The Denver Post, on February 15th, ran an Associated Press article entitled Homeland Security aims to buy 1.6b rounds of ammo, so far to little notice. It confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security has issued an open purchase order for 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition. As reported elsewhere, some of this purchase order is for hollow-point rounds, forbidden by international law for use in war, along with a frightening amount specialized for snipers. Also reported elsewhere, at the height of the Iraq War the Army was expending less than 6 million rounds a month. Therefore 1.6 billion rounds would be enough to sustain a hot war for 20+ years. I think you will discover that hollow point .. Dum dum .. Projectiles are now more accepted. Safer for it to Expand or fragment in your target rather than a through and through and kill someone behind.

Let’s face it they are designed to kill so why not make it quick. I have seen a GSW where a copper jacket projectile has gone through a thigh and missing bone. Small hole either side and the guy had plenty of fight left in him.

David Clark has received plenty of attention lately, including from DPF. Some rate him as a rising Labour star. Craccum are featuring him in a regular debate with Jamie-Lee Ross and asked him:

Do you support the proposed SkyCity convention centre?

Clark chose not to answer this but instead launched into a famiiar sermon against National, straight from the good book of Labour PR:

‘Pokies’ and ‘porkies’. Those two words pretty much sum up the Government’s Sky City convention centre deal.

This issue isn’t about whether a convention centre is a good idea or not. It’s about the actions of the Ministers involved, actions the Auditor-General’s investigations found ‘were not consistent with best practice’ and were neither transparent nor fair.

He went on reciting familiar Labour lines, and ended with:

The Government must call a halt to its negotiations with Sky City and start again with a fair and open tender process. That is what Kiwis expect and deserve.

This is superficial politicking that adds nothing of substance to the convention centre debate, and going back to square one in the process is ludicrous.

Clark has risen quickly up the Labour ladder. If he wants to live up to the star hype he needs to step up, and sound like he can think for himself.

A FMJ round will punch a small neat hole in someone, that wounded person requires lots of care. The plan being not to kill the enemy but wound them as a wounded enemy sucks up lots more resources that a dead enemy.

A soft point (or ballistic tip or hollow point) round will be used for accurate shooting. The round needs to slow down a bit or it wont expand. In hunting if you shoot a deer very close up with a BT the projectile may shatter or punch straight thru whereas you really want the projectile to expend all of its energy within the animal and not exit the chest cavity.

Unless your using a projectile like a Barnes solid that is meant to expand and punch a hole thru for a “free flowing wound channel” 🙂 easy tracking to your deer.

RF, There are reportedly now 124 firearms companies that are participating in the Firearms Equality Movement. The companies refuse to supply product to any state government which legislates against the right of its citizens to keep and bear arms.

It will be interesting to see if this philosophy is extended to the DHS.

UglyTruth – AFAIK NZ Poice use ammo that is illegal for wartime use. The Police objective is to impose serious trauma that the alleged offender cannot react eg shooting back. The alleged offender is in that position by choice. In war, soldiers are often not there by choice – they are there by compultion or strong patriotism, including enormous peer group pressure.

Seems stange that Homeland Security needs 1.6B rounds, but then parameters such as contract term, number of armed people, rounds required for practice, etc was not mentioned. NZ Police would probably require 10,000 – 100,000 rounds for each one used ‘in ernest’.

If there is one shining light in all this it’s this: When the financial markets finally hit the wall, the people who will be hurt the most will not be the poor or even middle class. It will be the people who are holding all the paper promises (the 1%)

So far, all the government-induced distortions of the markets have been engineered to help the 1% (at the cost of everyone else.) But that game can only go on for so long and when it finally breaks the rapid descent and evaporation of paper wealth is going to be breathtaking.

Nature will take care of this. The curve will even out.

On Radio Left wing this morning hosted by Tweedledum and Tweedledee I listened – who couldn’t, without turning off, to Clayton Cosgrove – a “Clayton” being a Labour list MP when not a real MP, shouting the odds on how he was going to get ex Solid Energy boss on Thursday at the Commerce Select Committee.

I am sure that he was badly constipated as neither of the two Tweedle’s could get a word in edgeways. His rant was most interesting – he has said and done sweet fa since he got booted out at the last election so here was his “joure de gloire” so we cannot forget who he is. I doubt whether any Chairman is going to control him. He will need a good enema to slow him down.

He says he is going to take Dr Elder’s down along with the Government at the Committee.

Unfortunately in listening to him, it is going to be all about Clayton. He will be rude and arrogant as expected. in the hope that anybody will care.

He should pause to recognise that Elder is a very an experienced operator, who has actually worked for his living, and is not going to let the “Clayton” man upset him.

“Clayton” should realise that much of the planning for Solid Energy was approved under the Klark regime, and may come back to smack him.

Urban sprawl is the way we would like to live.
Councils are there to provide to us they are not there to dictate what we want.
Zoning creates artificial value capture at the cost of others access to the resource.
To say the cost of new infrastructure is prohibitive ignores the cost of expanding services in existing suburbs.
It is far more expensive to rip up and disrupt existing services to expand capacity.
I am staying in the zone targeted for urban renewal All that is happening is they are bulldozing 3 brm homes to build two Mc mansions. The working class can not afford to live in the city fringe ellerslie avondale and similar suburbs are just to valuable to build new low rent houses on.
Relax the zoning that creates thousands of ten acre millstones to allow more of us the choice of suburban country living.

It looks like ammo for the AR-15 rifle is very hard to come by in America at the moment, even at gun shows.

“You have any .22?,” I asked a dealer pricing boxes of ammunition at his table. “Nope,” he answered. “There’s none in here.”

He was right. Nothing. Not at any table.

I grabbed a few boxes of overpriced 9mm for the Glock and knew that was all I was taking home.

I get the feeling the run on “scary-looking assault weapons,” aka AR-15’s, aka semi-automatic rifles, has subsided, at least, for now. There were plenty of dealers selling, but I didn’t see many buyers.

Why? Well, for starters, there’s no ammo! Without ammo, it’s useless. The rifles have also increased significantly in price since the last time I visited the Expo Center in Fredericksburg, Va. back in December.

An hour before the doors opened, I stood in line with a vet and a young man in the Army. We noticed the lines weren’t nearly as long as those seen in Richmond just a month earlier. But, that was at 8:00am.

When I left at 10:45, there wasn’t an open parking spot, and the Wegman’s lot and surrounding strip malls looked suspiciously full. There was still a line to get inside the show, but it was moving.

“This administration is doing the exact opposite of what it wants to accomplish,” the vet said to me. “He’s the best gun salesman in the world,” I replied.

The younger man chimed in, mocking Sheriff Joe Biden’s lack of knowledge on the subject, and his constant gaffes on, well, almost everything.

I thanked them for their service before we parted ways. “Good luck, I hope you find what you came for,” one of them said.

Unfortunately, I didn’t.

When I got home an hour later I checked the usual online ammo dealers (as I do every time I sit down at my computer). There was nothing. No .22. No 9mm.

This is how it’s been for weeks. And I fear this is how it will be until the “gun-control” debate and attack on the 2nd Amendment subsides — if it ever does.

Until then, I’ll continue to buy a box here and there – that is, if DHS doesn’t buy it first.

Mark E. Kelly, gun-control proponent and husband to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, recently purchased an AR-15 (an “assault weapon,” he called it)—which he now says he intended as an illustration of the need for more stringent gun laws.

Kelly reportedly bought the AR-15 and a 1911-style semi-automatic pistol at Diamondback Police Supply in Tucson, Arizona.

Various sources contacted Breitbart News once Kelly made the purchase, and after we began investigating the details surrounding the purchase, Kelly announced on his Facebook that he was not going to keep the AR-15, which he has yet to pick up from the store.

Yeh, only because he got busted.

He could have just said ‘we looked back over 11,300 years and found there is nothing new about current temperatures.’

I don’t see how anyone can believe any figures ever produced by this govt ever again..First there was English who was told to increase EQC rates in 2008/9 and didn’t get around it to it leading to lots of problems in CHCH. Then there was another codger who didn’t get around to increasing the amount to be paid for a marine disaster..hence a big bill for the tax payer over the Rena.. Now we have Solid Energy wallies drawing figures out of a hat..The company was supposed to have increased in value by 600 per cent in one year and no one asked any questions. I know some of these people in SOE’s are former public servants but planting seeds in a place like Omarama and not knowing that they would need water is really a step too far.
Elder hasn’t even got the guts to go on Campbell Live tonight..He is sending some new staff member along.
Many people in CHCH are working so hard..It is an insult to everyone that Elder is here doing his weeding on 5,000 a day.
What is Mighty River power going to get into? Mermaid farming?

The Marcott ‘hockey stick’ splices the recent instrumental record on the end of a proxy record. The proxy record provides a 300 year smoothing – i.e very low resolution, so doesn’t show any of the peaks and troughs that might have occurred.
If you apply the same 300 year smoothing to the recent instrumental record it would be flat.

I’m not sure if this is fraud or just incompetence.

The weatherman.

Once upon a time the weatherman was a pleasant chap who would appear on telly around 7 pm and make predictions about the weather in the days ahead. These announcements were watched with great interest by the people. Of course he was always wildly inaccurate and only the gullible ever took the predictions seriously. It was good harmless fun, though some would take it literally and cancel events only to find clear sunny days, while others looking forward to sun would find the occasion swept away by rain and winds.

The malcontents and socialists noticed all the attention the humble weatherman was getting and became envious. They devised a plan. They asked some unemployed weathermen if they would like lots of money and have their guess work called “science”. They said that together they could rule the world. Most weathermen laughed at this, but some were tempted. At first they did not feel comfortable telling lies, but the socialists and malcontents explained that is was for the good and would result in a fairer more just world. So the weathermen agreed and broadcast that unless the socialist and malcontents got their way, the world would end.

More significantly, ‘benevolent sexism’ was found to be the strongest predictor for breast size rating – overshadowing factors like sexual objectification and hostility towards women. Study co-author Viren Swami explains: “Benevolently sexist men may perceive larger breasts as ”appropriate” for feminine women; in other words … a feminine and submissive woman is likely to be someone with large breasts.”

Ironically, this means it’s the ‘nice guys’ who pride themselves in holding open car doors, offer to pay for dinners and believe ladies are to be ‘admired’ and ‘put on a pedestal’ who are most likely to buy into traditional beauty ideals – like having a ‘feminine figure’ in this case.

Estimates of recent changes in Antarctic land ice (see above) range from losing 100 gigatons/year to over 300 gigatons/year. Because 360 gigatons/year represents an annual sea level rise of 1 mm/year, recent estimates indicate a contribution of between 0.27 mm/year and 0.83 mm/year coming from Antarctica. There is of course uncertainty in the estimations methods but multiple different types of measurement techniques (explained here) all show the same thing, Antarctica is losing land ice as a whole, and these losses are accelerating quickly.

The rise in sea level continues well after the time frame usually associated for climate change.
Estimates is the reason why we have error bars nothing is 100 percent certain*.

If you take the suggested maximum rise of 2 degrees as agreed to by the majority of countries and the midpoint of climate sensitivity estimates at 3C

We run out of room to expand co2 emissions in a decade or so.

If you take the science coming out about permafrost and methane seriously we are already locked into “CAGW” 😆

*except taxes!

That would be the same Greenpeace which lobbied against DDT

They lobbied unsuccessfully because although the 2001 Stockholm Convention banned most uses of organochlorine pesticides as persistent organic pollutants it specifically limited the use of DDT to malaria control.

Further to my post at 8.34am. The guy who was shot in the thigh with a 38 was a very stroppy individual and had to be handcuffed to the Ambulance stretcher. It was obvious the copper projectile that went straight through his thigh hardly slowed him down. A hollow point would have done the trick but he would have probably lost his leg. Its all history now and he is no longer with us.
