangi tribunal has used its position to overrule the government on asset sales. To continue the waitangi tribunal will allow the continued scope creep placing the tribunal as a force above the government. The government governs for the benefit of all the push by Maori is to govern for the benefit of only Maori

I support Maori. godamn my kids are Maori and I pay for them to go to uni because of the iwi trickle up principle.

What I dont support is mega-rich iwi elite who have been given their wealth by the taxpayer using poor Maori to grab even more resources for themselves.

That this happens is a fact, not a debate.

– to what degree
– who decides how much is enshrined

If we ever have a constitution it will have to be extensively discussed and commmonground will need to be worked out.

If the majority of people want to enshrine some ToW principles in a constitution would you accept that Griff?

Under MMP there is no reason to have entrenched Maori representation.

There is a reason – it’s what we’ve got. I personally prefer we didn’t have it any more, but to change it we would have to have a robust means of determining that it should change.

Having those on the Maori roll vote for a turkey’s Christmas is as unfair as a few Conservatives grinching it off them.

A good starting point would be guaging what ALL those who see themselves as Maori think of retaining the Maori seats or not.

On December 8, both parties announced a wide-ranging review to include matters such as the size of Parliament, the length of the electoral term, Māori representation, the role of the Treaty and whether New Zealand needs a written constitution.

How come only one of the three Huljich Wealth Management (NZ) Ltd Directors, Peter Huljich was ever charged for this strict liability offence?

It had been talked about unofficially way beck to Labour’s terms and national are sly little puppies for agreeing to it, because a power block in national and the remuera socialists want the “privatised” resources the claims have to offer, including getting rid of the queens chain that they have always detested.

Our constitution at present is made up of many and varied law and legislation. The aim of this review is to discuss our constitutional arrangements in effect this will be biased from a Maori perspective. Any results of this review into constitutional matters are by definition modification of our constitution. Be it into one or varied documents. As the push will be to place the nebulous” principles” in constitutional law it will be creating a racist constitution

Placing forward the stand point of no more treaty is discussing the shape our future should take Our future should not be founded on the apartheid doctrine inherent in the Maori interpretation of the treaty. Equal rights ,democracy and one law for all .Not special rights ,privilege by race and separate laws and representation for different races

Iwi businesses set themsleves up as charitible trusts and non-iwi business are expercted to compete with them.

Unfortunately wanting equality is the new racism on this Orwellian Planet Key.

There is nothing equal or level about suddenly halting and discarding all unsettled ToW claims.

Iwi businesses set themsleves up as charitible trusts and non-iwi business are expercted to compete with them.

Is there any evidence that Iwi businesses set themselves up as charitable trusts? If so, is it within the rules applied to all businesses and charities?

Even though the answer is yes, no one is suggesting getting rid of unsettled ToW claims.

Except the beaches – we need a party to come out and say it will recind it and not honour any contracts entered into in the meantime.

Is there any evidence that Iwi businesses set themselves up as charitable trusts? Yes look at the charities commission website.

If so, is it within the rules applied to all businesses and charities? No the dont – other businesses cannot set up a charities but many chairties blur this badly. The govt and IRD will not take on the iwi.

Throwing an idea out there based on damage done and the likely hood of it changing being slim to none!

Your thoughts on this idea :-

Assuming we, as a country, are hell bent on paying millions for the “perceived wrongs” of our useless Pommy ancestors then so be it; BUT only on these terms.

Settlements are in cash which is given in equal proportions to each clearly identified tribe member. It is then up to the individual member whether or not he keeps it or gives it back to the tribe to manage. Every member then benefits and has a choice. Obviously cash in the bank or “shares” in the Tribes trust/company are declarable to WINZ, DPB, Courts etc.
New Zealanders can then see the money going to poor Maori and they will all be able to grow their new found wealth however they choose. Surely- a lot more people will be “happier”????

Look forward to a detailed response from the likes of Peter, maoriman and bwav.

The government lost all perspective over this case and have bent over and been rammed a big one by the USA.

And, it enforces the fact we should never trust government not to abuse powers. The antismacking law comes to mind.

Prime Minister requests inquiry

Prime Minister John Key today announced he has requested an inquiry by the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security into the circumstances of unlawful interception of communications of certain individuals by the Government Communications Security Bureau.

Mr Key says the Crown has filed a memorandum in the High Court in the Megaupload case advising the Court and affected parties that the GCSB had acted unlawfully while assisting the Police to locate certain individuals subject to arrest warrants issued in the case. The Bureau had acquired communications in some instances without statutory authority.

After being informed about the matter by the Director of the GCSB on September 17, the Prime Minister referred the Bureau’s actions to the Inspector-General, Hon Paul Neazor. The Inspector-General is an independent statutory officer with the power to enquire into any matter related to a government intelligence agency’s compliance with the law.

Mr Key says he has also asked the Inspector-General to recommend any measures he considered necessary to prevent the issue from happening again.

Mr Key expressed his disappointment that unlawful acts had taken place.

“I expect our intelligence agencies to operate always within the law. Their operations depend on public trust.

“I look forward to the Inspector-General’s inquiry getting to the heart of what took place and what can be done about it,” says Mr Key. “Because this is also a matter for the High Court in its consideration of the Megaupload litigation, I am unable to comment further.”

This bastard longs for highers taxes in the UK. So, the decline would continue:

With the nation facing its longest period of belt-tightening since the war, the Deputy Prime Minister said the ‘top 10 per cent’ – around 3million earning more than £50,500 – should brace themselves for new levies.

Options include an end to tax relief on pension contributions for higher-rate taxpayers, an ‘accessions tax’ to replace inheritance tax, and further increases in capital gains tax.

Filthy scum. The economics of this makes no sense whatsoever, just as it doesnt here. If thee economies rely on the top 10% (who are only on 50k or more (or 100k or more here)) where the hell does all the other money the government has at its disposal to waste come from?

Job losses in the export sector are not adding to unemployment due to Australia taking up the slack.

I do wonder what the NZ unemployment rate would look like were aussie not taking our workers.

If China continues to slow down things could get quite nasty.

If they had fewer and looked after those they could afford to look after properly … and that applies to non Maori/Pacifica too.

Let’s not forget that Gareth Morgan thinks that people shouldn’t work if they don’t care to and should be paid a Universal Basic Income indefinitely by those that do.

That colours his op Ed somewhat.
