I may have done Jacinda Ardern a disservice yesterday, based on a misleading RNZ repot of her Social Lending proposal. Arderen has clarified:

These are low and sometimes no interest loans for families who otherwise cannot access mainstream lending products and are likely candidates for loan sharks, which as you know, have very high interest rates.

The loans are usually in the vicinity of $1500-$3000 and are accompanied by budget advice support to ensure there is a capacity to pay back the loan. The proof that it works well is in the Australian model, where default rates are well under the international tolerance for mainstream lending products.

This is not an answer to low incomes- that too must be addressed, but it is a way we can ensure that families avoid debt that exacerbates their issues.

That makes more sense. If it is done well with adequate assessment of ability to repay plus budget advice it would obviously be far better than people who can ill afford it getting encumbered with the exorbitant interest rates of loan sharks.

This is actually something that may be able to be started at least without legislation if banks can be encouraged to partner with existing budget services. That would be a worthwhile project for an opposition party MP, working on something positive instead of the more usual opposing of Government.

And Labour could do with more positive achievements to show they deserve some consideration next year.

The degree of Gilmorisation of political coverage is a low point in modern ‘journalism’.

dishy – that headline is more what I’d expect at The Standard on a grumpy day.

I sometimes get a bit of stick for linking – here’s some back.

Most of the time when I link I include at least a summary of what it’s about here so it can stand alone as a comment, and the link is for more detail.

There are three comments in a row (above) that are virtually only links and say little or nothing about what it’s about. I think that’s bad practice, and worse than what I do.

Pete, i can tell you a couple of truths as someone who regularly advises people with budgeting and debt issues. i have experience of over 10 years of doing this, not some handwringing politician out to make a name for herself.

1. the people she is targetting do not care about interest rates etc, what they care about is, will you give me the money and do i think i can make the payments.

2. The loan sharks she is referring to are her way of bitchily talking about payday loans, pawn shops etc. they are not loan sharks (whatever the hell one actually is), they are legal businesses who have disclosure requirements, have to ensure the clients can pay back the money, and take a lot of risk in their business which is mostly unsecured lending, which is why they have high interest rates. these companies never seek out the client, the borrower always calls them begging for money. these companies are also covered by a stack of existing regulation. Do i like the idea of this kind of finance? no, but they are useful for some people and would not be used otherwise.

3. you can legislate all manner of disclosure of fees, payments etc and most of these people will not read it, they are looking for the bit to sign so they can get the cash. if they want $3000 and you say it will be $40 a week to pay back, thats all they care about. interest rates, terms, fees etc, which will all be overly well highlighted, will be ignored.

4. budgeting only works when people want to do it, and you have skilled people providing the advice. if you make it a mandatory part of getting tax payer secured finance (which is what she is on about), then these people will do the bare minimum to get the money and then bugger off. in the end it will end up another pointless part of winz where we pay people to pretend to do work that benefits noone.

5. budgeting and clearing debt is hard work, most people want a miracle that does not change their lifestyle one bit. sadly the majority of the people i have advised give up once they realise they will need to can sky, cut back on smoking, lotto, takeaways etc.

jacinda has never lived in the real world, has no idea how most people live and think, and will have had less contact with people in the scenarios she thinks she is an expert on than me, yet she thinks she has the skills and knowledge to talk about finance and borrowing habits? she earns $160K a year for this waste of time.

kowotow, yes, I did blog five times about Gilmore and associated issues (the effect of him on public perceptions of poitics in particular) – when it was news. My last post was on May 4, ten days ago, about when the MSM picked up on it and started going full bore, and I decided I’d done enough.

Gilmore’s utu is more likely to be a mimi in the political wind.

I think I’m justified in criticising media coverage, it has been massively overdone and has overshadowed, even overwhelmed much more important news an political issues.

Grendel, a very good post.
Arderns reality has no base,she has been in the system ,or trough as some say way to long to actually understand the reality of life at the other end of the economic spectrum.
Has she ever had to pay rent,food,school fees ,clothes ,petrol health and all other needs and demands of a family of 2 adults and 4 kids whilst take home pay is an average of $500 a week before tax.
Now there will be family assistance and other benefits available ,but the ability to budget and make decisions based on whats best as opposed to whats necessary at any given moment of running families cant be quantified.
Simply she has no idea.

I’ve just read an article about the protest at the Dunedin North McDonalds, and noticed something that has me wondering. When somebody in a 4WD tried to go through the drive-in that the union was blocking, the protesters warned the 4WD driver “if you go through us you are breaking the law and we will have you arrested for it”.

Could someone comment, is this true? I have no problem with people protesting if they feel the need, but can they really legally block people from going into the store, or (in this case) using the drive-through? That doesn’t sound right, but I would be interested to know the correct details.

So, abortionist Kermit Gosnell has been found guilty on three counts of murdering babies born alive by snipping their necks.
This probably only accounts for a fraction of the crimes committed at his “house of horrors” where bags of fetuses and feet in jars were discovered lying around – not to mention the bloodstained walls.

A Philadelphia doctor has been convicted of the first-degree murders of three babies delivered and killed with scissors in late-term abortions.

Dr Kermit Gosnell, 72, was acquitted on another charge of killing a fourth baby, who let out a whimper before he cut its neck, prosecutors said.

He was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter of an adult patient who died of an overdose.

The case was seized on by both sides in the US debate over abortion.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Gosnell.

The trial heard that one of the babies was almost 30 weeks when aborted, and had grown so large that Gosnell joked it could “walk to the bus”. A second foetus was said to have clung to life for about 20 minutes.

A third was born in a toilet and seen moving before a clinic employee severed its spinal cord, according to testimony.

Officials said a raid of the clinic, in a poor section of West Philadelphia, had turned up bags and bottles of foetal remains, including severed feet.

The clinic also had bloodstained furniture, dirty medical tools and cats roaming the premises.

In addition to calling the admitted actions “mind-boggling,” the personality highlighted the assertion that “this government is using the Internal Revenue Service to target people with whom they disagree.” Others, like co-host Willie Geist, jumped in say that the collective actions constitute”tyranny.”

“When it comes to political speech, it’s sacrosanct. Our founding fathers meant for it to be sacrosanct,” Scarborough said, going on the lambaste the IRS. “Liberal and conservative Supreme Courts alike do not allow the government to tread on political speech. There is a wall around that, and the wall has been knocked down by the IRS for several years now.”

That’s right. Nixon got impeached for lessor crimes than Obama.
Included in the Nixon scandal was his targeting of political enemies using the IRS.

Fletch 11:42 If those comments are response to the Obama administration’s apparent attack on the media as evidenced by the phone records being taken, it really does show how shallow the media are and how complicit they have been in covering up the administration’s corruption for the since Obama entered the White House. It is really telling that it is only when the torch is turned onto the media that they start squealing like stuck pigs and railing against the curtailment of freedom of the press as if it is somehow more important than freedom of the individual.

One would think that the sublime Helen Clarke has been running a seminar series for the media with the last episode being the determination of the point where you blow the lid off. Remember P Field MP who was protected and covered until he bit the hand of the mistress at which point the dagger was used in a swift and unforgiving manner.

Simple answer: no they cannot. The right to picket does not confer a right to prevent others from going about their lawful business. They have a right to picket, but others have a right to cross that picket line. The purpose of a picket is to try and put social pressure on people not to cross it. It does not confer a legal right on picketers to forcefully prevent a car from going through the drive-through.

Thanks Weihana – I thought it was odd they claimed that, and it wasn’t challenged by the ODT.

There’s some fairly pushy Unite/Mana/International Socialist activists in Dunedin. One of them started speaking at candidate meetings during the 2011 campaign until it became known he wasn’t a candidate. They were the militant core of Occupy in the Octagon, and prominent in the last asset sale march.

I’m trying to understand this convention centre fuss. It seems that the naysayers think that more people will end up with gambling problems. Is that it? Because if that’s it – that an untested and controversial prediction should stop a $400m investment in a much-needed facility with obvious economic benefits – then it’s a very flimsy objection. And even if the prediction were true, it would be a sad day if a country’s growth was held back because a few miscreants can’t control their behaviour.

As for Turei’s pathetic suggestion on the radio this morning – that those who benefit from the centre should pay for its construction – how does that work? Does a dairy nearby contribute a share of the construction costs in return for a share in the result?

“Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral is looking for ratepayers’ money to fund a new building development.

“The project plan includes building a new 120 seat chapel, rebuilding the cathedral organ and restoring the St Mary’s Church organ.

“The total cost of the project is $12 million, of which the cathedral is looking for $3 million from Auckland Council over two to three years.

“So far $5 million has been raised, including over $1 million from the cathedral community.”

Unlike some of the rabidly anti-Christian commentators on this site, I have admiration for churches and their congregations that use their own money to build grand edifices “to the glory of God”. But I would object strongly to Government or Council funding being used directly in the way being proposed by these church interests in Auckland.

This “need” is being justified in a ludicrous PR fashion, including by pointing to celebrities who are buried from the Cathedral – presumably because they belonged to that particular faith. I would also be opposed to public funds being used for cathedral or church restoration in Christchurch.

If Holy Trinity Cathedral can’t afford to expand or support its own infrastructure, it should consider selling the Cathedral to a property investor and lease it back on a long-term lease. Or adjust its aspirations to the limits of its earthly means.

Jacinda is just another advocate for ‘service welfare’ as direct payment welfare has been a complete failure.

Labour also wants to show welfare beneficieries ‘how to cook and clean’.

Harriet, Obama seems to really hate coloured folk and Muslims. He plays mind games with them too. One minute he is supporting extremist Islamic radicals, then he turns around and kills, them, their families, and bombs their homes into rubble.

I guess that is what it takes to get the Nobel Peace Prize !

Yep, the Financial Advisers Act 2008, which came into force in July 2011 (started by labour btw, who are now complaining about these lenders who they already regulated) covers anyone who provides financial products.

i checked on the Financial Services Register, and both SuperLoans, who are a pawnshop style lender (and seem to run on franchise), and Savemybacon, a payday loan lender are both registered and both have a Disputes resolution service listed. both of these are legal requirements, so if a lender if not doing that, they are breaking the current law and dont need to worry about new legislation.

one of the requirements is that your information be clear and concise, and while i dont know 100% of the requirements of the lenders (i do advice and mortgage and insurance broking, not their kind of lending), they have to spell out what the costs are etc.

These guys are not loan sharks, no matter how much i would not like to have to use one or have a client use one (unless it was the only option and we had a clear exit). loan sharks if there is any definition are gangs and other people who use threats of violence to get their money (like IRD 🙂 ).

you want to see the biggest breakers of the current law? see the banks. i hate standing in line at the bank or post office and listening to the tellers breaking the law repeatedly. listening to a post office worker try and tell someone they should switch their KiwiSaver away from an adviser becuase “you dont need an adviser”,”our scheme is better than theirs” etc does my head in.

they are simply not qualified, skilled or competent to say that and its never in writing (another requirement). but people are being cajoled to move away from having their KiwiSaver with Authorised Financial Advisers (like me), or their insurances with advisers (when the best bank insurance is lucky to rate 60% against the industries top products). Lets see labour bring up what the banks do, its too easy to beat up the little guy taking the most risk.

Saudi arrested with pressure cooker at airport…

A Saudi man was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport with a pressure cooker, less than a month after a bomb using one of the kitchen devices was used to kill three and injure hundreds.

Hussain Al Kwawahir was charged in federal court with using an altered passport and lying to a Customs and Border Protection Agent about the pressure cooker, according to The Detroit News. Al Kwawahir arrived Saturday from Saudi Arabia, via Amsterdam, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in federal court. He told investigators he was here to see a nephew who attends the University of Toledo.

Customs officials noticed a page missing from his passport, then found the pressure cooker during an examination of his baggage, according to authorities. Al Kwawahir said he brought the pressure cooker for his nephew because the devices are not sold in the United States, according to the complaint.

He later changed his story, saying his nephew had bought a pressure cooker in the U.S. but it was broken.

God decides to destroy the world and calls the leaders of the 3 strongest countries to inform them for that.
After that the Russian leader on his speech on TV he says;
“I have good news and bad news
The good news is that God really exists so we were right all the time to believe in him.
The bad news is that He decided to bring the world to an end in 1 week”.
China’s leader also makes a TV speech;
“I only bring bad news from my meeting with God
He actually exists so it was our mistake not to believe in him and we will be punished for that in the afterlife and he decided to end our world in 1 week”.
Obama in his TV speech says;
“I am happy to bring you only good news from God;
First I must tell you that I met him and can assure you that he actually exists.
And second he told me that he will finish our work in only 1 week”.

Or not.

Krystle Marie Campbell reportedly died instantly, but real leg injuries don’t cause instant death. The are plenty of photos showing Campell to be alive after the explosion. The only apparent injuries were to her legs, but those injuries don’t appear to bleed.
